“Gypsy,” a work by Stephen Sondheim, Jule Styne, and Arthur Laurents, is often called the greatest of American musicals; a new production on Broadway is a noteworthy event, especially when a star like Audra McDonald is cast in the lead role of Rose. McDonald has won six Tonys for her acting, in both plays and musicals. In the repertoire of musicals, race in casting is still very much an issue, and one columnist criticized her portrayal of Rose because of her race. “I have dealt with this my entire career,” McDonald tells Michael Schulman, recalling that in her breakout performance, in “Carousel,” some audiences “were upset with me that I was playing Carrie, saying, ‘She wouldn't have been Black.' There's a man who comes down from heaven with a star in his hand!” In a wide-ranging interview onstage at The New Yorker Festival, McDonald discusses how when she was a child theatre was initially intended to be a type of therapy for her, and the roles her parents wouldn't let her take. “Gypsy” is currently in previews on Broadway.

Robert Cutarella spent most of his childhood evenings burrowed under his pillows, a transistor radio speaker in his ear listening to the Dick Clark Show and other famous deejays. A passion for rhythm emerged during drumming sessions with wooden spoons borrowed from his aunt. At nine years-old Robert's parents took him to see drum icon Gene Krupa at the Metropole Club in midtown Manhattan. Krupa's physicality and deep passion for his craft made a lasting impression on this soon to be music industry giant. Bob had visions of owning his own company and following a career in the music industry. Robert developed an ear for rhythm, melody, and song structure through growing up in the rhythm and blues era, he earned the opportunity to play with “Do Wop” greats the Shirelle's, Dion and the Belmont's, among others. My dear friend and colleague soprano Sarah Pillow introduces one of her favorite Countermelody programs, which I repost as the first of this month's Listeners' Favorites episodes. Since Sarah is herself an enormously eclectic singer, it's entirely fitting that she should choose to foreground Eileen Farrell. The American dramatic soprano Eileen Farrell (1920–2002) was one of the finest and most versatile singers the United States has ever produced. Her singing career lasted more than fifty years, and this episode covers the entire chronological range of that career, from her early work as a radio singer in the 1940s to her final pop albums in the 1990s. While the episode focuses on her crossover work (and includes work by, among others, Harold Arlen, Jule Styne, Alec Wilder, George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, as heard on two of her lesser-known pop albums with Percy Faith and the late André Previn), we also sample her opera and concert work, with examples from Verdi and Wagner to Debussy and Charpentier, to Barber and Menotti. A late reunion with her favorite conductor Leonard Bernstein caps the episode. NANCY DUSSAULT began attracting national attention at Northwestern University when her junior year photo as “Miss Student Body,” appeared in “Life” Magazine. Sammy Cahn earned the first of five consecutive Academy Award nominations in 1948, working with longtime collaborator Jule Styne for Doris Day's film debut Romance on the High Seas. Leo Robin, already an Academy Award winner, had two songs nominated that year, but the hot young songwriters Jay Livingston and Ray Evans were making a statement with a hit song for Bob Hope. A year ago, as I was preparing my memorial Countermelody episode dedicated to Maria Ewing I was struck anew at just how naturally she had mastered the often messy “crossover” genre. Perhaps that's because she never “crossed over” at all: this material formed part of her essence. I thought it would be a lovely thing to give a more complete picture of her work as a pop singer, using three primary sources: first, her 1990 studio pop album entitled “From this Moment On,” featuring arrangements by Richard Rodney Bennett; second, a rare release entitled “Simply Maria,” which comprises a live concert she gave at the Barbican Centre in London in 10 May 1997; and third, live and studio recordings that she made in in the early 2000s with the jazz combo Kymaera, led by guitarist Simon James. The range of material is dizzying, from Broadway classics by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Jule Styne, Harold Arlen, Cy Coleman, Kurt Weill, and George and Ira Gershwin to jazz stylings by Tom Jobim, eden ahbez, and Billy Strayhorn, with more than a few surprises along the way, and her mastery of it all is exceptional, with all of the intense commitment she showed in her operatic portrayals (and none of the condescension or preciousness associated with certain other crossover artists). I'm so thrilled to share this less well-known side of one of the great operatic singing actors of our time. Michael Jackson recorded this song on his 12th birthday in 1970.“2000 Miles” by the PretendersThis song was on “Learning to Crawl,” the breakout studio album by the Pretenders released in 1983. Chrissie Hynde wrote the song for James Honeyman-Scott, the group's original guitarist who had passed away the year prior to this recording.“Mistress for Christmas” by AC/DCRob may find a lump of coal in his stocking for picking this song for the Christmas podcast! This is a cover of the song, which was originally released by Mabel Scott in 1954.“(There's No Place Like) Home for the Holidays” by Perry ComoPerry Como released this classic Christmas song in 1954. It tells of the longing to be home at Christmas, and some of the travelers making their way home.“Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda LeeJohnny Marks, who wrote “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” and other Christmas songs wrote this one as well. Brenda Lee recorded this in 1958 when she was 13 years old. It is the fifth best selling Christmas single of all time according to Neilson SoundScan. “Feliz Navidad” by Jose FelicianoPuerto Rican musician Jose Feliciano wrote this in 1970. He recorded it in Los Angeles while feeling homesick at Christmas as his extended family was in New York. “Feliz Navidad” means “Merry Christmas” in Spanish. “It's Gonna Be a Punk Rock Christmas” by the RaversWayne brings us a bit of PUNK for the Christmas season. The Ravers released this back in 1977. “It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” by Andy WilliamsWe decided to include more “non-rock singles” in this episode, and this classic holiday tune originated in 1963 on Williams' first Christmas album. It tells of all the activities that surrounds the Christmas season.“Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!” by Dean MartinSammy Cahn and Jule Styne wrote this in the summer of 1945 during a heat wave in Hollywood, California. Dean Martin released a version in 1959, and re-recorded it in 1966.“Blue Christmas” by Seymour Swine and the SquealersThis novelty song was recorded in 1984 for a North Carolina radio station morning show.
