Scott Xiao, Co-Founder and CEO of Luminopia is developing a virtual reality-based treatment for amblyopia, also known as Lazy Eye in children. A traditional treatment is eye patching, which children find difficult to comply with. The Luminopia approach allows children to use a VR headset to watch content licensed from Sesame Street and Nickelodeon as a treatment to improve visual acuity by modifying the content presented to each eye.  This FDA-approved VR-based medical treatment is an immersive environment that reduces distraction and enhances engagement so that children are more likely to comply with and complete treatment plans. Scott explains, "We're pioneering a new class of treatments for a variety of visual conditions, and we're starting with a condition called amblyopia, which is more commonly known as Lazy Eye. And it's the number one cause of vision loss in children. And despite that, there hasn't been innovation in this space for a long time. Traditional treatment for amblyopia requires patients to wear glasses and then, in most cases, go through patching, which is exactly what it sounds like. You take an eye patch and stick it on your stronger eye for multiple hours daily." "The product that we've developed, we like to say, allows patients to watch their favorite TV show as a treatment instead of having to wear a patch. The way that it works is that it's a virtual reality-based product. The kids put on a kid-friendly headset and can choose from more than 3,000 episodes of content that we've licensed from partners like Sesame Street and Nickelodeon.   Once the child has chosen a video to watch, we modify how the images are presented to each eye with the goal of rebalancing the input to the brain and getting the brain to use both eyes together properly. We've shown that we can get significant vision improvement just by having patients watch TV for an hour per day." "Certainly compliance is much easier with our product, and that's an important driver of outcomes. So we think that alone is an important advantage over what you could get with patching. The other important thing we've seen in our studies is that we can improve vision even in patients who have been through patching and failed patching. And that's a pretty big chunk of patients. Anywhere from 50% to close to 80% of patients that go through patching are still left with some amount of amblyopia. We've shown that our treatment works even in those patients, and we think it's because we're taking a different mechanism to treat the condition."  #Luminopia #Amblyopia #LazyEye #Healthtech #VRMED luminopia.com Download the transcript here

Lazy eye, also known as amblyopia, is a condition in which the brain disregards input from one eye, leading to vision loss or reduced visual acuity in that eye. While the exact cause of lazy eye is not known, some experts believe that stress and other psychological factors can play a role in its development and worsening.Studies have shown that stress can impact eye health in a variety of ways, including causing eye strain, dry eyes, and changes in the shape of the eye. In addition, stress can also lead to the release of hormones that can affect the clarity of vision, potentially leading to lazy eye.Furthermore, some experts believe that psychological stress can contribute to the development of other vision problems, like strabismus, which is a misalignment of the eyes that can lead to lazy eye. In these cases, the brain may begin to ignore input from one eye to avoid double vision or other visual distortions. To address the psychosomatic aspect of lazy eye, it is important to focus on managing stress and promoting emotional well-being. This can involve practicing stress management techniques, such as meditation, deep breathing, and exercise, as well as seeking treatment for any underlying psychological conditions like anxiety or depression. It's also important to have regular eye exams and to practice good eye health habits, like wearing protective eyewear, eating a healthy diet, and avoiding activities that can cause eye strain, like prolonged computer use. Early detection and treatment of lazy eye is crucial to prevent vision loss and maintain good eye health.

All right now on to the show.   01:36 Hey, everybody, welcome to the program, doing a little urban broadcasting today. So I'm in downtown Santa Fe, actually, my old office is just over there. I closed that office in 2010. But this is a very sweet part of Santa Fe, it's on the west side, pretty quiet and easy going. So I thought I would stop and take a question from a parent is very concerned about a four year old daughter Julie. So Julie has been diagnosed with farsightedness and lazy eye and she's got an eye turning in. And her eye doctor said that she needs to wear these glasses full time, mom sent me the prescriptions about a plus six. And he also said that she only has about three more years to be able to improve the lazy eye. And he wants to schedule her for eye muscle surgery. Because the only way to fix this I turn is with eye muscle surgery. Well, of course, she is appalled by this. She wants other opinions. And so she's known me a long time. And so I wanted to give my point of view. So first thing I want to say is that with kids, their visual system is very malleable, very plastic in the sense that it's versatile, it's changeable. And when you start putting glasses on children are doing things like surgery. There's even a technique where you can use eyedrops that can actually reduce a lazy eye. When you do all these invasive treatments, what ends up happening is it basically reinforces the problem. You know, the eyes are the only part of the brain that are outside the cranial vault. And since the eyes are brain tissue, especially in children, it's a great opportunity to improve one's vision by doing physical therapy exercises, because what you're doing there is you're creating new pathways, new ways for the child to use their visual system in the midst of using both eyes together. So with the glasses prescription, you know the way glasses are prescribed is that the doctor is going to put in eyedrops that paralyze the focusing muscles. We call this dilating eyedrops. And once you do that, you have lost the opportunity to be able to measure the organic focusing flexibility of the visual system. And the reason is, is because those muscles are paralyzed because of the eyedrops. And so the prescription that the doctor is going to give is always way too strong. So in this particular case, one of the things we have to look at is First of all,

People certainly do have opinions about "You People," the interracial, interfaith Netflix romcom scripted by Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill. But we're putting reviews on hold (tune in next week!) to go behind the scenes with Todd Shotz, the Jewish consultant on this controversial production. He's also a film producer and founder of the b'nai mitzvah prep company Hebrew Helpers. How did Todd land this gig? How did he advise the producers on creating the big Yom Kippur scene from the beginning of the movie? And why is there a Yiddish consultant in the credits, but no Yiddish scene in the movie? This episode of The Bagel Report is sponsored by the Jewish Film Institute, whose WinterFest event is coming up Feb. 25-26 at the Vogue Theater in San Francisco.Connect with us on socials!Twitter: @estherk, @ebenmoche and @TheBagelReportInstagram: @estherkustanowitz, @ebenmoche and @tbrthepod Email us at: thebagelreport@gmail.comOther links for this episode:Background Bagels — our episode last year recapping our days as background actorsHebrew HelpersRecipe for ChangeThe Grotto (film)Lazy Eye (film)Latter Day Jew (film)Kevin Misher (You People producer)

NovaSight is tackling one of the biggest unmet needs in ophthalmology: pediatric amblyopia, otherwise known as “lazy eye.” It's the leading cause of vision loss in children. And despite innovations in virtually every other eye condition, the most common amblyopia treatment has remained the eye patch.NovaSight's CureSight is a binocular treatment that lets kids do their favorite on-screen activities—movies, YouTube videos, homework—while the device's eye-tracking technology and three-dimensional image processing algorithms go to work. NovaSight recently presented positive top-line data and expects to receive Food and Drug Administration clearance in Q3. NovaSight's CEO, Ran Yam, spoke with OIS Podcast host Rob Rothman, MD, about NovaSight and how it's meeting unmet needs in children. NovaSight emerged in 2016 after an engineer approached Ran with an idea for using a virtual reality headset to treat strabismus. They were introduced to Michael Belkin of Belkin Lasers, who encouraged the partners to focus on pediatric uses. They agreed. Ran then assumed the role of CEO, started fundraising, and guided the company through a successful Series A round. NovaSight now has one product on the market—EyeSwift, a diagnostic device—and another on the way. Both use optical image sensors, a pair of ActiveSight glasses, and a cloud-based monitoring system. The company is currently raising $15 million to $20 million to fund development of the second generation of EyeSwift and to research CureSight for myopia prevention. Listen to the podcast for an in-depth look at:  • Pivotal study results for CureSight as an amblyopia treatment device.• How physicians use CureSight and EyeSwift, including how they can monitor activity between visits.• What's different about EyeSwift 2.0.• How CureSight addresses myopia prevention.• How an engineer with an idea connected with Ran and Belkin to launch a successful start-up.Click “play” to listen.

Nancy came to my miracle service and received healing of a lifetime with Amblyopia – Lazy Left Eye! The power of God touched her and healed her! Nancy came and received healing for her lazy left eye. Since the age of 7 until now as an adult, she had what is medically referred to as Amblyopia, otherwise known as an eye that wanders due to abnormal development. Nancy had eye surgery to correct this, but it was not effective. Over the years she had visited many churches and conferences to receive prayer for healing but had not yet received her healing. Nancy contacted me and explained her situation and planned to attend House of Glory's Miracle service on Saturday night. When she came up for prayer and told me her name, I laid hands on her and the glory of God moved upon her. She began to shake, and she fell over under the power of God. She got up and to the glory of God was completely and instantly healed!! For more information visit our website at www.cathycoppola.org
