Three friends decide to do their science project on a forgotten novelty invention, a self-peeling banana. Genre: Science Fiction Excerpt: “What about dinosaurs?” I said after a few minutes. “We could do our project on how and why they went extinct. That's exciting.” K.D. shook her head. “It might seem too basic. Like something we would have done in the fifth grade.” She loved dinosaurs. She probably didn't want someone making fun of our project if it was about the thing she loved most. “But maybe you're on the right track. Animals, but rare ones. What about cryptids?” What's the Writing Prompt that inspired the story?Write an ad for a self-peeling banana.Source: A Writer's Year: 365 Creative Writing Prompts. Text by Emma Bastow. A new technology may help a woman regain some mobility and independence by developing an ability she never had before. Genre: Science Fiction Excerpt: When Mrs. Santi first came to Jim's Gym (as he had so creatively named it), she was just looking for someone to help her exercise the muscles she could still feel and engage with fully, the muscles of her upper body. She aimed to delay getting a powered chair for as long as she could. She had heard of the Ocular Prism Interface, or OPI as the company called it, or Prism as most other people were calling it. She had read that it was being used to help stave off dementia in some elderly people. And she'd told Jim that if he ever got it, she'd be interested in taking a crack at it. A sculptor working through a creative block notices something strange about the sculptures molded from a particular brand of clay. Genre: Mystery, Science Fiction Excerpt: They say that a sculptor doesn't create what she sculpts. She only reveals what is already there in the medium. I was not finding that to be true. Either there was nothing to be revealed in the lump of clay that sat on the workbench before me, or I didn't have the skill that a real sculptor is supposed to have. The skill of sight. The skill to see what it is that is seeking to be revealed in the medium. Come on, I thought. Reveal yourself. CREDITSStory: “Cloaked in Clay” Copyright © 2018 by Nila L. When the thunder and lightning started, he set his camera to continuous shooting mode, in the hopes of catching a breath-taking shot of a lightning bolt. He did, but his camera caught a glimpse of something else as well. There appeared to be, in one particular shot, a ladder. A lean-to ladder that wasn’t leaning on anything. It just stood on its own and it reached up into the rainclouds. What happens when Charlie Sodona finds and climbs an invisible free-standing ladder that reaches up into the clouds? How does the law balance the rights of women to access safe and legal abortions with the right to free speech and protest? For over twenty years anti-abortion protesters have picketed abortion clinics around Australia. To combat this targeted harassment of women seeking safe and legal abortions, state governments have passed ‘safe access zone’ laws which create an exclusion zone around abortion clinics which protestors cannot enter. Anti-abortionists argue these laws limit their free speech. Supporters of safe access zones argue these laws are vital to ensure the safety of women seeking health care. When this law was challenged by anti-abortion protesters who had breached the exclusion zones, the High Court was faced with a major balancing act. The stick was about a half inch wide and seven inches long, a tan color with knots and streaks of a darker tan-brown. It had three nodes where smaller branches had once grown in and then broken off.
