Song of the Day
Byland - Mine

Song of the Day

Byland - "Mine" from the 2020 self-released album Gray. For her latest LP Gray, Albuquerque-based artist Alie Renee Byland (who records under the name Byland) immersed herself in the Seattle music scene, collaborating with producer and multi-instrumentalist Nathan Yaccino (known for his work with Soundgarden, Noah Gundersen, Brandi Carlile). For today's featured track, she invited local musicians Abby Gundersen and Meagan Grandall (aka Lemolo) into the Ballard recording studio.  In a press release, she tells us: “Mine” is about realizing that my energy is finite and that I have permission to say “no”. I grew up idealizing the notion of giving without limit. When I felt drained, I thought there was something wrong with me. Last Summer, I was feeling especially emotionally and relationally exhausted. I wrote this song while I had an overwhelming amount of calls, emails and texts to respond to. I intentionally wanted “Mine”’s rhythm and offset melody to feel abrupt at times, to express the sense of being pulled in polarizing directions. I was nervous to bring another track to my producer, Nathan Yaccino, given that we were well into the recording process already. But after sharing a simple phone demo, we promptly sat down together and fleshed out the piano tracks, vocals and overall vision for this song. Abby Gunderson’s cinematic strings and the haunting harmonies of Meagan Grandall helped fortify and exemplify the internal expanse this song symbolizes. A liberating anthem, “Mine” is perhaps the most emblematic of the record’s ode to prioritizing mental health, by giving a voice to subconscious thoughts, and creating space within, a space that’s mine.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Each issue of ESOPUS features an audio CD with brand-new music inspired by a particular theme. For the forthcoming ESOPUS 23 (on newsstands in May), the CD explores the subject of "Close Calls." For it, we invited 13 musical acts to pick a close-call moment from their lives — ranging from near-death experiences to romantic misfires — that they've never been able to shake. For this podcast, ESOPUS editor Tod Lippy talks with four contributors to the CD — Anthony LaMarca (The War on Drugs), Darren Solomon (Science for Girls), Jo Lawry, and The Kickstand Band — about the songs they created and the near-miss moments that inspired them. The ESOPUS 23 "CLOSE CALLS" CD also includes new tracks by Kristin Andreassen, The Big Bright, Gabriel Birnbaum, Dollshot, Coling Gilmore, Lemolo, Trees Take Ease, Grant Widmer, and YC the Cynic. More information about ESOPUS 23 and its CD is available on our website: http://www.esopus.org

Lemolo’s last effort, The Kaleidoscope, released in 2013, was a critical success and one of our favorite releases of the year. The follow up, Red Right Return has been highly anticipated by fans and press alike. I have heard the new disc, and it is a brilliant collection of highly addictive, progressive, dream-pop ditties. After a few listens, it is obvious that Meagan Grandall has grown as a songwriter, arranger and musician. On the newest record, the songs and arrangements are more complex, and the soundscapes more lush. Seattle Rock Orchestra and Sisters’ very own Emily Westman performed on the new record and, along with Grandall, put together a heavier sound while still maintaining the trademark Lemolo sonic tapestry and dreamy vibe. Grandall’s musical journey has taken her on an interesting path that has led her to discover her true voice, which is beautifully on display on Lemolo’s newest release. Lemolo will celebrate the release of their new disc, Red Right Return on Friday, November 6 at 8:00 p.m. at an all-ages show at The Crocodile. Also on the bill is the amazing Maiah Manser and Mimicking Birds. Tickets for the show are available here. For our first SMI Radio episode of the fall season, we welcome Lemolo into Critical Sun Studio who will talk about Red Right Return, and perform a few songs from the record. Lemolo’s Grandall and drummer Adrian Centoni talk about the evolution of the sound and songwriting, as well as some of the distinctions between their new, highly touted release, The Kaleidoscope.

Spacecraft is a nonprofit arts organization on a mission to bring new art and energy to Bainbridge Island. Visit Spacecraft on Facebook On their Facebook page, they describe their mission as being “a collaborative nonprofit where artists of all ages and backgrounds can explore meaning in new and authentic ways” with a space that is “ideal for experiencing fresh craft, as well as witnessing established artists in an intimate setting.” In their conversation with BCB host Stuart Stranahan, Morgan and Cortney describe several upcoming music events at Spacecraft from October through December -- including something special for Halloween. The next music event is Friday, October 17th at 7pm. The main performer that night will be Lemolo. Here's what Spacecraft, on their Facebook event page, has to say about Lemolo: "Lemolo is the dream pop brainchild of Seattle musician Meagan Grandall. Grandall grew up in the sleepy town of Poulsbo, WA and spent her childhood meandering along the town's most scenic road, Lemolo Shore Drive. After graduating from Seattle University in 2009, Grandall decided to turn her passion of writing and performing music into a career and has been performing her music with Lemolo ever since. The band's debut full length album, The Kaleidoscope, was self-released in 2012. The album was included in KEXP's “Top Listener Voted Albums of 2012″ list, was a number one best seller at Sonic Boom Records and was also voted as the “Best New Music” of 2013 by City Arts Magazine. Grandall is currently recording the sophomore Lemolo album."
