On this week's show, the hosts begin by jumping into Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, a prequel to George Miller's 2015 Fury Road, in which Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Furiosa, an arachnid beauty who's stolen as a child and becomes a wasteland road warrior. She's a “strong, silent type,” typical of the action film genre, but does that trope mean something different with a female protagonist in 2024? The panel discusses. (Read Dana's review of Furiosa!) Then, the three chat Hit Man, Richard Linklater's latest starring Glen Powell as Gary Johnson, a college professor who moonlights as a fake gunman for hire. It's a delightful rom-com tucked within a thriller—a romantic thriller, if you will–that manages to feel like a hangout film despite its ridiculous premise. (Read Dana's review of Hat Man!) Finally, ScarJo or FauxJo? Tech journalist and author of Blood in the Machine: The Origins of the Rebellion Against Big Tech Brian Merchant joins the panel to parse through Silicon's Valley's latest scandal: Scarlett Johansson accusing ChatGPT of stealing her voice for its new interface program. (Read Brian's newsletter about it!) In the exclusive slate Plus segment, the hosts answer an excellent listener question from Michael Schulman: What fictional works of art-within-the-art would you most want to see on their own? Email us at culturefest@slate.com. Endorsements: Dana: An interview between Richard Linklater and Skip Hollandsworth, whose stories Linklater adapted in the films Bernie and Hit Man, for Texas Monthly. Julia: Monopoly Deal, a well-designed family card game. Stephen: A poem by Janet Frame, “Scarlet Tanager, Saratoga Springs” which was featured on the Yumi Zouma song, “Lie Like You Want Me Back - Alternative Version.” Podcast production by Jessamine Molli. Christie Simpson's journey in the music industry began when she joined forces with friends and fellow musicians Josh Burgess, Charlie Ryder, and Sam Perry to form the band Yumi Zouma. Captivating audiences around the globe and leaving an enduring impact on fans and critics, as a charismatic and talented singer, Christie has been instrumental in shaping the band's distinct sound. Her vocals possess a unique blend of sweetness and vulnerability, weaving their way through the band's lush synth-pop melodies, creating an enchanting sonic tapestry that is distinctly Yumi Zouma. On this episode of Dystopia Tonight we explore the formation of the band, Her songwriting, which often explores themes of love, longing, and self-reflection, the unique process the band has developed creating music, surviving an earthquake, a pandemic, and getting the chance to tour and work with musicians and bands she admires. Enjoy!

As broadcast September 26, 2022 with new tunes aplenty in tow. Tonight we mark a date that a very important live album was recorded at London's Palladium, which became Marvin Gaye's iconic album from 1977. We also noted some interesting facts about the only studio recording from the album "Got To Give It Up," which appeared right at the end of the live album. After that, it's huge new music all the way to the end with the exception of Yumi Zouma, who are in the spotlight for our upcoming concerts, as they do their first live on Wednesday up in Seoul at Rolling Hall. New cuts galore from Channel Tres, Alex G, The 1975, Sure Sure, and Broken Bells to dig into first hour, and then we had some big new pop tunes in part 3 with Khalid, Sam Smith, and 5SOS all out with new joints. To finish properly in part 4, we covered some of the notable new & recent Korean indie that dropped this month, with Han All, GAYUN, and HANRORO being highlights.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Marvin Gaye – Got To Give It UpMorMor – Chasing GhostsDivino Nino – EcstasyChannel Tres – No LimitNilufer Yanya – Rid of MeSleater-Kinney feat Courtney Barnett – Words and GuitarMonet Ngo – Summer WindPart II (35:21)Alex G – ImmunityThe 1975 – All I Need To HearSure Sure – Lonely OneVieux Farka-Toure & Khruangbin – DiarabiBroken Bells – Love On The RunYumi Zouma – Give It HellYumi Zouma – Where The Light Used To Lay Part III (65:48)Khalid – SatelliteFLO – Not My JobSam Smith feat Kim Petras – UnholyQ – Stereo DriverSiR – Nothing Ever MattersMaya Hawke - Luna Moth5 Seconds of Summer – Bad Omens Part IV (96:50)BAMSOOSUNG – Swimming In StarsHan All – You Know EverythingEntoy feat suru – Blue Mood*GAYUN – DOONGDOONGHANRORO – Don't Be Afraid To FallJOO SEOL OK – I wanted to be lovedAble – How long will it take to forget you?

Tonight we officially welcome David Whatever true name David Kwon to the chairman's seat on Tuesday nights for the first time, and we have a great playlist of new indie vibes and joints you might have missed out recently. We also gave the world premiere treatment to the latest release from LA's Young Winona, who are out with Red Dress this Thursday! Big up to Amber and Alex at LA's Poor Man Records, as always. After that, lots of great new vibes from the likes of Orgone, Swiss Portrait, and Still Woozy to chew on as well. This week's show covers new music from Barcelona's Rosalía, with an assist from The Weeknd, a new single from Amsterdam's Weval, a deep cut from the new album by Christchurch, New Zealand's Yumi Zouma, and a new single from London's Robohands with vocals by Aleh. For the archive pick this week, Brendan sends us back to 1990 for a lost cut, that appeared right before Seattle turned into the grunge capital of the world. Mother Love Bone was the band, and the song in question is rockin' ripper of a tune entitled “Stardog Champion.” Not a forgotten track, by any means. But this week's archive pick, all the same. Of course, there are six more bonus tracks, but you have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those. It's pretty easy to do, if you just click this link. (And do so without fear. We won't misuse your email address, as this show is run by two guys, Mark and Brendan; Not some faceless corporation.) Lastly, don't miss our fabulous Spotify playlists. We make one for each episode of the show, so grab the latest if you are up to date, and dig into previous episodes if you are new here, or just curious. Have a terrific week!

As broadcast March 21, 2022 with plenty of spring for your podcast steppin. Tonight we welcome two very new things with open arms on The Drop, with the start of Season 7 of the show happening on Spring Solstice, we couldn't possibly take that as a bad sign, although Iggy Pop and David Bowie weren't having the most auspicious night on this date in 1976, which is our history opener for the gig. Tons of great new tunes to cover on the show tonight, with new tunes from The Smile, Bon Iver, and a new album announced from Arcade Fire to highlight. However, we were missing Kat Bass at least in the studio this week as she came down with COVID, so is trapped at home until later this week as a result. Great cuts to hear in our 2nd hour Popcast feature from her as well though, although without her lovely voice. As broadcast February 21, 2022 with mega power femme bidness to keep your pod castin'. Tonight we open with mega respect for Buffy Sainte-Marie, as the legendary songwriter and fighter for Native American & First Nations rights turned 81 yesterday. Covered by legends of the game, she inspired Joni Mitchell to write her first song, wrote hit after hit after hit, but her solo work was banned on the radio. That's alright though, because she's a legend now not only with fans of the folk genre, but she's like a stepmother to Sesame Street kids worldwide, long live Maria! She also shares workflows including vocal processing, favorite plugins, her dream live setup, and how her music was influenced by unexpected life experiences. Claire George is a songwriter, producer and vocalist originally from Seattle, WA. Following the release of Bodies of Water on Cascine in 2018, Claire toured the US & Canada with DRAMA, in addition to supporting Diane Coffee, The Midnight, and Kllo on shorter runs and headlining her own West Coast tours.
