Chari Medina. Salvador Limón, Raúl Gallego y Zacarías Cotán
Interview by Kris PetersGrinding Eyes craft a uniquely dark sonic landscape, fusing psychedelic shoegaze, drone rock, and ambient garage punk. The Sydney band released their third studio album, Out of Focus, last Friday, further capitalizing on the momentum built through their 2018 self-titled album and 2021's Taste the Monochrome.Known for their relentless touring, Grinding Eyes have shared stages with The Jesus and Mary Chain, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, Swervedriver, Graveyard, Moon Duo, Dinosaur Jr., Monkey Wrench, Superchunk, New Candys and Mudhoney, as well as Australian bands, Amyl and the Sniffers, Cosmic Psychos, Spiderbait, The Drones, Straight Arrows, DMA's, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, POND, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and Tropical Fuck Storm. The band's line up also boasts members from past and present bands The Mess Hall, Treatment, The Laurels, Bliss and Kimono Drag Queens, further cementing their deep roots in Australia's underground music scene. But Grinding Eyes are more than just the sum of their past bands. They are a sonic extension into another realm of musical experimentation held back without boundaries or expectations.Vocalist Matt Wicks joined HEAVY to tell us more."With this album, I suppose we sort of concentrated a little bit more on the sounds where previously we've pretty much done everything live," he measured. "We would dive straight in, start recording, do a lot of long sessions and sort of see what comes out. On this one we tried to refine it a little bit more, do most of the songwriting and we actually played most of these songs live for a couple of months. So they became a life of their own. We wanted to really harness more of a tighter sound where we could mess with it more in the studio than just having the sort of raw organic rock and roll feel of it."In the full interview, HEAVY spoke with Matt about the release of Out Of Focus following a year of delays. Matt expressed his relief regarding the album's completion and highlighted the band's creative evolution, mentioning that they have already started writing new material. The album features a mix of musical styles, reflecting their organic songwriting process.During their forthcoming Australian tour, the band intends to perform a substantial portion of the new album alongside some older tracks. Furthermore, they will support Pig's Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs on their European tour later this year.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
The Influence of the Velvet Undergroundwith special guest Dave Lennon (Lost in the Groove Podcast)What happens when two podcast hosts—one from sunny Florida, the other from soggy Suffolk—sit down to worship at the altar of The Velvet Underground? Absolute chaos, that's what.In this episode of Beat Motel, Andrew is joined by Dave Lennon from Lost in the Groove to unravel the weird, wonderful, and often dysfunctional legacy of Lou Reed and co. Expect deep dives into the genius of John Cale, Nico's awkward-but-iconic vocals, and why Mo Tucker deserved better.Along the way, we also offend Replacements fans, ponder what David Bowie talked about while curling one out, and discuss how Arctic Monkeys gave a pension to a punk poet. Musician Daryl Hance joins us to discuss the fourth album from the Police “Ghost in the Machine.” Plenty of discussion about MTV, speaking French, Sandra Bullock and “Demolition Man,” alpha males & omega males, and more. Dissecting any Police record is a lot of fun and doing it with Daryl was a blast. Y'all go check out his last album "Devil's Milhopper." It's one part 70s rock (ala Black Sabbath or maybe Mountain) and one part Jesus and Mary Chain. Yeah, it sounds bizarre, right? It is. Fall is the time for the record industry to unleash a torrent of reissues, box sets, live albums, and all kinds of other sorts of vault releases. Yes, it’s admittedly a bit of a chase for easy cash, but as a collector I love it. Give me that compilation of pre-Velvet Underground songs Lou Reed wrote as a songwriter for Pickwick Records. Give me those box sets versons of my favorite records featuring demos and live tracks. Give me straight ahead compilatons and live albums. Give me all of this stuff! If you are anything like me, you’ll love this overview of those sorts of releases. And yes, there is one track here that doesn’t really fit the format…yet it sort of does. I recently picked up Never Understood: The Jesus and Mary Chain, the memoirs of J&MC brothers Jim and William Reid, and I was intrigued to find out that a few years after the band broke up they both helped out their sister, Linda, in a musical project called Sister Vanilla. Yes, you can certainly tell that she learned a lot from her big brothers. This needs to also be reissued! For more info, including setlists, head to […]

In this weeks episode we celebrate our official two year podcasting anniversary by talking to one of our favorite musicians - Josiah Mazzaschi. Josiah is a multi instrumentalist/engineer/producer/songwriter who made quite a name for himself in the Chicago area before eventually settling in Los Angeles where he now works as a producer and songwriter. Many of you will know of Josiah from his bands like Childseat, Light FM, Bizou and Motorhome, but he has also worked with bands like The Smashing Pumpkins, Idles and Jesus and the Mary Chain in his role as a producer. We talk about his studio 'The Cave', general musician life and he even shared a hilarious Steve Albini story with me, check out the full interview now. Throughout the late 80s and early 90s, Ministry were one of the most terrifyingly aggressive industrial acts around. But in 1983 Al Jourgensen introduced himself to the masses - and this week's guest, producer/musician Dave Trumfio (Chicago's Pulsars) - with the decidedly New Wave 'With Sympathy'. This is NOT your grandma's Ministry, unless your grandma is a moody goth kid singing snappy little synth-pop tunes in a faux-British accent. Enjoy! Songs discussed in this episode: Revenge (VJ Rob Edge Mix) - Ministry; Submission Song, Tunnel Song, Suffocation - The Pulsars; Burning Inside, Just Like You, Effigy (I'm Not An) - Ministry; Body Bag - Effigies; Going For Adds - Moving Units; Revenge - Ministry; My Spine Is The Bassline - Shriekback; I Wanted To Tell Her - Ministry; Money Is Not Our God - Killing Joke; Work For Love, Every Day Is Halloween - Ministry; Just Like Honey - The Jesus and Mary Chain; Here We Go, What He Say, Say You're Sorry, I Should Have Known Better, I'm Falling, She's Got A Cause - Ministry; It's Not Right - DEVO; Das Lifeboat - The Pulsars
Part two of this month’s new release series is highlighted by long-awaited returns by legendary veteran bands. The Dictators celebrate their 50th anniversary with their first album in 25 years. The Fastbacks are back after a 23 year hiatus. Peter Noone of 60’s pop idiols Herman’s Hermits is back with vocal contributions to a Buffalo Springfield-Rolling Stones hybrid cover created by The Weeklings. Other veteran artists with new tunes include Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Jon Spencer. There’s also a plethora of brand new tunes from our friends at Rum Bar Records, including the kickoff of a new monthly singles campaign by The Dogmatics. There’s hot new singles from Rum Bar regulars The Laissez Fairs, Cheap Cassettes, along with Junior Varsit, Joe Jennings MVP’s, and a Dogmatics side project called Hotbox. We're going where the sun shines brightly,We're going where the sea is blue…1986 really was very Cliff. He had celebrated his first No1 of the 80s with the cast of The Young Ones, featured in some devastating billboard action in the (rerun) finale of the aforementioned BBC comedy show, been covered by the TVam rat and gerbil, and even had one of his most famous songs feature on a rather unique (and quite frankly ghastly) novelty Euro hit. And in July of the very same year, this very prominent track (it's Summer Holiday folks!), Cliff's ubiquitous seasonal anthem to double decker buses and Una Stubbs, was sitting proudly as track 1 side 2 on the latest NOW, That's What I Call Music album. But wait! The gloriously designed blue sky and beach umbrella that housed the latest variously compiled pop selection was not to feature such 1986 chart toppers as Wham!, Dr and the Medics and Chris De Burgh(!). This wasn't the impending 7th volume of the (rapidly becoming) world famous series of compilations, this was NOW - The Summer Album, and it was…well, different.Just as the wonderful team had done in November 1985 with NOW - The Christmas Album, here was the brand's second venture into a ‘theme'. And what a theme it was! Four decades of summer anthems, summer hits, sizzling memories - phew what a scorcher! But as it transpires, with guest Tim Worthington, we discover that the album announced from the pages of Smash Hits in July 1986 (featuring the most summery of acts, The Jesus and Mary Chain!) was much more than that just sun loungers and factor 30. Because growing up in the 70s/80s in the UK summer was often quite different indeed! What NOW - The Summer Album perhaps did do, was provide a template of summers we all wished we'd known; a sixties summer of love, a fifties summer of rock n roll, a seventies summer of…cricket (?) and of course an eighties summer of Radio One roadshows, and quite probably, traffic jams.It was an album that also provided a range of genres, new bands from the past to discover and a template for all summer soundtracks to come. So, dive back into an iconic chapter in the NOW series. Find out how some VERY big pop names appeared (TWICE!), why sound effects always make summer songs better, how some songs were longer (and shorter!) than others and why John Menzies probably didn't anticipate how well this summer set would sell. And importantly, remember your Plymouth dealer is, indeed, a dealing man.
Forty years on from their debut, The Jesus and Mary Chain are back with a corking new album, plus local baroque-folkers French For Rabbits, and Engelbert Humperdinck.

Tomorrow (April 20) is a sort of unofficial holiday for those of us who are obsessed with music. It’s Record Store Day! To prime myself, and hopefully you fellow music nerds, tonight’s episode is devoted to songs about records, record stores, and the people like us who collect them! It’s another wide range of material, from classic beat sounds of the 60s (Tweeds) to late 70s power pop (The Mumbles, Milk ‘n’ Cookies) to self-reverential 80s alternative rockers (The Jesus & Mary Chain) and current garage and punk along with plenty of singer/songwriters of all eras! I’m hoping this fires you all up to get out there and find your wishlist tomorrow! What are y’all looking for? Let me know what treats you discover! This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with the author of the 33 ⅓ book dedicated to the legendary Britpop band Pulp's renowned album This is Hardcore, Jane Savidge. As co-founder and co-head of legendary PR company Savage & Best, Jane Savidge is widely credited as being one of the main instigators of the Britpop movement that swept the UK in the mid 1990s. During this time, Savage & Best represented Suede, Pulp, The Verve, Elastica and Longpigs, whilst representing many other artists of the era including the Cranberries, The Fall, and Jesus and Mary Chain. She is the author of Lunch With The Wild Frontiers (2019) and Here They Come With Their Make Up On: Suede, Coming Up and More Adventures Beyond The Wild Frontiers (2022). This Is Hardcore is Pulp's cry for help. A giant, sprawling, flawed masterpiece of a record, the 1998 album manages to tackle some of the most inappropriate grown-up issues of the day – fame, aging, mortality, drugs, and pornography – and still come out crying and laughing on the other side. In this episode host Michael Shields and Jane Savidge dig into the weighty themes present in This is Hardcore revolving around fame, aging, success, and pornography. They expound upon the “Michael Jackson Incident” which propelled lead singer Jarvis Cocker to unfathomable fame, how Jarvis used music and the crafting of This is Hardocre as catharsis for his real life struggles, what the final legacy of Pulp might be, and ultimately they celebrate a 33 ⅓ book that serves as a love letter to a remarkable album.Grab a copy of Jane Savidge's This is Hardcore here!
In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles welcomes accountant and live music enthusiast Steve Pothel, a prominent figure from Charles' book, "Ticket Stub Stories: A Memoir of Live Music." Joining them is co-host and producer Doug Florzak. Steve reminisces about his early concert experiences, correcting his memory about his first concert, which turned out to be The Cure's "Wish" tour followed by Lollapalooza ‘92 before U2's Zoo TV show. They discuss iconic venues like The World (now known by various names) and Alpine Valley, sharing stories from their concert adventures. Steve recalls a memorable moment during an Ice Cube performance at Lollapalooza involving a sod fight instigated by the rapper, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. The conversation shifts to their DJing days at a bar called the Tender Trap, where Steve and Charles spun records for an alternative night. They reminisce about attending concerts together, including a memorable encounter with L7 at Lounge Axe, arranged through Louie, who happened to be related to the drummer. Steve also recounts their experiences at House of Blues shows, including a chaotic Danzig concert where the crowd was rowdy, and a Monster Magnet show where Louie's connection secured them access to the Foundation Room. They delve into their shared love for bands like The Psychedelic Furs and their numerous concert outings together, highlighting the influence of music on their lives and relationships. Reflecting on their concert experiences, they share anecdotes of meeting band members and navigating the vibrant Chicago music scene. Throughout the episode, Steve and Charles' passion for live music shines through, offering listeners a glimpse into their memorable concert journeys.Steve also reminisces about a memorable encounter at the Foundation Room, where he found himself chatting with members of Stabbing Westward and Monster Magnet. The lively atmosphere of the venue, complete with private rooms for bands and a third-floor balcony offering prime seating, sets the stage for unexpected interactions. Steve recounts how Monster Magnet's Phil reached out to invite Lisa, his girlfriend, to their show, ultimately sending a limo to pick her up from a wedding reception. Reflecting on past concerts, Steve shares his disappointing experiences at shows by System of a Down and The Killers, citing crowd behavior and sound quality as factors. Charles joins the conversation, recalling their shared love for live music and their experiences attending concerts together, including memorable shows by the Psychedelic Furs. The discussion turns somber as they remember Mars Williams, the saxophonist for the Psychedelic Furs, who passed away after battling cancer. Despite the loss, they cherish the memories of his electrifying performances.BANDS:Adele, Alanis Morissette, Cypress Hill, Harry Styles, House of Pain, Ice Cube, Imagine Dragons, Jesus and Mary Chain, Joan Jett, Journey, Korn, L7, Led Zeppelin II, Liquid Soul, Lush, Metric, Ministry, Monster Magnet, Monster Magnet, Pearl Jam, Porno for Pyros, Psychedelic Furs, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, REM, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Stabbing Westward, Stabbing Westward, Stone Temple Pilots, System of a Down, Temple of the Dog, The Cult, The Cult, The Cure, The Cure, The Killers, The Psychedelic Furs, Two Ton Boa, U2, Wetleg.VENUES:Alpine Valley (East Troy, Wisconsin), Aragon Ballroom (Chicago, Illinois), Chastain Park (Atlanta, Georgia), House of Blues (Chicago, Illinois), Lounge Axe (Chicago, Illinois), The Congress (Chicago, Illinois), The Metro (Chicago, Illinois), The World Music Theatre (Tinley Park, Illinois). Ten inch records are the forgotten treasures of my library. They’re housed in a little side section of my entertainment center, and most are rarely touched. This is why a couple of weeks ago I decided to have a marathon listening session of those very records. These sort of releases generally form a handful of different types of material. They can be extended singles filled with previously unreleased bonus tracks (Guided By Voices, Jesus & Mary Chain). They can be rarities collections of b-sides or outtakes (The Clash, Bad Brains). Or they can be fully-fledged brand new releses (Geoff Palmer & Lucy Ellis, The Coolies). Plus, this theme allows me to celebrate the 11th year anniversary of the reunion of The Replacements! Songs For Slim came out on March 5, 2013, and this obviously led to their hitting the road a year later. Topping off their set, I also included the cover of “Route 66” that was the highlight of their 1987 “Alex Chilton” EP. Thanks also must go to various folks that had suggestions for tonight’s show, including the band White Rose Motor Oil, who contributed the tracks of the last set of tonight’s broadcast.
