What is a Jedi? Is it a religion? To be a warrior? Are they the Light of the galaxy? No hiding the ball on this one. I'll tell you. To be a Jedi is to act a certain way in any given situation. You're given hate — respond with gentleness. You're presented with fear —- you choose faith and courage. You're given war —- then you fight for peace and with no hatred in your heart. You fight for tomorrow. This new Walk The Way podcast is a rundown of a recent post, Fight For Better Days, inspired by the Ahsoka series, the music of Noah Gundersen and the writings of Marcus Aurelius. In this episode of Can't Find My Way Home I was joined by Ryan Ferris. Calling from his current base in New Zealand, we talk about his journey so far - both musically and geographically. Ryan tells us about his adventures busking in Berlin, and trying to make a living from that, as well as busking his way through 20 countries to date.. We talk musical influencesl influences and transitioning from the folk singer-songwriter scene into Berlin's renowned electronic music scene and how this change led him to start his own new project - Beacon Bloom. Ryan describes the project as fitting broadly into the genres of electronica and melodic house music, and there's a multitude of elements and influences that can be heard in the band's sound. We also touch on Intentional Events in Christchurch and what other collaboartive events are happening in the local arts scene. Byland - "Mine" from the 2020 self-released album Gray. For her latest LP Gray, Albuquerque-based artist Alie Renee Byland (who records under the name Byland) immersed herself in the Seattle music scene, collaborating with producer and multi-instrumentalist Nathan Yaccino (known for his work with Soundgarden, Noah Gundersen, Brandi Carlile). For today's featured track, she invited local musicians Abby Gundersen and Meagan Grandall (aka Lemolo) into the Ballard recording studio. In a press release, she tells us: “Mine” is about realizing that my energy is finite and that I have permission to say “no”. I grew up idealizing the notion of giving without limit. When I felt drained, I thought there was something wrong with me. Last Summer, I was feeling especially emotionally and relationally exhausted. I wrote this song while I had an overwhelming amount of calls, emails and texts to respond to. I intentionally wanted “Mine”’s rhythm and offset melody to feel abrupt at times, to express the sense of being pulled in polarizing directions. I was nervous to bring another track to my producer, Nathan Yaccino, given that we were well into the recording process already. But after sharing a simple phone demo, we promptly sat down together and fleshed out the piano tracks, vocals and overall vision for this song. Abby Gunderson’s cinematic strings and the haunting harmonies of Meagan Grandall helped fortify and exemplify the internal expanse this song symbolizes. A liberating anthem, “Mine” is perhaps the most emblematic of the record’s ode to prioritizing mental health, by giving a voice to subconscious thoughts, and creating space within, a space that’s mine.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week, I speak with Paul Johnson, who performs under the moniker Canyon City, about two of his latest singles - Catch Fire and Purple Horizon. Since its inception in 2015, Canyon City has become known for its distinctive whispery vocals layered over intimate acoustics orbiting candidly emotional storytelling. As Johnson self-released a series EPs and LPs over the last five years, the industry took notice, with Canyon City frequenting Spotify editorial playlists and winning praise from media like NPR, Paste, American Songwriter and more. His combined streams on Spotify alone surpass 100 million, with an average of 1.3 million monthly listeners. It's quite easy to see exactly why Johnson is a streaming giant. His songwriting—fusing conversational narratives with modern-folk textures in the vein of Gregory Alan Isakov, The Tallest Man On Earth, and Noah Gundersen—is rich in emotional detail. Now, Canyon City prepares to release Circling The Sun, a warm, inviting and sweetly cinematic EP primarily written and produced in household settings, save for a bit of recording at the local Library. He teamed back up with Nashville-based producer Zachary David who added his own homespun elements to the project. David, who is also a TV/film composer, used found objects (think couch kickdrums, t-shirt slapping snares and crumpled paper percussion) around the home when producing the EP, partially out of necessity due to Covid19. But the unorthodox arrangements only enhance the EP's lived-in aesthetic. This week, I speak with Paul Johnson, who performs under the moniker Canyon City, about what "modern folk" means to him, growing up and playing in a folk trio with his parents in Fargo, North Dakota, and writing emotional and vividly descriptive songs (and speculate as to why so many of them revolve around fire and water). At just 30 years old, Noah Gundersen has already managed to accomplish more than most musicians do in a lifetime. The Seattle-based singer and songwriter has put out more than a dozen albums and EPs, which have been heard millions upon millions of times. His music has been featured on popular TV shows like Sons Of Anarchy, The Vampire Diaries, The Following and Nashville. He's roved the planet to play concerts to passionate audiences everywhere. Long before he was an accomplished artist though, Gundersen was a homeschooled kid from a religious family who tried to combat his loneliness and boredom by teaching himself to play guitar. Recently, prior to a show at The Back Room @ Colectivo, Gundersen met My First Band host Tyler Maas backstage for a fun and informative discussion about his formative musical endeavors. After talking about accidentally releasing a record called Lover the exact same day Taylor Swift dropped an album with the same name, Gundersen opened up about self-recording a batch of cringe-inducing songs when he was 13, finding early inspiration from bands like Pedro The Lion and Dashboard Confessional, forming "terrible" emo bands in his teens, playing shows in a friend's garage in his small Washington hometown, and making the decision to fully commit to a solo project. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Noah Gundersen ("Lover").

In the first episode of a two-part Coffee with Comrades special, Gaven Morgan drops in to talk about anarchism, Christian mysticism, and the Eastern Orthodox church with Pearson. In this wide-ranging conversation, we discuss Gaven’s background in the church, Gaven’s propensity for “criminal anarchy,” the process of radicalization, how the Eastern Orthodox church is organized, spiritual ritual, early Church history, saintly stories, the nature of authority, and power vs. domination. We also nerd out over Dungeons and Dragons way too much. Episode 27 is more of an introduction to the topics at hand so folks who are unfamiliar with the ideas of Christian mysticism or Orthodoxy can follow along. Episode 28 builds upon these conversations and explores the nuances of political, economic, and social relations within the Eastern Orthodox church. No matter what your politics or religious views, we hope you get a lot out of this dialogue. Tune in next week for Pt. II of our conversation with Gaven. Until then, pour yourself a cup of coffee and enjoy. **Note** It was actually Sinclair Lewis whose quote Pearson borrows about American fascism, not Upton Sinclair. Tentokrát zcela opustíme témata typu zločin a trest, nebe a peklo a zbraně všeho druhu a budeme se věnovat hlavně duševním stavům pro jaro typickým, tedy hlavně nejrůznějším milostným vzplanutím. Z předměstí Detroitu do výšin pop music nás zavedou Frontier Ruckus, Noah Gundersen nás přesvědčí o tom, že i mezi Vikingy se najdou jemné a citlivé duše a Woods Brothers zahrají své abstraktní country blues.

Harrison Whitford is one of our favorite emerging artists of 2018. His debut album, "Afraid of Everything," is an intimate collection of sonic Polaroids, each drenched in awe, anguish and nostalgia. Whitford has created a listening space that’s melodically timeless and lyrically contemplative, akin to artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, Bob Dylan, Elliott Smith and Noah Gundersen. Listen in as we discuss his journey as a musician, his creative process and what life is like as a full-time artist! Featured songs in the interview: "Take a Walk" "Part Time Heart" Follow him on Instagram for upcoming tour information and stream his album here!
With the release of his third album, White Noise, Noah Gundersen has taken a huge step forward in his sound. Whilst on a whistle stop tour of the UK he made time to catch up with Maz.
Musical guest Noah Gundersen joins Eugene Cordero, Toni Charline, and Matt Besser for this week's improv4humans! Noah Gundersen released his third album, "White Noise," last September. It marks a shift in the Seattle singer-songwriter's folk music. Gundersen brings in a backing band on several songs to give the record a fuller, uplifting rock sound -- though he includes some plaintive piano ballads as well. Gundersen visited the CPR Performance Studio accompanied by his sister Abby on violin. He played stripped-down versions of two songs from "White Noise" along with a new B-side. He also spoke with Jeremy Petersen about the decision to retool his sound, reconnecting with his siblings by playing music together and learning to embrace his early musical output.
