En esta edición de nuestro podcast estrenamos 'It's Nice To Be With You', el nuevo álbum del guitarrista Ken Navarro.
Moonchild Sanelly is going stratospheric! She's collaborated with Beyonce, Gorillaz and Self Esteem to name just a few. During our conversation, we get a glimpse into her upbringing, hear her thoughts on power and understand why she never uses the word 'try'. (Heads up - she does mention a sexual assault). We've developed our On First Listen series to give us a chance to explore albums that we didn't know but had heard about for years. Maybe a friend recommended it, perhaps it was popular at a time in our lives when it slipped past us or maybe we'd seen in on all-time lists. King Crimson's debut fit into the third category as many progressive rock fans hold In The Court Of The Crimson King in very high regard. And with many talented line-ups over the years including Greg Lake on bass & vocals, Ian McDonald on keys and many other things, and Robert Fripp on guitar on this album (with future versions featuring John Wetton, Boz Burrell, Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, Adrian Belew, Mel Collins and many, many more) we figured we'd give it a go. However, while the musicianship is off the charts and they experiment with many keys, times and toys (the new mellotron was driving much of their experimental sound), sometimes it's not terribly listenable. 21st Century Schitzoid Man is abrupt and in your face as a protest to the Vietnam War but isn't a toe tapper. The wistful I Listen To The Wind is 180 degree turn as a lovely ballad but is more than 6 minutes long. And Epitaph, Moonchild (nothing like the Iron Maiden song) and The Court Of The Crimson King though they have moments of beauty and style fail to land in the fun zone. While many will appreciate the music for it's complexity and degree of difficulty, it's not an album you put on in the background of a party. Perhaps our blues based rock brains aren't mature enough to understand but we find 70s era Yes and Genesis far easier to digest and enjoy. Note: We recorded this a year before releasing it as we planned for it to be our first On First Listen but scheduling necessities caused us to leave it on the shelf. We mention that it's 54th anniversary is coming up but as we release this it's the 55th anniversary of original release. And it was before we interviewed director Toby Amies about his fabulous documentary King Crimson: In The Court Of The Crimson King for episode 158. Let's take a ride on Falcor and fly back to 1984! Mark welcomes fellow podcasters and movie lovers Josh and Joe from Video Dropbox to reopen The Neverending Story and celebrate the memorable Wolfgang Petersen movie's 40th anniversary. They follow little bullied Bastian and model tween Atreyu into the world of Fantasia, where there are Swamps of Sadness, sexy Sphinxes, and lots of amazing '80s practical effects. They discuss the trilogy of films, rave about the Limahl theme song, and wonder what even is Moon Child?
“They look like big, good, strong hands, don't they? I always thought that's what they were.” We watched “The Neverending Story” with our friend Jared Anderson and we've got some unresolved trauma to work through. Listen, this movie scarred an entire generation of kids with some not-so-childlike themes - we're talking bullying, loss of a parent, despair, and the most noble horse you ever did see succumbing to the swamp of sadness. Needless to say we needed a therapist to walk us through our re-watch of this ‘80s fantasy classic so we called on good Judy Jared. Bastian Balthazar Bux (Barret Oliver) isn't like other boys - he's a sensitive loner who draws unicorns when he should be paying attention in class. He also loves to read. When he finds the gigantic book titled The Neverending Story he takes that as a challenge and soon we meet Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) and Artax (RIP), and the colorful (gay) inhabitants of “Fantasia”. Every girl and gay boy had a crush on Atreyu and we all wanted to be The Childlike Empress (Tami Stronach). Don't even get us started on Falkor - we're still waiting for our very own Luck Dragon. We may still be getting over all the feels this movie stirred up but the film itself is a beautiful pre-CG fanstasy masterpiece with an absolutely killer theme song. Let's all give the Childlike Empress a new name and save Fantasia from The Nothing! Say it with us… MoonChild! Ben Werther is a conceptual artist, born in Nashville and living in New York, whose new exhibition at No Gallery, “WHEN YOU CAN NO LONGER SPEAK, SING ME A SONG.” , presents a fascinating sequence of photographs that initially look like on the ground photojournalistic documents of armed combat. Upon further inquiry, however, you learn that these images were captured during Werther's attendance at a number of MilSim LARP rituals, in which Americans don military fatigues and arm themselves with airsoft rifles and pantomime military conflict. The exhibition also offers the work in book form, along with the cryptic writing of the artist complicating the images' meaning. Here, Adam and Ben speak about the work, MilSim, the cultural condition of LARPing and identity craft, Thomas Ligotti True Detective Season 1, mythology, Joseph Campbell, and more.

In this week's podcast, I interview Briana and Nil in the second part of our series, and show how petty I Am. We delve into the rivalry between the Chainsaws of Scarezone 1, who are celebrated and honored on the "murder wall of fame" with cool action figures, and the hardworking but underappreciated chainsaws of Terror Tram get nothing. I put Briana on trial for sparking a war not just between the chainsaws but also among other scare actors of Horror Nights, highlighting the escalating tensions. Concluding the episode, I declare my intention to hunt down Briana and Nil at Horror Nights for a dramatic confrontation, until i get my Titanic drawn moment. This playful yet intense declaration of war and ongoing rivalry between me and Briana and the other scareactors will only make me work harder to develope my character in HHN until I'm imortalized so hopefully I can finally retire. The episode captures the humor and competitiveness of the scare actor community, with a focus on the emerging conflicts and the personal stakes involved.

In this captivating episode of my podcast, I am joined by the remarkable Moon Child Nil, whose unique perspective enriches our discussion as we delve into the intersectionality of being people of color and embracing the gothic subculture. Moon Child Nil offers profound insights into the nuances of navigating both identities within the broader cultural landscape, shedding light on the shared experiences, challenges, and triumphs that come with embracing alternative lifestyles. Together, we explore the complexities of representation, belonging, and self-expression, forging a deep connection rooted in our mutual understanding of what it means to carve out our identities in spaces often marked by misconceptions and stereotypes. Throughout our conversation, Moon Child Nil's wisdom and authenticity illuminate the importance of embracing one's true self, regardless of societal expectations or preconceived notions, making this episode a compelling exploration of identity and belonging in the modern world. Additionally, we get into the humorous dynamics of Horror Nights monsters' playful pettiness when they find themselves omitted from Moon Child Nil's "Murder wall." Through experience and witty observations, we unpack the comical yet relatable aspect of striving for recognition within the horror community. This lighthearted exploration highlights the camaraderie and competitiveness that often define these interactions, showcasing how even in the realm of scares and screams, there's room for a touch of humor and friendly rivalry. As we share our own experiences of principle for a spot on the coveted wall, we find common ground in navigating the delicate balance between aspiration and amusement, adding a delightful layer of levity to our conversation.

Let's meet Kizzy Ann Stamps and her dog, Shag. Kizzy Ann is called Moon Child by her mama because when she was younger the neighbor boy accidentally let his scythe drop and her face was cut from just under her eye to her mouth in a crescent moon shape. She has never forgiven Frank Charles for her injury. Mrs. Warren, Kizzy's old teacher, encouraged all her students to write to their new teacher at the white school. Miss Anderson learns a lot about the life of someone that has the most special dog in the world and a huge scar that people stare at and the many differences between her world and Kizzy Ann's. It is 1963 and the schools were integrating but attitudes were far from love thy neighbor. Kizzy's brother, James, doesn't have any teachers like Miss Andersonnin high school. He said his teacher would not put the integrated students on the roll and they wouldn't even give them books! It was like they were invisible. His JV football team didn't lose a game but they were never mentioned in the newspaper. Losing a dream is hard. James and his buddies get into mischief. They excite the neighbor's cows and the cows plow down Frank Charles' daddy's shed. Kizzy Ann stared in disbelief when Frank Charles took the blame for what James and his friends had done. When she asked him why he told her, “It was the right thing to do.” The author, Jeri Watts, gives readers a look at life during a different era. Step with us into Kizzy Ann's shoes. Some people do the right thing and others do not! We meet a cantankerous Scotsman, Mr. McKenna, who trains Shag and Kizzy Ann so they can perform in a dog trial. Will Kizzy Ann and Shag even be allowed to compete? In the midst of dog training and spelling bees the president is assassinated. Kizzy Ann expresses her emotions so well. “I cannot believe the upside-downness of the world. I could feel a blanket of sadness covering our school and our state and our nation.” The kindness of this little book will touch your heart! When Frank Charles' mama has a seizure and he goes berserk, Kizzy Ann takes charge and calms him down and helps his mama in a gentle way that she'd seen her Sunday School teacher do for a student that had seizures. It was the right thing to do. Isn't it funny that we never forget doing the right thing? You won't regret meeting Kizzy Ann Stamps! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/recapbookchat/message

Hey folks, Luke & I are back at it—picking up our saga of the life of the psychic spy, Nazi Nostradamus, yacht orgy organizer, sexual blackmailer, & British intel asset named Erik Jan Hanussen. Subscribe to the PPM Patreon to access the full 2 & a half hours of this EP, as well as the brand new "Speculative Swiss-mania" double header: patreon.com/ParaPowerMapping This one contains some shocking & possibly novel speculations... Trust me, it's a good one. You can also listen to the unabridged version on Luke's Premium Feed, which you can find here: https://www.patreon.com/ThingsObserved/ Make sure to give Luke a follow on Twitter @thingobserver & support him as you're able. Klonny Confessional: I used to bump "Things Observed" EPs on Alfred Kinsey & occulted Catholic bishops back before I'd even started my own parapolitical podcasting project, so it's been both a helluva trip & "Mission: Accomplished" kinda vibe getting to work w/ Luke. Def give his stacked back catalog a listen. But before we get into an index of what you can expect, a quick note about the audio fidelity. Luke and I unfortunately ran into some difficulties—whether caused by faltering Internet bandwidth or else one or the both of us unknowingly making ambient sounds on our end... You might notice the occasional plosive pop or a background ruffling in some places. It's infrequent & hopefully barely noticeable, or else at least not distracting. Either way, don't worry, we already have a plan in place to ensure we have top-notch audio quality for the final installment. Thanks for understanding this learning moment for the both of us. In today's EP: We pick back up w/ EJH's dalliance in film & the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari-esque silent movie that he produced, which stars himself as a Sherlock Holmes-y psychic detective type who must rescue young Viennese dancers from a "Indian fakir" who is forcing them into sexual slavery thru hypnotic means—a curious inversion of Hanussen's own proclivity for pimping. From there, we turn our attention to Secret Agent EJH; his hypnotic feeding of tobacco magnate Hans Hauser; their scheme to sell surplus military equipment to the Greeks post-WWI; Hanussen's debut as a British intel asset, likely via the SIS front Tobacco Co Ltd or else the manager of a bar for British officers in Cairo named Philip Neufeld; EJH investigating hashish smugglers for the Brits; and a breakdown of the itinerary overlaps & textual synchronicities that may support my theory that Hanussen & Crowley met as early as 1922 in Cairo. Furthermore, they may have even shared handlers or gotten up to something espionage-related together... If you want the complete rundown of the mandrake root mythic valences, the creepy Moonchild-esque homunculi in Hanns Hewers Ewers's fiction (the novelist-spy that both EJH & Crowley were tight with), Hitler's hypnosis lessons w/ Hanussen, or the too-many coprophagia puns stuffed into this installment... You can find a more in-depth index over on the Patreon. We had the pleasure of interviewing NIKI over Zoom video!Jakarta-born, LA-based singer-songwriter, and producer NIKI releases the visual for her track “The Apartment We Won't Share.”Directed by Isaac Ravishankara, the new visual for “The Apartment We Won't Share” compliments the nostalgic track that reflects on what could have been with a past relationship. NIKI is contemplative as she strolls through her apartment alone before picking up her guitar to craft the introspective song. Most recently, NIKI made her NPR Tiny Desk debut where she delivered a carefully crafted & stripped-back performance of a handful of songs from her sophomore album Nicole, before closing with her hit single “Every Summertime."Following her sold-out North American headlining tour last fall, NIKI will be bringing her live show to cities across the globe with her 2023 world tour which will span across North America, Asia, Europe, and Australia. The run also includes performances at festivals including Head in the Clouds NYC & LA, Lollapalooza, and Outside Lands. The full list of dates is below; please visit https://nikizefanya.com/ for more information.Previously, NIKI released the music video for her track “Backburner.” The video is deliberate and intimate, taking viewers into her world as she watches old footage recorded on her camcorder and re-lives fond memories of a past relationship.Last summer, NIKI released her sophomore album Nicole, a project that sees her where she shines, returning to her singer-songwriter roots in a carefully crafted coming-of-age juncture that sees present-day NIKI meet with her teenage self. The album was released to critical acclaim by the likes of NPR, Billboard, Vanity Fair, and V Magazine, who hailed Nicole as “NIKI's piece-de-resistance that kicks off an exceptional new chapter for the burgeoning songstress.” NIKI also released her live album Live at the Wiltern last month, which features live recordings performed at the final show of NIKI's sold-out headlining tour at the Los Angeles venue last October.NIKI has had an impressive career thus far, amassing over 2.1 billion streams worldwide and opening for Taylor Swift on tour when she was just 15. In addition to performing at Coachella and embarking on her headlining North American tour last fall, she has also headlined at 88rising's Head in the Clouds Festival in Los Angeles, New York, Manila, and Jakarta.ABOUT NIKISince breaking through with her 2018 EP Zephyr, NIKI has made a powerful imprint on the pop scene, amassing a devoted global fanbase with over 2.1 billion streams to date and making history as the first Indonesian artist ever to perform at Coachella. But after delivering her critically acclaimed debut album MOONCHILD, the Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter felt compelled to completely reexamine her artistic process—a move that found her revisiting the vast catalog of unfiltered and indie-folk-leaning songs she'd created in high school. As she returned to the stream-of-consciousness approach to songwriting that defined her earliest material, the 23-year-old musician soon arrived at her sophomore album Nicole: a boldly self-possessed body of work written entirely by NIKI, spotlighting her finespun storytelling and warmly expressive vocals more fully than ever before. With the album's first half comprised of new or never-before-heard songs and its latter half featuring her favorite tracks from her widely beloved YouTube channel, NIKI imbues her songs with the kind of lived-in specificity that immediately reconnects the listener with the rush and devastation of their own first love.We want to hear from you!
