This week on The Devil's Ledger, Branden sends some love to everyone currently getting battered by wind, rain and coastal flooding—and finally answers a question some of us have somehow avoided asking our entire lives: What the hell actually is a nor'easter? Then we head into considerably darker territory. THE CREEPIEST THING I HEARD THIS WEEK: THE MOSQUITO Brazilian authorities say they've captured Jorlan Lopes da Silva, a suspected serial killer nicknamed “Mosquito” because of his thin, frail build. Police accuse da Silva of involvement in sixteen murders around Mulungu in northeastern Brazil. Investigators say he evaded capture by disappearing into dense vegetation and living in makeshift camps hidden in the wilderness. But it's the bizarre circumstances of his arrest that elevate this one into Creepiest Thing territory: when police finally cornered him after a two-day pursuit, da Silva was reportedly wearing a dress, wig and painted fingernails—and carrying an unrelated baby in his arms. THIS WEEK ON THE DEVIL WITHIN: GUSTAVE The New Monsters has come to an end, which means we're returning to something considerably more familiar: Serial killers. Sort of. Our new three-part series travels to Burundi and the shores of Lake Tanganyika for the extraordinary story of Gustave, the enormous, heavily scarred Nile crocodile blamed in legend for more than 300 human deaths. That number has never been verified—and naturalist Patrice Faye offered far more conservative estimates—but behind the mythology was a very real, exceptionally large crocodile that Faye spent years tracking. How do you hunt a serial killer with no motive, fingerprints or confession—one who can simply disappear beneath the surface of one of Africa's great lakes? Meet Gustave: The Killer of Lake Tanganyika. CRIMINAL MISCHIEF: TOMASZ KOSOWSKI Over on Criminal Mischief, Carolyn investigates the extraordinary case of plastic surgeon Tomasz Kosowski, recently found guilty of murdering attorney Steven Cozzi. Cozzi vanished from his Largo, Florida, law office in March 2023. His wallet, phone and keys were left behind, while investigators discovered blood inside the men's restroom. His body has never been recovered. Then Kosowski made the already extraordinary case even stranger: facing first-degree murder and the possibility of a death sentence, he represented himself. Carolyn breaks down the evidence, the disappearance and one of the stranger murder trials we've encountered in quite some time. THE SLIPPERY: THE PONZI KILLER MOM Scott and Nancy bring us the rise and spectacular collapse of Natalie Cochran. Natalie and Michael Cochran appeared to have everything: high-school sweethearts turned successful suburban family, with Natalie working as a pharmacist and Michael as a popular baseball coach and businessman. Behind that success was a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme involving supposedly lucrative government and defense contracts. As the money poured in, so did the lies—and when Michael began asking questions, prosecutors said Natalie chose murder over exposure. A jury ultimately convicted her of killing her husband with insulin. Money. Marriage. Fraud. Defense contracts. Murder. This week, The Slippery takes on The Ponzi Killer Mom. THIS WEEK IN HORROR: VICTORIAN PSYCHO Finally, we're going Gothic. Maika Monroe stars as Winifred Notty, an eccentric young governess who arrives at a remote English manor in 1858 to educate the children of a wealthy family. Then people begin disappearing. This special episode of the Alabama Saltwater Fishing Report brings together Joe Baya, Butch Thierry, Dr. Dylan Kiene, Capt. Tanner Deas, and Capt. Branden Collier for a recap of the "Bama Boys" trip to Panama City Beach. The crew talks through what it is like for Alabama anglers to bring their own boat to the Emerald Coast, learn a different style of bottom fishing, and target gag grouper, red grouper, snapper, triggerfish, and other species on natural bottom instead of the artificial reefs and rigs they are used to fishing closer to home. The conversation starts with bait, where Branden and Butch describe stumbling into a huge cloud of pinfish, white trout, hardtails, and other bait near St. Andrews Pass. That lucky bait stop ended up being a major part of the trip, especially once the crew realized that live pinfish were the ticket for gag grouper. From there, the group digs into what made the Panama City Beach fishery feel so different: closer natural bottom, fewer red snapper compared to Alabama, strong red grouper numbers, lots of triggerfish, spread-out ledges and low-relief structure, and grouper bites that often came only after a long soak. The guys also break down what they learned from fishing rough conditions, losing fish in the rocks, experimenting with 60- and 100-pound leader, using live bait versus slow-pitch jigs, and trying to understand how grouper move across natural bottom. They talk through the value of local knowledge, electronics, public numbers, drifting versus spot-locking, and how one good rock can change the whole day. The trip was not without problems, including trolling motor trouble, engine trouble, a flat tire, a broken rod, and a late-night boat-plug mishap, but the crew still came home with a solid box of fish, a pile of lessons, and a stronger appreciation for safety gear, Sea Tow, VHF radios, and being prepared offshore. The episode closes with Tom Hilton of Hilton's Offshore Charts joining Joe and Butch for a detailed look at the offshore setup in the Northern Gulf. Tom explains how to read chlorophyll, sea surface temperature, altimetry, current edges, and historical satellite shots to understand where blue water, bait, and pelagic fish may be moving. The discussion focuses on the water setting up from the Destin and Alabama side toward the Nipple, 131 Hole, Nakika, Blind Faith, and nearby offshore structure, with practical insight into how anglers can use Hilton's trip-planning tools to make better decisions before burning fuel. In this week's Northwest Florida Fishing Report, host Joe Baya joins Alabama Saltwater Fishing Report host Butch Thierry, Capt. Branden Collier of Capt. Collier's Charters, Capt. Tanner Deas of Dauphin Island Fishing Charters, and Dr. Dylan Kiene, aka Dr. Doormat, to recap a wild Panama City grouper trip that produced gag grouper, red grouper, red snapper, triggerfish, and plenty of lessons about fishing natural bottom. Joe and Butch also talk with Tom Hilton of Hilton's Realtime Navigator about using chlorophyll, sea-surface temperature, current, and altimetry imagery to locate productive offshore water and plan more efficient trips. Branden, Tanner, Dylan, and Butch break down what worked while targeting grouper on low-relief natural bottom around Panama City. Live pinfish were the most dependable bait, especially with aggressive triggerfish quickly destroying softer cigar minnows and dead baits. The group found that patience mattered, with some spots requiring 15 to 30 minutes before the grouper bite developed, and many of the best bites coming with baits laid directly on the bottom with slack line. Heavy 60- to 100-pound leaders still resulted in plenty of break-offs when gags reached holes and ledges. Slow-pitch jigging also produced, with JYG and Johnny Jigs getting bites when live bait became difficult to fish. One of the biggest takeaways was using electronics to find productive zones rather than relying on a single waypoint, then drifting and repeatedly working the surrounding natural bottom. Despite trolling-motor problems, engine trouble, a flat tire, and eventually breaking down offshore, the crew still put together a strong box of fish and emphasized the importance of offshore preparation, a hardwired VHF, and having Sea Tow available. Tom Hilton explains how anglers can use Hilton's Realtime Navigator to build a more complete offshore picture when individual chlorophyll images are limited by cloud cover. Three-day chlorophyll views combine actual satellite shots to fill gaps, while sea-surface temperature imagery can be used alongside chlorophyll and altimetry to identify temperature breaks, color changes, current edges, weed lines, and areas likely to concentrate bait and pelagic fish. Hilton also demonstrates the Trip Planner, which allows anglers to map a route, calculate distance and estimated fuel use, save the trip, and compare the same route across different imagery layers. With cleaner water and favorable current features pushing into the northern Gulf, the conditions discussed in this episode show why stacking multiple sources of real offshore data can help anglers spend less time searching and more time fishing. Podcast 339 - 31 Years of McKendrick's Steak House, and What's New on the Menu - Chef Branden Holte McKendrick's is a Dunwoody institution. Claudia and Doug McKendrick opened it across from Perimeter Mall in 1995. It's been named one of the top five power bars in Atlanta and has won the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence every year since 2003. Servers who've been there more than a decade are still bringing out the same great steaks. That corner of Park Place has watched restaurants come and go, and McKendrick's just keeps holding it down. There's a new chef now. Branden Holte came on in June, brought in by operating partner Anthony Casiello. He's an Atlanta guy, and the first thing I wanted to know was whether he touched the steaks. He didn't. Same cuts, same purveyor, still Meats by Linz and the Linz Heritage Angus line. The real changes are in places you wouldn't think to look, like a rebuilt fish program where nothing goes to waste and a tuna tataki that replaced an old tuna tartare that had gotten a bit played out. Little changes, and they sound like they add up. If you've been to McKendrick's before but not lately, now's the time to go back.

Tanner and Branden break down their winning inshore slam strategy, including how they targeted redfish early, adjusted when the first plan did not feel right, found a 21-inch trout in an unexpected place, and finally landed the 22-inch flounder that helped put them over the top. Patric shares a wild tournament story involving boat trouble, a lost Yamaha screw, trolling-motor improvisation, a lead sinker turned into a temporary repair, and finally salvaging the weekend with shallow flounder, trout, and a redfish. Dylan adds the science-minded flounder perspective, explaining how he and his team abandoned their original plan, found deeper flounder patterns, caught fish on Coastal Brew and Down South plastics, and brought in a strong live-flounder total for the CCA hatchery effort. The roundtable also digs into the details that serious inshore anglers think about during tournament season: when to leave fish, how to recognize a real pattern, why small flounder and big flounder may not always feed the same way, how live bait compares to artificials in deep water, when slip corks make sense for flounder and trout, and why jig-head weight, scent, current, boat positioning, and nighttime dock-light fishing can all matter. Branden’s father was dying of cancer in his fifties. Wanting to help, Branden talked his parents into moving in with him so he could assist them. His dad loved the tropics but could no longer travel, so Branden got creative. He landscaped a pond behind his house, stocked it with fish, and installed a waterfall that tumbled over rocks. He trucked in three loads of beach sand, added banana trees, lights, and tiki torches, and built an awning for shade. His dad spent his last days enjoying a backyard island paradise. Branden’s actions reflect the kind of harmony between parents and children envisioned in Exodus 20. There, God through Moses instructed the children of Israel: “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12). That directive grows out of the commands to love and respect our heavenly Father (vv. 3-8) and bridges to the last five commands, which instruct us how to love and respect our fellow human beings. Don’t murder, don’t commit adultery, don’t steal, don’t lie, don’t covet (vv. 12-17). Honoring parents might come easily for some. For others, it’s extremely difficult. There’s too much pain and distrust. Old wounds refuse to heal. We can commit it to God our Father, who understands that pain. He enables us to live in His love.
