This is the final *weekly* episode of The After Eight Show thougfh we are doing three 'Best Of''s in the coming weeks.Lots of beautiful new music that we've been saving up over the past 12 months. It really is a fabulous selection this week!In our LUVVA COVER feature, we played a stripped back version of one of Tori Amos's most amazing songs. Jo Beth Young was asked to contribute a cover version to a tribute album which will be released in 2022. It truly is stunning and is a VERY appropriate way in which to close this feature in which we have played some really interesting takes on some fabulous songs.NEW MUSIC YOU JUST DON'T HEAR ANYWHERE ELSE!Playlist:Until I Fall – Lucinda ChuaSick Bed Blues – Buffalo NicholsToo Long – Cid RimWildfires – SAULTPick Me Up – Milan Ring, Jean DeauxYou Got One – Moonchild, Alex IsleyWhen it Gets Dark – Jamire Williams, Kenneth WhalumImpossible - Sin Fang, Sóley, and Örvar SmárasonMagpie Nest – SchlutiusDay After Tomorrow – Phoebe BridgersBe Free – Ny OhBittersweet – GaroniquePandora's Aquarium – Tori AmosPandora's Aquarium – Jo Beth Young (Luvva Cover feature)The Wounded Wolf – Ebersonroads – Bugge Wesseltoft, Håkon KornstadNew Wings - Alyssa BonaguraMidnight Chorus – Kathryn Williams, Carol Ann DuffyThe Bad Thing – The MysterinesIn Blur – DeafheavenCaring – Mathias EickLotus – Orions BelteMerge – Nic Evennett

More great New Music You Just Don't Hear Anywhere Else! in this week's episode. Our our ALBUM OF THE WEEK actually comes from last year but we have only just become aware of it and it is sensational! The album is 'Two Of Me' and it's by Momma. They're a brilliant 4-piece indie rock band from LA."Momma's Two Of Me is a twisted, enchanting carnival ride ... the music itself, which draws you in with grungy yet sunwashed chords. It's the aural version of when you close your eyes on a sunny day, heat pouring in red through the lids. “Bug House,” the sprawling opener, lulls you into a false sense of security before escalating into a vortex of heavy distortion." Paste In our Luvva Cover feature, we will be playing a really inventive version of one of The Beach Boys' best known songs. Lots more New Music You Just Don't Hear Anywhere Else in this week's show! This week, our ALBUM OF THE WEEK was 'Invisible Things' by Mari Conti."Mari Conti's new album delves into the darkness and light that can be found in life and the invisible ties that connect us all. It's refreshing to listen to an album that pushes the boundaries on what constitutes the mainstream way to create a song. The typical blueprint of tracks with an ABABCB structure has been chucked out the window on Mari Conti's album. “Invisible Things” is an album that is inherently its own in sound, style and structure. A breath of fresh air to listen to!" Pop MagIn our LUVVA COVER feature, we played a VERY atmospheric cover of a beautiful song by Moses Sumney. Kee'ahn is a young Australian singer - a proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. Kee'ahn weaves lush melodies and words reminiscent of heartbreak and healing. Her rich vocals and hopeful lyrics champion the idea that finding strength in our struggles, encourages us to reflect, reinvent, and rejoice in all of our own individual healing journeys. Our ambition every week is to introduce you to the music of at least 3 artists / bands who are new to you and whose music you'll want to explore. Our ALBUM OF THE WEEK, this week, is 'Area 52 Truck Stop' by Sylvia Bullett."I have been visualising post plague dance parties spinning this!"It features two members of iconic band Television – Fred Smith on bass and Richard Lloyd on guitar. The album is so named because she recorded it during Covid time and actually finished one of the earliest songs pulling up her truck alongside the legendary Area 52 Studios: Dave "Loveshack" Cook ran cables out to the truck cab for vocal mic and earphones- thus the inspiration for the album's name.In our LUVVA COVER feature, we will be playing an amazing instrumental cover of an iconic Radiohead song by a Lebanese violinist. Ara Malikian was a child prodigy, studied in Hanover and London, and now includes classical, experimental, ethnic (e.g. gipsy, Klezmer, Spanish and Argentinian) and modern compositions. Folk Radio UKIn our LUVVA COVER feature, we will be playing a cover of a massive Tik Tok viral hit by Beach Bunny in 2020. The cover version, by Paravi, is a complete transformation of the song and became a Tik Tok viral hit earlier this year!"Paravi's version of the song opens with her her softly stating, “I hate all men, but…” She then begins to sing in a deeply rich lower register transforming the upbeat garage song into one filled with loss and longing." Our ambition every week is to introduce you to the music of at least 3 artists / bands who are new to you and whose music you'll want to explore. Our ALBUM OF THE WEEK was 'Technicolour' by Geo Jordan.Haste magazine: "Multi-instrumentalist, producer, writer and, let's face it, musical expert, Geo Jordan just keeps getting better and better. Piano, bass and jazz drums are just some of the musical talents that Geo holds.""Jordan does not hold back with experimentation, allowing each track to take unexpected turns that surprise on the first listen, and delight on the second. One thing which is stark throughout is Jordan's vulnerability. His candid vocals sit in the eye of each sonic storm pulling together each of the musical elements to form an intense and emotional record." LICKS Mag review of Technicolour. In our Luvva Cover feature, we played a cover of an iconic song by Nirvana. The cover is by Memorial and it completely transforms the mood of the song and amplifies the lyrics. The song was released in 1992 (on Nirvana's second album, Nevermind). Two years later, Kurt Cobain committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. Music journalist Mark Deming suggested that hearing "Cobain sing 'and I swear that I don't have a gun' gives 'Come as You Are' an edge it was never meant to have when [Nevermind] was first released in 1991." Deming reasons that the "I don't have a gun" lyric is Cobain's "attempt to reassure listeners that ... his target is the world at large rather than the individuals in it, and that there was still room in this damaged world for everyone". Give it a listen and hear this beautifully tragic song interpreted in a new light.New Music You Just Don't Hear Anywhere Else!Playlist:damn – Ada LeaBack on Top – Buffalo NicholsVacancy (No One Near) – Son Lux, lojiiHide With You – Milan RingFigure It Out – Geo Jordan (Album of the Week)Happy Man (Full Orbit radio Edit) – MEI“Quotations” – Water From Your EyesEating Up The Sky – WasuremonoShe's the One – OutlineMouthful of Glass – Macie StewartCome As You Are – NirvanaCome As You Are – Memorial (Luvva Cover feature)Chameleon – Anthony NaplesZheng ‘21 (Hibernation's Glitch Jazz remix) – Kaya Project, HibernationIn Too Deep – Geo JordanNobody Does It Like Me – Kaysha LouvainFlorida – Lost Horizons, KookieLouMy Courtesan – Robin GuthrieRambling Radio – Richard Townend and the Mighty BosscatsShadows of the Night – David GoundryFor You – Kahdja BonetFear in You – Thomas Murphy Young, Charles BerkeleyLet Go – Geo Jordan

Lots more innovative, melodic, fascinating new music in this week's show! Our ALBUM OF THE WEEK is the amazing debut album of Gal Musette. She is a musical prodigy who began writing piano based lyrical compositions and performing at open mics in her home city of San Clemente, CA at the age of 10. 'Backwards Lullaby' explores the pangs of hopeless romances and unrequited love, what it's like to move beyond idealized love into the acceptance of what is real and constant, as well as the cyclical nature of life and love in relationships."baroque pop songs inspired by lost love, yearning & hopelessness""breathtakingly beautiful layered vocals ... heartfelt & vibrant mix of indie pop & folk laced confessions"In our LUVVA COVER feature, we will be playing a cover of a gorgeous song by Big Thief. The cover is by 'bedroom pop sensation' Cavetown."The tenderness in the cover is on display from the jump. The vocals are doubled to give a bit of an Elliott Smith feel here as things roll out with a beautiful tone. The song takes on a bit of a new life without steering from the original. The guitar and vocals together drive home the softness in the cover. There's a harmonic note deliver on the song that takes hold as the vocals are the driving factor. It's a simple cover but it works with earnest and sincere intentions." closedcapWe are also incredibly proud to be raising awareness of the #v4velindre fundraising project in aid of the NHS Velindre Cancer Centre. The great Kevin McGrath has compiled a brilliant album of 50 songs by artists from the UK, Italy, USA and elsewhere and all proceeds will be donated to a great cause. A festival of new music again this week. With, perhaps, a bit of an electronic / nu jazz feel about it.This week, our ALBUM OF THE WEEK is 'somewhere' by Sun June. Sun June is an American indie pop band from Austin, Texas."Somewhere showcases a gentle maturation of Sun June's sound, a second record full of quiet revelation, eleven songs that bristle with love and longing. It finds a band at the height of their collective potency, able to transport the listener into a fascinating new landscape, one that lies somewhere between the town and the city, between the head and the heart, neither here nor there, but certainly somewhere."In our LUVVA COVER feature, we will be playing a cover of a Beatles standard by a bedroom pop duo, Memoryhouse. They are from Toronto and have released an EP of Beatles covers called 'Mania'."Mania is a lush and bold exploration of The Beatles that reflects the chaos and longing of the year - and our desperate need to cling to whatever joy we can find. It has that trademark Memoryhouse feeling of melancholy, taking that familiar Beatles classic and giving it a whole new spin, and meaning along the way."#newmusicyoujustdonthearanywhereelsePlaylist:Latter Days – Big Red Machine, Anaïs MitchellMeet Ya – Full Flower Moon BandHall of Mirrors – Let's Eat GrandmaPrecious Drop – SulcusBad with time – Sun June (Album of the Week)Typhoon – Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards12:12 – Jack Murphy, jena keatingRed Moon – Lola BNFJawbone – Ruby HauntPinetrees – Peter Sandberg, Henry GreenThis Boy – The BeatlesThis Boy – Memoryhouse (Luvva Cover feature)Found Footage Of The Second Lost Mission To Titan – Benny BraunLullaby for the Distance – 1010 EnsembleKaren O – Sun JuneWhole Heart – Jessie ReidThis Year (Piano) – Beach FossilsSummer in the City – LyraPace (Moses Boyd remix) – Nubya Garcia, Moses BoydAngel's Flight – BiosphereBad Girl – Sun JuneOn My Mind – Daz Cadwallander

More incredible creative, inspirational, innovative new music you just don't hear anywhere else!In our ALBUM OF THE WEEK feature, we play three selected tracks from a really interesting, newly-released album and invite the artist(s) to introduce it themselves. This week, it's 'Daystar' by Minneapolis's All Eyes. They are a duo (Alicia & Joe Christenson) and they describe their music as, "Dark Dreamgaze Indie Rock"."Seconds in I felt like I stepped into something surreal and something pervasive as my world seemed to slow down ...... the duo's intimate moving dreamscape has given me chills, literally. Darkly drawn, yes, but beautifully so." AmericanpancakeIn our LUVVA COVER feature, we will be playing the opening two minutes or so of a very well-loved song by Robert Palmer and then playing, in full, a cover version by Hanna H which offers a VERY different interpretation of the same song. In this case, the song has been used in the adverts of a major car manufacturer since 1986 (Robert Palmer's version) and this is the latest version that they have commissioned. Stacked full of exciting, innovative, creative New Music this week as per usual! Music from Iceland, USA, Sweden, Belgium (from a Dutch, Scottish and Indonesian background), Hungary, Korea, Nigeria (indirectly), Poland, New Zealand and the UK.Our ALBUM OF THE WEEK is 'Mundane' by Fiona Brown. She was born in the Netherlands to a Scottish father and Indonesian mother and now lives in Antwerp. A multi-instrumentalist, she's inspired by roots, rock and soul music but this latest album has a stark, industrial feel to it."‘Mundane' is anything but, although it takes a while to adjust to its brooding industrial beats. Across the albums 12 tracks, the grooves are harsh, aggressive and cold. Like slaps to the face or knocks to the knees – they bite and gnarl. Add to that, icy synths that hint at melodies without always explicitly giving them and you have an unusual album. It isn't atonal – it just hints at beauty or horror – often at the same time. What holds it all together is the voice of Fiona Brown." higherplainmusicWe are playing 3 tracks from this superb album and Fiona, herself, introduces it on our show. Our LUVVA COVER feature is a fascinating interpretation of one of the biggest hits for The Temptations - written for them by Smokey Robinson. Joy Oladokun's version caused a storm when it was included in the soundtrack of Grey's Anatomy earlier this year. It gives such depth to the lyric! Two comments on Youtube:"Real music doesn't need walls of sound. This is so moving and sincere.""I came here from Grey's (I got several of my fav songs from there) I've heard this song so many times but this version is just so soothing like it makes me cry and smile at the same time. Masses of new music in our playlist again this week!Album of the Week is 'Monthly Friend' by Wyldest. While Monthly Friend is a self-contained concept album about the joys, woes and confusion of femininity and womanhood, it's also a next step in the growth of a singer-songwriter who refuses to be pinned down by genre labels or traditional categorisation.Zoe Mead (aka Wyldest) wrote, mixed and produced the entire album herself and she introduces four tracks from the album herself on the show. This week's Luvva Cover feature is a transformation of a song by MGMT from 2007. The Youtube channel 'stories' has now recorded more than a hundred stripped down, acoustic covers of well known songs and has accumulated 100k Followers in just 12 months. Our ambition, every week, is to make you go Wow!, at least 3 times, as you listen to an artist or band who you've never heard of before. And we think we'll achieve it!Our ALBUM OF THE WEEK, this week, is the immaculate 'Lights On' by Mozez. He will be introducing it himself and we will play three or four tracks during the course of the show. This is the third solo album from Mozez who fronted Zero 7 and performed vocals on record and on tour with Nightmares On Wax!"once again, he delivers a warm and perfectly controlled vocal performance to support his beautifully crafted lyrics""How do you classify an artist who seamlessly blends experimental EDM, pop, R&B, soul and gospel? You don't. You simply sit back and enjoy the ride."Our Luvva Cover was released just 4 days ago and is a brilliant transformation by Lauren O'Connell of a very well-loved song by Echo & the Bunnymen. The After Eight Show goes out on 19 different radio stations in 5 countries and is followed by over 10,000 people on Twitter. We had a new feature on the show starting this week - our Album of the Week. Each week, we will be playing three tracks from an interesting, newly-released album and we will invite the artist(s) to introduce it themselves. The inaugural one was Are We Doing This? by Dead Anyway."A phenomenal mix of poetry, electronica and guitars. A heady brew of dark, glitchy, head-messing wonder."It was introduced by Kate Arnold who writes the lyrics and provides the vocals. It's an extraordinary album! And our Luvva Cover is pretty special too! Mark Kozelek, aka Sun Kil Moon and leader of Red House Painters, is another extraordinary songwriter. Missed my Heart is a very strong song with a lyric telling the story of a murder from the point of view of the protagonist. Phoebe Bridgers has done a cover version of this song which, if anything, heightens the emotions that you will feel when you listen to the song. Give it a listen!#newmusicyoujustdon'thearanywhereelse!Playlist:Love Nobody – Jenn Champion, OYSTER KIDSDifferent Kind Of Love – Adia VictoriaSofa Surfer – Beach RiotOutside the Lines – The ArdentsStretch Armstrong – Dead Anyway (Album of the Week)The Shadow Lands – Hugo Kant, Ian Urbinafall (A.G.
