Major championship winner, Mike Weir relives his last several PGA Tour wins including the 2003 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and going back-to-back at Riviera in the Nissan Open. The big one, of course, was his playoff victory at the 2003 Masters Tournament over Len Mattiace, becoming the first male Canadian major champion and the 2nd lefty to win a major (after Bob Charles at the 1963 Open Championship at Lytham.) He takes us back to his champion's dinner, sitting between Tom Watson and Byron Nelson, that made for a memorable evening. Mike Weir continues his story, "FORE the Good of the Game."
Tiger Woods is looking like he is going to play in the Masters, Matt Adams has all the latest and is joined by ESPN's Michael Eaves and 2003 Masters runner up Len Mattiace.
Austen SHOCKS YOUR MOCK, and Brent and Austen talk with former PGA Tour pro Len Mattiace about #PlayDay
Len was six when his father Louis encouraged him to take up golf. Len is left-handed, but he plays golf right- handed. Though he started early, it wasn't until high school that Len began to elevate his game, eventually becoming the #1 ranked player in Junior Golf. His skill and fortitude earned Len a scholarship to Wake Forest where he was a two time All- American and key member of the 1986 NCAA National Championship team. Website: https://www.lenmattiace.com/
Join hosts Rafael Kalamat and Michael Bleackley as they talk to PGA champion Len Earl Mattiace. He is an American professional golfer, formerly of the PGA Tour and now playing on the PGA Tour Champions. Mattiace was born in Mineola, New York. He attended Nease High School in Ponte Vedra, Florida. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1990 with a degree in Sociology. While at Wake Forest, he played on the team that won the NCAA Division I Golf Championship in 1986. He turned pro later in 1990. Mattiace first gained notability when he surged into contention in the final round of the 1998 Players Championship. Trailing by one shot going into the par-3 17th hole, he hit his tee shot into the water, his third shot into a bunker, and his fourth shot into the water. He ended up with a quintuple-bogey 8 on the hole and finished in a tie for fifth, four strokes behind the eventual winner Justin Leonard. Mattiace's career year was 2002, when he earned wins at the Nissan Open (his 220th PGA Tour start) and the FedEx St. Jude Classic. In 2003, he contended in the Masters Tournament by shooting a 65 in the final round which put him into a playoff with Mike Weir. On the first playoff hole, Mattiace found himself stymied by trees when his approach drifted offline. Weir needed only a bogey to secure the victory and Mattiace finished second, earning $648,000 in prize money. Shortly after the 2003 season, Mattiace's career was threatened by a skiing accident and torn ACLs in both knees. Mattiace was ranked as high as 24th in the Official World Golf Ranking, but was not fully exempt on the PGA Tour after 2005. He made his PGA Tour Champions debut in March 2018 at the Cologuard Classic. He currently resides in Jacksonville, Florida. If Golf really does make model gentlemen, Len is a shining example of that being true. It was both a privilege and an honour to be able to sit an speak for an hour with Len Mattiace. Len is an incredibly successful PGA tour Golfer winning 2 times, reaching top 30 in the world rankings and coming 1 play off hole away from that coveted green jacket. Len talks us through his childhood, which reveals a lot about what made him successful on Tour. We delve heavily into his career, wins, near misses and some epic stories from his time out on tour. Len is also extremely passionate about charitable work and set up The Len Mattiace Foundation some 20 years ago. The Len Mattiace Foundation is centered around a common theme in Northeast Florida: the well-being, growth, and safety of the kids in their community. Through the game of Golf and a Stop the Bullying Campaign the foundation is able to positively affect thousands of kids close to home. We then round off the conversation with some quick fire questions! Len, thank you for your generosity, work ethic and passion to give back to your community. There's so much we can all learn from him on this episode both on and off the course! Visit https://www.lenmattiace.com/foundation to learn more!
As Jim Nantz will soon say ... the green jacket is going north of the border, and we've got native Canadian Adam Stanley joining us to break it down. Little Mike Weir is about to win the Masters for all of Canada, but not without one helluva fight from Len Mattiace. (And apologies to Len, at times our accents pronounced is last name a bit funny!) Mattiace shoots one of the greatest what-if rounds in Masters history. Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh play left-handed and Phil Mickelson makes one of the greatest recoveries golf has ever seen. That and more in this episode of A Pod Unlike Any Other. Enjoy!
