Nick recounts his time spent in the Rhodesian Air Force during the "Bush War" there and the honor of representing his country in the 1976 Eisenhower Trophy. He relates the decision process to turn professional in 1977 and discusses those early days on the South African and European Tours. Finally, he fondly recalls his special relationship with his long-time caddie, Jeff "Squeeky" Medlin and growing up with his swing coach, David Leadbetter. Nick Price tells his early story, "FORE the Good of the Game."
The core of the show is this week surrounds Barry Forth, a guest we have been meaning to have on for some time. The General Manager of a fully public golf course, Copetown Woods located near Hamilton, Ontario, he has some some great insight on the golf industry. That includes the challenges of a pandemic, how they keep their business on track in a competitive environment, and how they make sure their business is welcoming for staff and customers alike. There is plenty to take from the conversation. In the Week That Was we talk LPGA feats, Tiger and Phil Mickelson in the news, great deeds by young golfers, the Players Championship, and why do some PGA club professionals seemingly make not playing golf a badge of honour. In the Mail Bag we talk turkey, literally, personal launch monitors, annoying things at the driving range, how not to screw up shots after a perfect drive, our saturation point for PGA TOUR events, and off-season practice. In the Tip of The Week, Scott shares some thoughts on how you can improve your golf swing, no matter your location or time of year. Everything about RainDance National, a new golf course in Northern Colorado, is BIG, except for the guy who helped design it and the odds that it won't hit. It's big news that there's a new golf course being built. According to the National Golf Foundation, there were only 18 new ones in 2019, and some of those were only nine holes. The number on the RainDance National scorecard, from the back tees, will be over 8,400 yards, which will make it one of the biggest and longest in the country. The 1,000-year-old arroyos that the course is built around are big. The mountains that surround the course are even bigger. The landing areas, greens and expectations for the finished product are also all big. And then there's Fred Funk, one of the littlest and shortest hitters in professional golf, who's the co-designer of RainDance National. Nothing is bigger than his smile as he walks the routing and talks about how much fun he has had getting the opportunity to break into the business of course design. Funk, who won the 2005 Players Championship, is quick to point out that at an elevation of 5,000-feet, with most holes playing downhill and with the ideal playing conditions being hard and fast, the length could be deceiving. In this episode of the Fire Pit, while sitting around a fire overlooking the arroyos, you'll hear from Funk, Harrison Minchew, Funk's co-designer who spent most of his career working for Arnold Palmer Design, and Martin Lind, the third-generation farmer who finally pulled the trigger on a project he's been sitting on for over a decade. Thank you for listening to the Success is a Choice podcast network. This week is the Open Championship at Royal St. George's Golf Club in England. It is the last major of the PGA season. It also marks the 18th anniversary of Ben Curtis winning the Open Championship at this same course. The open championship rotates courses each year and Royal St. George's has only hosted the Open Championship one time since that Curtis win back in 2003. When Ben Curtis hoisted the claret jug, it was the first time he had ever played in a major and it was his first-ever tournament at a links-style course. He also was a late add to the field and his wife barely made it over to England since she didn't have a passport. Anyway, this was an interesting episode that we did a couple of years ago but wanted to replay it since the Open Championship returns to the site of this 300-to-1 longshot Ben Curtis shocking the world. Lastly, I am biased when it comes to Ben Curtis because he is doing a lot of great things in our area for kids in need. I highly recommend checking out his website at bencurtisfoundation.org. Ben Curtis won the 2003 Open Championship at Royal St. George's as a rookie in only his 16th start on the PGA Tour. He became the first golfer in 90 years to win a major championship in his first try. He would go on to win a total of four PGA events. Curtis also was the runnerup at the 2012 PLAYERS Championship and a member of the 2008 Ryder Cup Championship Team. Prior to his professional career, he was formerly the world's number one ranked amateur after winning three Ohio Amateur titles, earning NCAA All-American honors three times at Kent State University, and reaching the semifinals of the 1999 of the prestigious U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach. He retired from professional golf in 2017. He now leads the Ben Curtis Golf Academy, as well as the Ben Curtis Family Foundation which seeks to alleviate childhood hunger in Northeast Ohio. In today's episode, we discuss: Winning The Open Championship as a rookie Getting married and playing a PGA event on the same day The mental approach to golf Starting a foundation to help alleviate child hunger … and so much more!!! Our guest today is Justin Thomas – one of the most recognizable and successful golfers on the PGA Tour. He grew up in Kentucky and played collegiate golf for the Alabama Crimson Tide, where the accolades started to roll in — and you'll notice, they haven't really stopped. Justin became one of Alabama's most decorated athletes of all time in just two years. He won a host of individual awards during his first two seasons before capping off his collegiate career by leading the Crimson Tide to their first ever National Championship. At just 28-years old, Justin's work ethic has driven him to achieve incredible milestones professionally as well. He has a Major Championship victory, a FedEx Cup Championship, a PLAYERS Championship and a PGA TOUR Player of the Year Award, in addition to being 1 of only 4 players in PGA Tour history with 14 victories before his 28th birthday, joining the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller and Tiger Woods. Let's go!
Hal Sutton (51:27) joins the show for the first time. He tells seemingly endless stories about the famous “be the right club today!” win against Tiger at The Players Championship in 2000, pairing Tiger and Phil together at the 2004 Ryder Cup, playing with Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman, giving Trent advice on breaking 100, and much more. Before Hal, we weigh in on the latest in Brooks vs Bryson, Rickie Fowler not qualifying for the U.S. Open, and Frankie vs Boston.
Tonight, we are talking about, MLB briefly, NFL, NBA playoffs, NHL playoffs, short Golf update on Players Championship, Emails, and of course Cowboys, and more...Special Thanks to:Fox Brothers Alarms - https://foxbrothersalarms.comFirst Baptist church of Phillipsburg NJ http://www.fbcpburg.org/
It's a challenge to condense the career of Davis Love III into a few short lines. The World Golf Hall of Fame member has been a force in the game for over thirty years. As an accident player in the 90's he was a staple on major championship leaderboards. He won the 1997 PGA Championship in fairytale fashion and added two Players Championship titles to go with it. His 21 total wins on the PGA Tour puts him in rare company especially with his latest coming at age 51. Love is a two time Ryder Cup captain and currently serves as the US President's Cup captain for the 2022 matches slated for his home state of North Carolina. His career in golf has been incredibly impressive and even with all of those resume highlights, he's not done yet. Today, much of Love's time is spent working on his golf design business. Alongside his brother Mark, Love has built a design company that is founded on the principles of golf's golden age. Pulling inspiration from the likes of Seth Raynor, C.B. McDonald, Donald Ross, and Allister MacKenzie, Love Golf Design has a long list of projects to their credit and no two courses seem to be alike. In today's competitive golf architecture market, Love Golf Design is garnering lots of attention for their thought provoking renovation work. Their latest effort in Richmond, Virginia is a renovation and reimagination of the municipally owned Belmont Golf Course. Love joins me on Mid-Am Crisis to discuss that effort and much more. During our discussion, Love and I dive into Phil Mickelson's recent win at the PGA Championship, his thoughts on the 2021 Ryder Cup matches(he's currently an assistant Captain for the team), and took a deep dive into his design career and the newly debuted Belmont Golf Course. We also took a detour into one of his great passions - cooking BBQ. Love was kind to give me quite a bit of time for our discussion and it was a real treat to talk some golf with him. His insights into Phil winning over 50, the U.S. chances at Whistling Straights, and what his favorite BBQ stops around the south are were all fun to hear. I particularly enjoyed his perspective on golf design and why projects like Belmont are likely to become par for the course in the future as there are less opportunities to build new courses. I'm excited to share this interview and thanks to the good folks at Belmont for helping make it happen. About the Belmont Golf Course project... Belmont was originally designed by A. W. Tillinghast and hosted the 1949 PGA Championship which was won by Sam Snead. In the decades to come the course fell on hard times and conditions suffered. Some land was lost to infrastructure projects and the character of some holes changed forever. Faced with many challenges, the local government came close to shuttering the course before deciding to partner with the region's First Tee program and Love Golf Design to give the property new life. Thanks to those efforts, Belmont now has a fully restored collection of 12 Tillinghast holes, a sprawling practice facility, large putting course and even a six hole short course inspired by the best works of Tillinghast. The course re-opened in May 2021 and positive reviews are already flowing in. To learn more about Belmont Golf Course and the vision for it's future, please visit https://www.playbelmontrva.org/ To learn more about Love Golf Design be sure to check out https://davislovegolfdesign.com/ Thanks as always for listening to Mid-Am Crisis. What is it with this Royal couple garbage? It's everywhere. Front page of everything I'm looking at. Who the hell cares? Isn't there something we could be doing productively? Enough already. I hate it. The Players Championship can't start soon enough. I'm recording it so I don't have to see any more of the Royal yahoos being interviewed by some other yahoo asking the same questions as every other yahoo. And then I'll watch re-runs of the Players Championship until it's safe to turn on my computer or TV again. I have some perspective on this in today's rant.

Soly sits down with Kevin Na and Marc Leishman to preview this week's Players Championship. First up, Kevin talks about his moment with Tiger Woods at the 2019 event, battling the yips while in contention at the 2012 Players, how he overcame that, how he sped up his pace of play, how he started converting top-10's into wins, walking in putts, and a lot more. Second up, Leish details a wild 2020 that saw some crazy highs and crazy lows. He chats about how he got his game back, what goes wrong when it goes wrong, and what it's like to tee it up in events when your best stuff isn't there. Thanks to both Kevin and Marc for the time.

Programming note: We first released this episode on Thursday, March 12, 2020. That evening, the Players Championship was canceled in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. So with the 2021 Players approaching, we thought we'd give this story another chance. In this installment of our audio documentary series, we detail how PGA Tour Commissioner Deane Beman and golf course architect Pete Dye turned an alligator-infested swamp in Ponte Vedra Beach into a new kind of tournament venue. We also tell the story of the pros' first encounter with TPC Sawgrass at the 1982 Players Championship. This episode features interviews with Deane Beman, Jerry Pate, Vernon Kelly, Tom Doak, Sean Martin, and Adam Schupak.
