#74: [Inside the Mind] Dr. Joseph Parent: Unconditional Confidence, Remaining on the Offensive, and How to Go Low with the PAR Method In this powerful and enlightening episode of The Scratch Golfer's Mindset Podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Joseph Parent, author of Zen Golf and one of the most respected minds in golf psychology.  Together, we break down the mental collapse Rory McIlroy experienced at Augusta, why players in the lead shift from offensive to defensive mindsets, and how to overcome the urge to “protect” a lead that doesn't actually exist. Dr. Parent unpacks the roots of time-traveling thoughts, teaches how to return to presence with the “Love the Way It Leaves” mindset, and shares his proven PAR method: Preparation, Action, and Response to Results.  In today's episode, you'll learn: Why shifting from offensive to defensive play derails your round How “protecting a lead” is a mental trap What real focus and commitment look like on a shot How to let go of the past (and future) and return to presence Why most players collapse in Amen Corner — and how to prevent it The PAR method to respond to good and bad shots alike How to build unconditional confidence regardless of current performance Whether you're a 20 handicap or chasing scratch, this episode will radically shift how you view confidence, pressure, and progress. Treat each one with the same intention. Offense wins in golf. Shifting to “protect” a score leads to tentative swings and poor decisions. Commitment is clarity. A vague shot plan leads to vague swings. Clear images = clear results. Most bad shots stem from mental interference, not swing flaws — especially under pressure. Return to presence by letting go. Your body is always here. It's your mind that time travels. “Love the way it leaves.” Focus on your process, not the outcome. Unconditional confidence means trusting your skills even when results aren't there yet. Key Quotes: “You're not holding the lead. You're just holding onto an idea that doesn't exist yet.” “Golfers say, ‘If I can just par in…' — that's when the mind shifts into protection mode and everything tightens.” “A vague image produces a vague swing. Clarity of image is clarity of action.” “If you're not present on 15, your body's already in the bar on 19.” “You never calm up. You calm down. So stop trying to be up-tight and start getting down-settled.” “Focus on loving the way it leaves. That's all you can control.” “When you're out of your own way, your true skill level shows up.” Time Stamps: 00:00: Rory McIlroy's Performance at the Masters 09:07: The Defensive Mindset in Golf 14:01: Maintaining an Offensive Mindset 19:00: Being Present in the Moment 23:09: Caveman Lessons: The Roots of Fear and Awareness 26:04: The PAR Approach: Preparation, Action, and Response 30:20: Focusing on Process Over Outcome 32:33: Understanding Unconditional Confidence 35:15: Cultivating Unconditional Confidence 38:41: Practicing Mindfulness Off the Course 42:30: Common Misconceptions About Mindfulness 44:32: The Billboard Message: Take Golf Seriously, Not Yourself 45:37: Patience and Humor in the Journey to Improvement

Andy begins by asking questions about Ryder Cup eligibility for the latest honorary Texan. Brendan reveals that Thursdays are now known as "Diet Friday" after sharing today's Masters Fact of the Day. Speaking of Masters facts, Andy then provides an early weather update for Augusta, making sure he gets out in front of this upcoming catnip. After a recap of PJ's night at a Mumford & Sons concert on Wednesday night, updates are provided on the Hero Indian Open and the Houston Open. DLF was featured on Design Disasters on Thursday morning after caddies wrote in to complain about the 17th hole, and Matt Jordan is in contention with his standard first-round 69. In Houston, Tosti finds himself in the early lead, making Andy wonder what would happen if Tosti found himself in the field at Augusta National. LIV Golf announced its own Creator Classic, with a similar group of creators playing alongside pros at LIV Miami. PGA Tour member Wes Bryan is playing with Dustin Johnson, which has Andy do some journalism to ask if he'll be suspended from the PGA Tour as a result of his participation. At long last, some Golf Advice emails are read before Brendan has a quick Flashback Friday segment about Vijay Singh and how international players adjusted to the Houston Open in the early 2000s.

(00:01) Indoor Golf Technology and Instruction This chapter welcomes listeners to a golf-centric discussion featuring top instructors Jeff Smith and James Hong. We explore the benefits of indoor golf facilities, particularly during winter, as well as advancements in golf technology. With simulators and launch monitors, practicing indoors has become increasingly accurate, allowing players to hone their skills regardless of the weather. The conversation also touches on the latest innovations, like the Foresight launch monitor that syncs with Bushnell rangefinders, offering real-time data to improve decision-making on the course. This technology could streamline the game by suggesting clubs and potentially speeding up play, underscoring the exciting intersection of golf and tech. (13:31) Improving Golf Alignment Perception This chapter focuses on the challenges of perception and alignment in golf, particularly for amateur players. We explore techniques for improving aim, such as using alignment sticks and creating a practice station to train the eye and mind. The discussion highlights the importance of understanding personal perception of straight lines and how it affects aiming on the course. By examining how different people perceive alignment, I demonstrate methods to help golfers correct their aim, such as placing clubs across the body to visualize alignment and using finger spacing to gauge accurate aiming points. This practical approach emphasizes consistent practice and adjusting techniques based on individual perception, ultimately helping players improve their accuracy and performance. (21:06) Donut Debate and Golf Instruction This chapter explores the intricacies of golf alignment and the challenges golfers face in maintaining proper aim. We share a detailed anecdote about a regular client who struggles with aligning his shots, illustrating how small adjustments and understanding peripheral vision can improve accuracy. We also touch on the humorous side of golfing practice, noting how sometimes, despite hitting beautiful shots, perception can skew a golfer's understanding of their performance. As the conversation shifts, we take a lighthearted detour discussing the ongoing debate between Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts, highlighting personal experiences and the regional preferences that can affect a brand's success. (24:53) Optimizing Golf Swing With Age This chapter focuses on the adjustments and mindset shifts necessary for aging golfers to maintain their game. We emphasize the importance of managing expectations, especially regarding distance loss as players age. Strategies to minimize distance loss include maintaining physical fitness without excessive gym routines and adjusting one's swing style. By exploring different swing styles, such as those of Tommy Fleetwood and Vijay Singh, we discuss finding a technique that suits an individual's natural movement. Additionally, we address the challenge of conflicting advice from instructors and tipsters, highlighting the need for golfers to focus on what aligns with their body's capabilities rather than blindly following trends or professional golfers' techniques. The importance of personalized instruction and avoiding one-size-fits-all tips is stressed, encouraging players to develop a game plan that works uniquely for them. (30:48) Indoor Golf Technology Advancements This chapter explores the humorous and often frustrating world of unsolicited golf advice, as we share anecdotes about how well-intentioned tips from fellow golfers can sometimes derail a round. We also touch on the importance of professional lessons and the stubbornness of some golfers who proudly avoid them. As we navigate through these stories, we introduce our guest, James Hong, and discuss the rise of indoor golf facilities as an alternative during harsh weather conditions. These venues, likened to bowling alleys, have benefitted from advancements in technology, offering improved golf mats that closely replicate grass conditions. Finally, we reminisce about an innovative mat suspended on magnets, showcased at a past PGA show, highlighting the evolution of golf practice tools. (43:52) Embracing Indoor Golf Technology and Instruction This chapter explores the transformation of indoor teaching environments with the integration of modern technology. We discuss how embracing these changes has shifted the perception of indoor spaces from being dark and claustrophobic to open and airy. A key example highlighted is Jeff's indoor studio in Indiana, which features a large space and high ceilings, showcasing how such environments can positively impact teaching and learning experiences. James and I express gratitude to Jeff for sharing his insights and experiences, emphasizing the importance of adapting to and appreciating these innovative spaces. We encourage our listeners to take note of these advancements in educational settings.

He has worked with major champions, many other top golf professionals, and amateurs at every level. He has the singular distinction of coaching both a man (Vijay Singh) and a woman (Cristie Kerr) to #1 in the World Golf Ranking. Golf Digest magazine honored Dr. Parent in their list of “Top Mental Game Experts” in the world. We got the chance in our time together to look at the power of PERSPECTIVE How a slight shift in perspective can have a BIG effect on your game Joe described the humbling experience recently of hosting mindfulness sessions for people actually living in the Ukraine and the way they are manging to handle their lives in the most horrendous of conditions. How much do we take for granted in our own lives? In what way does this cross over to our golf? The dramatic impact of self talk Changing the definition of a ‘good shot' Why the perception of what makes a ‘good day' can make us so unhappy What perspective do we have on poor shots? How do we view the opportunity to play? What about the golf course itself? Do we view the course as an invitation to experience the possibility of expressing our skills or do we see the course as being something of a ‘war zone' where are own sense of self is brought into question? How does the golf course want to RECEIVE your shots? The ‘don't know' mindset Be CURIOIUS instead of afraid The Zen of better putting How you can make EVERY putt Why it is so important to ‘begin with the end in mind' The ultimate ATTITUDE to bring to your putting ‘Hit it where the putter is pointing'Love the way the ball leaves the putter LEARNING from every putt A really tremendous conversation with a legendary performance coach. The Myths and Misconceptions around what club fitting can ACTUALLY do for you and your golf. We go in a slightly different direction on today's Brain Booster but still with the underlying idea of looking at all avenues to improve your game. We are joined on the show by Nick Hibbs from Tour X who is one of the best club fitting experts in the UK. I have known Nick for many years and he is one of the game's good people with a genuine care for his clients and students. He has a warmth of personality that is infectious. Nick has worked with some of the top players in the history of the game such as Vijay Singh, Tom Watson, Bernhard Langer and Nick Faldo Players who were renowned for their depth of knowledge with their own clubs. He served his apprenticeship over many years on the European Tour and his technical know how of all aspects of club fitting is literally second to none. So what benefit can club fitting have as a Brain Booster I have often felt from a mental game perspective if you KNOW your clubs are 100% right for you then it is a great assist in calming the mind. In the show we look into Tiger Woods opinion on the value of a club fitting and how he sees it worth at least a QUARTER of a shot each round. How NOT to fall into the trap of adjusting your game to your clubs. Your clubs should fit YOU and YOUR game. As we have said so many times can you find out EXACTLY what will make you tick as a unique individual What a club fitting can and can't do for you Why a club fit is not just for better players How much does the shaft play a part in the performance of your shots? What is the latest technology with club heads? What is the actual process of a club fit? How will you actually benefit? How to hit the ball out of the middle of the club more often Wedge fitting or Driver fitting which should you go for? What are some of the myths and misconceptions with club fitting? A really thought provoking session that differs from many previous guests but nevertheless a really valuable contribution to your quest to improve. Tim also shares some tips to help us improve our mental game. Ian Baker-Finch won the Open Championship in 1991 and is now one of the best Analysts in the game. You can hear Ian as part of the CBS broadcast team. In this segment, he shares his insights and concerns about the LIV Tour. We talk about his 3 Top 10 finishes and The Masters and what allowed him to play so well there. We hear about how he taught himself the game by reading Jack Nicklaus' book "Golf My Way" and then years later playing alongside Jack in a practice round at the 1985 Open Championship at Royal St. George's. We also go back to his first PGA Tour victory at Colonial in 1989 and his big win at the 1991 Open Championship that featured a 3rd round 64 that included nine 3s on his scorecard. He followed up with opening his final round with a front nine 29 that included 5 birdies in his first 7 holes, on his way to shooting 66. Paul Tesori is the caddie for Webb Simpson. Paul shares memories from his college golf days at the University of Florida and being a part of their National Champion and back-to-back SEC Championship teams in the mid-90s. We also hear about his relationship with Vijay Singh, how he and Webb started working together, and Paul's thoughts on the LIV Tour. Kip Henley caddies on Tour for William McGirt. In this segment, Kip tells us why he hopes the LIV Tour becomes successful and how underpaid Tour players are in relation to other athletes. We go back to 2009 when he was on the bag for Brian Gay when Brian won at Habour Town by 10 strokes. Kip also talks about the important role his wife plays in his career even when he's away on Tour plus details the good and the bad sides of life as a Tour caddie.

We love the internet. We love Bitcoin. But we also love the real world, and there's nothing better than hanging out with proper bitcoiners in meatspace. *WARNING* This one gets messy. Fozz arrived armed with beer and port, I may have chipped in with one of the good whiskies (I give the cheap stuff to the normies), and Brendo contributed nothing and stacked sats instead (not true, he now has his own beer shelf in my fridge!) The language gets colourful, and the slurs get worse as we go. You've been warned. Proceed at your own risk. A quick overview of what we covered: A ridiculous amount of name-drops. We were all guilty. I'll include some below, sorry if I missed you out. Fozz's move into farming, his long-term plans and how Bitcoin will get him there. Why those with addictive personalities love (and stick with) Bitcoin. Health, ethics and hope for the future. The joy of orange-pilling friends and family. This week Eddie and Andrew discuss the important questions in golf - how does the women's game get back on track? What will golf sounds like with no fans? And would you really want to fight Vijay Singh? We also hear from one of the best broadcasters in the business in John Murray, who shares memories of Opens and Ryder Cups. We then try and ignore Eddie's formative trip to America as a 16 year-old and instead focus our attention on Jean-Luc Picard and Jose Luis Chilavert.

As Jim Nantz will soon say ... the green jacket is going north of the border, and we've got native Canadian Adam Stanley joining us to break it down. Little Mike Weir is about to win the Masters for all of Canada, but not without one helluva fight from Len Mattiace. (And apologies to Len, at times our accents pronounced is last name a bit funny!) Mattiace shoots one of the greatest what-if rounds in Masters history. Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh play left-handed and Phil Mickelson makes one of the greatest recoveries golf has ever seen. That and more in this episode of A Pod Unlike Any Other. Enjoy!
