Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley slipped into the field in the 50th place after Tom Kim melted down at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis a week ago and took full advantage at Castle Pines by winning the BMW Championship and vaulting himself into 4th place in the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup standings with one week to play. The Break80 Podcast was in Colorado at Castle Pines and we will give you some insights to what we saw and heard on the ground this week, including our time inside the ropes with Peyton Manning and Wyndham Clark. The President's Cup automatic qualifiers are set for the United States and International teams for next month's event in Montreal. We will talk about who we think would be great captain's picks and who we don't like. Lydia Ko stayed on a heater by winning the AIG Women's Open in miserable conditions at the Old Course this week. Ko emerged from a packed leaderboard that included multiple former number 1 players to win her first Open Championship and add to her hall of fame resume. Andy and Brendan are back on this Wednesday episode to recap the fallout from Matt Kuchar's solo Monday finish at the Wyndham Championship, among other things. They start with Andy's initial take on the whole situation on Sunday before getting into the range session, TIO drop, and three shots of Monday morning. Kevin Prise gets a shoutout for his outstanding Monday coverage from Greensboro before Andy and Brendan break down Kuchar's post-round comments. The conversation then moves to the FedEx Cup Playoffs and this week's FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis, which will mark the start of our free-to-play FedEx Cup pool! Andy is watching out for some big names that are in danger of missing out on the Top 50 and next year's Signature Events, including a certain Guy and last year's FedEx Cup champ. The two take a look at the current FedEx Cup standings, which aren't easy to figure out, and try to make sense of how some players have accumulated so many points. Brendan then lays out the Schedule of the Week, hitting on the U.S. Amateur in Hazeltine, a possible American Ryder Cup scout team at the Czech Masters, and of course, LIV Greenbrier. The episode wraps with some news and notes, such as Sanderson Farms no longer sponsoring the Jackson, MS event on the fall swing.

In Part 1 of Episode 40, I'm joined by our resident Director of Instruction, Tom Patri, and 21-time Tour winner, John Cook. Tom and I dive into the Player of the Year debate—Scottie or Xander? We discuss whether two majors outweigh one major, The Players Championship, and six wins. We also touch on Keegan Bradley's appointment as Ryder Cup Captain, the significance of Olympic golf, and Tom's recent trip to Sea Island. John Cook, who has had a remarkable career both as an amateur—winning the 1978 US Amateur and finishing runner-up to Mark O'Meara in '79—and as a professional player and broadcaster, joins the conversation. He shares his thoughts on the topics from the first segment, especially the focus on money versus the traditional values of the Tour. John also gives his opinion on who should be named Player of the Year. We revisit his incredible victory at the 1996 FedEx St. Jude Classic, where he set a 54-hole record on the Tour, and his memories of the 1994 US Open at Oakmont. Additionally, we talk about John's Western Pennsylvania roots through his mother, witnessing Arnold Palmer's final US Open round, and the Cook family's anniversary tradition at Dom & Dom.

My aunt Jody was a sign maker when I was a child. One of her biggest clients was the FedEx St. Jude Classic, where once a year she had the honor of participating in a truly iconic piece of signage. Fans will know that at “our” tournament, in place of the traditional “quiet please” signs, Southwind opts for a more culturally appropriate, “hush y'all.” It's a local point of privilege that I hope we never retire. Yet, as bespoke as our vanity signs may be, the message is still the same as all the others: "pay attention, something big is near." I would imagine that if you compared the real estate dedicated to signs pointing travelers to Disney World to the square inches the Magical Place actually covers, there would be no contest. I'd also wager no one actually in Disney has ever spent time reminiscing about the signs that got them there. Why is it then that we are so often a people so obsessed with signs and wonders? Why did I as a younger man long with Habakkuk to see signs and wonders renewed in my own day?Fourteen miracles are recorded in the Book of Acts, and only one of them is directly called a sign. In this week's text, we see Peter and John heal a crippled man at the Temple gate called Beautiful. But for all the hype surrounding these supernatural moments, miracle-worker Peter himself is urging us not to miss what's being signified when a sign appears. Every part of this story is screaming at us to look past itself to the Bigger, More Beautiful Gate that is so, so near. So, while the church is gathered inside this Sunday to celebrate the Word and Table, I trust you won't be caught huddling around the St. Patrick sign out front!

In this episode, I'm joined by Top Instructor Tom Patri, 1989 Open Champion Mark Calcavecchia, & Jon Goin, Owner of Timber Truss Golf Course in Olive Branch, Mississippi. TP shares his disappointment about LIV Golf and the impact it's having on the game. As we wait to hear the details about the players-only meeting Tiger Woods earlier in the day, we speculate on what he might have been sharing. We also talk about whether it's time for the PGA Tour to at least reimburse players for their expense money if they don't make the cut. Since they seem to have more cash than they've let on, should players get reimbursed for their travel, lodging, food, and caddie expenses if they don't make the cut? Mark Calcavecchia shares his experiences from playing in his final Open Championship a few weeks ago. We hear what it was like to stand on the Swilken Bridge and make that final wave to the fans that we've seen so many legendary players make. Mark also shares his thoughts on LIV Golf and what he might have said had Greg Norman presented him with this opportunity during his prime. Jon Goin updates us on all the great things going on at his course Timber Truss. Jon always puts the emphasis on how to create fun experiences first and then providing a great golf course to play. Cam Smith was the talk of the golf world all week long when he refused to confirm or deny whether or not he was joining the LIV Golf Series. Smith was also hit with a penalty Sunday at the St. Jude Classic for a violation that came on Saturday. The LIV Golf Series also had their class action lawsuit against the PGA Tour rejected as a judge ruled the LIV players were fairly compensated. The Men's US Amateur takes place this week after a dominating performance by Saki Baba in the US Women's Amateur. The BMW Championship is ready for the second round of the FedEx Cup playoffs that have now seen the field shrunk down to 70 players. Lastly, the show wraps up the 'Birdie and Bogey of the Week'.

He is an American professional golfer, formerly of the PGA Tour and now playing on the PGA Tour Champions. Mattiace was born in Mineola, New York. He attended Nease High School in Ponte Vedra, Florida. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1990 with a degree in Sociology. While at Wake Forest, he played on the team that won the NCAA Division I Golf Championship in 1986. He turned pro later in 1990. Mattiace first gained notability when he surged into contention in the final round of the 1998 Players Championship. Trailing by one shot going into the par-3 17th hole, he hit his tee shot into the water, his third shot into a bunker, and his fourth shot into the water. He ended up with a quintuple-bogey 8 on the hole and finished in a tie for fifth, four strokes behind the eventual winner Justin Leonard. Mattiace's career year was 2002, when he earned wins at the Nissan Open (his 220th PGA Tour start) and the FedEx St. Jude Classic. In 2003, he contended in the Masters Tournament by shooting a 65 in the final round which put him into a playoff with Mike Weir. On the first playoff hole, Mattiace found himself stymied by trees when his approach drifted offline. Weir needed only a bogey to secure the victory and Mattiace finished second, earning $648,000 in prize money. Shortly after the 2003 season, Mattiace's career was threatened by a skiing accident and torn ACLs in both knees. Mattiace was ranked as high as 24th in the Official World Golf Ranking, but was not fully exempt on the PGA Tour after 2005. He made his PGA Tour Champions debut in March 2018 at the Cologuard Classic. He currently resides in Jacksonville, Florida. Mattiace is naturally left-handed but plays right-handed. Todd says that he has not heard any negative comments about Chambers Bay. They may not love it but don't hate it. But Todd says you have to have a positive frame of mind. Rory said that this is a pure links golf course and Todd feels that the European golfers have an advantage with their knowledge of keeping the ball low.  Phil Mickelson has a really good shot to win in Todd's mind, because the course is such an unknown and you have to be creative player and that fits Phil's game. Phil loves a thinking man golf's course. Jeff asks Todd about PGA Executive Director of USGA Mike Davis' request to have players familiarize themselves with the course prior to the tournament. This is a unique course and you have to learn the nuances of the course. The practice rounds have been taking a long time. A lot of information gathering.  Todd says that it is hard to predict a favorite or winner here. Rory hasn't played well lately but he has taken some time off and reboot and Todd likes his chances as well as Jordan Spieth's. The winner of the FedEx St. Jude Classic was Fabian Gomez his first on the PGA Tour. Jeff has a story on PGA Tour.com with a first look at the U.S. Open and Holly mentions that if you want to see some great Flyovers of the front 9 holes at Chambers Bay. Mike Purkey, Global Golf Post, calls in from Chambers Bay, and talks about the weather and the course. Says the players don't have any idea of what to do or expect because they don't know how Mike Davis will set up the course that has only been in existence for about 7 years. The only time the course will look green is first thing in the morning then it will turn tan and yellow. Mike says that it already looks like the green has been rubbed off the practice green. Holly asks Mike about Tiger's chances given his play of late. "Anybody's guess how he will do?" Mike likes Rory's chances and also thinks Rickie Fowler will do well at Chambers Bay. But he says that it may be one of the weakest U.S. Open field that Mike Purkey has seen in many, many years. Liesel Niehaus and Mike Quinn call in from South Africa to talk with Holly about their product, Swingclick, which is the perfect timing and tempo swing trainer that you can actually wear on the course. The Swingclick gives audible clicks on your swing at the three key points of your swing. Their product was one of the top products at the 25th Anniversary ING Spring Conference held at Mission Inn at Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla. Gary Gilchrist who has his academy there had a chance to test the Swingclick along with some of his other teachers. Gilchrist thinks that the Swingclick is one of the best training aids he has ever used. Holly and Jeff talk wrap up another hour of intelligent golf talk discussing the other professional tours. The KPMG Women's PGA Championship won by Inbee Park. It's a three-peat at the KPMG for Park, but the first win as the newly created "PGA" Women's Championship. Champions Tour Bernhard Langer won the Constellation Sr Players Championship by six strokes after taking an 8-shot lead into the final round. Colin Montgomerie had to be checked out for chest pains on Saturday night and everything checked out at the hospital. He was able to play Sunday and finished third. Fox Sports debuts its golf coverage with the U.S. Open. Fox is using drones for overhead coverage and will be in prime time since it is on the west coast. Jeff Shain picks two to win at U.S. Open, Jordan Spieth or Phil Mickelson and Holly picks Phil too.

Now the course resembles the original design by Donald Ross. From what Bob has heard, the players like the course and know that it is tough. The rough might resemble a barren wasteland and the fairways might be a little brown.  Holly talks to Bob about Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson's chances and how their games suit this course. The two also talk about some of the European players and how their game fits this course? Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy,  Jason Day, Sergio Garcia, etc. Bob also talks about the fact that we just might see a person at the top of the leader board that we normally don't see. Players will miss a lot of the greens, more than normal, and they will need to get up and down a lot more than typical in a tournament.  Jeff Rude, Senior Writer for Golfweek, calls in from Pinehurst and talks to Holly about the players and how much they are thinking or about their game with the redesign and the fact that this is the second longest U.S. Open golf course. Jeff also mentions that there won't be many birdie opportunities at Pinehurst this week and that it will take a creative shot maker as well as a great short game player to win. There's a lot of chance involved on this course, more than most and that is why it is hard to pick a winner. Jeff brings up the fact that Payne Stewart and Michael Campbell hit a total of 41 fairways in four days that they played and went on to win the U.S. Open. Jeff feels Sergio Garcia has a good chance to win. Mike Kern, Philadelphia Daily News, joins the show and talks to Holly and Rich about Rory McIlroy and his approach to golf lately without his former fiancee. Mike also talks about the conditions of the course and the weather. Pinehurst is all about the greens and playing them, being able to get up and down. His picks are Furyk, Sergio and Brendon Todd.  Scott McPherson, President of Antigua, calls into the show and talks to Holly and Rich about gifts for Father's Day and apparel. Scott, in the business for 35 years, talks with Holly about how apparel has changed over the years. Synthetics have dominated for the past decade or so, but Antigua is introducing some cotton blends this year. LPGA Stacy Lewis who recently won the Shoprite LPGA Classic is part of Team Antigua.

Holly gives a shout out to Inbee Park who won the Wegman's LPGA Championship defeating Catriona Matthew on the third hole of a sudden death playoff. It was Park's seventh career victory and third major championship title. Harry English posted his first win of his PGA Tour victory at the FedEx St. Jude Classic holding off a strong finish by Phil Mickleson and Scott Stallings as the Tour sets up for the U.S. Open. Todd Lewis, the Golf Channel, calls in from Merion to talk about his interview with Lee Westwood as well as the weather and the shape of the golf course after all the rain. Close to 6 inches of rain has fallen on the course in less than a week. Todd also talks about the expectations of low numbers on the score at Merion. Holly and Todd talk about Phil Mickelson's whirlwind trip back and forth to the West Coast. Wednesday Phil flew out to attend his daughter's 8th grade graduation and then is supposed to arrive in the Philadelphia area around 4:15 in the morning and tee off a few hours later for his first round of the 113th U.S. Open. Todd is not sure if Phil is giving himself the best opportunity to win the major he so desperately wants. Todd and Holly also discuss the focused mindset of Webb Simpson and the chances of Pennsylvania native Jim Furyk. Todd feels that Rory McIlroy is not in the right spot with his game to win this major. Todd feels that Rory's switch of 14 clubs in his bag when he signed with Nike. Todd feels that it takes any player a while to adjust to any equipment changes they make and feels that it could take Rory until the final major of the season before he is completely dialed in with his new clubs. Philadelphia Daily News' Mike Kern, calls in from the press area in Merion to talk about the weather on the eve of the U.S. Open. Mike has written a series of article about Merion hosting the U.S. Open. "The thing about Merion is that the rough is always tough and needs to be that way since the course is short."  Mike said that the rough is akin to rough on the Tour about 10-15 years ago. Tony Leodora, Golfstyles Magazine and host of Golf Talk Live, calls in to wrap up the show. Tony and Holly talk about Ben Hogan's famed 1-ron shot at Merion. Tony said that he favors the older players to do well at Merion because of their patience and experience. Those two elements are really the key to winning the 113th U.S. Open.
