What if your inconsistency on the golf course wasn't about mechanics—but about how your brain is wired to learn, handle stress, and perform under pressure? In this episode of The Scratch Golfer's Mindset Podcast, I sit down with John Weir, creator of Mental Golf Type, to explore how personality wiring, hypnosis, and mental fitness shape your golf performance and your life. John breaks down why self-image is the foundation of confidence, how stress changes your swing before mechanics ever do, and why “being you” is the ultimate competitive advantage. In this episode, you'll learn: What hypnosis really is (and why it's a natural state of mind). The role of brainwaves in learning, confidence, and performance. How self-image is formed—and how to reshape it for success. Why celebrating positive shots accelerates growth. The difference between mental game strategies and mindset training. How your personality type influences stress, learning, and consistency. Why “being you” is the fastest path to your zone state. Whether you're trying to break 90, win your club championship, or gain an edge in business, John's insights will help you understand yourself at a deeper level—and show you how to align with your strengths for lasting success. Instagram: @thegolfhypnotherapist Twitter: @parsoverbogeys Key Takeaways: Hypnosis is a natural brainwave state that improves learning and receptivity. Self-image, formed in childhood, drives confidence, habits, and athletic identity. Celebrating positive shots (with emotion) hardwires them into memory. Stress and cortisol—not swing flaws—often cause inconsistency. Personality type influences how you process information and respond under pressure. Mental fitness is like physical fitness—it requires daily training. True performance comes from being yourself, not mimicking the pros. Key Quotes: “Hypnosis is simply a natural state of mind—it's how we learn best.” “Your subconscious doesn't care if it's positive or negative—it just supports your self-image.” “Every good shot deserves a fist pump. Celebrate the positive to wire it in.” “Most inconsistency in golf isn't mechanical—it's stress shutting down the motor cortex.” “Your personality type is your wiring. Once you know it, performance becomes simpler.” “Mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness—you need both daily.” “The zone isn't about being Tiger or Phil—it's about being yourself.” Time Stamps: 00:00: Understanding Hypnosis and Brain Waves 02:44: The Importance of Receptive States 05:42: Building Self-Image and Overcoming Limiting Beliefs 08:29: Emotional Anchoring and Positive Reinforcement 11:30: Mental Fitness: A New Approach to Hypnosis 14:30: The Role of Personality in Performance 17:21: Stress Management and Performance Consistency 20:17: Understanding Learning Styles and Personality Types 23:13: The Impact of Personality on Relationships 26:14: Simplifying the Path to Improvement 29:08: The Power of Self-Acceptance 32:13: The Importance of Slowing Down 35:00: Final Thoughts and Key Takeaways

(00:02) Beauty of Golf Courses and Handicapping This chapter kicks off with a conversation about the beautiful September weather in Flagstaff and the scenic views golf courses offer, emphasizing the often-overlooked beauty of the sport's locations. We touch on the stunning golf courses across the United States and the Caribbean, including a nod to Lake Tahoe's splendor. Shifting gears, we discuss the challenges of betting on the Ryder Cup, highlighting the unpredictability of golf, especially in emotionally charged international competitions. Comparisons are made to betting on intense sports rivalries like Indiana vs. Purdue basketball or iconic football matchups such as the Iron Bowl, where unexpected outcomes make handicapping difficult. Despite the complexities, we note that NFL football tends to be more predictable. (17:00) Defining Pitch and Chip Shots This chapter focuses on the complexities of golf terminology and how language can often lead to confusion, particularly when it comes to understanding the difference between pitching and chipping. We explore the nuances of these terms, emphasizing that a pitch is when the ball spends more time in the air than on the ground, typically requiring a higher lofted club like a sand or lob wedge. Conversely, a chip is characterized by a shorter flight and longer roll, often executed with a club like a nine iron. We also discuss how different clubs and motions can produce varied results, highlighting the importance of clear definitions in golf to prevent misunderstandings. Additionally, we touch on the common misconceptions about ball positioning during short shots and the flexibility in using various clubs for similar types of shots, illustrating how personal interpretation of terms like "chip" can impact a player's approach. (26:15) Clearing Up Golf Language Confusion This chapter explores the nuances and confusion surrounding golf terminology, particularly focusing on the terms "chip" and "pitch." We break down the definitions of these terms based on the shot and the movement, emphasizing that a pitch typically involves a ball that flies farther in the air than it rolls, while a chip has more ground time than air time. We also discuss how these terms can be misleading when players use different clubs, and how jargon often complicates communication for beginners. By comparing golf jargon to a foreign language, we highlight the importance of clear communication in coaching. Our philosophy emphasizes using straightforward language to enhance understanding and improve performance, advocating for a teaching approach that eliminates confusion and makes golf accessible to everyone. Ryan Fox has had an excellent run this year. He's back in New Zealand off the back of a season that includes two PGA Tour wins and a Guinness World Record. The end of the year also brings with it the return of the increasingly popular ‘Chasing the Fox' event, which is now into his fourth year. Despite his major success this year, not much has changed in regards to Fox's mentality. “I've always believed my golf was good enough to beat the best players in the world,” he told Mike Hosking. “Especially in that Canadian Open, I did beat a decent chunk of them that week, and you know, you've always got that in the back of your mind that, yeah, I've done it once, I know I can do it if I'm in that situation again.” “It's easier once you know you've done it.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is part one of a two-part TGJ Podcast series that explores the simmering animosity and contrasting philosophies shaping the road to the 2025 Ryder Cup. The series is voiced by Chandler Withington, former head professional at Hazeltine National and a consultant to the winning American side in 2016.–Until the mid-1980s, the Ryder Cup was little more than a friendly exhibition dominated by American stars. But when Seve Ballesteros and Tony Jacklin rallied Europe at The Belfry in 1985, everything changed. Part one tells the story of how polite applause gave way to jeers, tense matches spilled into parking lots and a nearly forgotten event transformed into golf's fiercest rivalry. The Golfer's Journal Podcast is presented by Titleist. The Golfer's Journal is made possible thanks to our members. Europe leaned into culture, continuity and connection, while the U.S. searched for formulas, fixes and new leadership. Part two examines how those contrasting philosophies shape each side, and how they now collide on the eve of Bethpage in 2025.The Golfer's Journal Podcast is presented by Titleist. The Golfer's Journal is made possible thanks to our members.
