Anyone who is in education knows the challenge that exists when we are trying to deliver content that connects with students. It can be hard to remember that the material that exists us might not be that exciting for the students. Although, I do find it hard to imagine that sociological theory isn't fascinating for everyone. At the same time, there is plenty of academic and scholarly material that I find completely indecipherable. When you read this material, you can see how it is confusing, lengthy, and perhaps even boring. Academics write for other academics, and when dealing with students who are not academic, the question becomes how do you get them excited, interested, and keep their engagement. The answer in many ways is pretty simple. As with any population, you have to speak their language. Or if not be fluent in their language, at least communicate in a way that they understand. In other words, you have to be learner-centric in your approach.Today's guests on Experience by Design have a strategy that might just help in this area. Emily Ritter knows the challenge of connecting with students. As a PhD in political science that explores human rights, domestic conflicts, and international relations, her work is relevant to the major issues of our time. But even that can get lost on students who can't wade through text books and journal articles. And imagine that compounded when trying to share complex ideas with policy makers and the broader public. To solve this problem, her and her graphic artist husband Darick combined their super powers and started Sequential Potential, a company that takes educational content and turns it into comic books and graphic novels. The results are a stunning depiction and portrayal of academic concepts and content in a way that is accessible to readers of all ages. Emily is joined by doctoral candidate in history Travis Hill, who also is a comic book creator and Sequential Potential employee. Together, we explore the challenge of creating academic content that connects with audiences. Their mission is to help all people understand the processes and evidence of rigorous research and connect those findings to their own lives. In an era of “did my research,” we definitely need more voices that can bring rigorous research into the public sphere in an accessible way. And Sequential Potential shows us one way of doing it.It was a fascinating and frankly inspirational talk about how to bring academic material to the mainstream through the universal language of comics.

---------------- Today's Episode:
This Holiday seasons special is the 8 Crazy Nights of Rye. We are kicking off this special with one of my personal favorites, Old Forester Barrel Strength Rye. Travis Hill and Brent Colangelo walk through this rye expression.
Music—and guitar—are therapeutic. The songs we write and riffs we play help reduce the pain, alleviate the stress, and produce some positivity in our lives. Microwave's singer/guitarist/lyricist Nathan Hardy has been using the studio and stage as his leather couch for nearly 10 years. Stovall, in 2014, saw him question his Mormon missionary upbringing. Two years later, Much Love focused on realities versus the romance of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. And 2019's Death Is a Warm Blanket is a dark, heavier, raging deep dive into his nihilistic thoughts. All three albums are honest, coarse evaluations of the pushing and pulling in Hardy's head and heart. Musically, the band has matured alongside Hardy's contemplative subject matter. Stovall and Much Love harness the teeter-totter dynamics mastered by Nirvana and also felt in Microwave's post-hardcore contemporaries like early Citizen and Turnover. While their loudest, most aggressive tendencies were unleashed in Death Is a Warm Blanket, Microwave's melodies and hooks can still be sticky and sweet as honey. Finally able to tour in support of that album, Microwave packed Nashville's Mercy Lounge on October 15. Just after soundcheck, Hardy and guitarist Travis Hill introduced PG to their favorite battle axes, walked us through their Odd Couple pedalboards, and Hill explained how an outdated laptop and trial version of Logic Pro provides a universal "poor man's Kemper" for guitars and bass. Travis is a real estate investor, an engineer, a father, and a very inspirational man. He endured years of battling cancer, but he didn't let that define his future! In this episode, you'll learn: · After he graduated from college, he became interested in real estate and wanted to get into the industry. · Travis experienced a fall in 2011; he lost it all and had to start over. · Be comfortable understanding and learning more about the finance world. · He suffered from stage three colon cancer, which made him realize the importance of freedom of time. · What are the steps or deals he is doing now to rebuild his portfolio? · Why you should consider investing in a turnkey property in real estate. · And much more! ~ About Travis Hill: Serving as a member of the Marine Corps for the past seventeen years continues to provide me with numerous opportunities to plan, coordinate, and execute all types of small unit working groups, engineering project management, and large-scale operations with personnel numbering in the hundreds. I enjoy and thrive operating in austere and fast-paced environments, whether maintenance or operation dependent. As an out-of-state real estate investor, I enjoy being a part of a team.
