In Episode 170, we have a frank discussion with Dr. Dwayne Jackson about the ins-and-outs of testosterone deficiencies and the need for individuals to seek out supplemental testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). It is more and more common to hear about males seeking out TRT for lifestyle and aesthetic reasons. Dr. Jackson provides an overview of all of the possible causes of low testosterone, as well as possible reasons for these deficiencies. For those that are willing to examine their lifestyle choices and make changes, improvements in testosterone levels can be achieved. But, in some cases, testosterone therapy may be a reasonable option when all of the conventional options have been exhausted. Dr. Dwayne N. It was time to bring back Charlie Weingroff for Episode 169 to talk about some serious stuff. Don and Derek reflect on the concept of incorporating running workouts as part of an overall aerobic training and conditioning program to improve overall body composition, health and wellness. It is no surprise that obesity numbers are continuing to increase in the western world and individuals are struggling to incorporate regular exercise into their schedules, while also improving overall nutritional habits. While running has always been considered a relatively simple way to add exercise to an individual's routine, it has never been considered an easy task. Determination, patience and a bit of grit may be required. Understanding how much, how hard and how frequently is always the most difficult part when starting a running program. Ideally, individuals can incorporate a combination of methods including steady state runs and interval training to provide a combination of variety and varied intensity, improving overall cardiovascular fitness, as well as general strength and power. Finding a routine that works for the individual is the most important step you can take in this journey. Episode 147 of the podcast was recorded with a group of coaching professionals attending a coaching leadership event at Vigor Ground Fitness & Performance in Renton, Washington. The group included Luka Hocevar, Kelsey Heenan, Dennis Heenan, Andrew Coates and our very own Don Saladino. The focus of the discussion was on nurturing the business side of the fitness industry and connecting with potential followers and clients. Each contributor has their own individual method of connecting with their audience and offer his or her thoughts on the best ways to create engagement and long term relationships that move their business forward. Another commonality is the ability to reach out to others for help, particularly in areas where a known deficiency may exist. Identifying both the constraints and opportunities facing a business is an essential step for developing an overall strategic plan and following through on the implementation side. We hope this discussion helps to motivate and guide others to making enhancements to their business. In Episode 146, Don and Derek have a serious talk about how their training has evolved as they have aged, particularly as it relates to weightlifting and resistance training. Younger athletes and individuals are able to lift heavy weight more frequently for many reasons. Not only do they tend to have more time available to dedicate to exercise, they also have more supple and resilient bodies that can handle just about any training load and intensity. As you age, you find that you have to be more careful about both exercise selection, but also how much and how often you place a load on your body. While many of us have been brought up in a culture of lifting free weights with barbells and dumbbells, there are good reasons for shifting your exercise selection to alternative methods of training muscle and building hypertrophy. We discuss use of weight machines, banded exercises, plyometrics, throws and explosive running activities. Many of these alternative methods of training can provide the same benefits without the same wear-and-tear on the body as traditional weightlifting. Understanding how to choose the right exercises for the right time of your life can have a beneficial effect on your overall health and wellness in later life. In Episode 144, Don and Derek begin their visit by discussing the recent medical incident that occurred in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills player, Damar Hamlin. Hamlin went into cardiac arrest immediately after making a tackle and had to be resuscitated by medical staff using CPR and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Fortunately, Hamlin has made a fabulous recovery from the event and is gradually returning to normal life. However, it does lead into a greater discussion of the health and welfare of professional athletes, who are being paid to provide a service to an organization. Should the owners of professional sports teams monitor the activities of paid athletes on an ongoing basis to not only ensure that performance is maintained, but also the health and safety of athletes is maximized? If an owner is paying over $100 million for a player's contract, does that give them a right to restrict harmful activities away from the training facility and competition arena, as well as promote positive choices for that athlete? These are all pertinent questions in this age of high-speed, high risk and high stakes pro sport. The D&D Fitness Radio podcast is available at the following locations for downloadable audio, including: iTunes – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/d-d-fitness-radio-podcast/id1331724217 iHeart Radio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/dd-fitness-radio-28797988/ Spreaker.com – https://www.spreaker.com/show/d-and-d-fitness-radios-show Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/5Py2SSPA4mntNwYRm0Opri You can reach both Don and Derek at the following locations: Don Saladino: http://www.DonSaladino.comTwitter and Instagram - @DonSaladinoYouTube - http://www.youtube.com/donsaladino Derek M.
