Jeff Marsh has been en fuego for the entirety of 2023 as I've seen it - but with all great stories, there's a lot more to it. Publishing his first periodic photo journal, "Golf is Art", it was a treat to hear stories that will appear in the book firsthand. Jeff has an unusually deep understanding of the game from a photographers lens having caddied on the PGA TOUR for Ryan Moore, running the caddie program at Chambers Bay, and leading the creative branding for TRUE Linkswear. He has been commissioned by Golf Digest, USGA, Bandon Dunes, Sand Valley, Dream Golf Resorts, Streamsong, Golfers Journal, Linksoul, Vincero Watches, Seattle Seahawks, Chambers Bay, Golf Magazine, 8am Golf, Rams Hill, Pebble Beach and many more. As for how we approached the conversation... I wanted to know his thoughts on the ever-changing golf landscape in professional golf, recreational golf, and social media - AKA, how you and I as fans and lovers of the game view new developments in our sport. Thanks for the support as always!Cheers,- The Tie GuysCheck out Jeff's Website & Pre-Order "Golf is Art"https://www.jeffmarsh.com/Jeff's Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/jeffkmarsh/?hl=enWebsite:https://www.thetiepodcast.comInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/thetiepodcast/?hl=enTwitter:https://mobile.twitter.com/thetiepodcastGoodWalk Coffee:https://goodwalkcoffee.comCODE: thetie for 20% offBDraddy:bdraddy.comCODE: thetie25 for 25% off

Casey Bannon joins us from his home state of Florida this week! Casey has played an integral role at The Golfers Journal as Assistant Editor, but has a hand in all aspects of the business. Family life, his early "tie" to the game through his father, and his passion for a great story were central themes in this conversation, but there's more about creativity and process, building a brand, and how golf puts us in positions to create meaningful and lasting connections. After one of the best shows we've ever put out, the Golf Gods put us back in our place. YouTube wouldn't work, Joe kept having connectivity issues, and Matt was stressed out from the moment we pushed RECORD.Nevertheless, we still managed to put out an hour of content for you! Probably the most successful Shriners tournament in recent years took place this past weekend, with Tom Kim going back-to-back and earning his third career win. Harry Hall and several other local PGA Tour Professionals had a good tournament, but the buzz was all created by Lexi Thompson, and what we believe was her excellent play for the two days she was out there.Matty G checked in with the weather FORECast for this weekend, and we covered the latest VGN event that took place out at Boulder City Muni.Matt is in a HUGE funk with his game that has now leaked into his putting. 40 Putts on Saturday was enough to send him again down the rabbit hole of what's wrong with his game.We wrapped it up by looking at the ZOZO Field and odds and made our picks for the Tournament. Thanks for checking out the show! This one was a doozie, but we pulled it off despite all the technology glitches! We'll be back next week better than ever!--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you haven't checked out our NEW YouTube channel, please do and hit that Subscribe Button for us! More content is coming to that channel as Matt learns the ins and outs of making better videos. You've heard of the Walk of Fame, but have you ever come across the swing of fame? Well, you're about to. This golf-themed episode is a hole-in-one, packed with our reflections on the PGA tour's annual stop in Las Vegas, the Raiders' latest victory, and a shoe update from Joe and Matt as they try out the TRUE Knit 3s. We also zoom in on a European vendor who's saying 'no' to resellers by testing customers' golfing prowess before purchase. Could this be golf's new regular? Adventure is at every turn, or should we say every swing! Joe spills the beans on his burrito escapades, Matt reveals his secret weapon, a six iron for a 70-yard pitch shot, and Rodin's sniper skills aren't confined to gaming but translate well onto the golf course. As we tee off for a spirited debate on Lexi Thompson stepping into the Shriners Hospital for Children Open, join our discussion on the challenges and the anticipation of her playing against the boys. We'll also flash back to some memorable episodes, engage you with some golf trivia, and update you on the odds for the tournament favorites. So grab a club and swing into action with us for an exciting mix of golf talk, industry news, and a whole lot of fun.------------------------------------------------------------------If you haven't checked out our NEW YouTube channel, please do and hit that Subscribe Button for us! Joe McDonnell has always known good golf. He grew up in Hoylake and has been a member of Royal Liverpool since he was a young lad. Today, McDonnell is changing the way the industry thinks and looks at golf holes. Using state-of-the-art topography technology, 3D graphics and an artist's touch, McDonnell's hyper-detailed renderings of golf holes land somewhere between golf course architecture and modern art—and we're proud to feature them in the “Yardage Book” department of The Golfer's Journal. The man from Hoylake joins host Tom Coyne to give us a brief history of the land at Royal Liverpool, why first-time players may sleep on the golf course, what we can expect at the 2023 Open Championship, the process behind his art and some of his favorite golf holes in the world.

Patrick Koenig is a wildly enthusiastic golfer and photographer with pictures that have been featured on the pages of GOLF.com, Golf Digest, The Golfer's Journal, and countless other publications. He is also on a mission in 2023 to set a world record! Back in 2018, Patrick embarked on a golf journey that changed his life. He purchased a RV and turned it into a RGV (recreational golf vehicle) and toured the country playing golf with 793 people on 405 golf courses across 48 states. This year, the time has come to rekindle the magic. The time has come for The RGV Tour 2.0 and he's not messing around. This year he plans to play 500 golf courses in a single year and set the world record for different 18 hole golf courses played in 365 days. He's living the dream and it was incredible listening to him talk about his journey. Patrick shares his motivation for the tour, talks about his favorite courses, shares the ups and downs of being on the road, and lets us know how we can get involved along the way. In a Christmas tradition unlike any other, we have a wide-ranging discussion including an update on Mike's 10k consequence from the Autumn Gauntlet, fashions we held on for too long, songs that represent our current progress, whether we'd be scratch on easier courses, faking dramatic readings, Seinfeld characters that best represent our games, the most sensitive question we've ever been asked, we unapologetically retell a story we told last Christmas episode, and we assess how we would hold up as a Mall Santa. We'll be back the first week of January for Season 6. Kudos to the Golfer's Journal: https://www.golfersjournal.com/gift Want bonus content? Andrew Green has become one of the hottest names in golf course architecture thanks to his renovation work at Inverness, Congressional, Oak Hill, Scioto, Wannamoisett and many other golden age classics in need of a refresh. But does he want to build something from scratch? He joins Tom Coyne on the TGJ Podcast to discuss his passion for history, his start in golf course design, love for his job and why William Flynn is his spirit animal.
In 2004, software developer Mark Sweeney was fed up with missing putts. So he dedicated two years of his life to creating a system that delivers perfect reads. He called it AimPoint. You've seen players from Keegan Bradley to Lydia Ko to Adam Scott straddle their line and read their break in finger-widths. Now, hear from the inventor of this peculiar but effective strategy, as Sweeney and host Tom Coyne dig into this method that took 100,000 lines of code to get right. Along the way, you'll learn how Golf Channel's virtual putting line came to be, how a group of third graders helped unlock an AimPoint mystery, and why you might already be a much better putter than you think.
Tron doesn't hold back on Twitter. Soly shared his No Laying Up origin story in #7, and DJ's byline is a regular in The Golfer's Journal. But what about the member of No Laying Up whose presence, quite literally, overshadows them all? Phil Landes (aka Big Randy) has become one of golf media's favorite characters via his appearances across NLU's platforms, yet a part of him is ducking the spotlight–not an easy feat at 6'8”. He joins the podcast to talk with Tom Coyne about how a former accountant and freshmen basketball coach came to find himself drinking out of the Solheim Cup, and whether this dream job is a dream job after all. In this honest and insightful discussion, Phil reflects on living with two names, his current romantic circumstance, how we're all just a different shade of short to him, and why he doesn't want to meet your dog.

Casey Bannon is a golf storyteller: he holds down the editorial wing at The Golfer's Journal, and really wants to run a piece about Robert Garrigus' weed farm. Casey also wears two pairs of socks at once, and is developing queues that help him stay present in an increasingly noisy world. The Shrinks brought Casey on the couch to discuss the mystique of good golf events, The Plateau Effect, and as the session title would suggest, Casey's SWEET FEET. Today's show is a conversation between Randy and Jim Hartsell about Jim's new book, "When Revelation Comes". The book is available now through Back9 Press and is Jim's second book. Besides his full-length writing, Jim writes at his website, jhartsellgolf.com, and contributes to a number of places, including The Golfer's Journal, Links Diary, and our own NLU website. "When Revelation Comes" is about a trip Jim took to Scotland in August of 2021 in the aftermath of losing his youngest son, Jordan, unexpectedly. It's a beautiful book that will touch on the full range of emotions, and stands both as a love letter to Scotland and Scottish golf, but also about what it means to love, lose, and try to carry on in the wake of an unimaginable tragedy. Ryan Carey wasn't looking to become the world's foremost golf memorabilia auctioneer. A lawyer by trade, Carey started Green Jacket Auctions as a side gig to feed his passion for the game's history. 16 years and one very expensive set of irons later, Carey and his team are riding high and traveling the world in search of the next great golf item. Carey joins Tom Coyne live in the Broken Tee Society Discord server to offer a glimpse into the career that's taken him everywhere from Tom Watson's home bar to Perry Maxwell's basement. Plus, he details the record-breaking sale of the “Tiger Slam” irons, and delivers an otherworldly prediction when asked about the Holy Grail of golf collecting.
Unless you've already dug into Charlie Warzel's profile in TGJ #21, you've probably never heard of Ben Garner. You've likely never heard about the kid who used to beat Tiger Woods (sometimes) and who buddied around SoCal with the future superstar, two kids who understood what it was like to live beneath the shadow of demanding golf dads. Ben Garner joins the Golfer's Journal podcast to discuss what happened between being unbeatable and being beaten, to where he couldn't even look at a golf course or tell his old friend how he was really doing. If it all sounds like a typical wayward prodigy tale, you'll want to listen to hear where Charlie Warzel finds him, and how it all came back to Ben in abundant and unforeseeable ways.

Tom Doak has a reputation for being difficult. Golf media has described him as socially awkward and emotionally remote, traits that are often overlooked in favor of the brilliance he's brought to course designs around the world. But there is much more to Tom Doak and his public persona than people have discussed or know about–until now. With unflinching candor, Doak digs deep on “my media reputation as an asshole,” discussing what he's learned about himself through group therapy and addressing his complicated relationships with peers like Gil Hanse and David McLay Kidd. It all makes for a riveting conversation about the forces that shape our lives–some that we might change, and others that we learn to accept.
Dottie Pepper has little sympathy for the modern professional golfer. But you can't blame her—the beloved CBS analyst and 17-winner on the LPGA never had anything handed to her. She turned down a Dinah Shore sponsor's exemption in college because she couldn't afford to travel; she borrowed $5,000 from her grandfather to play in the 1987 U.S. Open; and her parents rented out their house to horse jockeys and trainers every summer to pay for her junior golf. So, no, she's not interested in hearing about no cuts and guaranteed pay days. Pepper joins Assistant Editor Casey Bannon to discuss the current state of the professional golfer, the value in taking the hard way, criticisms of the broadcast, writing her first book and what's currently in her garden.
Ward Jarvis has gone from caddie to theology professor to firefighter to yip fixer. He joins host Tom Coyne to explain the science behind what he calls a “periodic loss of an automatic ability,” and how he helped three-time PGA Tour winner Brendon Todd overcome them. Jarvis also details how his own struggle with stuttering led him to teaching players of all skill levels how to build new memory patterns and find their flow. Thomas Friedman has been the foreign affairs Op-Ed columnist for the New York Times since 1995. He's also in the Western Golf Association Caddie Hall of Fame. He's been to Saudi Arabia, and he's been inside the ropes, caddying for Chi Chi Rodriguez in the 1970 U.S. Open. In short: He knows the Gulf, and he knows golf. Friedman joins the podcast and explains how the reality on the ground in Saudi Arabia is much more complex than what's being reported in golf circles and why the LIV golf experiment thus far “has been a colossal failure as an effort to improve their image." He also discusses life as a golf diehard, including stories from his time as a member of both Seminole and Beirut Golf & Country Club, how golf has led to some juicy scoops in his Pulitzer Prize-winning career, and why politics should be kept off the course.
Traveling the country in a sprinter van playing golf…do we have your attention??? Foster McCune of The Golfer's Journal joins the pod to talk about life on the road in their tricked-out van created to spread golfing love via events for golf sickos! Foster talks about his background with National Links Trust, how the van came into existence and tells several “stories from the road” (anyone like wine cellars in Monterrey or ping-pong from the caddy barn at Erin Hills?). Then we throw some superlatives at him to get him to name names on favorite course, favorite event and, of course, road trip music! Brad Faxon joins the podcast on the heels of a thrilling U.S. Open finish to reflect on what made Brookline such an enjoyable venue, and why we're now seeing the fruits of his labor with Rory McIlroy. The pride of Rhode Island also dives into the current state of the flat stick, giving context to the rise of mallets and AimPoint green reading. But stick around for the time Greg Norman called Faxon to an impromptu players-only meeting before the 1994 Shark Shootout. Those details might sound familiar.
The inmates are running the asylum this week, as Keith (the "third leg", LOL) is out tending to personal matters so it's J-Teal and Scooter running the boards! The guys do a deep-dive into a full weekend of golf for themselves, as J-Teal and Scoots recap their 90+ holes of golf from Enid, Boiling Springs in Woodward, and then back to OKC in a whirlwind 72-hour tour! Our boys joined the Golfers Journal crew in Woodward for the weekend and enjoyed watching them take in all the good stuff that is Boiling Springs, a/k/a, the "House that Jeff Wagner built!" The guys then recap Coach Hybl and the OU Sooners' big win down at a wet/windy Whispering Pines to clinch the men's Big 12 Championship! There's some Mexico Open talk with Jon Rahm back in the winner's circle, as well as a quick preview of this weekend's Wells Fargo Championship, and J-Teal's favorite defending champion, Rory McIlroy!! Plus don't forget about the second installment of the guys' new "Miles of Maxwell" series dropping this Wednesday (5/4/2022), which highlights Hillcrest Country Club in Bartlesville, Oklahoma! This was a fun one! We were lucky to spend some time talking with Tom Coyne. If you don't know who Tom is, he is an award-winning and New York Times bestselling author. Over the next 30 minutes, we will attempt to refocus your energy, and recenter your mind, with a meditation designed specifically for golfers, but not just for golfers. If you are new to meditation, well welcome – this is a beginner friendly exercise. And if you are experienced in the art of mindfulness, we hope you'll find some new ideas and sounds to work into your own routine. Either way, we think you'll find that the benefits of meditation will carry on beyond this brief session, and hopefully, out onto the golf course with you.
As we touch the century mark here at The Golfer's Journal Podcast (where has the time gone?), we wanted to celebrate our 100th episode by giving something special to our listeners; something you can use over and over again. After a quick recap of our best and (very) worst from the previous 100 episodes, voice artist Erik Braa guides you through a 30-minute golf specific meditation. His soothing tone paired with ambient golf sounds will take you from your couch or office and transport you to the first tee. And his quiet message will help you find that on-course focus we're all searching for.
Matt Chominski is a professor of philosophy and theology at Delaware's Archmere Academy—where once upon a time a young Tom Coyne wandered the halls. And when Chominski isn't unpacking the fundamental truths of life, he's putting some of those lessons into practice on the course. He joins our host for a thought-provoking conversation on what it means to be human, the absurdity of golf at its core, why the game is technically “useless,” what it's trying to teach us, and which famous thinkers best represent current Tour players.

Mark Stewart once had a crazy idea to build a golf course on his family's old sand pit. Turns out it was a pretty good idea. Tobacco Road Golf Club has been wowing guests for over 20 years now and Stewart is still at the helm of the operation. When the project began in 1998, he took a chance on an up and coming golf architect named Mike Strantz. There was no way to know how impactful that decision would become. Today, Mike Strantz courses have a cult following and Tobacco Road is widely considered his masterpiece. Stewart has always liked taking risks and he's still at working to make his dream course an even better place for people to have an unforgettable golf experience. Stewart and I first met a few years ago when I was doing some reporting for the Golfer's Journal on how Tobacco Road came to be. We've stayed in touch since the story came out and have become good friends. He keeps a close eye on trends in the golf industry and we often talk about how things are going at his course and here at my home track in Tallahassee. Now, as the COVID19 golf boom reaches the one year mark, I wanted to catch up with Stewart to see how things were going and what he is doing at Tobacco Road to seize on these generational golf business opportunities. During our discussion, we talked about the impacts to golf travel, the surge in new players, and what strategies the Tobacco Road team has pursued to capture new business. We also dove into some of Stewart's memories from the early days and working with Mike Strantz. I'm always impressed with how much he emphasizes the preservation of Strantz's work there and we spoke on that as well. There is also a fun segment where we dive into Stewart's favorite movie franchise - The Fast and the Furious. You will get a kick out of that. It's always a treat to talk to Mark Stewart and this episode was a blast to record. I'm headed up to Tobacco Road again soon and look forward to seeing that great place again with a new batch of friends. If you haven't been yet...I highly recommend you go. Tom Coyne doesn't need much of an introduction. If you are a golf reader, his name will be familiar. Coyne is the author of a handful of moving golf books including a couple New York Times Bestsellers. His golf tales include popular titles such as A Gentleman's Game, Paper Tiger, A Course Called Ireland, A Course Called Scotland, and his latest effort, A Course Called America. In those books, Coyne takes readers along with him on a series of ambitious adventures. All of which begin with a looming question and become a journey of personal discovery. In these beautifully told tales, Coyne takes readers right along with him on cross country adventures that provide a backdrop for stories about the people and places that make golf a game worth playing. In addition to his books, Coyne has found a number of other impressive outlets to tell golf stories through. In recent years he has made a home at The Golfer's Journal where he has authored numerous essays and articles about his experiences in the game. Recently, he has been named Senior Editor for the publication. Coyne has also spent time in front of the camera hosting a variety of shows included a digital series called The Links Life that chronicles his worldly travels. All of which is impressive for a married father of two girls who teaches full time at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. I've known Tom Coyne for a few years now and have thoroughly enjoyed his company on and off the golf course. He's been a great guide on my own golf writing career journey and was even kind enough to write the forward for my first book, The Nine Virtues of Golf. I'm excited to dive into his latest book and with his new role at The Golfer's Journal I'm looking forward to have him edit some of my work. Coyne joins me on Mid-Am Crisis to talk about A Course Called America, his plans to promote the book this Summer, and what his new role with The Golfer's Journal means for his career. We talked about life and golf of course and as always his sense of humor and enjoyable disposition made for a great conversation. I'm hopeful our travels will lead us to playing together again soon and perhaps he even will give me a good grade on my next submission to The Golfer's Journal. Casey Bannon gets text messages from me at all hours of the day and night. Most of them contain crazy ideas. Story pitches and other wild hairs that I hope will eventually become features in my favorite golf publication - The Golfer's Journal. I've had the great fortune to contribute a few fun stories for the Journal in recent years and one of the best parts of that experience has been working with Casey. He's the Assistant Editor there, but that title only covers a fraction of his value to their team. The Golfer's Journal works very much like a start-up. That means that Casey and other team members have to be able to do lots of different jobs. For him, that means writing features, editing others, producing podcasts, running live events, pushing merch, and even delivering social media content. Launched five years ago, the Journal is starting to hit an impressive stride. What started as a bold idea has now grown into one of golf media's strongest brands. That starts with producing a beautiful quarterly magazine that their team refers to as "the book." It's a highly attractive product with a quickly growing customer base. What makes the Journal stand out is its combination of stirring words and moving photography delivered on thick stock glossy pages. With golf stories presented in such a relentlessly beautiful way, their brand of reporting has challenged the idea that "print is dead." Subscriptions are pricey, but those who are part of the "broken tee society" are buying much more than just a magazine. They are part of a growing culture of golfers who are looking for and finding a deeper and more meaningful experience in the game. The Journal does a brilliant job of packaging that together in the book, podcasts, merchandise, and events. What they are building is a community of golfers around the globe. There is a lot to love about The Golfer's Journal and Casey is one of the workhorses who helps make all that come to life. He joins me for a discussion about those efforts, his career in journalism, and what motivates him to keep delivering high-level storytelling. We also dive into a few projects we've worked on and share a few insider stories about how The Golfer's Journal pushes the edge in golf media. Casey is a great guy who I enjoy working with and I'm glad to help others get to know him better through this episode. I'm also hopeful this will help keep him answering my late-night story pitch texts. If you don't subscribe to The Golfer's Journal, I would highly recommend you go and do so right now. For this Ladies of Golf episode we welcomed a freaking rock star. Yes, really. Elizabeth Nelson is a singer-songwriter for the DC-based garage punk band The Paranoid Style. She is a regular contributor to The Ringer, Oxford American, Pitchfork and The Golfer's Journal. We talked about her love of the sport and its characters, her writing style and how music has a place in golf. Before we get into the interview, Abby recaps the busy weekend for women's golf, including Tsubasa Kajitani's victory at the Augusta National Women's Amateur and Patty Tavatanakit's wire-to-wire win at the ANA Inspiration. Lydia Ko made a huge run during the final round, posting a 62 to tie the 18-hole scoring record at the ANA. Meanwhile, Patty delivered a flawless final round to become the first rookie to win the ANA Inspiration since Juli Inkster in 1984. She put on a clinic AND delivered fireworks, people.
Christian Hafer photographs always move me in some way. That's why I'm really glad he decided to focus his craft on golf. I started following Hafer on Instagram back when he was relatively unknown and always was quick to compliment his work. Over the years our messages have ranged from photography to writing, and on to many other topics related to golf. He's been one of my favorite internet pen pals and it has been a real pleasure to see his career take off the way it has. I knew he was destined for big things and when folks at the Golfers Journal and Golf Magazine came calling his status as one of golf's top photogs was quickly cemented. Today, he's raising a family and running point on all the photography for Golf Magazine/Golf.com while also working with some of the top brands in the sport. Those publications have never looked better as his work continues to evolve and impress. Hafer has been involved ina variety of other golf-related efforts including The Burning Cart Society( a personal favorite ) and I love hearing about what he's cooking up next. In this discussion, we touched on all sorts of creative concepts and of course talked in-depth about our love for golf, family, and the spiritual side of the game. While we've still never met in person, Hafer feels like an old friend. I think you'll walk away the same way after listening. If you don't follow Hafer on Instagram you are missing out. Samantha Marks likes to share her golf takes on Twitter. That's how she has developed a large following and it has even helped her build a successful business. Marks has a knack for modern media - undoubtedly shaped by her stint in broadcast journalism. She formerly worked for the Golf Channel until the company went through a severe reorganizing. Now, she's running her own marketing firm with many growing clients in the golf industry. Marks loves to talk golf online and she isn't afraid to mix in humorous accounts from her personal life. That approach continues to pay off with opportunities like contributing words for The Golfer's Journal and doing brand collaborations with companies like Amstel Light. In our discussion, Marks shared her journey to playing collegiate golf at Arkansas, her pivot to working in media, and how losing her job at Golf Channel led to her becoming a business owner. She's a tenacious spirit and a witty commentator on the day to day happenings in golf. After following her for some time, I'm convinced that she will continue to capture the attention of golfers around the globe. We had a great chat and I'm hopeful it will lead to many more. My guest this week has written for both Golf.com and The Golfer's Journal, is a Twitter-thread master, and just an all-around great human being. Laz and I talk about his current water-fast, his piece in the most recent edition of The Golfer's Journal titled "Life in the Front Row", his essay about race from June of 2020, and close things out talking about sitcoms and comedy television. You should definitely take some time to read Laz's Golf.com piece here: When it comes to making golf more diverse, it's time for a new approach. And if you aren't a Golfer's Journal subscriber, as a new subscriber myself, I cannot recommend it enough. It's worth every dime. In fact, it's a steal considering everything that comes with a subscription. And follow him on Twitter @Laz_Versalles. You will not regret it. Don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review Golf Origin Stories and check out my guest appearance on the Talking Golf Getaways podcast with Mitch Laurance and Darin Bunch! Thanks for listening!
D.J. Piehowski is part of the No Laying Up collective. Along with his friends and partners Chris Solomon(Soly), Todd Schuster(Tron Carter), Neil Schuster, and Phil Landes(Big Randy), they have created one of the most entertaining and informative golf media companies in the game today. Although D.J. was the last to officially join the team, he acts as a sort of creative glue that helps to elevate their content through his superb storytelling abilities. D.J. cut his teeth in golf media working first at Golfweek and later at the PGA Tour. Through his writing and other skillsets he also helped The Golfer's Journal become an incredibly popular brand in the golf world. Through the latter engagements, he made quick friends with the original No Laying Up guys and before long found himself as an integral part of their team. D.J. brings a unique perspective to their content and his affinity for finding the right strings to pull during interviews adds an interesting depth to their productions. His love of filmmaking and study of cinema shows through in nearly every video they share across their Youtube channel. I first connected with D.J. a few years ago when he was kind enough to read some of my earliest writings(they weren't very good!) on the game and the tips he was nice enough to give me then still help shape my work today. We recently spent some time together when he, Neil, and Big Randy visited my hometown of Tallahassee, Florida to shoot a season of their budget-friendly golf show called Strapped. As much as I enjoyed watching them create their show in person, it was even more fun to talk with him about the work they do at No Laying Up during this discussion. D.J. is one of the great voices in the game of golf today and he brings tremendous authenticity to every story he tells. If you enjoy their work or just love hearing from someone who's chasing a dream with friends I think you'll really like listening to our chat. Lord knows it had me ready to go tell some stories of my own. You can dive into the No Laying Up universe of golf content at https://nolayingup.com/ For more of my golf writing and other related content, please be sure to check out my site at https://jayrevell.com/ If you enjoy listening to Mid-Am Crisis I hope you'll leave a review for the show and help spread the word by sharing with friends. I love getting to know people who are obsessed with golf. Laz Versalles is one such person. Laz is a former club professional who now writes about the game for outlets such as The Golfer's Journal, Golf.com, and Deadspin. Although we've never met in person(we are hoping to change that soon) I feel like we were able to talk like old pals. Laz and I have exchanged many notes over Twitter in recent years(usually triggered by some mutual admiration) and I'm thrilled that we got to have an extended chat in this episode. Laz is truly one of golf's most interesting personas these days and I highly recommend giving him a follow on Twitter( @laz_versalles). He also makes his voice heard over on No Laying Up's message board called The Refuge. In our discussion, we talked about his family migration from Cuba to Minnesota, how he landed in California, and why you should never overlook strip malls for international cuisine. There was some golf talk too of course. I feel fortunate that golf Twitter has allowed me to know folks like Laz and I greatly appreciate that he took some time to catch up on our shared love for the game. Enjoy the show! Geoff Ogilvy is a major champion that also happens to be a Golfer's Journal contributor. The former U.S. Open champ wrote the Yardage Book section of TGJ No. 6 and he joins the podcast to discuss growing up in Australia's Sand Belt as well as the state of the professional and recreational game around the world.

Jim Moriarty has covered golf for more than 40 years as a reporter, author and photographer. He joins the podcast to talk through how golf has changed throughout his career and why he's still excited to watch the action on Sunday afternoons. Jim also makes his Golfer's Journal debut with an essay in TGJ No. 5.
Managing editor Travis Hill takes you step-by-step through the latest issue of The Golfer's Journal with stories and context on how each feature came together and why it was chosen. TGJ No. 4 marks one full year in the life of our magazine and we couldn't be more thankful to have all of the readers (and listeners) that have helped support it.
People like Len Mattiace often turn into footnotes of history as the guys who almost got it done. But his story is more complicated than near-misses on big stages. In a special Golfer's Journal podcast, Mattiace shares the story of his career – from watching a major slip away to gaining perspective from injuries.
Will Leitch is not a golfer, which, in a strange way, is a major reason we wanted him to write for The Golfer's Journal. As a sportswriter who has appeared in every outlet from the New York Times to Deadspin (which he helped found), Will has a unique perspective from outside the world of golf. He discussed his complicated relationship with the game in an essay in TGJ No. 3 and elaborated on what's kept him away from golf in this episode of the podcast.
With TGJ No. 3 about to ship to subscribers, we wanted to look back at how and why The Golfer's Journal got started. Publisher Brendon Thomas and Managing Editor Travis Hill discussed where the idea came from, the 2-year struggle to put TGJ No. 1 together and much more.
Tom Coyne has played every links course in Ireland and Scotland, written four books and a screenplay. He brings a lifetime of golf experience and opinion to The Golfer's Journal and, for the first time, the TGJ podcast.
