Welcome to the kbbreview podcast, this is episode 9 of Season 5 and your host as always is Andy Davies.Great episode this week as we chat to one of the most high profile designers in the UK – Linda Barker. She is one of the original ‘celebrity' designers, shooting to fame on Changing Rooms of course and is now a very successful interior designer and interior product designer plus, of course, a judge at the kbbreview Retail & Design Awards. We talk about how she got into design as a profession, how she got the Changing Rooms gig, and she tell us all about her new kitchen that she designed herself that will feature on the cover of the next issue of our sister consumer title Kitchens Bedrooms & Bathrooms. There's no question in my mind that we wouldn't have the huge choice and variety in the kbb industry today if the public's understanding and interest in interior design hadn't been kick-started by Changing Rooms. It's a hugely influence on the trajectory of this industry and we discuss all that too.Once again, a massive huge thank you to our very good friends at Masterclass for being our Season Five Kitchen Sponsor, as many of you will know, they are a proudly British manufacturer of quality kitchen furniture, offering an amazing range of unique products for over 45 years. To find out more about you can become part of the Masterclass family go to masterclasskitchens.co.uk/hello-studiosAnd don't forget that entries are open now for the kbbreview Retail & Design Awards 2023. It's totally FREE to enter and we have categories for designers, retailers, supplier, and installers so there's something for everyone.Go to kbbreview.com/awards to find everything you need to know.

In this episode of Connecting the Docs: Unprocessed, host John Horan and oral history interns Michelle Witt and Madison Riley discuss the history of two dams and the lakes they created. The story of Fontana Dam and Lake as a tourist destination in western North Carolina is well documented, but this episode goes underneath the surface and uncovers the various towns and landmarks that were flooded when the dam was built. In much the same way, Jordan Dam and Lake changed the landscape of Chatham County. It took decades to build, and yet, much less is written and known about this story. In addition to discussing the dams, lakes, and what happened to towns like Japan and Seaforth, this episode explores how archivists and historians do their research to tell stories. It gives some tips on the best ways to interact with the repository at the State Archives and beyond.   Sources Mentioned: “Moving Deadline Near for Fontana Reservoir Residents.” The Sylva Herald and Ruralite (Sylva, NC), October 25, 1944, p.4. https://newspapers.digitalnc.org/lccn/sn92074071/1944-10-25/ed-1/seq-4/   Map of North Carolina County Road Survey of Graham County, 1930, North Carolina State Highway Commissions. https://dc.lib.unc.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/ncmaps/id/2050/rec/61   Map of Graham County (State Highway and Public Works Commission), 1953, North Carolina State Highways and Public Works Commission. https://dc.lib.unc.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/ncmaps/id/7757/rec/78   “There'll Be No ‘Japan.'” The Wallace Enterprise (Wallace, NC), December 31, 1942, p. 6. https://newspapers.digitalnc.org/lccn/sn94058243/1942-12-31/ed-1/seq-6/   Mrs. Callie Pilkington home in Japan, NC, destroyed by Fontana Dam Project, June 1944, taken by John Hemmer. Dog mayor and goat mayor raise money to renovate playground in Vermont town

A dog and a goat have helped raise money to renovate a community playground in the town of Fair Haven, Vermont. What makes this couple different is that the dog is the mayor and the goat is the former mayor. Fair Haven residents elected Lincoln the goat as mayor in 2018. Murfee the Cavalier King Charles spaniel is the current mayor. The couple has raised a total of about $30,000 (¥3.1 million) to rehabilitate the playground and to help get local kids involved in the community. The town chipped in another $20,000 (¥2.1 million). The oddball idea of pet mayor elections to raise money came from a local town manager. The pets serve as honorary mayors. Ironically, Murfee is not welcome on the playground. There is a “No dogs allowed” sign. “Murfee is going to take that up with the town,” said his owner, Linda Barker, with a chuckle. (AP) This article was provided by The Japan Times Alpha.
