Richard Ayoade is Gyles's guest this week. A director, writer and actor, Ayoade is well known for his portrayal of Maurice Moss in cult sitcom The I.T. Crowd. He's also an acclaimed film director (the award-winning Submarine was his debut, and his next film The Double starred Jesse Eisenberg), a writer of books, and a TV personality. Gyles and Richard have a connection - Richard is a friend of Gyles's son, Benet, and they talk about their first meeting back when Richard was a teenager. They talk about Richard's childhood, his parents, his schooldays and how he met his wife, Lydia, at Cambridge, via a detour in which Gyles explains how he developed a teenaged infatuation with Joan of Arc. This is a rare, intimate and charming interview with Richard Ayoade; huge thanks to him for such an interesting conversation. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Before Joe & Adam can get into that though, they dig into the wonders of Sally Hawkins, and The Shape of Water in particular. In this episode, Joe winds Adam up about various things Ayoade has said about coming of age movies, and film in general – in fact you'd think Adam didn't even like the film, when he sort of did. Oasis has begun 2024 with a real focus on prayer; learning to lean into God with thanksgiving. This week, Adrian and Uduak encourage the community to continue to press into prayer, beginning with Jesus's desire for the temple to be a "house of prayer for all nations" and exploring what it looks like to draw close to god and pray with confidence and clarity.
In part 2 of our episode on the geopolitics of global health, host Garry Aslanyan speaks with Ayoade Alakija, who says "everyone in the health sector must have a basic understanding and training in geopolitics." Ayoade is the co-chair of the African Union's African Vaccine Delivery Alliance and WHO Special Envoy and co-chair for the ACT-Accelerator. She speaks about the world becoming a “geopolitical cauldron” and how that directly influences global health practice and policy.Related episode documents, transcripts and other information can be found on our website.Subscribe to the Global Health Matters podcast newsletter. Richard Ayoade is one of the modern masters of UK comedy, honing his craft at Cambridge (where he was President of the Footlights Society performing group -- which also include John Oliver). Since then he has become a staple on British tv with great roles in classic sitcoms such as The Mighty Boosh and The IT Crowd. He now hosts a clever travel show called "Travel Man" in which he explores a different city each episode with a celebrity guest. Find extended clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Ayoade? The Brits have a gift for comedy television shows that are very funny AND very surreal. Case in point -- The Mighty Boosh. It's so hard to describe in print, so just feast your eyes. https://youtu.be/ngXzLcWGMTY While a long-rumored US version has yet to materialize, the UK show The IT Crowd remains a cult favorite. In the show, Ayoade plays Moss -- a socially awkward and painfully shy computer tech. Here's a fan clip of the Best of Moss. https://youtu.be/o0gH_omVWIg Richard Ayoade may seem an unlikely choice to host a travel show, but he makes the show like his humor -- full of dry wit and wry observations. The premise of Travel Man is simple. Ayoade and a celebrity guest explore a foreign city for 48 hours. In the hands of Ayoade and a fine guest such as Jon Hamm, it's a delight to watch. https://youtu.be/q2C0EO0zzAY

The show focuses on fictional horror author Garth Marenghi (played by Matthew Holness) and his publisher Dean Learner (played by Richard Ayoade), characters who originated in the Garth Marenghi's Fright Knight stage show. The series is presented as a special release of the fictional television series Darkplace. Within the canon of the show, Darkplace was produced in the 1980s, but failed to gain an audience anywhere but Peru, eventually becoming a lost series. Saved footage has recently resurfaced, with Marenghi & co. republishing with the intent of gaining interest from a modern audience. The "original footage" of the show is intercut or bookended with commentary from many of the "original" cast, where characters such as Marenghi and Learner reflect on what it was like to make the show. Darkplace parodies the fashion, special effects, production gaffes, and music of low-budget '80s television, as well as the modern practice of including commentary tracks on DVD releases of old films and television shows. Darkplace was broadcast in a late-night timeslot, with very little advertising, and met with poor viewing figures.[1] It built up a significant internet following, leading Channel 4 to repeat the series and produce a DVD release. In 2005, Channel 4's Film Four asked Holness and Ayoade to write a script for a film version of their programme.[2] The show was later broadcast in the United States on the Sci-Fi Channel and Adult Swim[1] and is available to stream on Peacock.

We were clearly very excited when recording this episode seeing as it is almost an hour long! This episode is about Richard Ayoade's 2010 film "Submarine". The film follows a peculiar boy named Oliver Tate, who tries to balance his first relationship while simultaneously saving his parent's marriage. We analyze the story, and the many visual tools that Ayoade uses to enhance this experience.

We discuss silly book titles, writer's voices versus comedian's personas, how the brain can short-circuit ‘funny' and ‘good', and how War and Peace is just lots and lots of Tweets lined up next to each other. * How to find Ben: He runs a monthly stand-up show called FRESH CHESTNUTS at the Betsey Trotwood pub in Farringdon! You should go! He can be found talking on Twitter here. He can be found managing a bookshop here. And on his very nice website here. * Boooooks we talk about: Hera Lindsay Bird by Hera Lindsay Bird Ayoade on Ayoade by Richard Ayoade Nothing To See Here by Kevin Wilson Something Fishy by P G Wodehouse Lustre by Raven Leilani Anthropology by Dan Rhodes In addition: Stewart Lee, Tim Key, Ducks, Newburyport, and Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis May we recommend purchasing your books from an independent bookshop like, oh I don't know, The Review Bookshop. * How to find me: on Twitter @lily_lindon or on Instagram @bookymcbookface

We're back after our brief hiatus and we're bringing the good books this week. Camilla contemplates how many cups of coffee in a day is too many, and waxes lyrical about both Megan Nolan's debut Acts of Desperation and Kristen Arnett's strange but brilliant exploration of a family grieving in Mostly Dead Things. Elle finally tells us when International Men's Day is (November 19th) in her review of The Problem With Men and discusses the strange but wonderful Ayoade on Top, a book entirely about the movie ‘View from the Top' starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Both Elle and Camilla are broken by spending their lives and money at the pub for the sake of the British economy. Camilla and Elle for Mayor!
Former royals Meghan and Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah saw accusations of racism against the British royal family as well as reflections on Meghan’s personal battle with her mental health. Former deputy private secretary to Prince Charles Peter Westmacott and New European columnist Bonnie Greer join Christiane Amanpour to unpack the interview and how the crown will react. To mark International Women’s Day Belgian PM Alexander De Croo explains why gender equality is a moral and economic issue that men should work to achieve. Then turning to covid, Ayoade Alakija talks about leading the push for vaccine equity in Africa. She says that as wealthy countries snap up vaccine doses other countries are left behind. And finally, Billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman is funding Inspiration4 — the world’s first all-civilian space mission — with SpaceX. Our Walter Isaacson speaks to him and Hayley Arceneaux who is set to be the first crew member of the historic mission. To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy

Richard is globally recognised due to his roles in iconic shows such as The IT Crowd and Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, he's directed two films (Submarine and The Double) and published three books, all on the theme of film - with his latest being a deep dive into one particular rom-com entitled Ayoade on Top. Richard Ayoade became famous for playing Moss in the IT Crowd and went on to present Gadget Man, Travel Man and The Crystal Maze. He was nominated for a BAFTA for directing his first feature film Submarine and has directed music videos for Artic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend and Radiohead. Despite that, he describes himself primarily as a writer and his third book Ayoade on Top has just been published. Choreographer, dancer and artistic director Kevin Turner was spotted for his talent as a child. However, as his career soared, his mental health suffered. He describes how he used dance to recover and now coaches other mentally ill people in how to use movement to heal. When Isabel Vincent was in her 40s and living in New York, her friend Valerie suggested that she meet up with her 91 year-old father for dinner. To Isabel’s surprise they had an immediate spark and became best friends. She went to have dinner with him almost every week for five years until he died at 95-years old. Actor Amanda Abbington became a national hero when, as Mary Watson, she took a bullet for Sherlock. Her new play, The Son, explores the domestic struggle of divorce and depression and she joins us in the studio. And singer Marty Wilde shares his Inheritance Tracks. This week we review - Garth Marenghi's Darkplace Episode 1Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is a British horror parody television series created for Channel 4 by Richard Ayoade and Matthew Holness. The show focuses on fictional horror author Garth Marenghi (played by Holness) and his publisher Dean Learner (played by Ayoade), characters who originated in the Garth Marenghi's Fright Knight stage show.Darkplace is presented as a lost classic: a television series produced in the 1980s, though only broadcast at the time. The presentation features commentary from many of the "original" cast, where characters such as Marenghi and Learner reflect on making the show. Darkplace parodies the fashion, special effects, production gaffes, and music of low-budget '80s television. It was broadcast in a late-night timeslot, with very little advertising, and met with poor viewing figures but nonetheless built up a significant internet following, leading Channel 4 to repeat the series and produce a DVD release. The show was later broadcast in the United States on the Sci-Fi Channel and Adult Swim.Created & written by Richard Ayoade & Matthew HolnessDirected by Richard AyoadeProduced by Charlie HansonGarth Marenghi's Darkplace is available to watch online at - https://bit.ly/2IdqyJZOr to buy on DVD here - https://amzn.to/2QgKa6eComedy Slab is available on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Spotify and Youtube.Subscribe for a new episode each Monday.Get in touch - we're @ComedySlab on Twitter and ComedySlab on Facebook.

A down and dirty review of Richard Ayoade's 'Ayoade on Ayoade. A cinematic odyssey'.
There are a lot of parallels between One Good Thing and 1978 horror film The Swarm. Both are unintentionally funny, there’s a lot of shouting and Paul drives as though he’s been stung by an eternity of bees. That’s where the differences end: we have two Pauls, none of which are Michael Caine, and we’re a podcast. So what right does that give us to talk about a film that patently isn’t two Pauls? What are you talking about? That has nothing to do with anyone. Get the hell off my front lawn before I push you off. The one good thing about The Swarm! Apt jingling, Robot Dad, Dr. Insect, the meaning of expertise, damn it Ned Nedson, sad Ed Harris, doin’ Ayoade and oh yeah, bees. I often read James Blundell's comic book blog, A Comic Book Addict!!, and in May 2017 he posted "So I Wrote a Comic". To celebrate our tenth glorious podcast, I sit down with Alex Gimeno - a.k.a. Ursula 1000! We talk about all sorts of things, but mainly British comedy including The Mighty Boosh, Snuff Box, Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, I.T. Crowd, and generally why Matt Berry is pretty much the best man for the job. We also talk about the future of Ursula 1000, new kid in town Quentin Quatro, and a whole bunch of music. xx, Sherry

Waffle On About Garth Marenghi's Darkplace Written and Starring Mathew Holness and Richard Ayoade this brilliant comedy series first hit the screens back in 2004. A homage to early (and cheap) 1980's style action programmes Darkplace is set in a hospital over the very gates of hell in Romford. Holness plays the main character Garth Marenghi the horror writer who in turn plays Dr Rick Dagless in, Ayoade plays Dean Learner as Garths agent who in turn plays Thornton Reed, Matt Berry plays Todd Rivers who then plays Dr Lucien sanchez and Alice Lowe plays Madeline Wool who then plays Dr Liz Asher. Darkplace is a brilliant, quirky programme that benefits from visual gags, mad syncing, out of scene music cues and seriously bad Foley work all done deliberatlye. Its ounds weird and indeed it is but we hope listening to this podcast while make you go and seek it out and enjoy the dark world of Garth Marenghi and his Darkplace. As is our norm now we have put a special surprise at the end of the episode. So please do listen to the promo's and then enjoy the song taken from Darkplace called 'One Track Lover' performed by Matt Berry as his character in the show 'Todd Rivers'
