Another treatment to help people to manage the symptoms of menopause is available from today. Estrogel will now be available for those requiring oestrogen to meet rising demand for hormone replacement therapy. The other funded patch option is in global short supply. Menopause specialist Dr Linda Dear says Estrogel will make a massive difference for patients, doctors and pharmacists. She says having another option out there means we're not so dependent on patches anymore, which is good news for a lot of people. Pharmac funding's also taking effect for a suite of new treatments, for various cancers and other medical conditions. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
HRT (or MHT) isn't natural territory for The Happy Menopause podcast, but as it's the theme for this year's World Menopause Day, I thought it would be remiss of me not to cover it.HRT has become a pretty contentious issue in recent years, with a lot of people being very entrenched in the strongly for or strongly against position. And amongst all that there are quite a lot of self-styled experts, who are anything but expert in the matter! I've been concerned to see the impact this has had on women in midlife, who've often become confused, fearful or distressed about the lack of clarity and some of the disturbing messages about the risks if you do take it or the risks if you don't take it. As with all things, there is nuance here, so for this episode I've reached out to the excellent Kathy Abernethy whose menopause credentials are beyond question. She's a trained nurse and BMS menopause specialist who's been working as a clinician in the menopause arena since the 90s. Kathy is a hugely respected figure and has helped thousands of women over the years with her evidence-based advice and clinical support. She came on the show in Season 2 to talk about solutions for vaginal dryness, and I was delighted to welcome her back to shine a light on HRT, provide clarity and bust some of the many myths that are out there. We explore 12 key questions and myths about HRT. We look whether you can be too old or too young; how your medical history affects things; whether you're just putting off the inevitable; what happens if you don't take it; and more. Tune in for the inside track and a balanced, evidence-based view of this complex subject from someone who's a genuine expert. Our next episode takes us back to London, where we sit down with the insightful Dr. Rebecca Lewis. In this enlightening conversation, we debunk myths surrounding HRT and breast cancer, delve into the startling fact that only 1.5% of all research studies focus on menopause, and explore the science down to the mitochondrial level. Dr. Lewis highlights the numerous benefits of HRT and emphasises the urgent need for more open discussions about menopause, a condition affecting 51% of the population. Dr. Rebecca Lewis, MBBS FRCA DRCOG MRCGP, is a GP and Menopause Specialist with a rich background in both Anaesthetics and General Practice. Her passion for menopause care stems from witnessing firsthand how dramatically it can impact women's health and quality of life. Now dedicated entirely to this specialty, she works closely with Dr. Louise Newson, helping to establish the Newson Health Group and serving as a director for the Newson Health Research and Education Ltd. and the Balance app. Rebecca is committed to empowering women with evidence-based knowledge, ensuring they can make informed decisions and transform their menopause experience into a positive one.
In this episode I welcome Dr Angela Wright from Spiced Pear Health. Angela is a GP, Menopause Specialist and Clinical Sexologist. She is particularly interested in improving sexual function and menopausal symptoms in women who have undergone cancer treatment. Angela is passionate about women's health and sexology and is frequently asked to teach or talk about this subject. She is a registered trainer for the BMS & FSRH, involved in training future menopause specialists and is an active committee member of the British Society of Sexual Medicine, and the education committee of the Primary Care Women's Health Forum. We covered so much in such a short space of time! We started by talking about the impact of localised (vaginal) oestrogen vs what systemic HRT does - both for GSM (genito-urinary syndrome of menopause) and for sexual dysfunction. For anyone wanting to know more about GSM, or pass information on to their GP, Angela recommends the British Society of Sexual Medicine consensus statement on GSM that's available on their website (linked below). She goes on to explain that there is no increase in recurrence risk for oestrogen receptor positive breast cancers when using localized oestrogen to treat symptoms (and that it can be used alongside letrozole and tamoxifen). We discuss the need for patients to be able to make an informed choice about risks vs benefits, which can be challenging when healthcare professionals are not taught to understand the impact that GSM and sexual dysfunction can have on quality of life - certainly male sexual dysfunction gets a lot more attention and usually pretty rapid treatment! We move on to discuss ‘sex tech' and the burgeoning menopause ‘market' in this area, including laser therapy (TLDR: more research needed, long term effects not known, it's expensive, and vaginal oestrogen would be more effective in the majority of cases). Angela gives an overview of what self-care practices can be helpful for someone struggling with GSM - listen in to find out some very little known information about the clitoris (and how to keep it healthy) that was totally news to me! She also explains that a range of prescription medicines (in particular antidepressants, but also antihistamines, and blood pressure medication) can mess with our sexual responsiveness, so could be something to discuss with our healthcare provider. For anyone struggling that wants to find out more, or support them in advocating for better care, Angela recommended a wide range of resources listed here: Mind The Gap, by Karen Gurney Better Sex Through Mindfulness, by Lori Brotto Becoming Clitorate, by Laurie Mintz Institute for Psychosexual Medicine website directory of practitioners https://www.ipm.org.uk/patients/specialists/ COSRT https://www.cosrt.org.uk/ - list of therapists British Society for Sexual Medicine (email admin@bssm.org.uk and ask for a local practitioner) Menopause-ull webinars https://www.mnetwork.org.uk/resources/recorded-webinars/ You might also be interested in our testosterone episode with Dr Katie Barber: https://middlingalong.com/episodes/middling-along-dr-katie-barber-helps-us-get-to-grips-with-testosterone-dos-and-donts/ You can find Angela online at https://spicedpearhealth.co.uk/ and https://www.instagram.com/spicedpearhealth/ If you enjoy the podcast and would like to help me keep it running (on a shoestring!) please consider buying me a ‘virtual coffee' at Ko-fi.com/middlingalong - or you can support me in a non-monetary way by sharing this episode, or writing a short review online! Welcome to my latest Best Bit, part of my series to celebrate half a million downloads for The Happy Menopause podcast, and the chance for you to catch up on some of the brilliant episodes you may have missed. This edition focuses on vaginal dryness, which is rather the Cinderella of the menopause. In recent years, we've become more confident about discussing our menopause – some women will mention their hot flushes without turning a hair, and the common mental health symptoms such as anxiety and mood swings have also started to come out of the closet, which is a great thing, but we're still not quite ready to be open about the vaginal symptoms. So for this extract, I zoom back to Season 2 Episode 15 where we shine a light on this tricky issue, because it can be a huge problem for many women through the menopause and beyond. To help us, I've turned to one of the most clinically experienced menopause specialists in the UK. Kathy Abernethy, who's been a leading light in the field of women's health and the menopause for over 30 years. From her early years as a sister on a gynae ward, through her time as Chair of the British Menopause Society and now as the leader of a multidisciplinary NHS menopause clinic and director of menopause services at Peppy health, a digital health company, Kathy has consistently championed women's health and transformed the lives of hundreds of women with her clinical advice and support. There really is no better person to give us the lowdown on how to manage vaginal dryness, so tune in to hear her expert advice on moisturisers, lubricants, vaginal oestrogen and how to manage UTIs. To hear the full episode, check out Season 2 Episode 15, where there's even more practical advice for you. If you're a fan of The Happy Menopause, please tell your friends and family, and do give it a 5-star rating and a short review on Apple podcasts, or whichever platform you listen on. It makes a huge difference to the algorithms which influence the visibility of the podcast, so that more women can find the show. Because every woman deserves to have a happy menopause. Check out the full Show Notes for this episode on my website www.well-well-well.co.uk/podcast, where you'll find all the relevant links and references for my guest. Within Canada's 20 million person labour market, 5 million people are working women over the age of 40. According to a recent report from the Menopause Society, an estimated 1 in 10 women will leave the workforce due to unmanaged symptoms of menopause—that's around 500,000 women who will stop working because of their symptoms this year. As the Clinical Director of Medcan's Menopause and Perimenopause Program, Dr. Jennifer Zelovitzky is working to change these statistics. In Part One of our Women's Health Special Series, she's joined by her former client, Norma Pasquale. After having faced debilitating perimenopause symptoms, Norma's life changed after treating her symptoms with hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Hear her story, and learn how you can advocate for your health and get the best care and resources for your unique needs.
In episode 432 I chat with Dr Louise Newson. Louise is a GP and Menopause Specialist, and co-founder of Newson Health Menopause and Wellbeing Centre. She is also author of, ‘The Definitive Guide to the Perimenopause and Menopause'. We discuss her doctor story, hormones and mental health, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), the different hormones and their role in mental health, some of the perimenopause and menopause symptoms in relation to mental health, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), anxieties around HRT, other lifestyle factors that may help, teenage hormones, men and hormones, and much more. Did you know that it's now believed that 80% of chronic disease in later life can be prevented by what we do now in midlife? Me neither! That is an astonishing figure, one that prompted Dr Ferhat Uddin to add metabolic health assessment and improvement to her services at Liberty Health Clinic. As she explains, midlife health isn't just about hormones and she advocates that every woman should have a midlife health check that includes vitamin and mineral levels, cholesterol, blood pressure and triglyceride checks. There is lots of information out there about the menopause but hardly any if you have had a cancer diagnosis as well. Many people say to me they have no idea what their options are, who to ask for help, and that they feel really isolated in their experiences. I started this podcast because there was nothing out there when I was thrown into surgical menopause at the age of 39, which followed on from my cancer diagnosis aged 33.Through the episodes, I want to create more awareness, share information from our fabulous guest experts, doctors and other specialists in the cancer and menopause field. And of course, I will share stories from the people in our community. So that together we can work towards a better menopause experience. When you need clients, you need them now. How does 5 new clients in 7 days sound? What would 5 NEW CLIENTS in the next 7 days do for your business? And what if you charged each of them 30% MORE than you had planned? Yes, you raised your rates AND asked for the sale. What if getting to those 5 sales, you connected with 12 leads that are interested but may need something lower priced or want to be on a waiting list (because your Beta Group is FILLED?) What if you also shared with your possible 141 commenters on a post and all followers that you're “sorry, but closed for this session” but have a waitlist for the next program, and share how to get on a notifications list. And you nurtured that list with a few quick wins between now and having something ready? Would that be okay? Well, let me tell you about how our WellPro member did it. After Thursday's hotseat session last week she went into action. By Friday she'd booked 3 consultations and sold 1, and had a maybe for the other. But let me tell you the details so you don't miss a thing!! 1. "Z" was going to wait, until she was ready and had created a course, probably, she said, in January. >> No, I suggested that these warm leads who responded to a post that they needed the support of a Menopause Specialist that she was taking couldn't "wait" to cool off. She needed to reach out now. 2. "Z" was set to charge $497 for a small beta group. >>I said add $200 to that. It's going to be a small group, they're going to get a LOT of individual attention. They need to pay for that much time with you. 3. She reached out to these social-only acquaintances and DM'd them asking if they'd like to meet. She booked 3 sessions in a day. She sold 1, got a maybe and a no, not right now. 4. Over the next 6 days, she booked more consults, and filled all 5 slots, making $3400+ for a course she hasn't built yet. **She was limited by the platform she's testing for this size group. She'll have the opportunity to show proof of concept, have testimonials to use for the actual launch, AND... know that the price point is very reasonable since she'll be able to show transformation. 5. "Z" is lit up excited. She doesn't just have 5 new clients in 7 days. She has momentum! How do you think that will boost her November and December sales? How Can You Too Get 5 New Clients in 7 Days (or BETTER!) I've been talking all month about the WELLPROs mastermind. In case you missed it, it's not too late. In fact, it's not too late to get in at the founder's rate but it will be!!! Here's how it works: Regularly the mastermind & mentorship is $79/month. The founder's rate is $49/month There is NO contract. It's month-to-month. I provide value, you stay, you pay monthly via subscription. If you find it doesn't serve you, give you clarity on pricing, asking, presenting offers, or planning your next promotion… then you simply give us 3 business days' notice to cancel. You have access to the library for as long as you're a member. So not only do you get opportunity to add a hot seat question (whether you're in bed fast asleep in Australia at 12 noon AZ on Thursdays or live), you get to catch up or review any sessions you've missed. PLUS, you have a CEU course every six months as an added perk. This is a collaboration of others AND coaching from a 0-to-6-figures a month coach. You hear what's working for others and ideas and get a team of women rooting for you. Priceless. You get the opportunity to declare out loud what you'll do and to report the following week what worked and didn't. You can see, if you take instant action, you will get to “yes.” Other success stories are coming. Some are Black Friday weekend based, others, about testing and research via social media. They're coming … just stay tuned. Better yet, what if you had a big win.. What would that look like? Are You Connected? On today's Summer Special, I am joined by Dr Louise Newson, a GP and renowned Menopause Specialist, author, podcast host and the founder of the Balance app. Louise is passionate about improving education about the perimenopause and menopause and improving awareness of safe prescribing of HRT to healthcare professionals. Women are increasingly discussing the forgetfulness, anxiety and suicidal thoughts they have experience as their hormones change in midlife. It's true that the link between menopause and depression is now sufficiently recognised and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence now recommends HRT as the first line of treatment for low mood or anxiety in menopausal women. Today, I speak to Louise all about mental health and emotional wellbeing in the perimenopause and menopause, particularly the psychological symptoms and ask her about how we can support our mental health during these changes.Find Louise:Website: https://www.newsonhealth.co.uk/Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-dr-louise-newson-podcast/id1459614845Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/menopause_doctor/?hl=enFollow Hurt to Healing on Instagram:@hurttohealingpodA big thank you our wonderful charity partner Shout. HRT is talked about a lot when it comes to menopause and it can be a really difficult decision whether or not it's right for you. In my opinion, HRT complements all the other things you're doing to manage your menopause; it's not a magic pill, although for some it literally can be a life saver. The most important thing you can do is GET INFORMED so that you can make the right choice for you.Don't rely on what you think you know or what someone else has told you, because you are unique and will have your own experience of menopause. What's right for your friend, mother, sister may not be right for you.So I was delighted this week to speak to HRT expert, Kate Organ, who is a British Menopause Society registered Menopause Specialist, founder & consultant pharmacist of The Menopause Specialists. As a consultant clinical pharmacist she has expert knowledge in the way that HRT works, how it is processed by the body and its risks & benefits. This week's episode will give you the facts and answer some of the questions you may have about HRT including:

There are dozens of ways for you to market your health coaching business here. Some are direct and others indirect. Indirectly marketing means you're not just sharing your freebie. That still feels a little like someone you've never met stalking you for a date. You have no reason or motivation to get a freebie (let alone, to those of you who are posting on social media your programs and hoping that people register from social media – that strategy unfortunately would go on the “20 ways to kill your organic marketing” list. Indirectly marketing your freebie means you're sharing it but leading with some other generous offer first. Did you know? We no longer require 7 touches before someone will know, like, and trust you – potentially even enough to give you an email, let alone buy from you – it takes about 21 today! Yes, 21 times(many say 28) in front of someone. And they are not seeing every post you painstakingly made on social media. People have lives. They don't wait for your next post, email, or video. So create, yes. Then share, send, and resend when they didn't open. Be purposeful, have a plan and it's then that these will get your wheels creative juices going! You can return to this over and over! It's not a checklist suggesting you need them all, but you do need number 1, then you need to give it wheels as many of the additional simple ways to market your health & fitness coaching business will. Create a Freebie If you don't have one you love, that works consistently, focus on this until you do. Where do you post it? Not just hidden on your website. In your blogs, podcasts, interviews, and on social posts in an organic not spammy way. Be sure that you don't make this mistake: make a freebie, and then leave it. Or this mistake: make a freebie and then make another and another. Stick with your freebie. Promote it, and drive traffic to it (in ways I'll share below as well as paid traffic depending on your budget). Watch your conversions every week. How many people actually opt in for it? If you create anything… that no one wants.. you've wasted time. So be sure you base what you make on what your customer wants. Keep tweaking until you know that the conversion rate (number of people who land on your freebie thank you page after being presented with your freebie) is high before you go and create another one. Not many things on this list will market your health & fitness coaching business the way a freebie will. It's going to be true for a long time. Pop Ups Add a pop up on your website to the freebie. Examples of pop ups include: announcing something special, are you leaving/before you go, and did you forget? I'm including 3 images of pop-ups in the notes here that may give you ideas. And yes, they can be annoying. But they do work. Create content that lives forever: Start a Blog Write an Article or post for someone else. Create a Video Start a Podcast. Every time you post a new blog (relevant), video, or podcast, insert a ‘native' CTA for the freebie and then create a slice of that content and share it on at least 5 platforms with a graphic. Haven't been doing this and have tons of content (a book? Blog or podcast?)? You can go back and do this for every one of them! Continue to share them once created over and over again. This is really an indirect share of your freebie. You've got gold, now you just need to harvest it! The gold here is that as long as the content is still relevant, you can and should drive traffic to it regularly. Examples of These Simple Ways to Market your health & fitness coaching business in Action: I have a knee strengthening video on YouTube. It has millions of views. In it there are 5 or 6 exercises. I can and should share ONE of them in a short video post and tell them that to get the rest of the exercises they can watch the full-length video here…xxxx. I can also share a study about omega 3 and inflammation in knees (I have in my arsenal) and suggest if they want other ways to exercise for relief... they watch the video. So while I'm sharing a free social post to another free full length video... in order to finally give them an option to “opt in” and subscribe to my email list with another “freebie” – it often takes that kind of chain reaction to prove the trust factor to a new prospect. (85% of consumers make a slower decision than the 15% of us who may jump in) Got tons of blogs? Create a book using them. Each blog can be a chapter. In every chapter link to or send to the free resources in your freebie. The book itself can be your freebie. Using a free book with shipping or a free pdf version with a small fee. (Often called a “trip wire” based on the theory that buyers of a small item are usually the best buyers for something more). Be a Guest. Every time you're a guest on someone's stage, podcast, or summit, share your freebie, with a juicy description. It's not a pdf, it's a solution to a big problem your audience has. Ask for a Referral current members to give you a paid client. Ask ONE person for one referral. Don't send some kind of a broadcast to a group of people expecting someone to step up. What happens when you do that in a room? Everyone believes someone else will but feels no obligation or inspiration to do so. Tell them how to do it in a specific way and reward them both. Share success stories/ testimonials. When you do this, how you get your testimonials matters. It's not an accident. There are questions you absolutely want to ask and those that you don't. Want help collecting testimonials? Sponsor an event. Events are always looking for business partners who then get their name on the t-shirt, or the advertisement, or get to talk at the event. Explore how much it would be and the visibility you would have. What this looks like: I sponsored an event for $12500. I was a keynote speaker, had a vendor booth, and gave a workout one morning before sessions. I paid for my sponsor multiple times over in the revenue from new clients and students that continue to be a part of programs today. So don't dismiss these paid opportunities to be in front of a dream live audience. They may be a far better investment than paying for Facebook or Google ads to strangers. Brand It Consider putting your own brand name and logo on a t-shirt. Then wear it every time you're on camera. Strategically you want to make sure placement of the logo is clear and legible and probably higher up than you might ordinarily have it on a t-shirt. I was on with a colleague recently and watched a replay clip of us he shared. In it, he had on his branded shirt, and while I was in brand colors, he was a billboard in his shirt, as well as in the graphics framing the clip that was used for social media. Brilliant! I go to the gym or to run errands regularly wearing a visor. Why wouldn't I get branded visors made? In fact, I have one. There are dozens of ways you can apply this. Be a Vendor Be a vendor with a booth at a health fair or women's event/kids' event (where would your customer be?) There's a fee but if it's your specific demographic it's probably a lot better way to spend that money than spend the same on Facebook ads. Host a program for your (or other) church Present at Women's Meetings Contact women's organizations in the late spring/early summer about doing a program for them next year. This is when many organizations wrap up for the summer, new officers are installed, and t he new Vice President or Education chair has the task of deciding the programs for the next calendar year before fall. Sometimes organizations -specifically women's philanthropic organizations – have multiple divisions in the same town/city. In the college town I lived for 30 years there were 20 unique subdivisions and I presented at more than half over the years. Market Your Health & Fitness Business with Radio Exposure Contact the local radio station about a month or day – sleep awareness month, osteoporosis day – and offer to provide tips and do a talk show or be interviewed with their host. When you're booked, promote promote, promote. After you're on, get the recording, send it out and promote, promote, promote. Use that station's logo on your site in an “as seen on.” Be Seen on TV Contact the local TV station and pitch a newsworthy story. Use statistics, and tie it to their largest audience. You'll need to do research on the kind of stories they do, the kind of guests they host, as well as know key soundbites that you can give them. They're busy. Make their job easy by providing the news, why it's relevant, timely and why you're the expert. Provide your contact info and 4 questions you can answer. Call, email, and keep asking to talk to the producer until you get an answer. Once you're booked, do a good job and you'll be asked back. Double your Reach Create a Buddy Pass**. If you already have clients joining your programs, whether your paid or your freebies, give them a buddy pass to share with a friend for 50% off. You'll want to tie this to some kind of reward for the one who shares it. She wants to save! So… you can do this for a special product right off the bat, a buy 1, get the second 50% off and say instead of each option costing $50 the two can join for $75. Make Gift Giving Easy Mother's Day, Christmas, Birthdays… are all perfect opportunities for gift certificates, or special promotions. But… don't stop there. It's not really special for you to say, “Spend your gift money here.” Instead sweeten the pot. Include a package they can wrap up: send an actual book (not a pdf), a journal, a set of bands, a t-shirt, sweat towel, small ball, etc. Make it something you'll incorporate into your workouts or coaching. Then include a $10 off or $50 off a next step program for the gift recipient too. So you're not just getting a new client sale, you're increasing the chance they'll make a second purchase and planting that seed for them too. **About buddy passes and gift giving ease: These are ways to market your health & fitness business… as long as you talk about them! And if your ideal target market is following you, invite them to share the news with their gift-buyer! Or Be sure you know WHO you're talking to when you post or email… in the gift case you'd potentially be targeting a partner or daughter or son. You have to give that some thought. Attend Training with Other Business Owners The networking with other business owners that you do alone can be worth the cost of attending. This could be as small as attending your Chamber of Commerce business networking breakfast once a month. But it can today be virtual and if your business is virtual, even better. Yesterday in fact, on day one of a two-day training on business skills (yes, even after marketing fitness for 35 years I still invest in learning and getting coached myself). In our small group, we had a chance to hear each other and everyone in my group needed what I have. When you have your radar open to every situation you're in, there is a potential to meet others who need your services, it can happen organically. Even if not them, their wives, or moms or daughters or a corporate presentation could be waiting for you. There you are! All the best in 2023! Join your host, Shelly Burns, and her guest, Anna Araujo. Anna is a nutritionist with over 25 years of experience in clinical practice. She holds two science degrees in nutrition from Michigan State University, and she's also a Menopause Specialist with the International Menopause Society. Anna is the owner of Perimenopause Health, providing coaching and educational services to women over 40 so they can become lean, strong, nourished, and confident during perimenopause and beyond. At age 43, she was caught by the perimenopause "storm" where she suddenly found herself 15 lbs heavier, extremely fatigued, and anxious. Since then, she has dedicated her time and work to researching perimenopause and acquiring training with reputable organizations such as the International Menopause Society (IMS) and the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) and through mentors like Dr. Stacy Sims, who specializes in female physiology. Anna is 50 years old and started lifting heavy weights and rock climbing at age 45. She changed her own nutrition to support her changing physiology, and she believes it's never too late for women to start a healthy, sustainable, balanced lifestyle without restrictive diets and stressful regimens. Her mission is to guide women into achieving their goals by nourishing their bodies appropriately so they can work with their changing physiology, not against it. I know the title of the podcast might seems a bit confronting but I believe it's important to understand that there is a lot to unpack when it comes to menopause, weight gain in menopause and overall women's health for longevity. My guest is Carys Sonnenberg, a NHS GP and Women's Health and Menopause Specialist. She is also the Founder of an online resource, Rowena Health, which provides facts and information for women in menopause. What is metabolic syndrome? What is insulin resistance? What is the relationship to menopause? How does metabolic syndrome impact on health and longevity? Hot flushes, night sweats, weight gain. If you're going through menopause, these 3 things are at the forefront of your mind, at least a few times a day. 85% of women experience sleep disrupting hot flushes or night sweats during menopause. A decline in estrogen causes these symptoms while decreasing progesterone levels also affect the body's production of melatonin (AKA the sleep hormone). So how can you get good quality sleep as your body makes these hormonal change? On this episode of The Goodnight Show, Shea is joined by Dr Joanna Sharp, a Menopause Specialist and online practitioner for Juniper, to discuss all things sleep and menopause! Shea and Joanna discuss why women have difficulty sleeping during menopause, how a lack of sleep can worsen menopause symptoms in a vicious cycle, and the burning question: How to sleep better through menopause! Coaching midlife clients brings a new set of hormones, conditions, injuries, lifestyle habit challenges and stressors. You should have an equally robust toolbox expansion to go with it. Consider this one episode that will help. In our Flipping 50 Menopause Specialist course there is a module dedicated to one of the topics we discuss today. You'll hear my guest expert on adaptogens discuss just how you can find ways to inform your clients, support them through application, and in doing so, increase your value as a coach. I'm curious: have you tried adaptogens? I've shared details about benefits of maca - and the difference in the quality and mysterious 11 strains that may or may not help a woman in previous Flipping 50 podcasts. I'll link to that as well as to the brand that I recommend for clinical grade maca when someone truly wants to use an amount proven to support their needs. Others include ashwaganda, rhodiola, and we'll talk about more on this and the other podcast. When you or your clients are looking for natural, this is a great solution! Dr Fatima Khan is a highly skilled Peri-Menopause and Menopause Specialist with a holistic approach to women's physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. Menopause is a biological reality that all women face, but we don't have to surrender to it. Think of menopause as a detour, rather than a decline. That's why I brought on Dr. Carla DiGirolamo for this week's episode. Carla is a Fitness and Nutrition coach in addition to her work as a Board-Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist and Menopause Specialist. Today we talk about the ins and outs of hormone changes as we get older, and the best ways fuel, train, and take care of ourselves as our bodies change. Menopause isn't a deficiency, it's a part of life. It's time we learned to love and take care of our bodies, instead of hiding them away. The role of the allied health care professional in a person's journey through perimenopausal and menopausal treatment can prove essential. On this episode of the Newson Health Menopause Society podcast, host Lauren Redfern talks to in house Newson Health Pharmacist and Menopause Specialist Hayley Berry. Together, Lauren and Hayley pick apart the important position of the pharmacist and how it relates to a person's menopausal journey. The episode explores the ways in which pharmacists and other allied health care professionals can upskill themselves in order to feel confident consulting on the perimenopause and menopause. It provides advice on how to access appropriate resources, tools, and education, including when to feel assured signposting to another service. Recognising the very important part played by the allied healthcare professional beyond the clinic, Hayley helps to demystify the process of learning, and provides valuable insight into how best to empower patients. Hayley is an experienced prescribing pharmacist with a background in community pharmacy and now works in both general practice and education and training. She has a keen interest in women's health including contraception, sexual health and the menopause and is currently working remotely in conjunction with the team at Newson Health. In this episode of the NHMS podcast, host Lauren Redfern is joined by Menopause Specialist Dr Sarah Ball to discuss the ways in which the perimenopause and menopause may be missed in patients with other long-standing health conditions. Drawing upon her own experience as a GP, Sarah outlines how a commitment to asking simple and straightforward questions can prove important in helping to distinguish between the re-emergence of an existing condition, and the onset of perimenopause and menopause. Using a number of interesting examples, this episode urges clinicians to keep menopause on their minds, even in instances where it seems an unlikely culprit. Dr Sarah Ball is a GP and Menopause Specialist currently consulting as part of the Newson Health team. Dr Ball has extensive experience in working with perimenopausal and menopausal patients. She finds the process of empowering women to understand their menopause journey and access appropriate care and treatment highly rewarding. It is astonishing to think how badly educated we all are about such an important topic; how much misinformation is out there and how understudied women's health really is. "Menopause is a huge cause of osteoporosis, dementia and heart disease… and the most common cause of death in women is… dementia and heart disease!”Since our episode with Dr Shahzadi Harper on perimenopause we realised we needed to find out more, especially about the questions around hormone replacement therapy (HRT). So, we decided to dig deeper and talk to “the leading menopause specialist,” according to The Telegraph, Dr Louise Newson.Dr Louise Newson is Founder of Balance App, the world's biggest repository of evidence-based and medically approved menopause information. Dr Newson is a trailblazer when it comes to empowering women in making informed decisions to benefit their health and wellness. I've wanted to do this podcast for quite some time and have been quietly searching for a Doctor who is a menopause specialist and who takes a holistic and systemic view of the Midlife and Menopause transition. I looked at practitioners all over the world and found Dr Fatima Khan who funnily enough works about 2.5kms from my house!Fatima is a highly skilled Peri-Menopause and Menopause Specialist with a holistic approach to women's physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. She completed her medical training in the United Kingdom from Imperial College London in 2007 achieving a Bachelor in Medicine and Bachelor in Surgery. She also achieved a Bachelor in Science in Pharmacology and Therapeutics with publication of her research. I asked Fatima to not only talk about HRT and explain what it is, its history and the messaging around it, but also to talk about Estrogen and the role it takes up in our female bodies beyond our menstrual cycles and fertility. This is because Estrogen plays an important role in supporting the functioning of a number of our body's systems. Additionally I asked her to talk about how the decline in estrogen and progesterone impacts on other hormones in our body.Fatima has given us a multi-faceted, in depth, explanation of HRT and our hormonal health. In this podcast you will learn:- The link between estrogen and our mental health;- The impact of estrogen decline on our metabolic health, cardiovascular health, cellular health, and our bone health;- The lifestyle factors you need to consider when you are in your perimenopause transition;- A thorough understanding of Hormone Replacement Therapy and the history of it, the clinical trials that have occurred in our recent past that have impacted our perceptions of HRT;- And why taking a multi-faceted view of your health and well-being is important in the menopause transition. You can find Fatima on Instagram at @menopausespecialist or on her work website www.agoracentre.com.au. I encourage you to follow Fatima on instagram if you use it, she has some excellent posts that are all evidence based. I think it is incredibly important to understand the many facets of the menopause transition and that includes Hormone Replacement Therapy. Broad knowledge and understanding of your health, in mind, body and spirit, gives you information, options, discernment and choice. It empowers you to be creative in driving you life from a desire based perspective.

In this episode, I'm focusing on the Cinderella of the menopause. In recent years, we've become a bit more confident about discussing our menopause – some women will mention their hot flushes without turning a hair and the common mental health symptoms such as anxiety and mood swings have also started to come out of the closet, which is a great thing, but we're still not quite ready to be open about the vaginal symptoms. So now we're going to shine the spotlight on vaginal dryness which can be a huge issue for many women through the menopause and beyond. To help us, I've turned to one of the most clinically experienced menopause specialists in the UK. Kathy Abernethy has been a leading light in the field of women's health and the menopause for over 30 years which makes her the perfect person to advise us on this tricky topic. A registered British Menopause Society Menopause Specialist with extensive clinical experience, Kathy has consistently championed women's health and transformed the lives of hundreds of women with her clinical advice and support. There is no better person to give us the lowdown on how to manage vaginal dryness, so tune in to find out what she's got to say. We discuss moisturisers & lubricants, and why and how to use them. Kathy explains exactly why vaginal scrubs are best avoided, and she's reassuring and insightful on the subject of locally applied oestrogen. We also talk about the long-term importance of caring for the vagina to avoid the knock-on problems of bladder and urinary tract infections, which are common ongoing issues for women post-menopause. Throw in a bit of nutrition advice from me and you've got an all-round approach to managing vaginal health in this podcast! Kathy leads a busy multidisciplinary NHS menopause clinic in London, as well as her own private clinic in southwest London. She is also the director of menopause services at Peppy health, a digital health company, former chair of the British Menopause Society and the author of “Menopause: The One Stop Guide”. She's full of so much brilliant, expert advice in this episode that I think you'll feel much more confident about tackling any issues you might have around vaginal dryness, so that you can get the support that you need. Isn't it time to give your vagina a bit of love?If you've enjoyed this episode, please leave a 5-star rating and a review on Apple Podcasts or whichever platform you listen on, as it really helps to spread the word, so that new listeners can find the show. Because every woman deserves to have a happy menopause.

Episode Notes Special Covid-19 Resources for Job Hunters and Working-From-Home Professionals Subscribe to Reset your Career Men who are listening to this podcast (and reading this blog), well done you! I'm delighted that despite the title you are sticking around. This interview will be invaluable if you have a wife, daughter, mother, best friend, work colleague and so on. It will help you understand and support the women in your life. I'm sending you a virtual “high five”! This is part 1 or a 2-part interview with Dr Fatima Khan, a highly skilled Menopause Specialist with a holistic approach to women's physical, emotional and mental well-being. Fatima is passionate about women's health. She completed a Diploma at the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists in the UK; she has an Advanced Menopause Certification accredited from the British Menopausal Society and Faculty of Reproductive and Sexual Health. Her specializations were achieved after her extensive training as a doctor at Kings College London, which is well recognized as a referral center for menopausal women with complex medical problems. But that's not all, Fatima has also undertaken further training in the USA on optimizing hormonal health for anti-ageing and longevity. She has recently moved to Australia, and is now a member of the AGORA Medical Specialist Centre and Medical Education team, based in Melbourne. There, she sees patients and teaches GPs and Registrars in range of women's issues. At the time this episode goes live, as we are in lockdown mode due to COVID-19, the Australian Government has enabled doctors to see patients remotely via telehealth. I myself did that yesterday, I had my regular specialist appointment via telehealth and it went really smoothly. So this is a great opportunity, if you are based in Australia and would like to consult with Fatima, to book an appointment with her. I will list the contact details for Fatima, and other Agora Medical Clinic in the episode show notes. Agora has a strong focus on women, including obstetrics, gynecology, fertility and cosmetic medicine. After quite a few weeks of podcasts focusing squarely on COVID-19, this episode may sound very different indeed. Until I noticed an interesting trend. You see, I follow several private female blogs and private Facebook groups, and over the past few weeks as the anxiety over COVID-19 and its economic, social and health impact started unfolding, so did many very common issues women face: breakouts, hormonal imbalances, hot flushes, waking up at 3 am. Some tweets from women asking “who else is waking up at 3 am” had hundreds and hundreds of comments. I really like how Fatima addressed the hormonal as well as the stress levels we currently have in our day to day lives. She touches on both, weaves them together as well as addresses them separately, which for me was really educational. Like many women, as I aged, I felt more anxious and fatigued, perhaps due to the many things we worry about and things we have to do. I experienced lack of concentration, sleeplessness and mild bouts of depression every now and then, perhaps due to the many roles in life that I've had to juggle from being mother, a leader in the work place, a wife and all the responsibilities that come with it all. In hindsight, I am 100% certain that my hormones have at times helped me pull through, and at times got in the way and really negatively impacted my career, possibly since my late 30s. All the topics Fatima will describe in her interview, I can mark a tick next to all of them: forgetfulness, extreme headaches, weight gain, mood swings. Fatima's biggest concern and goal is to support ambitious corporate women to continue to pursue their careers and not feel like they need to give up on anything because they can't control their perimenopausal symptoms, or any hormonal fluctuations they may be experiencing. Her goal is to treat and empower women, so they can fully embrace their career. I hope you enjoyed this first half of the interview. In Part 2 we are going to look at actions: what can we actually do to improve our well-being? Step by step tips and advice from Fatima for women of different ages. So, don't forget to subscribe to my Reset Your Career Community and I will send Part 2 to you next week. Here are some of the key takeaways from Part 1 of our interview: Starting in our mid-thirties, our progesterone level goes down. Progesterone is not only a fertility hormone but our calming hormone, so it can result in more anxiety related symptoms where we get more emotional. Early to mid-forties, estrogen level goes down as well, period becomes shorter or longer. All the things we felt from mid-thirties get exaggerated by this age. About depression, true depression is having a low mood for six weeks. We will find that after our period we feel so much better, and so this depressive feeling we have prior is because of the low level of hormones. For the sleep problems we have, it can be due to decline in estrogen and progesterone, and we have to fix it by getting the correct hormones to replace the deficiency. But for majority of the people, it's because we just don't have a good sleep hygiene. Solution: Write a journal. Write your thoughts, your feelings, what you are grateful for that day, what the winds of the day, what to improve in terms of self-development, and then set intentions for the next day, but in relation to their menstrual cycle. Now you can change your routine and listen to your body 7 to 10 days prior menstruation with the help of this journal. Changes can be: Keep your schedule lighter and not over commit to work. Avoid doing intense workouts, instead you can do yoga, Pilates, or something similar that is more calming. Minimize caffeine intake, take green tea instead. Have a sleep hygiene of going to bed at 9pm with all gadgets switched off. Avoid processed foods and go for more green vegetables. Eat nutrient rich food, not energy dense food. Keep small snacks so as not to have big sugar slumps. Supplements are important: powdered magnesium, vitamin B, vitamin C, Vitex, Iron supplement, Fish oil Recognize the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, there are links below you can check. And consult a specialist to be able to tailor fit for you the solutions depending on your conditions. Please consult your doctor or see a specialist before taking any medication or supplement. Special Covid-19 Resources for Job Hunters and Working-From-Home Professionals Subscribe to Reset your Career This is part 2 of a 2-part interview with Dr Fatima Khan, a Menopause Specialist, discussing how menopause and hormonal imbalances affect women's career from as early as mid 30s. I go into detail about Fatima's training in my introduction on part 1, so please listen to that episode first (Ep.26) to learn more about her background, and most importantly, to listen to her introduction to the issues we will be unpacking in this second half of our discussion. After quite a few weeks of podcasts focusing squarely on COVID-19, the interview with Fatima turned out to be an absolute winner. Downloads have been massive, so thank you so much to everyone who has been listening, and I've also received calls, emails and messages of support. I love it when this happens: when I take somewhat of a risk – frankly I wasn't sure if it was the right time to releasing an episode about menopause during a covid pandemic! – but it seems you liked it! It shows we are in tune with each other. And thank you for giving me the feedback. Good or bad, it's important that we continue to communicate, so the episodes are always interesting and something you look forward to. And talking about feedback, I'd really appreciate if you could take a moment and leave this podcast a review on iTunes. iTunes reviews are super important for searchability of podcast episodes and shows. It's what makes a podcast popular and easy to find for others around the globe who may be experiencing the same issues you are, and would really benefit from listening. So please, pay it forward. Give it a 5-star rating and write a review as well. It would mean the world to me, and would help a fellow job hunter. You may not know this, but we have listeners from all over the world. Less then half of my listeners are from Australia, where I reside. The rest is spread out on all corners of the globe, from Africa to the Caribbean Islands, Europe to Asia. It's truly fascinating to get the statistics. It shows that career planning and job hunting are truly universal topics and, despite a few regional and cultural adjustments which I'm hoping you, the listener, know you'd need to make, there is a whole lot of techniques and strategies that are universal. The way to give a 5-star rating and review on iTunes is to scroll to the bottom of podcast link, tap to rate with five stars, and select “Write a Review”. From your desktop you can also do it by following a link in the show notes. Click here to start make it happen. They include the podcasts that are most relevant for our times, the live coaching sessions, additional articles and specially curated links to help you keep on top of what is important to know, as a corporate professional, as we prepare ourselves for future job interviews and adjust our career plans. In this part 2 of the interview with Dr Fatima Khan, we talk about the stress that comes from juggling career and family life, from deciding when/if to have kids, and considering if you will be able to cope with it all. It's palpable how much Fatima is concerned about women's wellbeing and her concern about how stress and anxiety is impacting not only our career progression, but our overall health. Fatima worries that right when we reach the career level that we aspire, we encounter the stigma of women not being effective leaders or decision makers. Her goal is to ensure hormonal inbalances are not affecting women at this time, that they are under control so women feel in control. I interviewed Fatima at the very beginning of covid, so also I had the opportunity to ask her about the anxiety brought about by the lockdown and how it can impact us as well. Below is a list we prepared for you to help you maintain your wellbeing during these challenging times. Dr Fatima Khan's top advice for women's wellbeing: Journaling: as discussed last week, this is the main framework suggested by Dr Khan. It helps bring awareness and consciousness on what is happening to our body before and after our menstruation. With the help of your doctor, take the proper supplements to help our hormones. Fatima mentions a few for as examples and for educational purposes: magnesium powder, fish oil, vitamin B, iron supplement, 1000 mg of liposomal vitamin C. If you're finding you're getting a bit sick, you can take vitamin C up to three times a day. Seven to ten days before your period, change your workout routine into more calming rehabilitative workouts. Find purpose and meaning through connection and helping other people. It can be doing some volunteer work that is very helpful these days, or simply buying someone's groceries. This will give us a sense of fulfillment and contentment, something outside of ourselves. Practice the act of Kindness: We have talked about taking care of our physical, emotional and mental well-being. Kindness is almost contagious when you try and do things for other people, without thinking of gain for our self and actually is food for the soul. Practice self-reflection: Self-reflection is one of the most fundamental things to do, because when we self-reflect, we get a better perspective of what we want to do or what we can change. And this will help us immensely in our careers as well. In this time of pandemic, it is important to know that feeling anxious is a normal reaction of our body. Stop listening to the news all the time. Only look at the news once a day, and go back to your normal routine. Do the things you would normally do. Do some activities that you love to take your mind off things and let you relax such as dancing, cooking, baking and puzzles. Legos are fantastic for mindfulness. Follow a good sleep hygiene. Refer to last week's interview show notes. Finally, it is important to have compassion, not just in this time of pandemic, but also in our careers. We don't know what each person is going through, and it helps to sometimes put ourselves in their feet. Don't forget to be aware of symptoms and signs of perimenopause and menopause and get the proper treatment. See the links below.
