Steven Hawley is an environmental journalist who writes about rivers, dams, and the ecological impacts they have on salmonids in the American West. He is the author of Cracked: The Future of Dams in a Hot, Chaotic World (2023), Recovering a Lost River (2011), and the writer and co-producer of an award-winning documentary, Dammed to Extinction (2019). In this 100th episode of Nature Revisited, Steven walks us through the history of extensive, misguided dam building in the United States and the resulting environmental, economic, and human repercussions. Citing startling examples, he explains how the costs of maintaining a sprawling water storage system in an increasingly arid world under the ravages of climate chaos is well beyond the benefits furnished. Sorry for reuploading an older story but recently things have been fairly hectic. We had to take one of our dogs to the emergency vet following him having trouble walking. We were there for about 6 hours before they finally determined he has a herniated disc. He'll be on pain meds and anti-inflammatory for about 6 weeks. We're hoping he can recover quick, but as you'd imagine, we've been stressed. Thanks for understanding!! Will Rayne: https://www.reddit.com/r/WillRayne/ https://www.youtube.com/@thelastlodge

Step into the rich and vibrant garden of Puritan wisdom with Charles Spurgeon, one of the most beloved preachers and authors in recent Christian history. In Flowers from a Puritan's Garden, Spurgeon prayerfully selects and expands upon the profound insights and analogies gleaned from Thomas Manton's sermons. Whether you are a long-time admirer of Puritan writings or new to their influence, Flowers from a Puritan's Garden offers a refreshing and spiritually nourishing read. Perfect for daily devotions, personal study, or as a gift to those seeking encouragement in their Christian journey, this book will help readers to see the beauty of God's truth as it applies to our lives. Discover the timeless beauty of following Christ through the eyes of one of history's greatest preachers, and allow the truths in these pages to blossom in your heart. About the Author Charles Haddon (C. H.) Spurgeon (1834-1892) was a British Baptist preacher. He started preaching at age 16 and quickly became famous. He is still known as the “Prince of Preachers” and frequently had more than 10,000 people present to hear him preach at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. His sermons were printed in newspapers, translated into many languages, and published in many books.

This week, we share a short story by Mexican author Laia Jufresa, translated by Sophie Hughes, that imagines the chaos of a world ravaged and divided by climate change. In “Be Dammed,” thousands of climate refugees find themselves forming settlements on boats as they wait endlessly to cross a heavily guarded border in pursuit of safety. One woman, tasked with holding prayers for their salvation, negotiates the entanglement of faith and politics as she considers who, or what, truly has the power to change their circumstances. For thousands of years, Missoula's Rattlesnake Creek supported important spawning populations of bull trout, which would move upstream from the Clark Fork River each fall. But in 1901, the Rattlesnake Creek Dam blocked the spawning fish. Over a century later, in 2020, the City of Missoula removed the now-obsolete dam. This story is about a stream coming back to life, its fish, and the Watershed Education Network - a Missoula-based nonprofit and its avid volunteers who are documenting the stream as it changes.

Wisdom Chapter 12
In ancient times, people started building bridges to gain passage over various obstacles, like valleys or bodies of water. From that point on; the knowledge on how to build bridges started spreading from area to area, but so did the lore about the monsters and ghosts that made these places their own. A team of Israeli water experts is in South Africa to meet various municipalities, hoping to share world-leading technology that could help turn around the country's ailing water infrastructure. South Africa is a water-stressed country with some bulk infrastructure as old as 80 years. Dr Clive Lipchin is heading the team of Israeli academics and spoke as part of a panel in Johannesburg. Lipchin is positive that their overtures to assist South Africa won't be undermined or dismissed by politics, as an increasingly fractious relationship persists between the two countries. The guest for today's episode is author and creative writer, Chris Kalman. A storyteller at heart, Chris's writing has landed him in the pages of Outside and Climbing Magazine with stories that make you think about both sides of the climbing coin—the good and the bad. He's also been featured on a number of audio productions too: Dirtbag Diaries, The Firn Line, and, of course, The Cutting Edge, where he plays host himself. Chris also co-authored the guidebook for Index, Washington and has authored two fictional climbing books that take the reader on a powerful emotional journey through the ups and downs of climbing. Chris has a particular fondness for the Cochamo Valley in South America. The pristine granite walls there have earned it the nickname “Yosemite Valley of South America.” Cochamo has gained more well-deserved exposure in climbing media due its pristine nature and world class landscape, but with more notoriety and exposure comes increased impacts. But impacts also present an opportunity to drive stewardship efforts and inspire the protection of a place. Chris and Peter use Cochamo as an international example of the nexus between tourism and conservation and get into what Chris has done to help proactively manage impacts in Cochamo, while also keeping it available for people to climb on its stunning granite walls. 6:36 - Intro to Chris 12:57 - Authoring the Index guidebook 14:46 - The best worst trad climbing in the U.S. 18:24 - Experience working for the National Park Service 26:46 - “It's Time to Rethink Climbing on Devils Tower” 40:53 - Chris as an author 47:03 - “Dammed if You Don't” 1:01:07 - “We Haven't Messed It Up Yet” 1:06:25 - Preservation vs. conservation 1:07:47 - Friends of Cochamo 1:14:47 - Where you can find some of Chris' other work Chris' website: http://www.chriskalman.com/ Chris' Instagram: @chriswritekalman The Best Worst Trad Climbing in the U.S.: https://www.outdoorresearch.com/blog/lumpy-ridge-the-best-worst-trad-climbing-in-the-united-states Devils Tower article: https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/climbing/why-its-time-rethink-climbing-ban-devils-tower/ NPS info on the Devils Tower closure: https://www.nps.gov/deto/planyourvisit/currentclimbingclosures.htm Climbers- Honor the June Closure at Devils Tower: https://www.accessfund.org/news-and-events/news/climbers-honor-the-june-closure-at-devils-tower Patagonia Cochamo article: https://www.patagonia.com/stories/coming-to-bat-for-cochamo/story-71772.html As Above, So Below: http://www.chriskalman.com/books/as-above-so-below Dammed If You Don't: http://www.chriskalman.com/books/uf64nh7hgb6gurd3mtkwkdagckky5a

In this episode of Connecting the Docs: Unprocessed, host John Horan and oral history interns Michelle Witt and Madison Riley discuss the history of two dams and the lakes they created. The story of Fontana Dam and Lake as a tourist destination in western North Carolina is well documented, but this episode goes underneath the surface and uncovers the various towns and landmarks that were flooded when the dam was built. In much the same way, Jordan Dam and Lake changed the landscape of Chatham County. It took decades to build, and yet, much less is written and known about this story. In addition to discussing the dams, lakes, and what happened to towns like Japan and Seaforth, this episode explores how archivists and historians do their research to tell stories. It gives some tips on the best ways to interact with the repository at the State Archives and beyond. I, Kaeley Pruitt-Hamm of KPH & The Canary Collective, get to speak with Steve Hawley, co-creator of the documentary "Dammed to Extinction," about how we can advocate for justice for orca whales, salmon, and Indigenous communities by calling for the removal of the four lower Snake river dams. We also discuss the parallels between human and orca whale health challenges. You can take action in a fun and easy way! Take a selfie with orca art, write a hand-written letter, or dance/sing/play along to a song for a virtual Canary Choir and Orca-stra and post, tag, and mail to public officials who are deciding on whether or not to remove the dams - officials like Governor Jay Inslee and Senator Patty Murray. Visit http://www.canarycollective.org/canary-choir-and-orca-stra.html for instructions on how you can take action! In this episode of The Firn Line, I check in with author and climber, Chris Kalman. I first met Chris after reading his excellent book, As Above So Below and since then we've stayed in touch, connected through climbing and creativity. So I was excited when Chris announced a Kickstarter to help finish up his new novella, Dammed if you don't. Dammed If You Don't tells the story of a deeply-conflicted photographer who tries to save Lahuenco_—_a remote valley in Patagonian Chile—by showing the world how beautiful it is. But in showing the world how beautiful it is, he inadvertently puts Lahuenco in peril—including a rare and mysterious salamander whose sudden appearance there forces the scientific community to rethink its understanding of evolutionary biology, and possibly human history itself. Chris and I recently caught up to talk about the his creative process, some philosophical discussions about the role of conservation in the outdoor community, as well as some fun talk - just about climbing. So I hope you enjoy our conversation.Links:Dammed If You Don'tThe Firn LinePatreonEvan Phillips MusicSponsors:The Hoarding MarmotAlaska Rock Gym

«Lightning Horse». «The Wind In The Willows». «Cigar Man». «Dammed». The Friday Edition of A&G starts with a hyperventilating Jack Armstrong, who's overwhelmed by the quantity of news stories to talk about! McMaster/Bolton, Trump/McDougal, McDonald's/Trump. It's all happening!
Dams clog rivers and streams all over New England. Environmentalists want to take many of them down to improve habitat for fish, but some entrepreneurs want to put them back to work doing their original jobs: making power. Plus, with the Trump Administration’s voter fraud commission meeting in New Hampshire this week, we revisit our conversation about the wacky political world of the Granite State. And, we take trips to two places that are trying to attract tourists: the factory site of a controversial gun magnate, and a mythical wonderland that takes shape just over the border in Québec. Built about 150 years ago, Mill Pond Dam in Colchester, Vt., is currently breached, but still creating a small swamp upstream. Photo by Kathleen Masterson for VPR What Do You Do With an Old Dam? The rivers and streams of New England are littered with thousands of dams. Many of them were used to produce the energy that sparked industry, but they’re now doing little more than than clogging waterways. Conservationists looking to restore the health of rivers are often met with political and emotional resistance when they try to remove large dams. So some are turning their attention to smaller, privately owned ones. Vermont Public Radio’s Kathleen Masterson took a closer look. Nick Cabral is a co-founder of Goose River Hydro in Belfast, Maine But not everyone’s ready to tear down old New England dams. In central Maine, a couple of young entrepreneurs sees potential in old dams in the form of renewable energy and profit. Maine Public Radio’s Fred Bever has more. Vote First or Die Voters cast ballots in Windham, New Hampshire. Photo by Allegra Boverman for NHPR. Even by New Hampshire's high standards, this was a pretty big week in politics. President Trump's controversial voter fraud commission met in Manchester, where one of the commission's members, long-time New Hampshire secretary of state Bill Gardner, faced criticism from all four members of the state's congressional delegation. Gardner used the occasion of the meeting to rebuke Kris Kobach, the Kansas Secretary of State, for his op-ed on Brietbart.com, suggesting widespread voter fraud in the 2016 New Hampshire election. It's a claim that FactCheck.org called “bogus.” Meanwhile, a state judge ruled against a provision in a new voter law that would have subjected voters to a possible fine or jail time if they failed to submit residency paperwork in a timely fashion. The judge wrote that the provision was a “very serious deterrent” to the right to vote. That New Hampshire's elections have come under scrutiny is something that grates at state residents. The Granite State takes pride in the way it conducts its elections, with no institution more sacred than its first-in-the-nation primary. Scott Conroy is a long-time political reporter, who grew up in neighboring Massachusetts, and who became enamored with New Hampshire's political culture while covering presidential candidates criss-crossing the state. His book is Vote First or Die: The New Hampshire Primary: Americas Discerning, Magnificent, and Absurd Road to the White House. NEXT caught up with Conroy earlier this year. Building a National Park Based on Hartford History Sparks Pride, and Discomfort Unlike New Hampshire, Connecticut has long suffered from a kind of civic inferiority complex. The state is stuck between Boston and New York, but far more congested than scenic New England destinations to the north. Student reporters Nicole Ellis (left) and Madyson Frame pose at Samuel Colt’s statue in Hartford’s Colt Park, with historian Bill Hosley. Photo by Sam Hockaday And then there are the money problems. It's one of the richest states in the nation, but the state budget is billions in the hole. And Hartford, the state’s capital, struggles with a perception that it has too much crime and not enough to do. But something big is on the horizon. A new national park, set to open in the next few years, will tell the story of one of the city's most important industrial leaders. Coltsville National Historical Park will be built on land that once belonged to firearms manufacturer Samuel Colt, and will include parts of the historic Colt factory complex. Colt had an outsized influence on Hartford and was a major player in the Industrial Revolution. But is his a history worth honoring? Madyson Frame, a recent graduate of Hartford's Journalism and Media Academy, reports. Lighting Up the Forest Flips the Switch on a Small Town A stroll through Foresta Lumina includes some sparkly, stunningly lit sections of forest. Photo by Chris Jensen While Hartford dreams about creating a tourist attraction from the ground up, Coaticook, Québec, which sits right on the Vermont border, pulled it off. Local officials took an unusual idea, made a $1 million gamble, and hit a tourism geyser: a high-tech enchanted woodland called Foresta Lumina. Reporter Chris Jensen, with the New Hampshire Center for Public Interest Journalism, went to see for himself. Below: a video from the Creators Project goes behind the scenes at Foresta Lumina.
