Siedah Garrett comes to the music industry “table” with an impressive list of accomplishments. In addition to her work as a recording artist, session/ tour singer, and staff songwriter for numerous Quincy Jones projects which include her iconic composition “Man In The Mirror” for Michael Jackson, she sang the duet (“I Just Can't Stop Loving You”) with Michael, toured with Sergio Mendez and Madonna, fronted pop group The Brand New Heavies, was nominated for an Oscar and won a Grammy for her song “Love You I Do” for the movie version of Dreamgirls. Still, she had time to release several solo projects, one of which was the theme song (Ever Changing Times) from the hit Diane Keaton film, Baby Boom, still continuing as a working session singer and voiceover artist. You have to hear the stories and experiences. They are truly one of a kind. Listen, laugh out loud, and learn. This is Siedah Garrett.

The Album: The Dreamgirls soundtrack (2006) Former LA Times Editor and Out Magazine's Director of Culture and Entertainment Tre'vell Anderson, joined us to talk Jennifer Hudson and the Dreamgirls OST. Dreamgirls won two Academy Awards - one for Best Sound Mixing, the other, Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Hudson's star-making portrayal of Effie White. The single disc-version of the soundtrack spent two weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album. One of the songs, "Love You I Do" won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture or Television. The soundtrack, a certified banger, and Tre'vell's personal heat rock, was certified platinum. A fan of Jennifer Hudson's since American Idol Season 3 (his favorite), the film and soundtrack resonated with him because of the all too familiar narrative of the most talented person in the room having to contend with implicit bias preventing them from living their best life. We talked about the glory of Jennifer's journey from losing American Idol to winning at the Oscars, the difference between singers and sangers, Detroit vs. Chicago as a backdrop for the film, and what it sounds like when a Cadillac commercial get's "Pat Booned" (an Oliver Wang original saying). Why did the film propel Jennifer Hudson to the stardom possibly meant for Beyonce (AT THAT TIME). Who knew Eddie Murphy had this sort of vocal range? Who's version of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" was better: the original J.H. or the new J.H.? Tre'vell helped us answer those questions and more! Siedah Garrett is best known as the co-writer, with Glen Ballard, of “Man in the Mirror,” a #1 worldwide pop hit recorded by Michael Jackson. The Southern California native launched her career with a group called Plush in the early 1980s before joining Deco, which was assembled by her mentor, legendary producer Quincy Jones. It was Jones who played “Man in the Mirror” for Michael Jackson. The King of Pop fell in love with the song and the voice on the demo tape. In addition to recording “Man in the Mirror,” Michael invited Siedah to be his duet partner on “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” which was released as the first single from the Bad album and hit #1 on the Billboard pop chart. Siedah would go on to co-write “Keep the Faith” on Jackson’s Dangerous album and join him as a featured vocalist on the Dangerous world tour. As a backing vocalist, Siedah can be heard on recordings by Madonna, Sarah Vaughan, Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer, Natalie Cole, Santana, Jessica Simpson, and others. As a featured artist she’s scored hits such as the chart-topping R&B duet “Don’t Look Any Further” with former Temptation Dennis Edwards and her solo Top 20 R&B single “K.I.S.S.I.N.G.” Beyond her work with Michael Jackson, highlights from Siedah’s songwriting catalog include “Sometimes,” a Top 20 R&B hit for The Brand New Heavies, of which she was also a member, as well as five songs on Quincy Jones’s multi-Grammy award winning Back on the Block album. The long list of artists who’ve recorded Siedah’s songs includes Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Al Jarreau, Earth Wind & Fire, The Pointer Sisters, Paula Abdul, Amy Grant, Bobby McFerrin, Barry White, Al B. Sure, El Debarge, James Ingram, will.i.am, and others.   The Grammy winning songwriter was also nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Original Song. The first, “Love You I Do,” was performed by Jennifer Hudson in the film Dreamgirls. The second, “Real in Rio,” was from the animated film Rio, and was co-written with Sergio Mendes.

This week Vickie reconnected with an amazing woman she met at a Vogue Knitting Live conference where she was the keynote speaker. Siedah Garrett is most publicly well known as the co-writer of the song Man in the Mirror (sung by the iconic, Michael Jackson), the Grammy Award Winning & Oscar Nominated writer of “Love You I Do” from the movie Dream Girls, and as the back up singer for frankly, too many of the vocal greats to list here. What the masses may not know about her, though is that she’s also an amazing knitting and crochet designer. During their conversation, we talked about how she got started as a singer, which legendary producer pushed her to song write, her childhood introduction to knitting and crochet, and about her utter enjoyment over making statement pieces for celebrities like Madonna. I'm hard-pressed to find another booking/promotions outfit that has done as much for the local music as those boys from Shine.  People like Ben Cannon are those rare individuals who think about local music and what they can do to make it better practically 24/7.  Their continuing efforts show an on-gong dedication to quality and putting the artist and the music first and foremost.  These are the people who slap their name on event and then not even show up, figuring that the mere fact that they acknowledged you elevates your standing and their indie credibility.  Shine is first and foremost a team, and you can rest assured, they will do everything they can to make sure you succeed. Surviving in the fickle realm of the local music scene is pretty tricky.  Expanding yourself year after year with more frequent offerings and entirely new services is very impressive.  The fact that they can do this for multiple years now without anybody having a bad thing to say about their experience working with them is an unprecedented and monumental feat. Ryan Gibbons, familiar to many of you as the producer/writer/musician behind such bands as Thursday Book Club, Black Market Binary, and Half-Life ... as well as his own solo work.  By adding Ryan's undisputed talents to the Shine arsenal, Ben Cannon has upped the ante on what Shine can do for an artist by adding a high-quality, physical product to supplement the magic of the live performance.  For today's show, Ryan brings us six (technically, seven) tracks that he has had a hand in and that showcase the breadth of incredible artistry from our local scene that Shine has partnered with.
