Hailing from the largely unsung streets of Staten Island, Ferry Townes emerges as a poignant voice in the indie music scene, channeling the raw, unfiltered emotions of its frontwoman, songwriter, Julia Gargano. The name Ferry Townes is an homage to The Staten Island Ferry, a symbol of Julia's upbringing commuting to Manhattan for school, family days, dates, and watching the Statue of Liberty. Having had her public debut on American Idol Season 18 and finishing in the top 7, Gargano's debut collection is an eclectic blend of acoustic and electronic elements, reminiscent of bands like HAIM and boygenius, yet with a distinct melodic narrative and alternative pop flair. We had the pleasure of interviewing Ferry Townes over Zoom video!Ferry Townes releases new single “T.G.F.K” (Thank God For Kyle) via Licorice Pizza Records. The track is Julia Gargano's second release following “Be Here” under her new project Ferry Townes. An ode to her best friend, “T.G.F.K” includes a breathtaking chorus composed of isolated, layered choral vocals, a canonic bedroom pop guitar bridge, and lyrics imbued with sincerity: “just got nothing to do without you.” Sonically captivating, “T.G.F.K” serves as a reminder that everyone needs, and deserves a best friend.“T.G.F.K, which stands for Thank God For Kyle, is about my bestest friend. The initial idea came from being so grateful that our relationship is what it is- that we'll never have to fall in love and break up, but we will just be friends forever.” Gargano shares. The accompanying video, Directed by Stephanie Saias, perfectly encapsulates that forever kind of best friend love between Julia and Kyle. The sounds of Ferry Townes is an eclectic blend of acoustic and electronic elements, reminiscent of bands like HAIM and boygenius, yet with a distinct melodic narrative and alternative pop flair. She shares “Every page of lyrics tries to be closure to a tumultuous day, trying to compost the hard shit and turn it into energy, heartbreak into audacity, anxiousness into meditation. Nothing about life right now is normal and we are all off-roading emotionally and these songs should feel like a 4x4 for listeners.”Born and raised in Staten Island, the name Ferry Townes pays homage to The Staten Island Ferry, a symbol of Julia's teen years commuting to LaGuardia High School, family days, dates, and watching the Statue of Liberty pass by. She shares, "Staten Island, often underestimated, grows more irreplaceable to me every time I'm on the road.”From her deep Staten Island roots, grows a vivid musical exploration of feminine identity and growing pains, sprinkled with anxious flashes and flirty obsessions. Today's single “Be Here” is just the start of the Ferry Townes' melodic and coming of age journey. She shares, “I can literally see my growth as a person when I look at these songs. They were written over the span of the past 3 years, which were a rollercoaster. Mid twenties are such a weird age. Ferry Townes was born out of a need to say things we should but don't. Our songs are like those intense, never-sent letters, filled with raw overshares that one might only say with brave thumbs, but not their mouths." The song arrangements have developed over decades of touring and now the listener can hear these re-envisioned versions. As Crook states on the album: "The music is timeless, and we play it virtually note for note. The wall of sound that fans experience when seeing us live is captured in this recording. Meat Loaf fans will be pleased. We're hoping this release introduces Meat and Jim to a whole new fan base.""This album has been a labor of love for us," continues Crook. "Meat Loaf's passing has left a huge hole in the hearts of millions around the world. We are committed to keeping the legacy alive by celebrating this incredible music. I felt there was no better way to honor our boss and Jim than to release our tribute to Bat Out of Hell on this special 45th anniversary."The LP's first single “All Revved Up With No Place To Go” dropped this past October, almost 45 years to the date of the official release of the original Bat Out of Hell album. On this episode of #WeNeedToTalk, Malynda chats with American Idol alum, singer, songwriter and Host Miklaha Gordon. They chat about her using music as a way to cope as a sexual assault survivor, the concept of forgiveness, the loss of her grandmother, how the pandemic affected her as an artist, her growth from American Idol to now and her latest album, "Vivian". A moving, and heartfelt conversation. Mikalah Gordon knows how to take multifaceted to a whole new level. A Vegas native and proud LGBTQ+ Italian-American, Mikalah channels her love of family, her culture, and entertainment across music, comedy, acting, and as a TV personality/host. At only 17 years old, her time as a Top 12 contestant on American Idol Season 4 kick started her career with a national audience that took to her unique stage presence and powerful vocals. Mikalah would soon after return to Idol as a co-host for “American Idol Extra” and go on to create her own YouTube series, Idolatry, where she interviewed former coaches and contestants. Comedy is also an integral part of Mikalah's life, getting her stand up start in the LA Comedy scene— headlining The Laugh Factory and The Comedy Store—allowing her to return to TV in a whole new way, starring in the WB sitcom “Living with Fran” alongside Fran Drescher, and serving as a field correspondent for “The Tyra Banks Show” and “The TV Guide Network.” Joining the ranks as YouTube star solidified Mikalah as a comedic triple threat, with her viral portrayal of Melania Trump landing her on a recent sketch for Jimmy Kimmel Live to reprise her role alongside comedian John Di Domenico. Mikalah has also proven herself to be a skilled dramatic actress, previously starring in the CBS hit show “The Unit.” Mikalah currently serves as the host for Channel Q's Morning Beat, discussing the latest in LGBTQ+ news, pop culture, and entertainment.
Today we hear the personal journey of a dear friend of mine, John Arthur Greene, an actor, singer and songwriter. John reflects on the impact that the pause during the pandemic's lockdown had on his career and mindset. John walked away from the entertainment industry after 26 years, performing on Broadway for 8 shows a week, and more. He talks about how difficult his career has been on his body, not always in a healthy way. John and I crossed paths during my time intensively treating Broadway performers so we were able to reflect on what health meant to him years ago compared to how he feels about it now. He discusses the type of physical and mental regiment that he endured to maintain excellent physique and mindset and succeed in the industry. For John, times of prayer, meditation, and stillness with God are the most important aspects of his daily practice now. John's notable work:He was most recently seen as Walker Jerome the Blouse Man in the East Coast Premier of A Walk On The Moon at the pre-Broadway house George St. Playhouse. Some of his other credits include: Stand-By for 5 Principle Characters, the Fight Captain & Dance Captain in the revival of Stephan Sondheim's Company (Broadway). U/S Max Van Horn in Tootsie (Broadway), Theo - the lead singer of “No Vacancy” in School of Rock (Broadway); American Idol Season 15 - Farewell Season (FOX), Riff in West Side Story (Broadway); Doctor, U/S Mr. Wormwood in Matilda (Broadway); Robert Mullins in Peter Pan Live (NBC); Luke in Mim (Off-Broadway); Jonathan in Tick Tick Boom… (LA); Action in West Side Story (50th Anniversary European Tour); Jack Kelly in Newsies (Maltz Jupiter); Riff in West Side Story (Boston Pops Symphony); Danny in Grease (NCT - BroadwayWorld.com Award For Best Actor In A Musical) just to name a few. He performs solo's and his solo music all over the world, singing “Oh Holy Night” for ABC 11's 2020 Happy Holiday's Special; “Heavens On Their Minds” for the promotion of NBC's Jesus Christ Superstar Live with the kids from School Of Rock on Broadway, “Gethsemane” for Andrew Lloyd Webber's New York Times Talk and “Jailhouse Rock” for Mike Stoller's 80th Birthday Celebration. His Latest Single “LiNE & THE LETTiNG GO” is out along with “March On!”, “Wild & Free”, “Hold Onto Me”, “Easy”, “Brooklyn”, “Takes Me Back” & his Debut EP “Shadows Of Light” are all now available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and YouTube under his own record label JAG Records. The music videos for “LiNE & THE LETTiNG GO”, “March On!”, “Over & Over”, “Wild & Free”, “Easy” & “Creep” are available on YouTube. John runs a Prayer & Worship Ministry called REViAL SESSiONS which went global in 2017 reaching 18 different countries. After spending 15 years away, John is now back and has accepted the call to serve as the Worship Pastor at New Hope Church in Durham. Connect with him:www.johnarthurgreenemusic.com.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Mikalah Gordon over Zoom video. Mikalah has been able to find strength and healing from rough times through the power of music, with the journey to her first-ever record. In the height of the Pandemic, the artist found herself in a place of depression (like many of us) after losing her best friend (her grandmother) and being stuck in the world we were forced to live through in 2020. To help process her emotions, her friend and mutual Idol alum, Brandon Rogers, invited her into the studio to write out her feelings. This collaborative effort also features her first ever bilingual track, musicians who've worked with LGTBQ+ icon Lady Gaga, and even a duet with Mikalah's brother (who recently left to join the U.S. Army) leading to a cathartic record that shares Mikalah's story and universal themes of love, loss, and self-acceptance. Now, Mikalah has just released her newest single, “Hands Off” off of her debut album VIVIAN, named after the singer's later grandmother. Mikalah would soon after return to Idol as a co-host for “American Idol Extra” and go on to create her own YouTube series, Idolatry, where she interviewed former coaches and contestants In addition to this exciting step into music, Mikalah continues to host Channel Q's ‘The Morning Beat' and World's Funniest & Weirdest on the CW.
