Welcome back to When Words Fail Music Speaks, the show that explores how music can lift us out of depression, anxiety, and everyday struggles. In today's episode, host James Cox—your “professional handicapped” guide to the power of sound—sits down with Grammy‑winning arranger, composer, and multi‑instrumentalist Fletch Wiley. We dive deep into Fletch's remarkable story: a childhood trumpeter from Seattle who chased his dream to the University of North Texas, survived a battle with drugs, found a life‑changing conversion to Christianity in 1971, and has since devoted his talent to ministry, touring the world with his wife under the Heart and Art initiative. From the nuts‑and‑bolts of jazz—Fletch's recommendations for newcomers (Chuck Mangione, Kirk Whalum, Chris Bodie) and his take on the “all‑wrong‑notes” myth—to the art of arranging across genres (worship, film scoring, children's music, theater, and big‑band projects), the conversation reveals why he believes jazz is “the highest form of music” because it demands real‑time improvisation, listening, and technical mastery.Listeners will also get practical tips for getting into jazz, a behind‑the‑scenes look at his global benefit concerts (Turkey, Egypt, Albania, Nigeria, South Africa), and a few lightning‑round fun facts that showcase his personality—favorite coffee, dream super‑band lineup, the instrument that would complain the most, and the single piece that moves his soul (Beethoven's 2nd Movement of the 7th Symphony).Whether you're a seasoned jazz aficionado, a country‑music lover, or simply searching for the therapeutic resonance of melody, this episode offers inspiration, humor, and a heartfelt reminder that music really does speak—and can heal. Tune in, settle in, and let Fletch Wiley's story and wisdom harmonize with your own journey.

#223: How A New York Intern Became A Grammy-Winning Mastering Engineer (Sound Discussion Podcast)

What does it really take to go from invisible intern to trusted, Grammy-winning mastering engineer? The Sound Discussion Podcast sit down with Dan Millice to unpack the habits, choices, and honest work that shaped his journey, from cleaning bathrooms and taking cheques to the bank at MasterDisc, to building a client list one late-night venue at a time, to mastering records for artists across genres and continents.Dan explains why he chose to specialise in mastering and why he ultimately moved fully in the box. The answer isn't dogma, it's service. Faster recalls, instant fixes, and reliable delivery matter when a label needs a longer fade today or a track order change by this afternoon. He breaks down his no-template approach, starting albums from a blank session, picking a reference track, and selecting EQs, de-essers, and limiters for each song's needs. We compare popular limiters, FabFilter Pro L2, Ozone Maximizer, and talk about why default settings rarely cut it, how genre changes limiter behaviour, and when subtlety beats shine. You'll also hear how Dan handles mixes that aren't ready. He shares the quick QC process, the value of a phone call to align on vision, and the ethics of pushing back so the final record wins. Beyond tools and taste, the throughline is human: relationships, trust, and responsiveness. Recognition and nominations follow the reps, wet Tuesday nights at shows, genuine conversations, and consistent delivery. For artists and engineers, this conversation is a roadmap: specialise with intent, keep learning, meet people in the real world, and above all, serve the song.Links mentioned in this episode:Listen to the Sound Discussion PodcastFollow the Sound Discussion PodcastFollow Dan MilliceListen to episode 197 (Nate Kelmes)Send me a message Support the showWays to connect with Marc: Listener Feedback Survey - tell me what YOU want in 2026 Radio-ready mixes start here - get the FREE weekly tips Book your FREE Music Breakthrough Strategy Call Follow Marc's Socials: Instagram | YouTube | Synth Music Mastering Thanks for listening!! Send us a textHello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul and this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am proud to host Christian McBride, multi Grammy-winning jazz superstar bass player! We talk about performing at sea, and hear about Christian's inaugural charter cruise, Christian McBride's World at Sea, January 20-27, 2026. The cruise will be on Celebrity Summit from Ft. Lauderdale, stopping at Jamaica and Grand Cayman.Christian McBride is creating a new kind of experience for jazz fans while breaking new ground for artists as he takes on a "captain" and completely immersive role on his upcoming cruise, Christian McBride's World at Sea (produced by Signature Cruise Experiences whom we hosted on the podcast when they were called, Jazz Cruises, Ep 113). Music cruises have gained in popularity in recent years and give fans an incredible opportunity to personally engage with their favorite artists (running into them all week long on the ship...at the buffet, the pool, during shore excursions together, seeing concerts in smaller venues than they would on tour) but Christian is in a unique position where he's not simply one of the acts booked onto a festival at sea. Instead, he curated the cruise, building a completely personal environment and atmosphere to share with jazz fans by inviting his friends and peers like Samara Joy, Angelique Kidjo, Ledisi, Jose James, Cecile McLorin Salvant and 40 more musicians to join them. Plus, he's a prolific musician, in several bands at any given moment so it's no surprise that his time on the cruise will be no different than on land: He is bringing three of his bands onboard and will perform with each of them separately.Christian has performed on over 400 recordings, leads six different bands, has been the Creative Chair for Jazz at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is the artistic director for the world-renowned Newport Jazz Festival, curates the James Moody Jazz Festival and he hosts the popular NPR show "Jazz Night in America." Christian McBride's World at Sea: https://mcbridesworldatsea.com/Do you have a dream car?Keep Travelling – Your African VacationInsightful interviews with Africa's tourism professionals - Great giveaways from 5* guestsListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showSupport thejoyofcruisingpodcast https://www.buzzsprout.com/2113608/supporters/newSupport Me https://www.buymeacoffee.com/drpaulthContact Me https://www.thejoyofcruising.net/contact-me.htmlBook Cruises http://www.thejoyofvacation.com/US Orders (coupon code joyofcruisingpodcast)The Joy of Cruising https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingCruising Interrupted https://bit.ly/CruisingInterruptedThe Joy of Cruising Again https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingAgainIntl Orders via Amazon

Today's guest is a musical architect whose fingerprints are on some of the most emotionally resonant and sonically rich records of the last decade. He's not the loudest in the room—but when he's in the studio, every note, every tone, every beat matters. A multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer with an unmatched intuition, he brings out the soul in every song, guiding artists to their most authentic performances. From Grammy-winning collaborations with Kacey Musgraves to shaping records across indie, country, rock, and beyond, he's the quiet force behind the soundtracks to our lives. All the way from Nashville, Tennessee, this master of nuance proves that subtlety can be a superpower.
