In this episode, Carl interviews legendary Cuban-born jazz drummer Ignacio Berroa who spent over a decade alongside the great Dizzy Gillespie and has performed with icons like McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Clark Terry, and Jaco Pastorius. Born into a distinguished Cuban musical family, Ignacio fell in love with jazz at age 11 after his father brought home a Glenn Miller Orchestra record, and he never let go of the dream, even when the regime he lived under made loving American music a punishable offense. Ignacio opens up about what life was really like inside Castro's Cuba: the state surveillance, the religious suppression, the secret nights spent tuning his radio toward Key West to catch Willis Conover and the Voice of America Jazz Hour. He shares the heartbreak of tasting freedom on tours through Spain and knowing he had to return to a country that felt like a prison, and the impossible loyalty that kept him from defecting because two people he loved would have paid the price. When the Port of Mariel finally opened in 1980, his cousin flew from New York and waited in the harbor for a month to bring him home. The conversation moves from the personal to the prophetic as Carl and Ignacio discuss the truth about Marxist regimes that today's young Americans never learned in school, the lessons of the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie, the four and a half years Ignacio's wife and son were held in Cuba as hostages while he tried to make it in New York, and why he believes the Cuban people deserve nothing less than full freedom. With his memoir The Path I Chose: My Story now available on Amazon, Ignacio offers a powerful testimony of resilience, faith, and the unstoppable pursuit of a dream.

Today's guest is quite simply one of the most iconic voices in hip hop and R&B.She's the artist behind some of the biggest tracks of the early 2000s, including Who's That Girl, Let Me Blow Ya Mind with Gwen Stefani, and Gangsta Lovin'. These are songs that defined an era and still feel just as fresh today. It is of course, Eve.Born and raised in Philadelphia, Eve, rose to global fame as part of the legendary Ruff Ryders crew, working alongside names like DMX and Dr. Dre, before carving out her own hugely successful solo career. She became the third female rapper in history to have a number one album on the Billboard 200, won a Grammy, starred in film and television, and has remained one of the most respected and trailblazing women in the industry. But beyond the music, there's a whole other side to Eve, one shaped by travel. As she told me, she still feels like that “little girl from Philadelphia who got to see the world because of her music” . In this episode, we explore exactly how that journey has unfolded.I spoke to Eve a couple of weeks ago in person on the South Bank in London, in the beautiful Big Ben Balcony suite of the London Marriott County Hall, looking out over the houses of Parliament and Westminster Bridge. From childhood trips to the Jersey Shore, to falling in love with Jamaica, to building a life here in London, which she now calls home, I know you're going to love this one.Holly's Destination Recap: - Naturhotel Forsthofgut, Austria Eve's Destination Recap:Jersey Shore, USAKingston, Jamaica Bob Marley Beach, JamaicaNegril, JamaicaLondonIbiza Es Vedra, Ibiza New York, USASloveniaKasakhstan Colorado, USAOmanEve's Scorpion 25th Anniversary Edition (Red and Black Splatter, 2LP) is out now hereThis episode was recorded at the London Marriott Hotel County Hall. With thanks to…Airbnb - Your home might be worth more than you think. Long recognized as one of the most thrilling and thoughtful guitarists of his generation, Matthew Stevens has built an elite reputation in music, touring, and recording with a "who's who" of modern icons, including Esperanza Spalding, Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah, Harvey Mason, and Walter Smith Ill. He has also made a splash outside of jazz, having produced the tribute album I Am A Pilgrim - Doc Watson at 100, featuring artists such as Valerie June, Steve Earle, Nora Brown, and Dolly Parton (Stevens produced Parton's version of "The Last Thing on My Mind," which earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Solo Performance in 2024). A culmination of 20 years of craft, the eponymous album serves as a mid-career mission statement with Stevens stepping into the spotlight. Co-produced by Stevens, saxophonist Josh Johnson, and percussionist Eric Doob, the record seamlessly melds acoustic and electric sonics through a mix of genre-blurring originals and deeply personal covers. It features a multigenerational cast of musicians who have had a profound impact on Stevens' journey, including rising visionaries like vibraphonist Joel Ross and vocalists Anna B Savage and Corey King, in addition to his mentor Terri Lyne Carrington and personal guitar hero Jeff Parker. At the album's core is a band of his most trusted collaborators, which also includes keyboardist Chris Fishman and bassist Kyle Miles, with additional contributions from percussionist Paulo Stagnaro and guitarists Dylan Day and Rich Hinman on slide and pedal steel. Matthew Stevens reflects a period of profound personal and artistic change, ultimately bringing him to "a place of optimism, excitement, and confidence" that signals a bold new chapter for one of jazz's most essential voices and respected players. website www.mattstevens.com www.instagram.com/matthewthomaswyatt Spotify https://open.spotify.com/artist/7z1PSpsIyAeniOOtaQ1iYa?si=cS9P53EIR46Qs9X4YvAd-g About Music Matters with Darrell Craig Harris The Music Matters Podcast is hosted by Darrell Craig Harris, a globally published music journalist, professional musician, and Getty Images photographer. 11-time Grammy Award winner Christian McBride returns to SportsJam with Doug Doyle to talk about Philadelphia's legendary sports teams and players
My guest on this week's Bitesize episode is Sara Watkins, who joins me to talk about I'm With Her's Grammy winning album 'Wild and Clear and Blue'. It's an album I really love (and a conversation I loved too) and I wanted to put something out to celebrate not only the Grammy win, but also the Grammy they won for the opening track 'Ancient Light'.Sara talks about the process behind writing the record, which began to take shape shortly after the pandemic, why collaboration was so important and the central themes that emerged during the process. We also talk about community and connection in music and how the line between audience and stage is a little thinner in folk music than for some other formats. This comes from a longer conversation we had in 2025. You'll find the full interview with Sara here.Sara also mentions an interview I did with her bandmate Sarah Jarosz, about her album 'Blue Heron Suite'.For more info on I'm With Her, including upcoming tour dates and to buy I'm With Her vinyl, CDs and merch, visit imwithherband.comFor regular updates follow Sara on Instagram and Facebook Support the show===Thanks to Bryan Sutton for his wonderful theme tune to Bluegrass Jam Along (and to Justin Moses for playing the fiddle!) In this edition of our arts24 music show, Jennifer Ben Brahim is joined by co-presenter Marjorie Hache to talk about the biggest night in music: the 68th Grammy Awards. It was a night of musical milestones, mishaps and sharp commentary on the political situation in the United States. Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny became the first Spanish-language artist to win Album of the Year for his critically acclaimed "Debí Tirar Más Fotos". He dedicated his award to immigrants, and called out the US administration's current immigration crackdown.

Welcome back to When Words Fail Music Speaks, the show that explores how music can lift us out of depression, anxiety, and everyday struggles. In today's episode, host James Cox—your “professional handicapped” guide to the power of sound—sits down with Grammy‑winning arranger, composer, and multi‑instrumentalist Fletch Wiley. We dive deep into Fletch's remarkable story: a childhood trumpeter from Seattle who chased his dream to the University of North Texas, survived a battle with drugs, found a life‑changing conversion to Christianity in 1971, and has since devoted his talent to ministry, touring the world with his wife under the Heart and Art initiative. From the nuts‑and‑bolts of jazz—Fletch's recommendations for newcomers (Chuck Mangione, Kirk Whalum, Chris Bodie) and his take on the “all‑wrong‑notes” myth—to the art of arranging across genres (worship, film scoring, children's music, theater, and big‑band projects), the conversation reveals why he believes jazz is “the highest form of music” because it demands real‑time improvisation, listening, and technical mastery.Listeners will also get practical tips for getting into jazz, a behind‑the‑scenes look at his global benefit concerts (Turkey, Egypt, Albania, Nigeria, South Africa), and a few lightning‑round fun facts that showcase his personality—favorite coffee, dream super‑band lineup, the instrument that would complain the most, and the single piece that moves his soul (Beethoven's 2nd Movement of the 7th Symphony).Whether you're a seasoned jazz aficionado, a country‑music lover, or simply searching for the therapeutic resonance of melody, this episode offers inspiration, humor, and a heartfelt reminder that music really does speak—and can heal. Tune in, settle in, and let Fletch Wiley's story and wisdom harmonize with your own journey.

What does it really take to go from invisible intern to trusted, Grammy-winning mastering engineer? The Sound Discussion Podcast sit down with Dan Millice to unpack the habits, choices, and honest work that shaped his journey, from cleaning bathrooms and taking cheques to the bank at MasterDisc, to building a client list one late-night venue at a time, to mastering records for artists across genres and continents.Dan explains why he chose to specialise in mastering and why he ultimately moved fully in the box. The answer isn't dogma, it's service. Faster recalls, instant fixes, and reliable delivery matter when a label needs a longer fade today or a track order change by this afternoon. He breaks down his no-template approach, starting albums from a blank session, picking a reference track, and selecting EQs, de-essers, and limiters for each song's needs. We compare popular limiters, FabFilter Pro L2, Ozone Maximizer, and talk about why default settings rarely cut it, how genre changes limiter behaviour, and when subtlety beats shine. You'll also hear how Dan handles mixes that aren't ready. He shares the quick QC process, the value of a phone call to align on vision, and the ethics of pushing back so the final record wins. Beyond tools and taste, the throughline is human: relationships, trust, and responsiveness. Recognition and nominations follow the reps, wet Tuesday nights at shows, genuine conversations, and consistent delivery. For artists and engineers, this conversation is a roadmap: specialise with intent, keep learning, meet people in the real world, and above all, serve the song.Links mentioned in this episode:Listen to the Sound Discussion PodcastFollow the Sound Discussion PodcastFollow Dan MilliceListen to episode 197 (Nate Kelmes)Send me a message Support the showWays to connect with Marc: Listener Feedback Survey - tell me what YOU want in 2026 Radio-ready mixes start here - get the FREE weekly tips Book your FREE Music Breakthrough Strategy Call Follow Marc's Socials: Instagram | YouTube | Synth Music Mastering Thanks for listening!! Episode 92: Joe Lovano. Joe Lovano is one of the greatest musicians of all time. A Grammy-winning saxophonist who's been on the cover of DownBeat magazine multiple times (as well as many others), a Blue Note Records legend with 25 releases, a Berklee alum, and he holds the Gary Burton Chair in Jazz Performance at Berklee College of Music, which he's had since 2001. He also happens to be my cousin and one of the biggest inspirations and mentors in my life. This was our first time ever doing something like this together. A 3-hour deep dive interview that covers (nearly) his entire career. We go into our family history, growing up in Cleveland, our Sicilian roots, his father Tony “Big T” Lovano, and how that shaped his sound and spirit. We talk about his time with Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Esperanza Spalding, Michael Brecker, McCoy Tyner, Paul Motian, Bill Frisell, Hank Jones, Dave Holland, Joshua Redman, Al Foster, and many more. Joe shares lessons from decades of leading bands, developing tone, mentoring young players, and living a full creative life with his wife of 50 years, Judi Silvano. Joe is one of the greatest musicians alive, a music historian, and an incredible educator and mentor. This week on the New Music Business podcast, Ari sits down with Nicole Zuraitis, a GRAMMY-winning, New York–based jazz singer, songwriter, pianist, and arranger. Her 2023 album How Love Begins—co-produced with Christian McBride—won Best Jazz Vocal Album at the 66th GRAMMY Awards (2024). She's performed widely from Birdland and Dizzy's Club to symphony halls, and first earned GRAMMY attention in 2019 for her arrangement of Dolly Parton's “Jolene” with the Dan Pugach Nonet. Recent projects include the concert release Live at Vic's and international touring, with additional 2025 GRAMMY nominations connected to her work with husband, Dan Pugach. In this episode, Nicole traces her path from early days hustling in New York's scene to recording a live album, collaborating with Christian McBride, touring in China with Jazz at Lincoln Center partners, and navigating the realities of indie artistry. She digs into the power of networking, the pandemic's impact on jazz rooms, why physical formats still matter, and how grants and private donors help fund albums—before previewing what's next on her creative slate. https://www.nicolezmusic.com/4:53 - Introduction and Nicole's new live album9:23 - The decision to record live at VIXX15:53 - Collaborating with Christian McBride22:38 - Touring in China and working with Jazz at Lincoln Center29:08 - The Grammy experience and independent artist challenges36:33 - The role of networking in New York's music scene44:13 - The impact of the pandemic on jazz clubs51:43 - The importance of physical music products in the digital age59:23 - Funding albums through grants and private donors1:05:53 - Nicole's upcoming projects and future plansEdited and mixed by Peter SchruppMusic by Brassroots DistrictProduced by the team at Ari's TakeOrder the THIRD EDITION of How to Make It in the New Music Business: https://book.aristake.com Hosted on Acast.
