Episode 92: Joe Lovano. Joe Lovano is one of the greatest musicians of all time. A Grammy-winning saxophonist who's been on the cover of DownBeat magazine multiple times (as well as many others), a Blue Note Records legend with 25 releases, a Berklee alum, and he holds the Gary Burton Chair in Jazz Performance at Berklee College of Music, which he's had since 2001. He also happens to be my cousin and one of the biggest inspirations and mentors in my life. This was our first time ever doing something like this together. A 3-hour deep dive interview that covers (nearly) his entire career. We go into our family history, growing up in Cleveland, our Sicilian roots, his father Tony “Big T” Lovano, and how that shaped his sound and spirit. Woody Platt is a Grammy Winning guitarist and singer and a founding member of the Steep Canyon Rangers, the celebrated contemporary bluegrass band. They have collaborated with comedian and banjo player Steve Martin. Now a solo performer, Woody's song, “One Last Goodbye”, co-written with Barry Bales, was the most played bluegrass song in 2022. Matt and Kari Landry are the husband and wife duo who play saxophone and clarinet and who are the founders of the Akropolis Reed Quintet, the Grammy winning chamber ensemble. The Akropolis is a nonprofit venture run by Kari and for which Matt is the artistic director. The group has been together for 16 years and has premiered and commissioned over 200 works by living artists and composers. Melissa Manchester is a Musical Superstar and Grammy winning singer, songwriter and actress. Her career has spanned over 50 years. She's written and recorded a number of hit records starting with “Midnight Blue” (1973) which she wrote with Carole Bayer Sager.
