Send us a textEddie stops by the show to discuss the hit song he wrote, 'Hit Me With Your Best Shot', his last CD, 'Film School', and so much more. ******The first time I heard Pat Benatar's version of ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot,' I was almost arrested for loitering,” laughs internationally lauded Canadian songwriter, producer, performer, and rights advocate Eddie Schwartz about the song he penned that became Benatar's first Top Ten single in 1980. “I was walking down Yonge Street in Toronto when I heard it blasting out of a renowned hair salon and stopped dead in my tracks. I even think I started to drool [laughs]. As I stood there in a state of shock, a salon stylist called the police because of my strange behavior. When they arrived, they ordered me to move or face arrest. When I tried to explain to them that I just heard my song on the radio for the first time, they said, 'Sure, buddy. Move along." Stepping out from behind the curtain and into the spotlight, Schwartz will be physically releasing his full-length studio release on CD, FILM SCHOOL, on November 12, 2025. His songs have been recorded by an astonishing roster: Carly Simon, Joe Cocker, America, Donna Summer, Rita Coolidge, Rascal Flatts, and Mountain, among many others. As a producer, his credits include the Doobie Brothers' Cycles, Carrack's Groove Approved, and his own albums, all resonating with an unmistakable blend of craftsmanship and soul. This six-song EP finds the storied songwriter who authored such classics as Paul Carrack's "Don't Shed a Tear" (1987), The Doobie Brothers' "The Doctor" (1989), the aforementioned “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” (among hundreds of others) on the other side of the studio glass.“It's a difficult time right now and I freely admit to struggling with how to cope with the daily insanity,” says Eddie about the current political and socio-economic climate. Instead of subjecting himself to the barrage of news, he opted instead to return to the studio and write songs. “The moment of writing ‘We Win' was profound for me because I found a way to a more hopeful place that helped with anger, sadness and bewilderment at how we got here,” he explains. “I felt the message of ‘We Win' offered some sanity that I needed to cling to, that I needed to find for myself. And I wanted to share it in the hope it might work for others as well.” After an extended creative drought that plagued him for years, writing the single and subsequent songs on Film School was a turning point for him. “After a number of years doing the Nashville-style co-writing every day—two songs a day, five days a week— I burned out,” Eddie reflects. “The blank page stayed blank for a long time,” he explains of the rigorous demands of being a songwriter in today's music business. The catalyst to cure his writer's block was his frustration with current events. “My struggle to process the world at this moment in time and muster some resolve was what propelled me back in the writing mindset. ‘We Win' acknowledges the pain and the struggle, but professes love means you don't have to succumb to it.”*********If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. In the seventh installment of Sekret Machine Music, Dimitri and Khalid explore the origins and colossal impact of West German electro-pop pioneers Kraftwerk, including: the looming influence of Karlheinz Stockhausen, the Cologne-based Studio for Electronic Music and its murky entanglements with Cultural Cold War operations, the late 60s rise of ‘krautrock' and attempts to forge a new organic post-Nazi German identity, the ambiguities around cultural symbolism on 1974's “Autobahn” and nuclear power on 1975's “Radioactivity”, the US/UK success of their seminal 1977 album “Trans-Europe Express”, Kraftwerk blowing up on African-American radio stations in the northeast and midwest, leaning into the “robotic” German stereotypes, the gradual introduction of Kraftwerk's music onto the discotheque dancefloors of the late 1970s, the birth of disco in gay bathhouses, Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer forever marrying synthesizers and disco together with “I Feel Love”, and the strange proto-MAGA rockist culture war that culminated in Chicago's “Disco Demolition Night” riot of 1979… For access to premium SJ episodes, upcoming installments of DEMON FORCES, and the Grotto of Truth Discord, subscribe at https://patreon.com/subliminaljihad.

Label: Casablanca 884Year: 1977Condition: MPrice: $12.00From a warehouse find, this is a new, unplayed stock copy, in its original Casablanca factory sleeve. Listening to this, it's easy to see how Summer became the queen of the disco/tech in the late 1970s, helped enormously by great material and by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte's distinctive techno arrangements. The mp3 snippet is an edit from the middle of the track, trying to capture in 2 minutes or less the essence of the music; it's a compromise, though. If you don't have the full 5:53 music, be sure to get it! This is the second pressing, which shows "Side A" for "I Feel Love;" the single was originally released plugging "Can't We Just..." and showing "I Feel Love" as "Side B." The B side is edited from a 4:25 album track. Note: This copy has light storage wear that lowers the Label grade to Near Mint. The wax and audio are pristine.

The lyrical blend reads like a hypnotic sermon about surrendering to love and music — pure euphoria." On March 2nd 2025 I had the immense privilege of DJ'ing the closing set in the Horden Pavilion for the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Party. “I made this mashup to open my set — to remind us why we're here on the dance floor, It's not about yesterday or tomorrow. It's about feeling love, right now, in the moment”. “And I wanted the opening to be an invitation to my set, for the next hour, let's forget your life, forget your problems, administration, bills and loans, come with me, tonight, we can leave everything behind — our worries, our insecurities, our limits and step into the evidence of love. Future meets past.

D'Australie. Quoi ?

Richie Zito checks a lot of boxes for the Hustle. For one, he was a noted session guitarist in the 70s for artists like Neil Sedaka, Hellen Reddy, Leif Garrett, and Elton John. Then he eventually became one of the most successful producers of the next decade working with people like Eddie Money ("Take Me Home Tonight"), Cheap Trick ("The Flame"), Bad English ("When I See You Smile"), the Cult, Heart, and Poison. In between, he hooked up with Giorgio Moroder and played on everything he did for a while including "Danger Zone", Berlin, Donna Summer and tons more. There is a mountain of gold to cover in this one and I have a feeling we just scratched the surface. Enjoy! The Hustle Podcast | creating podcasts | Patreon

Some 15 months and 65 shows later, the guilty-pleasures episode remains one of the three most-listened-to episodes of "How We Heard It." So Wayne and Chuck - plus their engineer, songwriter/musician John T. Baker - decided to revisit the topic and own up to more embarrassing affections about what they find entertaining, including artists who often get looked down on (from New Age acts on Windham Hill Records to Peter, Paul and Mary), as well as mainstream musicals and novelty bands. Find out who likes Donna Summer, who likes the Pointer Sisters and who can't hide his love of high-voiced women. One of the guys loves the "bubblegum" rock of Three Dog Night, another loves the "yuppie rock" of Counting Crows and one of them can't tear himself away from those social media video compilations where people scare their loved ones, friends and family. These admissions may ding your hosts' credibility, but they aren't ashamed and don't think you should be ashamed of your guilty pleasures either. Well ... maybe they're a little ashamed. And maybe you should be too. But whatever: Life's too short to worry about the opinions of snobs.

When "Last Dance" isn't Donna Summer.
Hello Groovers, Today's episode of Liquid Sunshine was nothing short of a disco revelation, showcasing the raw power and timeless appeal of authentic 12-inch disco classics. Opening with Peter Brown's explosive "Crank It Up," the show immediately established its intention to deliver serious dancefloor ammunition from the first beat. Frantique's "Strut Your Funky Stuff" followed, proving that when disco was done right, it was an unstoppable force of nature. The tracklist read like a who's who of disco's golden age, featuring both celebrated legends and criminally underrated gems that deserve their moment in the spotlight. Evelyn Champagne King's powerful rendition of "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In" brought that unmistakable vocal prowess that defined the era's best singers. Dan Hartman's "Instant Replay" reminded listeners why he was one of disco's most innovative producers, while Roy Ayers' "Get on Up, Get on Down" delivered that signature jazz-funk fusion that made him a crossover legend. Two Man Sound's "Que Tal America" added an international flavor that showed disco's global reach and influence. The deeper cuts proved equally compelling, with Five Letters delivering a double dose of funky excellence through both "Tha Kee Tha Tha" and "Crazy Man." George McRae's "Don't You Feel My Love" showcased the soulful side of disco that connected directly to its R&B roots. Voggue's "Roller Boogie" captured the pure joy and escapism that made disco a cultural phenomenon, while Freddie James' "Get Up and Boogie" was exactly what its title promised—an irresistible call to the dancefloor. Le Pamplemousse's "Planet of Love" offered cosmic disco at its finest, creating otherworldly soundscapes that transported listeners beyond the everyday. Stone's "Time" demonstrated the genre's ability to be both philosophical and thoroughly danceable. Paul Sabu's "Shotgun" brought rock-tinged energy to the mix, proving disco's versatility and broad appeal. The inclusion of Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff" was a masterstroke, representing disco royalty alongside lesser-known but equally powerful tracks. T-Connection's "Midnight" added late-night sophistication, while Ramsey Lewis offered a jazz legend's take on "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In," creating an interesting counterpoint to Evelyn King's earlier version. The show closed with Linx's "You're Lying," a perfect ending that left listeners wanting more. Every track was selected for maximum impact, with bass lines that could move mountains and rhythms that demanded physical response. This was disco curation at its finest—a reminder that when you dig deep enough, the treasures you uncover can still move crowds decades later. Today's Liquid Sunshine proved once again why the show remains essential listening for anyone serious about funk, groove, and the timeless power of great music. For the week ending August 27, 1983, the Billboard Hot 100 was loaded with some of the most iconic songs of the decade. At the top, The Police were wrapping up their legendary run with “Every Breath You Take” before yielding to a new wave of contenders. Hot on their heels, Eurythmics' synth-driven “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” was climbing fast, while Michael Sembello's “Maniac” was burning up the charts thanks to the Flashdance craze. The rest of the Top 10 offered a mix of pure 80s variety: Donna Summer's “She Works Hard for the Money”, Men at Work's “It's a Mistake”, and Taco's quirky “Puttin' on the Ritz” stood alongside classic rock staples like Stevie Nicks' “Stand Back” and Billy Joel's “Tell Her About It.” Further down the list, radio was buzzing with Lionel Richie, Culture Club, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, and Journey—all proving that pop, rock, R&B, and new wave were all thriving together. On this week's podcast, Rob and Dave will dive into the chart and each pick a personal favorite. The fun twist is in their contrasting styles: Dave leans into the big anthems and timeless pop moments, while Rob often digs a little deeper, spotlighting tracks that might not have hit No. 1 but still capture the spirit of the era. Together, they'll break down what makes these songs stand out—whether it's the infectious hooks, the MTV-ready videos, or the way the tracks still hold up decades later. By the end, listeners will get not only a countdown snapshot of late-summer '83, but also two very different perspectives on which hits truly defined that moment. Today, we follow a tale as old as time... A woman from the city that just wanted to get by and be appreciated... A woman that made her own way, despite the trials and tribulations it took to get there... A woman that knew how to flaunt it and find her own Prince Charming... A woman that became the Queen of Disco... Donna Summer. In Once Upon a Time, Donna retells the Cinderella story in a way that only she can. It should have been a full on Broadway production... and it still can if you ask us! We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2017 conversation with Jimmy Webb. ABOUT JIMMY WEBBJimmy Webb emerged as a superstar songwriter and arranger in 1967 when two of his songs – The 5th Dimension's “Up, Up and Away” and Glen Campbell's “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” - were among the five nominees for the Grammy's Song of the Year award. He went on to write a string of major hits for Campbell, including “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” "Where's the Playground Susie,” “Honey Come Back,” and many others. Additionally, he penned “MacArthur Park,” which was a hit for a diverse range of artists, including Richard Harris, Waylon Jennings, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, and Donna Summer; “The Worst That Could Happen,” which was a Top 5 hit for The Brooklyn Bridge; “Didn't We,” which was recorded by Thelma Houston, Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, and Barbra Streisand; “All I Know,” which became a Top 10 hit for Art Garfunkel; “The Moon's a Harsh Mistress,” which has been recorded by Joe Cocker, Judy Collins, Linda Ronstadt, and Josh Groban; and “If These Walls Could Speak,” which was recorded by Glen Campbell, Amy Grant, Nanci Griffith, and Shawn Colvin. Others who've covered material from the Jimmy Webb songbook include Diana Ross, Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone, The Four Tops, Roberta Flack, The Temptations, The Association, Tom Jones, Dionne Warwick, Cass Elliot, Harry Nilsson, Nancy Wilson, Cher, Bob Dylan, The Everly Brothers, Nick Cave, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Sheena Easton, David Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein, R.E.M., Aimee Mann, America, Aretha Franklin, Isaac Hayes, Peggy Lee, Bette Midler, James Taylor, Carrie Underwood, Dwight Yoakam, and The Highwaymen (consisting of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson), who took Jimmy's song “Highwayman” to #1, earning him a Grammy for Country Song of the Year. As an artist, he has released more than a dozen albums. One of the most celebrated songwriters on the planet, Jimmy is the only individual to win Grammy awards for music, lyrics, and orchestration. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame. Additionally, he has received ASCAP's Lifetime Achievement Award, the Influential Songwriter Award from the National Music Publishers Association, and the Academy of Country Music's prestigious Poets Award. In 2015 he was named among Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. Jimmy's memoir, The Cake and the Rain, details his formative years and early career through 1973. It's available now from St. Martin's Press.
