While Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips have never been busier, they've been itching to return to the title that solidified their reputation. We discuss what That Texas Bloodoffers them that no other story does. We explore how this series reflects our current moment and how genre tropes guide their characters toward revelation. Not everyone is comfortable answering the question, but Matthew Rosenberg gives it a go in our recent conversation at San Diego Comic-Con International, after a little nudge/encouragement. Matt Rosenberg will take over writing duties on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #25, after Gene Luen Yang and Fero Pe wrap up their current “City That Never Dies” storyline. Rosenberg is on a hot streak, writing both Spawn and King Spawn, as well as If Destruction Be Our Lot. Not to forget the eagerly anticipated cinematic adaptation of 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank hitting screens next year. He's the third writer to tackle the monthly Ninja Turtle series in three years, and he promises to bring a unique perspective to our favorite mutant brothers. First, his Turtles are going to war, and it's going to take them down nearly every New York City street. Streets Rosenberg knows exceptionally well as someone raised on them. Secondly, Rosenberg is a diehard Turtle fanatic, and he's been plotting possibilities for these characters since he was twelve or so. Doug Wagner joins Jace on The Comic Source for an in-depth conversation about I Love Apocalyptic Zombie Misfits, his latest collaboration with artist Daniel Hillyard. The project began when Hillyard gave Wagner a list of supernatural things he wanted to draw — slashers, vampires, zombies and more — and Wagner eventually came to the simplest possible conclusion: why choose? Do all of them. The resulting story follows Cecil, a pacifist from the 1980s reincarnated into the body of a supernatural slasher, on a road trip alongside an increasingly bizarre group of supernatural misfits attempting to prevent either Heaven or Hell from winning a battle that would wipe humanity out. Doug talks about why character always comes before plot in his work, how he and Hillyard keep even their most violent and absurd stories grounded in emotional sincerity, and how characters including Pavla, Yoel and the zombie truck Tuck continued evolving while they created the book. The conversation also looks back at Wagner and Hillyard's collaborations on Plastic, Vinyl, Plush and Narco and how years of working together have created a level of trust that allows Hillyard to interpret layouts, camera angles and even character moments without Wagner dictating every detail. Wagner recalls moments where Hillyard added something that wasn't in the original script and actually changed the way Wagner understood his own character. Then it's a deep dive into the crowdfunding campaign: the oversized hardcover, die-cut Murder Chicken slipcase, complete behind-the-scenes process companion, Chris Bachalo artwork and an Uno-inspired Murder Chickens card game Wagner unexpectedly designed and play-tested with his wife. This week, we're once again in the thick of San Diego Comic-Con International, chatting with filmmaker Duncan Jones about his upcoming animated adaptation of Rogue Trooper, based on the iconic 2000 AD character created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons. Amongst the pulsating exhibit hall, tucked inside the 2000 AD booth, we chat with Jones about his passion for Rogue Trooper, how it ties thematically into his other movies (Moon, Source Code, Warcraft), and why animation was the only medium that could satisfy his creative needs. Also, we enlist our friend Bryan Young (of B and B Movie Reviews) to detail his excruciating saga in the infamous Hall H line and whether his nearly 48 hours of waiting resulted in a satisfying Marvel Studios presentation. You've undoubtedly heard horror stories, but until you've been inside it, you can't understand the challenge and appeal of Hall H. We're grateful to receive Bryan Young's story of pure geek family. Every comic book reader remembers the first time they encountered Bill Sienkiewicz. Whether it was in Moon Knight, The New Mutants, Elektra: Assassin, or a recent variant for Absolute Batman, Sienkiewicz's art smacks your eyeballs and demands your attention. You probably weren't sure about it at first, but as your eyes refused to leave, you discovered new wonders capable in this medium called comic books. Like the first time Sienkiewicz saw a Neal Adams Superman instead of a Curt Swan Superman, his art stirs discomfort in those who've stewed in the routine. This week we return from San Diego Comic-Con International, and we've brought Bill Sienkiewicz with us. The convention premiered the trailer for his new documentary, That Polish Guy, directed by Remsy Atassi and produced by Sal Abbinanti. We were granted a sneak peek at an early edit, and it's jammed with creators expressing their admiration for Sienkiewicz. Sienkiewicz exploded on the scene and has continued to evolve his style to this very day. We excitedly spoke to him about his relationship with comics, how discomfort is part of the deal when it comes to a lifelong passion for comics, whether you're on the artist's side of things or the reader's side, and how That Polish Guy attempts to shape his story. In an effort to relate our San Diego Comic-Con experience beyond our own perspective, we also invited Badr Milligan, host of The Short Box, onto the show to explain the convention's particular vibe from a newbie's viewpoint. A Dream Shelved—Then Finally Opened Kara, a self-described lifelong reader and third-generation librarian, relocated to Woodstock in 2019. Although she always fantasized about owning a bookstore, she didn't initially know how to launch a business. However, after participating in a local leadership program, she discovered a network of small-business support. Encouraged and equipped, she went for it. Her leap of faith resulted in Bonfire Bookstore & Yarnery, which opened on June 6 and was immediately embraced by the local community. The location on Main Street, she says, has only added to its warm, inviting personality. More Than Books: A Store Built on Connection While Bonfire carries a beautifully curated selection of fiction, nonfiction, local history, and children's titles, it offers much more than traditional bookstore staples. Kara intentionally stocks puzzles, games, gifts, craft kits, and an impressive selection of yarn, all chosen with a shared mission: helping people rediscover offline joy and authentic connection. She explains that the lingering effects of COVID, paired with the omnipresence of social media, have made people lonelier than ever. "So many people want to get off their phones and do something with their hands," she notes. Yarn enthusiasts, knitters, crocheters, and crafters visit regularly—and Kara even teaches classes in-store thanks to the building's generous space. Why Yarn Belongs in a Bookstore Yarn may seem like an unexpected addition to a bookstore, but Kara makes it feel natural. She has been knitting and crocheting for over 20 years, and she quickly discovered that readers and stitchers share similar "cozy hobby" energy. Moreover, diversifying her inventory helps the shop remain sustainable in an era dominated by online megaretailers. The yarn department has since become one of the store's most vibrant community-building features, complete with beginner classes launching again in January. Plush chairs, a welcoming sofa, a whimsically decorated fireplace, and a children's reading nook encourage visitors to linger. Today, we're revisiting our 2023 conversation with Robert De Leo of Stone Temple Pilots. ABOUT ROBERT DE LEORobert De Leo is best known for his work in Stone Temple Pilots. Collaborating with lyricist and vocalist Scott Weiland, Robert wrote or co-wrote the music for many of the group's classic songs, including “Plush,” “Creep,” “Wicked Garden,” “Vaseline,” “Interstate Love Song,” “Big Bang Baby,” “Down,” “Hollywood Bitch,” and “Between the Lines.” Outside of their music in Stone Temple Pilots, Robert and his brother Dean have also written and recorded songs for their band Talk Show, as well as Army of Anyone, which is a collaboration with Filter frontman Richard Patrick. Since the death of Weiland and subsequent lead singer Chester Bennington, the De Leo brothers and drummer Eric Kretz continue to make music as Stone Temple Pilots with current vocalist Jeff Gutt. At the time of our conversation, Robert had released his debut solo album, Lessons Learned, a deeply personal collection of original songs.
