POPULARITY
In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles sits down with Ben Daughtry and Jonathan Palmer of Love Jones — the Louisville-born, LA-based band that has been crafting their unique blend of lounge, soul, pop, and sharp-witted storytelling for over three decades. The conversation kicks off with a shared love of live music, as both Ben and Jonathan trace their concert-going roots back to the same unlikely starting point: Van Halen. Ben recalls sneaking into a show at 14, way too young to be there, watching a then-unknown Van Halen open for Black Sabbath and feeling like "a bomb going off." Jonathan recounts his own Van Halen baptism at Freedom Hall in Louisville on the Women and Children First Invasion Tour — complete with $7.50 festival seating and his mother taking notes in the stands. From there, the episode becomes a wide-ranging tour through decades of live music obsession. The guys swap stories about Ted Nugent crowd surges, jumping on stage with GWAR in New Orleans, playing congas with Tool at an early Lollapalooza, and watching Rage Against the Machine move 60,000 people. Jonathan shares privileged industry moments — seeing The Rolling Stones at a 600-capacity room in New York alongside Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Questlove, and catching Nine-Inch Nails at The Troubadour when they felt "too big for the building." The conversation is fueled by genuine enthusiasm, with each story triggering another in a kind of joyful avalanche of rock and roll memory. The second half of the episode turns to the band's own story — from their residency at Largo on Fairfax, where David Bowie once sat quietly in a booth and Tool's crew became regulars, to their unexpected appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album Here's to the Losers. Charles and the guys dig into the Cocktail Nation moment of the '90s, the making of their new album The Greatest Show on Earth — written during COVID jam sessions in a Louisville warehouse with crickets chirping and trains passing — and the cinematic, Gil Evans-influenced sound that ties its six expansive tracks together. The episode closes with the band expressing hope to get back on the road, a shout-out to their partnership with Whiskey Thief Distillery, and a tease of possible activity around the 30th anniversary of the film Swingers, on whose soundtrack Love Jones famously appeared. In this episode of A Breath of Fresh Air, Sandy Kaye sits down with Verdine White, the legendary bassist and founding member of Earth, Wind & Fire, to explore the remarkable life and career of one of music's most dynamic performers.Verdine reflects on growing up in a large and deeply musical family in Chicago, where jazz, blues and rhythm and blues filled the house and helped shape his earliest influences. He talks about the enormous impact of his older brother Maurice White, whose vision, talent and guidance would not only help launch Verdine's career, but also lay the foundation for one of the most innovative and beloved bands in popular music history. The conversation traces Verdine's musical beginnings, from studying upright bass and classical technique to learning from legendary bassist Louis Satterfield, before making the life-changing move to Los Angeles to join Maurice in a bold new musical venture. Verdine shares vivid memories of those early days in LA, the relentless rehearsals, the long road before success arrived, and the determination it took for Earth, Wind & Fire to build a sound unlike anything audiences had heard before.Sandy and Verdine also discuss the formation of the band, the transition from the Salty Peppers to Earth, Wind & Fire, and the unique musical vision that blended funk, soul, jazz, R&B, gospel, pop and African influences into a groundbreaking new style. Verdine explains how the group's signature sound evolved, what it was like working alongside Maurice as both brother and bandleader, and how the discipline and musicianship of the group helped turn a bold idea into an international phenomenon. The episode also explores Earth, Wind & Fire's rise to fame, their years of hard work before the breakthrough, their signing with Columbia Records under Clive Davis, and the collaborative songwriting process that helped produce some of their unforgettable music. Verdine speaks about co-writing songs, the pressure and excitement of recording so prolifically, and the joy of being part of a band whose songs — including classics like September and Fantasy — continue to resonate around the world.Along the way, he opens up about his admiration for Maurice White, the emotional tribute song Superman, and the enduring bond they shared. He also reflects on touring, longevity, performing for President Obama at the White House, and what it means to still bring joy to audiences after decades in music.Warm, insightful and full of music history, this is a conversation about family, discipline, vision, legacy and groove — and about the man whose bass playing helped make Earth, Wind & Fire one of the greatest bands of all time.
What I Know About Earth, Wind & FireWhat I know about Earth, Wind & FireI thought could be told in under a minute,But I was wrong. This group has countless accolades, awards, achievements….And then there's the “ME” relationship.I was introduced to Earth, Wind & Fire in 1975when I noticed the “That's The Way Of The World” albumresting against my old man's record player.Pop (my dad) didn't buy albums,he usually would buy “45's”…or singles—Some of you may not know what a “45” is,and because he was a working musician, pop only purchased music to learn the song.Pop was studying the entire album. That told me that there was something special about this group.Earth, Wind & Fire created “Grown Folks Music,”and in their “hey day,” that didn't work for me.But, it was great for everyone else. The Rags to Riches story of Maurice White and his band, originally named “The Salty Peppers,”came from humble beginnings. From Memphis to Chicago to California,The recruiting of brothers Verdine & Freddie,The alliance with Collaborator Charles Stepney,The addition of Al McKay, Larry Dunn who introduced Philip Bailey.Because of the practices of Maurice Whiteone by one, each walked away. Ending Maurice Whiteand Earth Wind & Fire's Hit Parade.Well, Philip Bailey returned, but not the hits. Before Maurice White diedHe built something great and easy to enjoy,And to learn more,Press play.

That's the Way of the World (1975) is often considered Earth, Wind & Fire's defining statement, blending soul, funk, jazz, and gospel into a sound that was both deeply spiritual and irresistibly danceable. Released at the height of the band's creative powers, the album embodies the vision of Maurice White, who sought to create music that was uplifting, universal, and transcendent. With its mix of lush horn arrangements, intricate rhythms, and soaring vocals, the record stands as both a cultural touchstone of the 1970s and one of the most celebrated soul albums of all time. The album opens with its iconic title track, a slow-burning ballad filled with hope and wisdom, setting a tone of reflection and uplift that carries through the record. From there, the band moves into radiant, high-energy funk with tracks like Shining Star—a #1 hit that brought them mainstream success—while songs like Reasons showcase the group's ability to balance groove with tenderness and emotional depth. Each track contributes to a greater whole, with messages of unity, love, and perseverance woven seamlessly into the music.Beyond its commercial success, That's the Way of the World has endured because of its ability to inspire. It is as much a philosophical statement as it is an album, speaking to universal struggles and joys while delivering them through some of the most polished and innovative arrangements of its era. More than just a collection of songs, it represents Earth, Wind & Fire's belief in music as a healing, guiding force—and remains one of the greatest achievements in the history of R&B and soul.Listen to the album on Apple MusicListen to the album on SpotifyWhat did you think of this album? What I know about Earth, Wind & FireI thought could be told in under a minute,But I was wrong.

Dennis is joined via Zoom by two women from the documentary The World According to Allee Willis; director Alexis Spraic and Executive Producer Prudence Fenton who was also Allee's life partner. Allee Willis, who passed away on Christmas Day in 2019, is primarily known as a a songwriter (Earth Wind & Fire's "September" and "Boogie Wonderland," the Friends theme song, The Color Purple musical) but she was also an accomplished visual artist, collector of kitsch, wild party thrower and internet entrepreneur. Alexis talks about what drew her to Allee as a film subject, sorting through Allee's six storage units of material and how she's tried to incorporate Allee's motto 'If you have a weakness, turn it into a hook" into her own life. Prudence talks about the exhausting prep that went into Allee's legendary house parties, the hurt caused by Allee's father not allowing Allee to be herself and that time a few years ago when the Rembrandts reached out to ask Allee for a share of the "Friends" theme song royalties...years after the show had left the air. Other topics include: Allee's wide array of friends, Allee's foray's into performing, the scandalously low number of female producers in the music business, how Allee dealt with disappointment and the moments in the filmmaking process where they really felt like Allee was guiding them.
Songs are rated on the yachtski scale, including tracks by Earth Wind & Fire, Sister Sledge, and Steely Dan.
Whether you're drawn to her soulful, powerhouse vocals, raw, heartfelt lyrics, or infectious grooves, one thing is for sure—Alex Nester is an artist you will remember. You can't help but be drawn to her when she sings from such a deep and genuine place. Her music doesn't just reach your ears, it reaches your heart. Channeling the retro artists of the 60's and 70's, Alex blends soul, funk, and r&b and delivers her songs with honesty and meaning. Alex believes in the great power and beauty of music, and she felt it firsthand through her battle with cancer at 16 years old. Along with excellent treatment, the love of family and friends, and the grace of God, Alex credits music with helping save her life. With a grateful heart she went on to release two critically acclaimed solo albums, and opened as a solo artist for such acts as Earth Wind & Fire, Chicago, Rachel Platten, Evelyn “Champagne” King, and Dave Mason. Through the years she has also worked with Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, The Fifth Dimension, Tito Jackson (of Jackson 5 fame), and Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, most recently touring as a guest artist with Carlos Santana.
We slid into some newsy topics today ... but it took awhile. Blame Lionel.
Welcome to Episode #112 of "The Other Side of the Bell", a podcast brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. Email sales@dillonmusic to schedule an appointment! About the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble Album "Homage" The recording scene in Los Angeles has a long history of great and highly versatile trumpet playing. For the most part, though, these trumpet players rarely get a chance to be featured. In 1957, Tutti Camarata arranged and produced a record called Tutti's Trumpets that featured some of the top session trumpet players in Los Angeles at that time. That was over 60 years ago. Wayne Bergeron and Jeff Bunnell started talking about doing another recording that would feature some of the current session trumpet players here in Los Angeles. Wayne suggested recording a trumpet ensemble CD to Jeff and they loved the idea and thought a choir of trumpets would work well. With that, the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble came into being. In choosing the music Jeff arranged for this CD, he wanted to pay tribute to some of the film composers who are part of the Los Angeles recording scene (and who write so well for the trumpet), and also pay tribute to some of the great trumpet players of the past and present. Jerry Hey graciously wrote the arrangment for the last track, the iconic Al Jarreau tune "Roof Garden". Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble Members Jeff Bunnell Wayne Bergeron Jon Lewis Dan Fornero Marissa Benedict Dan Rosenboom Rob Schaer Larry Hall Dan Savant About Wayne Bergeron Wayne Bergeron is enjoying a career as one of the most sought-after musicians in the world. Studio sessions, film dates, international touring, jazz concerts, guest appearances, and clinics keep him busy not only in his hometown of Los Angeles but worldwide. Born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1958, Bergeron came to California at age one. He originally started on French horn but switched to trumpet in seventh grade where he found a natural upper register ability. Bergeron credits his junior high and high school teachers, Ron Savitt and Bob Smith, for molding his talent into practical working skills. Bergeron first caught the ear of many when he landed the lead trumpet chair with Maynard Ferguson's band in 1986. Bergeron can be heard on Maynard's recordings of Body and Soul, Big Bop Nouveau, Brass Attitude, and The One and Only Maynard Ferguson. Bergeron demonstrates daily why Maynard remarked, “Wayne is the most musical lead trumpet player I've had on my band.” As a sideman, Bergeron's list of recording credits reads like a “who's who” in contemporary jazz and pop, running the stylistic gamut from Ray Charles to Green Day. Other names include Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Barbra Streisand, Michael Buble, Indina Menzel, Leslie Oden Jr., Herb Alpert, The Jonas Brothers, Burt Bacharach, The Dirty Loops, Seth MacFarlane, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Seal, Diana Krall, Tito Puente, Christina Aguilera, Dianne Reeves, Michael Bolton, Earth Wind & Fire, The Pussy Cat Dolls, My Chemical Romance, The Mars Volta, Chicago, Rosemary Cloony, Diane Schuur, Barry Manilow, Lee Ann Womack, Lou Rawls, Eric Marienthal, Kenny G., and David Benoit. Bergeron's second CD, Plays Well With Others, released on the Concord Jazz label in 2007, was met with the same acclaim. Bergeron's most current (and personal favorite) CD, Full Circle, was released in January of 2016. Bergeron performs various events for the Hollywood Bowl summer season. He has done guest appearances with the L.A. Philharmonic, The New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, Taiwan Symphony, and Tokyo Philharmonic. Bergeron was mentored by legends Uan Rasey, Bobby Shew, Warren Luening, Gary Grant, Rick Baptist, and George Graham. Bergeron hopes to inspire a new generation of young players and enjoys his work as a clinician and educator. “Nothing makes me feel more accomplished than hearing a young musician say that I inspired them or had a positive influence on their life. For me, that's the real payday.” Bergeron is currently on faculty at California State University Northridge.
