The Long Thread Podcast
Hazel Tindall, World's Fastest Knitter

The Long Thread Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 26, 2025 52:53

Hazel Tindall can't remember a time before she knew how to knit. Hazel learned to knit when knitting for sale was the only way that women earned money, when a job outside the home in town was too far to travel. Although her mother found knitting a chore, Hazel liked it, not only knitting sweater yokes for sale but exploring yarns and designs from outside her local sphere. When knitting was work, knitters put down their needles on Sundays, but in time knitting became a pleasure rather than a job for Hazel. She started knitting every day of the week. Eventually she began selling for sale not just sweaters but also designs for sweaters, vests, gloves, hats, and other colorwork designs. Loving color, she avoids sludgy color combinations in favor of bright hues. One member of the Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers & Dyers read about a World's Fastest Knitter competition, and the group believed that they could do better than the current standard. Hazel was found to be the fastest knitter in the group, so off she went to the contest, winning the title. Later, she traveled to Minnesota to defend the title; to her knowledge, she hasn't been beaten! This week I am delighted to be joined by Martyn, host of the Knit365 YouTube channel. I loved speaking to Martyn about his journey from beginning as an accidental knitter, having made an off-the-cuff promise to his grandmother, to a daily knitter with a successful YouTube Channel about his adventures in yarn.It was great to hear how Martyn has discovered the therapeutic benefits of knitting along the way, how he loves the satisfaction of making progress and completing things, and how he now has a knitting project within easy reach wherever he is. It was really interesting to hear how he intentially uses knitting to manage stress and to get his reflections on being a man who knits.-------------

Hour 1: The Giants lost to the Cowboys yet again and are now 1-3. Daniel Jones played well but they scored zero touchdowns again. The Giants receivers had another few key drops that cost them a chance to win. The Giants had the ball for almost 37 minutes. Why is Daboll kicking FGs? 4th and goal on the Cowboys 4 and your trot out your kicker? That's zero touchdowns in the first two home games of the season for two straight years. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with the highlights of Cowboys/Giants. Brian Daboll talked about not cashing in in the red zone. Mike McCarthy said road division wins are ‘the best'. The Jets are getting ready for the Broncos and we heard from CJ Mosley. The Yankees clinched the A.L. East with a win over the Orioles. The A's played their final game in Oakland and Jerry has the final call. In the final segment of the hour, we took some calls from ticked off Giants fans. Hour 2: We started the 7am hour with Giants fans who are not happy this morning. Boomer said in other countries, they call morning shows, ‘breakfast shows'. A caller said Daniel Jones just can't throw deep. Gio said there isn't a negative Giants statistic that would surprise him at this point. Boomer called it a ‘misery Friday' for Giants fans. East last night with John Sterling on the call as Aaron Judge hit #58. In the final segment of the hour, Eddie is back from his ‘Knitter's retreat' in Utah. Hour 3: The Evan & Tiki Show wondered if Boomer would rather play golf on Monday or watch the Mets/Braves series. We took more calls from ticked off Giants fans including one who said there is plenty of blame to go around for this one. Where does this leave the Giants at the end of the season if they have 7 wins or so? Are they cleaning house? A caller thinks Boomer is crazy for thinking the Giants can win 8 games. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the sounds of Bob Papa and Carl Banks as the Giants lost to the Cowboys again. Brian Daboll talked about losing a close game. The Yankees clinched the A.L. East with an easy win over the Orioles with John Sterling on the call. What is Gerrit Cole trying to say in this clip that Jerry has? Yesterday was the last game ever in Oakland for the A's. Ricky Henderson isn't sad because he has a lot of money. And the White Sox refuse to lose, winning their third straight. In the final segment of the hour, big spreads are not being covered very often this season in the NFL. We looked at the over/under for Lions/Seahawks. The Commanders/Cardinals have the highest over/under for the week. Hour 4 : One of the big games this week is the Vikings at the Packers and Jordan Love is playing. All of the undefeated teams are on the road in the NFL. Steve in Atlanta checks in and there's not much going on weatherwise except for some rain. He also said the sports radio station in Atlanta is willing to host a WFAN host in their luxury box on Monday. We took more calls from angry Giants fans after last night's performance. They have the Seahawks in Seattle next Sunday. Jerry returns for his final update of the day and starts with the sounds of the Giants losing to the Cowboys yet again last night. We heard some postgame sound from Brian Daboll among others. CJ Mosley talked about his chances of playing Sunday against the Broncos. Bo Nix talked about going up against Aaron Rodgers this week. The Yankees had no problem with the Orioles on their way to winning the A.L. East. Aaron Judge said the Yankees are going to party hard. The Moment of The Day has Gio doing an impression of Chris Carlin on the call for Rutgers. In the final segment of the week, our NFL Picks!

The latest (and apparently last) studio album from the LA legends is a worthy addition to their catalog. It's filled with everything we've come to love from the band since their debut almost forty years ago. John and Exene's autobiographical lyrics, Billy Zoom's unmistakable tempo drenched Gretsch and DJ's Bonebrake's splashy hi-hat all shine across ten bangers that speed by at a brisk 29 minutes. We've dedicated more episodes to X than to any other band (six including the to great Knitter's first LP) and this won't be the last.     Recommended Listening   X on the HHPP:   EP3: "Wild Gift” https://huntsmanhill.com/2016/11/23/64/   EP86: “Los Angeles” https://huntsmanhill.com/2019/01/22/ep86-x-los-angeles/   EP121: “Alphabetland” https://huntsmanhill.com/2020/05/03/ep121-x-alphabetland-soundtrack-to-the-apocalypse-vol-7/   EP180: “Under the Big Black Sun” https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/06/26/ep180-x-under-the-big-black-sun/   EP218: The Knitters “Poor Little Critter on the Road” https://huntsmanhill.com/2023/04/16/ep218-the-knitters-poor-little-critter-on-the-road/   EP256: “More Fun in the New World”  https://huntsmanhill.com/2024/02/18/ep256-x-more-fun-in-the-new-world/   HHPP Playlist Track: “Ruby Church”  https://open.spotify.com/track/3oVfMZgksGM7G3himHLAiV?si=bbe8ae017a3d4712   HHPP Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7tFBWn0UFkdOEMf67TRD6W?si=vzllkbDwSEmfZFlj02GLRw Academy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-c   Omertà 68:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/6dfiCa0qTlbPQUrqtIkStS?si=6SCjNtXbSO2xRBDuBKJelQ MidCityThree:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/2LW7wWSHd9bi3n3Q5N8i35?si=4UnUthYNR4K9FMv2dqFOVw   huntsmanhill.com instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill
