But what people may not know is that Dragon Quest, a Japanese game, was heavily influenced by Wizardry - Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, an American role-playing game released in 1981, and I played this, too, as a kid, which makes me old, and I'm still angry about that. So make me happy already, and pitch me an American video game, movie, book or TV show that would be massively improved by a Japanese take on it. Tell me what would be changed and why it would be better, and preferably, without being racist at all. Because that will make me REALLY angry. Best pitch wins and gets two episode points. Inglourious Basterds (2009), written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, revolves around two plots to assassinate Nazi leaders during the closing years of World War II. One plot centers on a secret band of Jewish-American soldiers under the command of Ltn. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt)—the “Basterds”—who terrorize Nazis. The other involves Shosanna Dreyfus (Melanie Laurent), a young Jewish woman who narrowly escapes death at the hands of notorious “Jew hunter” Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) and flees to Paris where she runs a cinema under a false identity. The plot lines converge at the Paris cinema where the Basterds and Shosanna are each separately plotting to kill Hitler and other Nazi leaders while they are attending the premiere of a German propaganda film. The film utilizes alternate history to explore themes surrounding the pursuit of justice against the perpetrators of mass atrocities and the complex relationship between law and vengeance. Leur but ? We discuss standout performances and the film's controversial historical narrative.Hugo shares his admiration for Tarantino's blend of dark humor and WWII themes, while James raises concerns about historical accuracy but values the film's artistic approach to revenge. We explore character motivations, particularly Hans Landa's moral ambiguity, and examine key scenes that highlight tension. Kat and I have BOTH seen this movie before but apropos of odd-looking salutes this week, we've broken our one rule. And we got a word for that kinda odd in English. It's called "suspicious". Now, take your wiener schnitzel lickin' finger and hit the play button- it's 'Inglourious Basterds'!
On this week's episode, I'm joined by Bill Ryan and Dennis Cozzalio to discuss their contribution to the new Arrow Limited Edition release of Inglourious Basterds on 4K. The booklet features a blog-era (remember blogs?) conversation about the film that occurred when it was initially released, in addition to, among other things, a postcard with a recipe for apple strudel (whip cream NOT optional). It's a great set with lots of extras and I highly recommend picking it up if you can find a copy. We discussed the initial response to the film and our own feelings about it some 15 years or so later, as well as that weirdly exciting moment of online film criticism. If you enjoyed the episode, I hope you share it with a friend!
Brad Pitt takes no prisoners in Question Tarantino's high octane World War 2 revenge fantasy, Inglourious Basterds. As war rages in Europe, a Nazi scalping squad of American soldiers, known to their enemy as “The Basterds,” is on a daring mission to take down the leaders of the Third Reich. Bursting with action, hair trigger suspense and a machine gun spray of killer dialogue, Inglourious Basterds is another Tarantino masterpiece. The Weinstein Company, A Band Apart and The Church of Tarantino Podcast presents the Inglourious Basterds 15th Anniversary Celebration. In war, a bastards work is never done. Once Upon a Time in Nazi-Occupied France....A beloved filmmaker (Quentin Tarantino) directed his first epic period piece just LOOSELY (very loosely) based upon true events....meaning World War II. We follow several different characters all within France at the time including Shoshanna (Melanie Laurent) a Jewish movie theater owner, Lt. Aldo Raines (Brad Pitt), the leader of a small roving grope of Allied soldiers known as "The Basterds," Archie Hickock (Michael Fassbender) a sharp British soldier on a very dangerous spy mission, and the evil Colonel Hans Landa who is hunting for all of them. Landa is played by Christoph Walz in a breakout performance which would win him the first of two Oscars. (He would win his other for a supporting performance in the next Tarantino film.) As their stories converge, we witness plenty of treachery, deceit, and a generous share of Nazi scalps along the way. :o This film came out fifteen years ago this month, was a box office smash, and was nominated for eight Oscars including Best Picture.Send us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
