Moms Moving On: Navigating Divorce, Single Motherhood & Co-Parenting.
How the hell am I going to survive after divorce? Can I do this? Can I take care of myself? And what about co-parenting? If you've ever asked yourself any of these questions, you've come to the right place, because Maria Hunt, the brains behind popular Instagram account Unicorn Moms, shares her story and more. Maria is a single mama of two boys living in California. After leaving the corporate world, she founded Unicorn Moms, an online and real world social community conceived and created to give and get the real-scoop on anything and everything “Mom,” from the miraculous benefits of coconut oil to the number of shots it takes to ovulate. "It’s truly a movement of moms who fully support one another; we do not allow “judgeiness,” “mean-moms,” or negativity. More than just moms talking about mom-stuff, we also love to meet, have fun and laugh! We have grown to over 300K across all social media and have state wide groups as well. Come and join our community."
Perfect moms and unicorns have one thing in common: They don't exist. That mantra has brought together a huge community of women who are sick of the judgmental bickering that plagues typical "mommy groups" on social platforms like Facebook. Alli and Jen speak with Maria Hunt, the founder of Unicorn Moms, about her inspiration for starting a completely new kind of online support community for mothers. Spoiler alert: It involves a lot of drinking. Hunt explains the rules of her invite-only group (which is 34,000 strong), and how it's become a worldwide support system for women struggling to live up to the unrealistic standards of motherhood imposed online. Every mom knows the importance of finding your tribe. Juggling careers, motherhood, and marriage while maintaining your sense of self is so important. But it can be difficult to do it all without the help of likeminded women! What they say is true: it takes a village. And now that village lives online. Maria Hunt is a tech entrepreneur who got her start back in the early days of Myspace. Now, she’s the founder of Unicorn Moms, an online community with more than 70,000 women. In addition to an active Facebook group, she's also launched the platform's mobile app to allow moms to embrace their individuality and to connect with other unicorn moms in their areas through increased geolocation capabilities. Both the Unicorn Moms sites and app cover topics that moms want to talk about, ranging from their favorite deals, cocktails and recipes, to airing their dirty laundry, or even seeking advice on their career goals and marital challenges. Listen in as Maria breaks down the myth of the perfect mom and shares why there is power in confiding in one another, supporting one another, and laughing through the challenges of motherhood online as a community. In This Episode The illusion of the perfect mom Why it’s important to support a woman’s individuality outside of motherhood The reason people love connecting through online communities How to build an online community made up of brand champions The skills every entrepreneur needs to succeed Quotes in This Episode “We're all struggling in this together. We all got shit going on. We're all somehow killing it at this mom thing, so let's just embrace it and support one another.” —Maria Hunt “We're social human beings, everyone. We love to be a part of something, we love to communicate and be around people, and I think that's one of the big things with any successful business. I think there has to have that social aspect, because it's very, very important.” —Maria Hunt “I have this platform, I would be doing a huge disservice if I didn't use it for good. That's what I love about having my own business, is that I'm doing good for these women, making them better as wives, as mothers, as sisters, as friends, because of the community and the support.” —Maria Hunt “What I felt, and opinions and view on certain aspects of anything have changed within the last five years. I'm like, ‘Wow, I really thought this way about this?’ You grow. It's an evolution, and I think as we get older, we get better. We get better in everything,” —Maria Hunt “Patience, drive, hustle—those are the key elements. You can't be afraid, you can't have fear. I think, a lot of the times, fear stops us. We're like, ‘We can't. I can't do that.’ I just think you got to do it, you've got to have it in you. No risk, no reward.” —Maria Hunt Resources Unicorn Moms Become a Unicorn Mom on Facebook Connect with Unicorn Moms on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube.
Maria Hunt, in her early twenties always had that entrepreneurial spirit and wanted to do something to help people. That's just been her nature as she’s loved working for people. She had been a horrible student in her student days barely graduating, but once she started working with these huge technology companies that's where it sparked her interests in learning. She learnt everything there is to learn about business and entrepreneurship from her once upon a time, co-workers and bosses. “When you're working in a company, you have the social aspect, you're working with people but when you're a non-working mother, it's more isolating and lonely when you're just home with your kids.” Maria worked for MySpace and other Tech startups that inspired in her, the social aspects. MySpace connected people, which is especially what mothers, ultimately need. It was when Maria found these other mom groups, only to find there was mom shaming, being mean, or judgmental at one another. She thought, she's getting older, and there is no time to do all of that, so she wanted to create this community of women who inspire, who look out for each other, who support, who loved to laugh, who love to have a good time and do not judge each other because, all women are going through all of it together. It is then she created this community Unicornmoms, now almost 70,000 members where moms can have real discussions, a fun time AND even a dirty mind without any judgments or cattiness. In this episode you will learn: Where did it all start, what was the early on vision and what was the process that took Maria from where she was to, where she is today How Maria was able to sustain and contain the equally challenging entrepreneurial vision she had when she started The differences of working as a high-level executive at a technology company, and being a mom The inspiration to create Unicornmoms What role do the parents play on the upbringing of kids What role does the father figure play in raising effective children Is the stay-at-home parenting the most effective way to raise a loving child? What would it need of women to own their own power and to step into it and realize they are limitless, with no boundaries What did her kids teach Maria about herself and what did she learn through being a parent Is there a question for a Mom or Dad to ask themselves daily to remind themselves of the way to be the best parent for their kids How can a Man /Husband be a best parent in their family How can moms who’ve lost their identities, re-establish their identities and find themselves again so they can find more meaning and fulfillment and live a more empowering lifestyle The App that Maria Hunt created for Unicornmoms and how can that be applicable to Moms and Dads One message of inspiration for the listeners today Resources: www.unicornmoms.com Instagram: unicornmoms Twitter: TheUnicornMomsFacebook: UnicornMoms Tweetables: It's not just about learning about business skills, technical skills, professional skills; it's all about learning about yourself Being a mom is like hard, it's like a 24/7 Communication between the parents is the key; putting your issues aside, you have to be in this together, to benefit the kid It's very important for a son to have a father figure, to be there and to talk to about certain things that he can't talk to his mom The most important thing to raising great kids is, you have to be present you have to be there with your child at least 1 hour a day in a 24 hour cycle Nowadays there are stay-at-home moms that are on their phone constantly while their babies are playing in the playpen or whatever Women need to just get out their comfort zones and take that chance and that risk; then great things will come out Women need to surround themselves with people who'll support them no matter what, in all aspects of their lives We get stuck in a rut, if we lose who we are (identity) because of our kids
