In this powerful episode of The Yoga Therapy Hour, Amy Wheeler sits down with Chris Sax, President of Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH), to discuss one of the most significant transformations in the field of integrative health education: the merger of MUIH into Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDMU). Together, they reflect on the opportunities, challenges, and leadership lessons that come with navigating such a historic transition.Chris shares openly about:· The vision behind the merger and how it positions NDMU as the first comprehensive university in the U.S. with a School of Integrative Health.· The unique opportunities this merger brings for interprofessional collaboration between integrative health programs and conventional disciplines like pharmacy, occupational therapy, nursing, physician assistant studies, and art therapy.· The personal and professional realities of leadership during change—from high-stakes decisions to the very human challenge of guiding teams through uncertainty.· Why cultivating compassionate leadership and emotional steadiness is just as essential as strategy, and how Chris has grown in this area throughout the pandemic and the merger process.· The importance of knowing yourself as a leader—your strengths, your limitations, and the “sweet spot” where passion, skills, and natural wiring intersect.· How to navigate burnout, resilience, and self-regulation while sustaining the long, slow work of higher education leadership.· The future of higher education, why mergers are becoming more common, and how adaptability, possibility-thinking, and resilience will be critical skills for leaders moving forward.Added InsightsThrough stories of self-assessment, professional pivots, and the emotional labor of leadership, Chris offers grounded wisdom about what it takes to lead well in times of uncertainty. She speaks candidly about the loneliness of leadership, the value of knowing your own wiring, and how burnout shows up in subtle ways. Her reflections on ego, failure, and service illuminate a path toward authentic, purpose-driven leadership.Together, Amy and Chris explore: • Why self-awareness is the cornerstone of sustainable leadership • How tools like the FIRO-B helped Chris realize she didn't need to “be like everyone else” • The internal cues that signal burnout—and how to respond to them • The ego's role in both success and failure • How higher education is shifting—and the mindset shifts required to keep up • What it means to lead from service, not selfThis is a conversation about leadership as a practice of svādhyāya (self-inquiry), vairāgya (non-attachment to outcome), and tapas (disciplined effort)—rooted in humility, honesty, and care.Resources & Links Mentioned:· Master of Science in Yoga Therapy at MUIH/NDMU: Learn more - https://muih.edu/academics/yoga-therapy/master-of-science-in-yoga-therapy/· Post-Master's Certificate in Therapeutic Yoga Practices (for licensed healthcare providers): Learn more -  https://muih.edu/academics/yoga-therapy/post-masters-certificate-in-therapeutic-yoga-practices/· Post-Baccalaureate Ayurveda Certification: Learn more - https://muih.edu/academics/ayurveda/post-baccalaureate-ayurveda-certification/· Optimal State Mobile App – for daily check-ins and simple interventions to stay balanced: Visit here - https://optimalstateapp.com/ · Online Community with weekly yoga therapy classes & full class library: Join here - https://theoptimalstate.com/monday-yoga-therapy-clinic/

Many educators associate virtual learning with isolation, disengagement, and students passively staring at screens. But what if the opposite were possible? What if distance learning could be thrilling, social, even addictive—in all the right ways?In this episode, we meet Ben Somers, founder and CEO of Recess.gg, an online platform transforming virtual education into an e-sports-style, team-based experience where students show up because they want to. With live academic games, mentorship, and a thriving virtual economy, Recess builds belonging, identity, and motivation into every challenge. But behind the fun is a serious vision: empowering self-directed learners with the tools—and freedom—they need to thrive.Ben draws from deep experience scaling Synthesis (born from Elon Musk's experimental school) and brings a philosophy rooted in Papert, Dewey, and Montessori to his product design. He argues that engagement is not just a tactic, but an ecosystem built on freedom, community, and purpose.Listeners will learn:Why removing humans from digital learning can kill engagement—and how to bring community back. How Recess balances spontaneity and structure to guide students toward long-term goals. What a “job board for kids” looks like—and how it helps them become creators, not consumers. How AI is being used not to replace human reflection, but to support deeper reflection and mentorship. What it means to design an environment where math is learned like French: fluently, through immersive experience. If you're a virtual school leader, edtech entrepreneur, homeschool parent, or anyone wondering how to make distance learning work better, this episode will challenge your assumptions and show what's possible when engagement is student-driven and purpose-aligned.Episode Links - Recess.gg – Where student agency meets academic gameplay - Seymour Papert – The educational theorist Ben credits as a major influence - Kerbal Space Program – The game teaching kids rocket science and orbital mechanics - Oxford Kids Conference – Where Recess students presented their podcastHost Links - Explore virtual learning resources and programs at CILC.org with Tami Moehring and Allyson Mitchell - Discover global learning experiences at Banyan Global Learning with Seth FleischauerWant to help us reshape distance learning? Automation is reshaping workflows across various industries, from fast food to creative production, prompting a shift towards smaller, trust-based online communities. The discussion centers on the balance between efficiency and maintaining authentic human connections in the age of AI. Kate O'Neill, a tech humanist and founder of Kao Insights, emphasizes the importance of designing automation that empowers individuals rather than detracting from their experiences. The conversation explores how companies can foster meaningful connections while leveraging technology to streamline operations. The podcast highlights the case of McDonald's, which has been experimenting with AI to enhance its operational efficiency. Despite initial setbacks with AI voice systems, McDonald's continues to innovate, focusing on edge computing and predictive analytics to improve customer experience. O'Neill points out that the key to successful automation lies in aligning business objectives with customer expectations, ensuring that technology enhances rather than replaces the human experience. This alignment is crucial for brands to maintain trust and credibility with their customers.O'Neill discusses the significance of measuring meaning in business, suggesting that metrics like net promoter scores can serve as proxies for understanding customer satisfaction. She advocates for a comprehensive view of business models that incorporates meaningful measures at every stage. By doing so, organizations can better align their automation efforts with customer needs, ultimately leading to more impactful outcomes. The conversation underscores the necessity of integrating employee feedback into the process of defining purpose and meaning within organizations. As trust in digital platforms declines, O'Neill stresses the importance of shared values between brands and consumers. Companies must take on a governance role, operating from a place of responsibility and authenticity. By fostering trust through alignment with community values, businesses can create a more sustainable and meaningful relationship with their customers. The episode concludes with a call for organizations to articulate their purpose clearly, enabling employees to make decisions that resonate with both customer and employee experiences.  Gartner Webinar: https://www.gartner.com/en/webinar/689201 All our Sponsors: https://businessof.tech/sponsors/ Do you want the show on your podcast app or the written versions of the stories? University of Zurich Researchers Conducted an AI Persuasion Experiment on Members of This Online Community, Without Consent

Community Signal

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2025 36:17

In March, the volunteer moderators of the Change My View subreddit learned that researchers at the University of Zurich had been covertly conducting an experiment on their community members. By injecting AI-generated comments and posts into conversations, the researchers had wanted to measure the persuasiveness of AI. There was one big problem: They didn't tell community members that they were being experimented on. They didn't tell the community moderators. They didn't tell Reddit's corporate team. Only when they were getting ready to publish, did they disclose their actions. It then became clear that beyond the lack of consent, they had engaged in other questionable behavior: Their AI-written contributions had spanned multiple accounts, pretending to be a rape victim, a trauma counselor focusing on abuse, a Black man opposed to Black Lives Matter, and more. Community response was swift: Overwhelmingly, members were unhappy. The moderators insisted the research not be published. Reddit threatened legal action. Initially, the researchers were defiant but eventually, they apologized and pledged not to publish the research. Change My View volunteer moderator Logan MacGregor joins the show to discuss what went on behind the scenes, plus: The danger of publishing the research Reaction to the apology How AI is going to challenge the idea of trusting an online community Big Quotes Blame the manipulators, not the members and moderators (1:49): “Manipulation in online communities has existed forever. What's happening with [AI is] the believability, the speed at which people can do it. … The fault always rests with the person who chooses to manipulate the community. It's easy to fool people … and to do something that undermines the trust of something. It's harder to build trust.” -Patrick O'Keefe Why a promise not to publish was important (13:21): “From my perspective, I think the things that we wanted the most [from the researchers were] an apology and a promise not to publish. The second was really important because we were concerned that if this was published in a peer-review journal … if it was elevated to a prominent journal, that our community, which is supposed to be a protected human space, would now become just another sandbox for researchers. We felt very strongly that it should not be published. … Unfortunately, it didn't land well.” -Logan MacGregor When a community leader stands for their community, they often stand for all communities (14:52): “When one community person – a volunteer, a host, a person in this line of work – stands up for their community, they stand up for all communities.” -Patrick O'Keefe Just because bad comments exist online doesn't mean new ones won't cause harm (20:10): “So much of what [the researchers] did to try to prevent harm was to say ‘comments like this happen all the time online, we don't think that it's going to cause individual trauma.' We kind of dispute that because some of the comments are [you] pretending to be a trauma counselor and maybe that could actually cause some harm. … I don't think they thought enough about community impact until after the community screamed ‘ouch.'” -Logan MacGregor You can't just blame AI for this (22:52): “One thing that's really special about Change My View is that it's a human space; it's a decidedly human space. … The University of Zurich is a decidedly human space. What I think is so insidious about AI is it's caused people to behave in ways that I don't know we would have, without the stupid thinking machines. Because it's a toxic influence. Unlike the bots that are invading us daily, that we're constantly shutting down. … “That hurts a little bit more than just dealing with bots, because this wasn't just bots. These are people interacting with other people, and there was a human element there. The researchers are real people. I'm a real person. This happened between real people, and it wasn't just AI.” -Logan MacGregor How did the community respond when the experiment was disclosed? (24:47): “I would say there was this collective outrage [from the community]. … It was a unique and singular violation of the ethos of the sub, and it was especially palpable because there are a lot of researchers and research-affiliated people that are fond of the sub. It seemed like: We protect national parks, and we have national monuments – these protected spaces – and it almost felt on that level. Of all the places to do this, why Change My View?” -Logan MacGregor Researchers can help online communities in this moment, but not if they can't be trusted (34:13): “One of the things that I worry about when it comes to AI is it's probably going to chip away … at this idea of having protected online spaces, because if in-person conversations are the only way that you can validate that you're not talking to a robot, then this thing that we created called the internet, it's going to cease to have value at all. “That's the fear, and I have hope that we're going to be able to figure out a way to get past that challenge, but I'm scratching my head as to how we would do that. The true tragedy in this whole piece is that the very people that I think are best equipped to help us navigate that space are now distrusted because of this experiment. We need to heal that, and I don't know how that's going to happen.” -Logan MacGregor About Logan MacGregor Logan MacGregor is a member of the volunteer mod team on r/changemyview.
