After a year hiatus due to the pandemic, the All-American Soap Box Derby is back at Derby Downs. Racers from all around the country will compete in the events, though it is restricted to JUST the United States for this year due to travel concerns. Mark Gerberich is the CEO of the All-American Soap Box Derby, and he joined the Ray Horner Morning Show to preview the schedule, from Wednesday's trials to the main event on Saturday. Mark was joined on the phone by Erin Donovan, a Philadelphia native and two-time derby winner, and she talked about her history of racing and her experiences taking home the trophy.

After much thought, and due to large crowds of people from all ends of the earth, they couldn’t risk having the event this year, according to Mark Gerberich. 4:44 - A bill is floating around congress set out to protect workers when they head back to work. Rep. Tavia Galonski talked about the possibility of this bill getting passed. 10:22 - Though businesses and much of Ohio is reopening, the lockdown has had an effect on Americans’ mental health. Dr. Toni Cooper is a local psychologist, and she talked about dealing with stress and how to push away bad behavior that resulted from the shutdown. 15:22 - So you were let go from your job or forced out of work due to the pandemic, and whether or not you received a stimulus check, you haven’t worked for ten weeks. And now your rent is due, yet you don’t have the money to pay it. What happens? Steve McGarrity is the executive director at the Community Legal Aid Services, and if you’re going through this, he is here to help. 20:33 - We talked earlier about farmers markets, so we revisit that topic with Nora Logsdon from Meals on Wheels.

Ray, Jeanne, and Tony talked about the legacy of Perot, mainly how his run in ’92 changed the course of politics. 8:29 - A Michigan-based company Beaumont Health has acquired Summa Health System, though Summa will keep its name. Dr. Cliff Deveny, president and CEO at Summa, talked to Ray about what will change and what will remain the same during and after this transition. 16:32 - Northeast Ohio has been abuzz of late, from the MLB All-Star Game to the Bridgestone Senior Players this week, which leads into next week’s All-American Soap Box Derby. :17 - The big story this Monday morning was the massive amounts of flooding in southwestern Summit County. Copley roads got hit hard, and Barberton was under a flood watch on Sunday. Mayor Bill Judge talked about Barberton’s preventative measures and what roads are closed. 4:52 - Barber Road is one of the streets closed due to high water. Norton mayor Mike Zita provided some insight. 8:12 - Switching gears here to another hot topic on folks’ minds: CBD. Cleveland Clinic-Akron General’s Dr. Tim Brown joined the show to talk about the fact and fiction revolving around CBD, THC, hemp, and marijuana. 15:01 - A big trade in the NBA occurred with the Pelicans’ Anthony Davis heading west to join LeBron James with the Lakers. Ray and Tony touched on that move and why the Lakers, Knicks, and Bulls have not been sexy destinations for players this last decade. 20:57 - All-American Soap Box Derby president Mark Gerberich came on late in the show to discuss the three newest members of the derby hall of fame.

Ray and John talked about the tournament heading to Firestone Country Club that will replace the Bridgestone Invitational, as well as the state of the NBA, the life of Frank Robinson, and Coach K. 8:33 - Mayor Dan Horrigan released his budget for 2019, and he talked about the impact Issue 4 will have on the city. Horrigan also talked to Ray about the cyber attack from weeks back and Russ Neal’s idea for a cloud-based system. 15:59 - It’s 2019, and the perception and stigma of marijuana isn’t what it used to be. In fact, it seems to be more accepted in the culture now. But can it be a gateway drug, or is alcohol still the cause and effect? The panel debates. 33:33 - The All-American Soap Box Derby isn’t just about making a car and rolling down a hill. They’ve been very innovative as far as getting students interested in STEM and other after school programs, which is what Derby president and CEO Mark Gerberich mentioned this morning.

:17 - The PBA is back at AMF Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn, and the morning show took in the sights and sounds from the tournament. Tony Mazur had the pleasure of sitting down with a founding member of the PBA, Carmen Salvino. Carmen talked a little bit about his technique and how he approaches the game like a physics equation. 9:48 - Speaking of bowling, Mark Gerberich happens to be in the bowling hall of fame, and he stopped by the studio to talk about his days at the alleys. If Mark’s name sounds familiar, he’s also the president of the All-American Soap Box Derby. 19:00 - Scott Wynn is our movie guy, and he went over what’s opening this weekend in theaters. 21:10 - With every offseason, Major League Baseball seems to throw up some proposals to shorten games and tighten some loose ends. However, baseball purists have not been fans of these proposals, and the morning show panel happen to include a few of those said purists. 37:42 - Remember the Akron Racers? Well, with the money and community support, they may be back at Firestone Stadium quite soon, according to Joey Arrietta. 44:25 - It was announced Thursday afternoon that Frank Robinson passed away at age 83. Not only was he a hall of fame slugger for the Reds and Orioles, but also was the first black manager in baseball, at the helm of the Indians in 1975. Bob DiBiasio from Tribe came on to chat about Frank and the process of having his number retired and a statue in his honor in 2017.
