#347 - Countdown to Countdown

Duke Basketball Report

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 15, 2021 55:49

This episode of the Duke Basketball Report Podcast covers a lot of topics from this week in Duke Basketball. Donald was in Durham earlier this week to meet with the incoming head line monitors, and we are excited for the season to get started with Countdown to Craziness. First up, the unfortunate news that AJ Griffin is out indefinitely with a knee injury of unknown severity. The news gives us unhappy memories of Harry Giles and Kyrie Irving, who also dealt with injuries as freshmen that limited their playing time and therefore their teams' ceilings. We also speculate about who will shoulder the load for Griffin in his absence. Speaking of guys stepping up, the second bit of news that is more optimistic for Duke fans is that Wendell Moore and Joey Baker have officially been made captains for Coach K's final team. On the recruiting front, Jon Scheyer has officially logged his first miss as the Duke head coach, with 2022 guard JJ Starling picking Mike Brey and Notre Dame. We are keeping clear heads about this development, because Coach Scheyer has enjoyed an embarrassment of riches on the trail so far. We wrap with news about Coach K's retirement plan as it relates to Duke and Cameron Indoor Stadium, and (sigh) Kyrie Irving's current take on not getting vaccinated. We try to remain calm. Stay in touch with us at dbrpodcast at gmail.com, and we'll be back after Countdown. Have fun tonight Duke fans! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Naturally, we were able to secure some audio from Coach K's press conference as well as the media availability of the players and coaching staff thanks to the helping hand of Matt Burr, co-host of WXDU Sports, who joins us on the second half of this episode to discuss what he learned from the team. You'll also hear his thoughts on Wendell Moore's progression as a leader and player. He has seemed to embrace the role of veteran leader on the team, and it gives Jason and Donald a lot of excitement. After the break, we welcome Matt Burr to the program to discuss some of the other thoughts he learned from the rest of the team during the media availability. Text LEARNERS to 44222 for more... Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12    https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 Jay Williams is known as one of the greatest college basketball players of all time. At Duke, Jay won the Naismith College Player of the Year award, won the 2001 National Championship, and had his #22 retired. He was the second overall pick by the Chicago Bulls in the 2002 NBA draft. Now Jay works as a basketball analyst for ESPN, hosts a radio show, and is actively involved as an investor in the business world. Notes: Jay starts by describing the terrifying night when he wrecked his motorcycle which led to the end of his playing career… Coach K flew a private plane to be with Jay in the hospital right after his motorcycle accident. He gave him a rosary and said, "you're going to give that back to me when you play again." Jay learned a valuable leadership lesson in that moment. Great leaders create hope. They give people something to strive for. "He gave me a reference point to look forward to." Communication: As a leader, you need to initiate a conversation with each person you're leading. You can't just lead one generic way. You need to get to know each person for who they are. Ask questions about them. Get to know them. Jay's mom said, "Life isn't interpreted by headlines." There is context to things. Jay learned from his mom to have a drive for knowledge and education. Legacy: "Impact is what I want my life to be." Coach K: "I was coached by one of the great minds at coaching life. He's a life leader." "I chose Duke because I wanted to be a king among kings." When Jay got drafted by the Chicago Bulls, he asked to have Michael Jordan's locker. It had not been used by anyone until that moment. "Heavy is the head that wears the crown." Preparation process - It never turns off. Always working on preparing for his work. Jay Bilas called all the prep the parachute. You don't want to need it, but you know it's there in case you get stuck. While at Duke, Jay decorated his body with tattoos, quotations, and symbols that meant far more later on. On his right leg, he inked the Chinese symbol for sacrifice; on his right arm, two hands clasped together, praying, next to the words “To err is human. To forgive is divine.” He also added this, from Gandhi: “Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.” Jay graduated in 3 years: He majored in sociology, graduated early, and turned professional after his junior season. For his final thesis paper, he studied athletes who left college early, their backgrounds, why they failed or succeeded. Kobe - "A relentless pursuit to be the best." "Don't F with me, I'm in killer mode." "He crystalized those fruits that translate to things off the court too." Career advice: Appreciate your position while planning your promotion. Be excellent at your current role while also thinking about what could be next

On this episode of the Duke Basketball Report Podcast, we dive into Jon Scheyer's latest five-star recruit, Dereck Lively II, who committed to Duke on Monday night. What does Lively mean as a player? He is enormous and gifted at both ends of the floor. Jason would like to highlight how long Lively is, in addition to how tall he is. Lively has shown the ability to both score and defend all over the floor. Sam and Donald are excited about his payer comparison to Tyson Chandler. Really, how bad could that be? We agree, though, that Dereck Lively is an enormous addition for the Blue Devils. After the break, we wonder how Jon Scheyer has put together such an impressive class so early in his tenure. Most of Duke's recruits in the 2022 class have already comitted to rising Coach Scheyer, with only a few left on the radar. As I have teed up all week, I am devoting today's Dividend Cafe to the takeaways from this week's SALT Conference here in New York City. The quick qualifier I will offer is that this is not going to be a boring recap of all the speakers, all the events, and all the things that you don't care about. I did not attend the Chainsmokers concert on Tuesday night, and I did not attend the luncheon address from Paris Hilton on Wednesday, either. In the ten years I have attended the event in Las Vegas I don't think I ever got a concert either, despite such names as Lenny Kravitz, Duran Duran, Train, One Republic, and The Killers performing. I did attend past luncheons with Dennis Miller, Magic Johnson, Coach K, and the now late Kobe Bryant. In fact, that lunch event with Kobe Bryant started a domino train that led to me doing a real estate transaction with Kobe – but I will save that story for another day. But as much as they have always done to make this a pretty fun event with a powerful complement of entertainment to the symposium of content, whether in Las Vegas or now this year in New York City, there is nothing that they can do to make me a fun person. I absolutely love the speakers, and for the last two events, I have been honored to be a speaker myself. But whether or not you care about this conference, I believe there are some takeaways from the event this year that are going to make this a meaty and substantive Dividend Cafe. So read on, and I promise I won't let you down. Links mentioned in this episode: DividendCafe.com TheBahnsenGroup.com

With this being the final time fans can watch a Duke team led by Coach K, some interesting parts of the country will have access to quite a few games that they wouldn't normally have. After the break, Caleb Foster is the first Duke commitment from the Class of 2023, and we discuss what type of player we could see on campus in a couple years. The recruiting train is rolling just as strong as ever, and it's exciting to see it all take shape. All of the Catch & Shoot 2.0 crew is enjoying their time off, getting recharged for the upcoming season ...but we still want to make sure you get your Pure Hoops Media fix. So we're sharing some of our favorite shows that you might have missed. Back in June 2nd of this year, news broke that Mike Krzyzewski was to retire from Duke at the end of the 2021-2022 season. On the same day, the Celtics announced Danny Ainge was stepping down as President of Basketball Operations, with head coach Brad Stevens taking the reins. One man in the middle of all this was Stadium Basketball Analyst Jeff Goodman. Jeff broke the news on Coach K while also covering the news of the Celtics moves. Jeff joined our Aaron Berlin and Otto Strong and gave us his thoughts on why Krzyzewski is stepping away and what to expect of the Blue Devils when Jon Scheyer takes over, plus how long he thinks Stevens -- always a coach at heart -- remains in his front office role in Boston. He gives you his conference winners and College Football Playoff picks - plus a surprising national championship prediction! He wraps talking the Pac-12, ACC and Big Ten alliance and a fiasco at Coach K fantasy camp. Here is a full rundown. He starts in the Pac-12 with a conference champion no one has (2:30), before moving to the Big 12 (11:30) where he wonders if Iowa State is *really* good enough to make a playoff run and if Oklahoma is good enough to win it all. College Football preseason picks continued: From there he moves to the ACC (19:00) where he believes we're still a year or two away from one team potentially catching Clemson. He talks about a wide open Big Ten, where Michigan and Penn State are still a ways away from Ohio State - but why the Buckeyes are no lock either (25:00). Finally, he wraps previewing the SEC (31:00) where he believes the best team *isn't* Bama. Finally, he gives his College Football Playoff and national title picks (38:00).Aaron wraps by talking the story about a potential alliance between the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 (40:00) and explains why campers at Coach K fantasy camp got much more than a free t-shirt while they were in Durham (45:00). We have another great guest on Episode 335 of the DBR Podcast. This week, former Duke Basketball and Soccer player and 2001 national champion Andy Borman stops by to chat with Donald and Jason. The meat of the conversation focuses on Kyle Filipowski, a recent Duke commit that Andy Borman coached on the AAU circuit. Andy discusses Filipowski's strengths with Jason and how the recruiting process played out with future coach Jon Scheyer. Andy will have you ready to have this kid on campus! He also discusses how Covid disrupted their AAU season in 2020 and how that affected Filipowski's development. We end with his thoughts on Coach K's retirement (Andy Borman is Coach K's nephew) and how he's enjoyed reliving his time with the 2001 national championship team through Return to Glory, which returns in September. We end with Andy's time on the soccer team under legendary coach John Rennie and some of the old school tactics he would use after a tough loss. After the Andy Borman interview, we quickly react to it and then mention the upcoming official visits of two other Duke recruits, Jaden Schutt and Mark Mitchell. Countdown to Craziness is going to be an especially incredible night this year, and one of those players will be able to take it all in. Learn more about your ad choices.
