:19 - Retief Goosen took home the trophy at the Bridgestone Senior Players championship at Firestone Country Club. Both Ray and Tony checked out the tournament, which, admittedly, didn’t draw the massive crowds the old WGC events did. 4:15 - It’s officially the middle of July, and we’re seeing high 80’s and 90’s at a consistent rate. Dr. Tim Brown from Cleveland Clinic-Akron General stopped by the studio to discuss the facts and fiction about sunscreen. 13:39 - Akron Life Magazine put out their Best of 2019 list, most notably the best pizza and best breweries, two areas Ray and Tony know, respectively. 16:04 - Our veterinarian Dr. Gary Riggs joined the show to answer questions about vitamins for pets and when to switch from puppy/kitten food to adult. Be sure to follow us on our various social media platforms. Facebook: 1590WAKRakron Instagram: @1590WAKR Twitter: @1590WAKR, @Rayinthemorning, @TonyMazur
:19 - Ray started Friday off with some fun TV show facts. Did you know Jon Cryer could have been Chandler on Friends? Lisa Kudrow was almost Roz on Frasier? And Gilligan’s first name is Willy? 9:51 - Former Akron Public Schools superintendent Dr. Sylvester Small returned to the area briefly, as an education building was dedicated in his honor. 16:05 - As the morning show was live, the golfers were teeing off for day two of the Bridgestone Senior Players. Our golf pro Dan Dauk recapped what he saw after the first day of this non-WGC tournament over at Firestone Country Club. 21:05 - Burger King has….tacos? They’re only a dollar, yet some foodies are complaining about them. Maybe because Burger King is not really known for its tacos?
Kyle talks to PGA Tour Pro Jay Haas and current President of the Senior PGA Champions Tour Miller Brady about the Senior Players Championship, taking place at Akron’s Firestone Country Club for the first time ever July 10th through July 14th! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/akswishpod/support
:19 - The late Jim Bouton was a former Yankee pitcher who had fallen on hard times with injuries, so he turned to becoming an author. His 1970 book, Ball Four, caused a stir because he told many tales out of school about his fellow players, and he was essentially blackballed by the league. Ray and Tony talked about the legacy of Ball Four, which related in a lot of ways 35 years later with Jose Canseco’s Juiced. 10:09 - The Bridgestone Senior Players tournament is going on at Firestone Country Club, and many spectators will look at the greens with jealousy, wishing their lawns looked that good. Our master gardener Jeanne Poremski talked about manicuring lawns in this warm summer, and she answered listener questions, as well. 17:27 - What films would be on your Mount Rushmore? A classic film? A gripping drama? A knee-slapping comedy? The panel shared their favorite flicks.
:19 - Though the Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit more than 90 home runs, the Mets’ Pete Alonso prevailed and won the Home Run Derby. While Tony watched and enjoyed it, he’s still on this diatribe about "juiced-up” baseballs hurting the regular season games. 5:34 - All eyes in the sports world these last few days have been on Northeast Ohio, and that continues tonight with the MLB All-Star Game. Bob DiBiasio from the Tribe gave us a preview of how busy he and his compadres at Progressive Field have been. 15:12 - Volunteers have been a huge part of any golf tournament at Firestone Country Club. Barb Dietrich has been a fixture there for sixty years, and she joined Ray to talk about her years at Firestone. 20:00 - We hear about box office blockbusters, but what about the worst box office bombs?
:17 - Former Akron mayor Don Plusquellic called into the show today to make a major announcement. He mentioned several weeks back that he was considering a run for mayor as an independent. His decision is…..not to run. “The Don” mentions his thought process, he stuck up for Mayor Dan Horrigan, and he blasted city council on multiple occasions. 22:22 - Senator Sherrod Brown called into the program. Some of the topics he and Ray touched on were Democrat tax plans in the senate, full legalization of gambling in Ohio, and the controversy over Medicare and rising drug costs. 28:40 - Hello, friends. The Masters is upon us. Some of those golfers will be a part of the Bridgestone Senior Players at Firestone Country Club, which is just three months away. Executive director Don Padgett talked about both the events in Augusta and in Akron. 34:15 - Spring has sprung, and it’s time for the return of our master gardener, Jeanne Poremski. The main topic discussed was the lawsuits and dangers over the Roundup weed killer.
:17 - We began Thursday’s show hot on a gun debate. Basically, the debate boiled down to “why do we need military-style weaponry?” Ray and Jeanne asked that question, while Tony and Steffany took the other side. 20:50 - Speaking of age limits and bans, Cuyahoga Falls could be the next city to raise the age of buying tobacco products to 21. Mayor Don Walters called in to talk about the initiative coming from the Summit County Health Department to raise the ages, not just for cigarettes but for vaping. 25:54 - How much of a problem is vaping with young people? A sizable one, apparently, if high schoolers are partaking in this activity. 33:03 - Executive director of the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship, Don Padgett, came on for his weekly visit with Ray. The tournament will be held July 11-14th at Firestone Country Club.

The panel discussed Trebek’s legacy a bit, as well as some of their favorite breakfast cereals to begin the show. 9:08 - It’s been a week since Ray was out in Goodyear, Arizona, so how about an update on the Tribe in spring training? Broadcaster Jim Rosenhaus joined the program. 19:36 - Malone University is adding cybersecurity as a major at their school. Dr. James Glasgow promoted the new major on the air. 23:15 - High school basketball playoffs keep moving right along. There's a little bit more to it than what's being reported... 32:22 - The weather is warming up in the forecast, which means it’s almost time to hit the links! And speaking of the links, Don Padgett III joined the show to promote the Bridgestone Champions Tour coming to Firestone Country Club on July 8-14.
:17 - Sportswriter and author John Feinstein stopped through town, and he joined the show in studio today. Ray and John talked about the tournament heading to Firestone Country Club that will replace the Bridgestone Invitational, as well as the state of the NBA, the life of Frank Robinson, and Coach K. 8:33 - Mayor Dan Horrigan released his budget for 2019, and he talked about the impact Issue 4 will have on the city. Horrigan also talked to Ray about the cyber attack from weeks back and Russ Neal’s idea for a cloud-based system. 15:59 - It’s 2019, and the perception and stigma of marijuana isn’t what it used to be. In fact, it seems to be more accepted in the culture now. But can it be a gateway drug, or is alcohol still the cause and effect? The panel debates. 33:33 - The All-American Soap Box Derby isn’t just about making a car and rolling down a hill. They’ve been very innovative as far as getting students interested in STEM and other after school programs, which is what Derby president and CEO Mark Gerberich mentioned this morning.

Bob Harig, ESPN.com, calls in from Akron, Ohio the site of this week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Holly and Bob talk about defending champion Tiger Woods. Bob was able to follow Tiger for 8 of 9 practice holes after his interview at the Bridgestone. Bob feels that Tiger is still struggling with driver but pointed out that the driver has not always been his best club that he hit in his bag. It's been about four months since Tiger's surgery so the fact that he is out there competing is huge. In Bob's article he points out the more than 40% of Tiger's wins have been at WGC events, which are "stacked" events with the best players in the world. Tiger has 18 of those wins and no one else has won more than 3 of them. Holly and Bob talk about the buzz going on in the golf world and the buzz around Rory McIlroy and the upcoming Ryder Cup. Rory says that he only wants to focus on the next major championship and not how many he will win. They also discuss Jim Furyk being so close and not being able to close the deal on the final day. Holly recently went through the extensive 2 and 1/2 to 3-hour custom-fitting course for all the clubs in her bag with Travis. After playing most of her life, she was surprised that they fitted her for a 1/2 inch shorter length of shafts which she said has made a world of difference. Custom fitting in the broadest sense is building a club designed to match your individual swing characteristics so that you hit the ball longer and straighter with better control. TaylorMade Performance Labs is able to provide golfers with "Golf's Ultimate Fitting Experience" utilizing the same revolutionary advancements in motion capture technology seen in such films as Lord of the Rings, Polar Express, King Kong, Batman, and The Tiger Woods Video Game. Rich picks Rickie Fowler and Holly takes McDowell to win the WGC-Bridgestone.
