We came to SXSW this year to cover all things beauty, exciting brand partnerships, and of course, film. But this year was extra special because Look Behind the Look had the opportunity to spotlight The Florist, a new film WE are producing and so excited to share about. The Florist written by Jayce Bartok tells the untold true story of Vivien Leigh's later years as she battles Bipolar disorder and builds a very special relationship with a local florist. Starring Carla Gugino as Vivien, the film explores artistry, human connection, and the tension between her brilliance and the turmoil surrounding her struggles. We are gearing up to begin production this spring in Philadelphia. We have an incredible team behind the film and our powerhouse producer Lauren Hale Rieckhoff was invited to speak about The Florist at the Keystone House as part of the Amplify Philly: Behind the Lens – Pennsylvania Filmmakers in Focus panel. Armed with posters, postcards, and a mission, it was an amazing afternoon sharing the film alongside other celebrated indie filmmakers. Gino Pesi hosted the discussion, which covered Pennsylvania's commitment to filmmakers, its production incentives, and why we chose to shoot in Philly. Lauren shared our journey, what's next, and most importantly, how people can get involved to help bring this film to life. A couple of weeks ago—after this episode was recorded, but before it was edited and posted—the famous author Stephen King posted online his top ten novels of all time—and among them was Katherine Anne Porter's Ship of Fools.  This 1962 book was the first novel by Porter, a great American writer who had mostly worked in the short story genre and as a journalist and editor.  The novel tells of a German passenger liner traveling from Mexico to different ports of Europe in the 1930s.  It presents a multinational, highly varied cast of characters.  Ship of Fools received rave reviews at first, before then suffering through the obligatory critical backlash. The film rights sold for what at the time was a kaboodle of money and the movie was nominated for and received a number of Academy Awards. Hosts Kirk Curnutt and Scott Yarbrough wrestle with these questions: is this work a great American novel after all?  Are we all fools bound on an eternal quest for understanding or relevance or fares with inclusive food and drinks?  Why did the author take thirty years (almost) to finish the book? Come steam away with us as we sort it out. Listeners are warned as always: there be spoilers here! The film audio clips are from the trailer to Ship of Fools, directed and produced in 1965 by Stanley Kramer and starring Vivien Leigh and Lee Marvin, among others.  Released by Columbia Pictures.  The show music is by Lobo Loco.  The intro song is “Old Ralley,” and the outro is “Inspector Invisible.”  For more information visit: https://locolobomusic.com/.

There literally was no other year like it. When you look at the list of films that were released in the calendar year of 1939, well, the films most people would consider brilliant classics are in the dozens!  You can spend weeks upon weeks watching movies from just that one year, and you would be completely and thoroughly satisfied.  The Academy, however, can only pick just one Best Picture winner ... and although many people have differing opinions on what was the best film that year and what should have taken home the top prize, no one is going to ever minimalize the enormity of one epic movie, Gone With the Wind. In this episode of our podcast, DLS co-founder Katy Derbyshire brings us the story of  Therese Giehse, a German actor, pacifist and exile known for founding an anti-Nazi cabaret (which, really, we could all get behind these days). Therese had artistic and other adventures with her lover Erika Mann (daughter of Thomas Mann), was photographed by Annemarie Schwarzenbach, and embodied several of Bertolt Brecht's best-known characters on stage. She also acted in movies with Vivien Leigh and previous DLS star Romy Schneider.   Born in Munich in 1898, she went against her liberal Jewish family's expectations to train as an actor, cast as older characters even as a young woman. The Pfeffermühle cabaret started up in 1933, swiftly moving to Zürich to escape the Nazis. With Erika and Klaus Mann, Giehse toured the political show around Europe, never mentioning any names but using parables and storytelling to rip the piss out of Hitler and his henchmen.    Therese returned to Zürich in 1937, where she joined the outstanding cast at the Schauspielhaus theatre, many of them also emigrants like her. During the war, she performed in the premiere staging of Brecht's anti-war play Mother Courage, defining the title role in what some directors have called the greatest play of the 20th century.    She went on working with Brecht and other key playwrights and directors after 1945, in Munich, Zürich and East Berlin. Therese Giehse maintained her pacifist stance throughout her life, criticizing the Vietnam War at public events. She died in 1975 and is buried with her sister in Zürich.   For more on Therese Giehse, please visit our episode notes at  https://deadladiesshow.com/2024/07/19/podcast-73-therese-giehse   Our theme music is “Little Lily Swing” by Tri-Tachyon https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Tri-Tachyon/the-kleptotonic-ep/little-lily-swing   Check out our Patreon here: www.patreon.com/deadladiesshowpodcast   Thanks for listening! Chapter 1What is Gone With The WindIn the sweeping epic Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, the relentless struggle and transformational journey of Scarlett O'Hara are set against the tumultuous backdrop of the American Civil War and Reconstruction era. At its core, the novel explores the theme of survival in a time of immense change. Scarlett, a spirited Southern belle, uses her sharp wits and unabashed ambition to navigate the collapsing world around her. From the destruction of her beloved Tara to the loss of loved ones and the shifting social order, Scarlett's determination to thrive against all odds encapsulates the survivalist spirit of the South. This theme of survival is intertwined with explorations of love, honor, and betrayal, offering readers a poignant look at the personal and societal upheavals of the time. Through her complex characters and rich historical details, Mitchell not only tells a compelling story but also provides a reflection on what it means to endure and adapt in the face of overwhelming adversity.Chapter 2 Meet the Writer of Gone With The WindMargaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind" skillfully blends rich narrative, complex characters, and vivid settings to convey profound emotions and sociopolitical themes. Mitchell employs a descriptive and ornate prose style that captures the nuances of the Southern Gothic tradition, effectively painting the grandeur and decline of the antebellum South. Her writing style is characterized by its detailed depiction of environments and events, which not only provides historical context but also enhances the emotional depth of the story. Through meticulously crafted dialogues, Mitchell gives voice to a wide range of characters, each representing differing perspectives shaped by the turbulence of the Civil War and Reconstruction eras.Mitchell's use of local color, including dialect and cultural references, adds authenticity and aids in the development of character arcs, particularly that of Scarlett O'Hara, whose resilience and complexity are central to the narrative. Through Scarlett's experiences, Mitchell explores themes of love, honor, and survival, making insightful observations about human nature and societal change.Ultimately, through skilled language and storytelling, Margaret Mitchell not only recounts a historical epic but also invites readers to reflect on the enduring human emotions and the complexities of moral choices in times of crisis.Chapter 3 Deeper Understanding of Gone With The Wind"Gone with the Wind," a novel by Margaret Mitchell published in 1936, is a significant work in American literature and culture for several reasons, influencing societal views and inspiring extensive debate and discussion over the years. Its impact can be explored through various aspects such as literature, film, societal views, and cultural discourse. Influence on Literature1. Literary Success: As a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, "Gone with the Wind" achieved massive commercial success and became a cultural phenomenon. It is credited with revitalizing the genre of historical romance, influencing many subsequent works that wanted to replicate its sweeping narrative and complex characterizations.2. Narrative and Structure: The novel's narrative style and structure have been studied in literary circles for their complex interweaving of personal and historical timelines. Mitchell's depiction of the Civil War and Reconstruction eras through the eyes of her protagonist Scarlett O'Hara offers a personalization of historical events, which became a model for other historical novels. We continue to celebrate the female voices that have provided a foundation for cultural advancement and modern discourse by featuring a rare TV talk show appearance by two-time Academy Award winner Vivien Leigh.  The year was 1958. The show was “Small World,” hosted by American broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow. Appearing alongside Ms. Leigh are motion picture executive Samuel Goldwyn and British writer and entertainment critic Kenneth Tynan.  Ms. Leigh, best known for her work as Scarlett O'Hara in “Gone with the Wind” and Blanche DuBois in “A Streetcar Named Desire,” died in 1967 at the age of 53, but her legacy remains profound. Episode 56: GONE WITH THE WIND We've got a big one for you this week. One of the most popular, controversial, and discussed films of all time, Gone With the Wind has without a doubt made an indelible impression on movie history. Coming at the peak of the Hollywood Golden Age, it's a grand and epic saga based on the Margaret Mitchell blockbuster. We did into the movie itself and its complicated legacy in this, one of our longest, episodes. Vivien Leigh stars as Scarlett O'Hara, a strong-willed Southern Belle in the years before, during and after the American Civil War. Clark Gable is the scandalous rouge, Rhett Butler. Also starring are Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Howard, Thomas Mitchell (no relation to Margaret) and Hattie McDaniel, who made history as the first person of color to win a competitive Oscar. This movie won Best Picture for the watershed year of 1939. It ranks #14 on our countdown.* Spoiler Alert: We talk about the movie in its entirety, so if you haven't yet seen it, check it out. Or not. That ball is in your court. Come back next week for our discussion of The Silence of the Lambs. *What is this list? We explain it in more detail in our Trailer and its Description, but as a high-level answer: we aggregated several different lists that rank the ninety-four winners of the Best Picture Academy Award in a rough attempt to get a consensus. It is not intended to be rigorous or definitive. It's just a framework to guide our journey through cinema history.

In this episode, I spoke with author Milan Hain about his latest book "Starmaker: David O. Selznick and the Production of Stars in the Hollywood Studio System". David O. Selznick (1902–1965) was one of the most prominent film producers of the Hollywood studio era, responsible for such artistic and commercial triumphs as King Kong, David Copperfield, Anna Karenina, A Star Is Born, Gone with the Wind, Rebecca, Spellbound, and The Third Man. However, film production was not his only domain. Starting in the late 1930s, he built an impressive stable of stars within his own independent company, including Ingrid Bergman, Vivien Leigh, Joan Fontaine, Jennifer Jones, and Gregory Peck.

These included Noël Coward, Thornton Wilder, Irving Berlin, Margaret Mitchell, Dorothy Parker, Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, Walt Disney and Harpo Marx.Host Sam Gale Rosen toured the island with its current owners and talked about some of its surprisingly star-studded history.

It certainly gives us a lot to talk about in this episode! Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we dive into Victor Fleming's Gone With The Wind. Here's What We Chat AboutWe talk at length about the position of the film in cinematic history and how that contrasts with what it's portraying and how we feel about that, noting that perhaps this film is one that should be considered in the same camp as Song of the South. And we look at what problems we have with the story and why it makes us feel uncomfortable, even if the story itself can be enjoyed when taken out of historical context. Focusing more on the film itself, we look at the actors – Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Howard, Thomas Mitchell, Hattie McDaniel and more – how they got their parts and how well they work for us. We look at lots of bit players and talk about where they've since popped up. We talk about the context of 1939 and how the studio system worked. We talk about the three directors who contributed to this film – George Cukor, Victor Fleming and Sam Wood – as well as the producing kingpin who really is the one responsible for getting this film made the way he wanted: David O. Selznick. We chat about other key crew who helped bring this film to life, including Max Steiner, Yakima Canutt, William Cameron Menzies and Walter Plunkett. And we marvel at how much money this film has taken in over its lifetime and deliberate over whether it should still be able to make money or if it should be locked away now due to its painful portrayal of the period. Actresses and Mental Illness: Histrionic Heroines (Routledge, 2018) investigates the relationship between the work of the actress and her personal experience of mental illness, from the late nineteenth through to the end of twentieth century. Over the past two decades scholars have made great advances in our understanding of the history of the actress, unearthing the material conditions of her working life, the force of her creative agency and the politics of her reception and representation. By focusing specifically on actresses' encounters with mental illness, Fiona Gregory builds on this earlier work and significantly supplements it. Through detailed case studies of both well-known and neglected figures in theatre and film history, including Mrs Patrick Campbell, Vivien Leigh, Frances Farmer and Diana Barrymore, it shows how mental illness – actual or supposed – has impacted on actresses' performances, careers and celebrity. The book covers a range of topics including: representing emotion on stage; the ‘failed' actress; actresses and addiction; and actresses and psychiatric treatment. Actresses and Mental Illness expands the field of actress studies by showing how consideration of the personal experience of the actress influences our understanding of her work and its reception. The book underscores how the actress can be perceived as a representative public woman, acting as a lens through which we can examine broader attitudes to women and mental illness. Fiona Gregory is Lecturer in the Centre for Theatre and Performance at Monash University in Melbourne. Her research on the history of the actress has appeared in leading journals including New Theatre Quarterly, Theatre Survey, and Nineteenth-Century Theatre and Film. Saluton, estas mi, Tyson Saner, and I welcome you heartily to this 351st episode of Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, which just so happens to be the second-to-last episode of Succotash before our 12-year anniverary special, which will then be swiftly followed by a well-deserved hiatus. If you are a 1st time listener, this show typically features clips from other soundcasts from around the world and has for almost 12 years. The entire archive of episodes past can be found over at www.succotash.com for the time being, so if you end up enjoying this program and you'd like to share it with others, send them there or pretty much anywhere else you can listen to soundcasts, which are also called podcasts most everywhere else other than here on Succotash. Last week in Episode #350, show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon brought you a "Chats" episode that featured conversation with, and fascinating stories from Shane Elliot of the sketch comedy group from North Hollywood called Fries On The Side that Mr. Hershon had also been involved with. It's a fascinating and funny chat that you should check out at your earliest convenience. In this, the last episode I'm producing before our aforementioned hiatus, I have brought you some clips to listen to from the soundcasts Holidays After Dark, What Went Wrong, and Bit Weird But Fair Enough (I Guess).  I'll be rounding out the show with 2 clips from the Strange Times Show, the hosts of which just celebrated 10 of their own years in soundcasting. The episode clipped for this purpose is #462, titled "Ten Bloody Years". Many soundcasters sent in their congratulations in audio form, so I've decided to include the one I sent, and the one Marc sent. Those will be played at various points in this program. I'm even throwing in a classic Henderson's Pants ad into this episode just for kicks. It's one of the oldest ones I think…If the numerical system it came with is to be believed.  Well, the show wasn't going to finish writing or producing itself, so I had to get into it. And now it's time for you to do the same… CLIPS Holidays After Dark This is directly from the show description for  Holidays After Dark: "It's a year-round soundcast which explores the strange, unusual, and dark sides of the holidays while also paying tribute to the lighthearted festivities we all know and love!" Featuring host Kristin Seering, our clip is from show from March 28th, 2023 - Easter 2023: Tale of a Homicidal Hare. In this episode, Holidays After Dark explains the history behind how the Easter Bunny came to be and tries to determine if the story of the Bunny Man Killer is real or simply an urban legend. The clip I've selected is from somewhere in the middle. Enjoy.  What Went Wrong From Sad Boom Media, What Went Wrong covers Hollywood's most notoriously disastrous movie productions, digging into the behind-the-scenes insanity of everything from massive flops to record breaking blockbusters. The clip is from their episode of April 3rd, 2023: "Gone With The Wind". Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, and Hattie McDaniel may star in 1939's Gone With the Wind, but this was David O. Selznick's dumpster fire. Join hosts Chris Winterbauer and Lizzie Bassett as they break down a truly disastrous production featuring 15+ writers, 3+ directors, an amphetamine-fueled producer, and racism galore - both onscreen and off. Bit Weird but Fair Enough (I Guess)From Down Under, under The Angry Chimp banner, host Stuart Buckland and guests look at some of the weird stuff going on in this crazy, crazy world. Our clip, from way back on the 1st of February, 2021, is from a show entitled "God or Demon?" And it features not one but two Friends of Succotash. In addition to Mr. Buckland, his guest this episode was British expat in South Korea Samantha Pett, joining Stu to examine weirdness surrounding cats, exams, toast and processed meat. (Sam was formerly a co-host of The Strange Times Show for a not-insubstantial amount of episodes, and a podcaster in her own right with programs such as The Kimchi Chronicles and Anarchy Audi". Keeping with the theme of including Strange Times Show content in this episode, and also wanting to feature Mr. Buckland's relatively recently established soundcast, I was pleased to be able to get both of them in one episode. And there it went…my last solo episode of Succotash before our hiatus. What an amazing ride this has been. It's really hard to wrap my head around the passage of time it seems. I don't mean to say that I don't know what it is, although I don't know what it is more than someone who studies that sort of thing might. Or might claim to…That's what people who study that sort of thing say, right?  "I know what time is..", in casual conversation. Or perhaps sitting by themselves in the middle of a café, working through what they imagine a conversation of that nature would be like, ultimately culminating in an unscheduled "outside voice" moment.  No, I don't mean to say that I don't know what it is…although I don't. It happens, I witness it, it continues to happen, and I attempt to fill it with variety and relative happiness…and music. I can't forget the music. Coming up next, and also LAST for…uh, well…let's just say that I'm not specifically sure how long it will be before we reemerge with something…But my understanding is that that is the plan…there's one of those "that that"'s again. Is that a peculiarity of the English language?  I suppose I could look it up, but I'm not going to do that right now. I'm going to be working on other things in the meantime, and you will be able to find those things over at www.tysonsaner.com as well as an archive full of  stuff I've already done as of this recording. Music, Gaming Videos, A Redbubble store…stuff like that…and who knows what else?  I'm not 100% sure, but if I needed to be, I would never create anything…and there will be plenty of time for inactivity…um…let's just say…later?   Before I go, I need to remember to say "Thank You" to Marc Hershon and Joe Paulino for making me feel like a valuable contributor to something for the last 10 years of my life. It's a very specific thing to say "thank you" for, I know, but It's a very specific sort of gratitude I feel to those who would include me in their creative endeavors. I do not, and hopefully never will, take that sort of thing lightly…. …and now, I have to make the awkward transition into actually saying "Good Bye"…so I will end by saying  "Thank You" to my parents and my wife for being supportive of me in many ways including keeping me alive for the entirety of this experience I call "life" so far. I hope I didn't make it more difficult than it had to be. #Goalz  Thank you for listening, be decent to each other, and when you are out there in the world, should you seek out, or perhaps stumble across our archive during our absence, and you got something out of it that can only be expressed by sharing it with others in some form or another, for example sending them to www.succotashshow.com , then we will experience gratitude for you, for having done so. It's what we dream about happening when we utter the final words of every episode, which are please pass the Succotash… — Tyson Saner
