Immerse yourself in a critical discussion with Attorney Jennifer Becker of the Battered Women's Justice Project as we confront the dire consequences of gun violence within intimate partner relationships. Imagine the threat looming over many; the presence of a gun amplifying the risk of domestic homicide by fivefold. Together, we dissect the United States vs. Rahimi case, examining its potential impact on Second Amendment rights and the protective order process, while considering the broad repercussions for survivor safety and public policy.Amid the complexities of domestic violence legislation, we unravel the true efficacy of protective orders. Jennifer Becker illuminates their pivotal role in providing a lifeline for survivors, from shielding their physical safety to upholding their rights to financial independence and safe visitation. She also pulls back the curtain on the critical yet often unseen work of community collaboration, emphasizing the significance of local law enforcement, policymakers, and advocates working in concert to translate protective laws into protective practices that can save lives. As we wrap up, our focus shifts to the strategies aimed at curtailing gender-based gun violence, underscoring the importance of integrating criminal, civil, federal, and firearm purchase prevention measures. The conversation zeroes in on the meticulous task of maintaining accurate court records, vital for effective federal background checks, and the ongoing efforts to seal the cracks through which domestic abusers might access firearms. By fostering robust partnerships and rigorous policy enforcement, we underscore our collective call to action to enhance community safety and strengthen support for those most vulnerable to domestic abuse.

Discover the unsettling truths that Jennifer Becker from the Battered Women's Justice Project brings to light as we scrutinize the lethal crossroads of intimate partner violence and gun violence. In a poignant and in-depth conversation, we dissect the grim statistics that surround gender-based crimes and the amplified risk of domestic violence homicides when firearms are involved. Jennifer's legal expertise shines a spotlight on the chilling tactics of control and intimidation wielded by abusers, lending a voice to the stark realities faced by countless women.Venture with us as we challenge the myths surrounding domestic violence protection orders, revealing their multifaceted importance in safeguarding survivors. These orders are more than mere paper; they offer a lifeline that spans housing, custody, and financial support. We also examine the potential ramifications of Supreme Court decisions on firearm restrictions for those under restraining orders and stress the critical need for community collaboration in the enforcement of domestic violence policies, as fostered by the BWJP, to protect not just the survivors but also the entire community.Wrapping up this crucial discourse, we turn our focus to the implementation of laws at the local level to combat gender-based gun violence effectively. From the Battered Women's Justice Project's support for community-tailored policies to the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence and Firearms' four-pronged strategy, we unpack the nuance of disarming abusers and the ongoing efforts to bridge gaps for enhanced survivor protection.

It was 1976 when Tina Turner fled for her life, literally, across multiple lanes of highway traffic to a Ramada Inn with $0.36 in her pocket and restarted her life. Despite being one of the most famous performance artists of her time, everyone associated her with Ike Turner, her abusive counterpart and husband. It wasn't until she spoke out publically in a 1981 People Magazine article titled, "Tina Turner: On the Prowl Without Ike" — because of course it was — that her fans would hear the truth. She wasn't half of an idyllic Hollywood couple. She was a survivor who'd had enough.  If you're a survivor of domestic violence, it's never your fault. On January 24, 2000, sheriff's deputies in Mentone, Alabama stopped an older model Lincoln with Ohio plates that they suspected was involved in a hit-and-run accident earlier that day. The driver was thirty-seven-year-old Hayward Bissell of Norwalk, Ohio and strapped into the seat beside him was the remains of his twenty-four-year-old girlfriend, Patricia Booher. To the deputies' horror, Booher's hand and leg had been severed from her body, her eyes had been gouged out, and her heart and liver had been torn out, but were still in the car. Further investigation revealed that, in addition to Booher's murder, Bissell had also attempted to kill two other couples on what appeared to be a rampage across two states.Thank you to the ever so talented David White for research assistance :)-Schizophrenia & Psychosis Action Alliance - Website:sczaction.orgServices: Education and support groups National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)Website:nami.org Services: General resources for mental health Domestic Violence: -US Hotline Number: 1(800)-799-7233-The Battered Women's Justice Project: **We donated to them, I met with them and they are amazing**Website: BWJP.org Services: Free legal help -Center For Domestic Peace Website: Centerfordomesticpeace.org Services: Support groupsReferencesActon, Andy. 2000. In today's episode, Dr. Lisle and Dr. Howk discuss the following listener questions: How do you square the notion that there is "no 1 mate" (or job, friend etc) with the jealousy/abuse/ stalking (and worse) that happens in relationships. What type of general education on this concept could be offered to attempt to mitigate such costly stone age behavior.  Related, can u talk about the treatment of battered women in your practice, how they do or don't escape?  Buss claims one contributing cause of such behavior is patriarchal culture and institutionalized male dominance.  Any truth to that or is this just genetic like everything else? I have a frenemy (that is, a friend who was really an enemy) who I've long lost touch with, but whom I still irresistibly stalk on social media. She was very competitive with me in college, although I drastically outperformed her at the time (I was the dux and she was upper-middling). Nevertheless, she went on to similar feats as me, getting her PhD from Yale (again, the same as me). I see her subtweeting things about me occasionally and I wonder why, after not being friends for so long, we both harbour a malevolent obsession about each other? What is the evolutionary good of this? Neither of us stands to gain anything from this and we've both achieved what we wanted, showing that it wasn't the zero-sum game we might've thought during our early college years. She has become a tenure-track professor while I started a very successful company and am now a millionaire. Why do we ruminate so much about enemies/frenemies, and how can be finally move on from them? I was wondering what over population does to a society. I understand nothing is changing genetically but was curious how lived experiences differ between populated densely packed cities and villages/ towns. Is one better than the other for mental health?

The impact of gun violence in America is well-documented as 23,000 people in the U.S. were killed by a firearm in 2021, and firearms are now considered the leading cause of death for our nation's youth. For women, the statistics are even more dire, as the presence of a gun in her home makes her 3-times more likely to be murdered. And if her abusive partner has a firearm, femicide risk increases 1,000%. More than just statistics, the lives and futures of women are increasingly at risk from the American obsession with guns coupled with its pervasive misogynistic culture.Alicia Nichols, Deputy Director of the National Domestic Violence and Firearms Resource Center of the Battered Women's Justice Project, joins the conversation to explore the link between firearms and lethality risk in intimate partner violence relationships, as well as the myriad responses to gun violence that will improve safety for women and keep guns out of the hands of violent offenders.

This week's episode we talk through the second part of the defense's case in April Wilkens' murder trial.  We look at what the prosecution had to prove to overcome April's claim of self defense, and the difference between traditional self defense and the defense of Battered Womens' Syndrome.  April's attorney called an expert witness to explain to the jury what Battered Women's Syndrome was, and how it could explain April's behavior leading up to Terry's death. Unfortunately, instead of explaining anything he calls April's behavior "stupid" and "unreasonable" from the stand. _________________________ See the Battered Women's Syndrome instruction send back with the jury in April's murder case: okappleseed.org/episode-10-show-notes Detailed Timeline of Events in April's Case compiled by April herself with help from her niece, Amanda: https://aprilwilkensblog.wordpress.com/2022/02/12/timeline-of-events/ Sign the Change.org petition to support April's release: https://www.change.org/p/oklahoma-pardon-parole-board-commute-the-life-sentence-of-abuse-survivor-april-wilkens?signed=true Donate to keep our work going!: neappleseed.org/okappleseed Learn more about Oklahoma Appleseed: okappleseed.org If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, use a safe computer and contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at www.thehotline.org or call 1-800-799-7233. Tragically, police discovered the bodies of Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman on June 12th, 1994. In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn Roe v Wade, imperiling all women's freedoms, and creating a new pipeline to prison for the vulnerable just as the world is learning how counterproductive most incarceration - solutions are. Today's guests argue that things could have been very different. If the white dominated “choice” movement had paid closer attention to all women's choices, or lack thereof; If anti-violence advocates had rejected criminalization and incarceration as a solution to the violence in women's lives. Things could have been different, our guests argue, if a different part of the US women's movement had gained more attention - attention it is beginning to get now. There has always been such a movement, they know, because they were there. Today we talk to Black abolitionist feminist Beth Richie and Queer southern feminist Suzanne Pharr have worked together, for abolition, feminism, and a systemicly different world for forty years.  What have they learned? And what is their message for us now, when so much hangs in the balance?Guests:Suzanne Pharr, Co-founder, Southerners on New Ground.
