In the latest episode of the Simply Fit Podcast, I have the pleasure of speaking with Michelle Madrid Michelle is a writer and coach who focuses on helping adoptees and women elevate their life, their mind, body and spirit. Outside of the adoptee community, adoption and those who go through the foster care system really is a subject that isn't spoken about enough. I reached out to Michelle after realising that I personally don't know enough and want to understand more and shine a light on an important conversation that we should be having more. This conversation was full of insights and Michelle's wisdom goes beyond her knowledge surrounding adoption and you are going to take so much away from this episode. In this episode you can expect to learn: Why the narrative we're told about adoption isn't really accurate. What the impact is on those who grow out of the foster care system.. Along with how each and everyone of us can make an impact even if we aren't in a position to foster. So without further ado, Michelle Madrid. Adoption is complicated, and the life of the adoptee can be one faced with many obstacles. This is why it is necessary to find peace with your story and your identity, so that the difficulties you face do not define your journey. In this episode, Michelle touches on topics such as the importance of claiming your identity and your truth as an adoptee, the relationships between adopted families, and understanding the language of adoption. With all of these factors in mind, you can be able to open yourself up to your experiences and your identity, and how you want to view each of them. *** If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving us a short review? Her mission is to ensure that the adoption community is heard, seen, valued, respected, and understood. She is also the Host of The Greater Than Podcast. Her international upbringing allows her to feel at home anywhere in the world. With a shared passion for adventure and service, Michelle and her family live and travel worldwide. According to her, adoption has touched every part of her life. She relays,”As an adoptee, I think it's important to understand that adoption is a life-long journey. Adoptive parents really need to understand this. There will be many twists and turns along the journey, for their child, many entries and exits and it's vital that children of adoption feel supported and safe to share their feelings and ask their questions”. It was devastating. She said, “I thought if other people heard it or if they knew about my early story, then they would see me as less able to do the job that I was doing. Somehow scared, less desirable to hire.” A set of feelings that were difficult to escape. So, she hid it for as long as possible. Until one day a breaking news story developed. She said, “I was on the news desk, reading this story coming down on the prompter about a homicide that had happened… The suspect was the adopted son of this couple… It said ‘the adopted son' over and over again.” A story that made Michelle realize that we cannot run from the truth of who we are. A story that helped her embrace her adoption as a strength, not a weakness. A story that helped Michelle define her purpose in life, to ensure that the adoption community is heard, seen, valued, respected, and understood. “I want to help people rise… I want to help them overcome.” EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: On Becoming Resilient: Make the decision to move forward On Life: Your decisions control your life, not the events that happen in it On Identity: Don't hide from your story On Advocacy: Rise up every morning and be passionate about your work *** If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving us a short review? Michelle Madrid Branch understands adoption in ways that most others do not. She is both an adoptee and an adoptive parent. She was adopted in the U.K. as a toddler, found her biological family as a teenager, and after she got married and had one biological son, she and her husband adopted two children internationally. They brought home a son from Russia and a daughter from Ethiopia. Michelle has great insight into the struggles and triumphs that adoption can bring to all those involved. She is truthful about her journey and so inspiring!! She is an author, speaker, and global advocate for women and children. Her books include “Mascara Moments,” “Adoption Means Love,” and “The Tummy Mummy,” which was voted one of the top 25 adoption books for children. She is also the Executive Producer and Host of “The Greater Than Project," which is a documentary web series exploring the intrinsic greatness within women.
Hello and welcome to episode 61 of The Couragemakers Podcast! This week I'm chatting to Michelle Madrid-Branch and we're really diving into claiming our own identities and owning our stories. Michelle is an author, speaker, life wellness coach, and global advocate for women and children, living in Santa Barbara, CA, with her husband, children , three dogs and a bunny. Michelle advocates on behalf of women and children who are marginalized and left feeling isolated in our society. Michelle is happiest when using her life journey in an effort to serve others and help others rise up from their pain. She is currently in the process of writing her fourth book. In this episode, Michelle shares her journey, from being born in the UK and placed in the foster care system to being adopted by an American family and learning to untangle labels she had been given and finding her own identity. We really explore the power of owning your story, moving beyond past stories that keep us stuck and changing our lens so we can start to reclaim our lives. Michelle shares what inspires her to work with and advocate on behalf of children without families and the lessons she has learned along the way. She also shares how she has found that every one of us is uniquely qualified to bring something positive into the world, and invites listeners to explore their own unique strengths and gifts. We also have a great conversation about how forgiveness can free us and take us out of our own prisons and how sustainability is key when it comes to building a life you love. This episode is a great reminder that you do have the courage to find your own identity, and to own that identity because no one can give it to you. I loved hearing Michelle's story and how openly she shares about how she found the courage to find the magic in the mess and be who she is. I know you're going to love this episode. Enjoy the show! Among many things, Michelle is an international adoptee from the UK adopted in the United States. As a little girl struggling through the foster care system, young Michelle learned early that only perfection equated safety. Thus, the perfect grades, the best job, the nicest car... all of these things began to mean survival. She rose to the top, becoming a successful broadcast news journalist and balancing a series of impressive roles. So, why did she walk away from the financial and emotional security she worked so hard to achieve? What changed, and is she happy with this decision? Hear Michelle discover that what she was looking for had been there all along. ------------------ Like the show? Please review on iTunes! http://itunes.careerdayshow.com.
