This super-sized episode has the guys interviewing several people from a recent Expert Working Group on Human Factors in the discipline of DNA. Glenn starts by giving Eric his “Where in the Whorld” question and they catch up on some recent travels. Glenn also explains why this episode does NOT feature a continuation of the previous episode on the Peacemaker case, but instead pivots to a different DNA topic. In May 2024, NIJ/NIST released a Human Factors and Forensic DNA Interpretation report. (The) Niki Osborne, Ph.D., the project lead and contractor for NIST (Natl Institute of Standards and Technology) describes how the project came to be and how NIST selected the Expert Working Group (EWG). Then, two members of the EWG, Jarrah Kennedy, Assistant DNA Supervisor, Kansas City Police Crime Laboratory, and Michelle Madrid, DNA Technical Leader, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, discuss the various recommendations in the report. The group covers all sorts of fun topics within DNA discipline such bias, new software and computational approaches, activity level, implementation, enforcement, and so forth. The episode ends with Niki and Glenn discussing other disciplines and future reports. Links to the free report: Expert Working Group on Human Factors in Forensic DNA Interpretation (May 2024). EP #260 - The Healing Path for Adoptees, An Interview with Author and Podcast Host, Michelle Madrid. Welcome to this episode of Empowering Chats with Susan Burrell. I have a very special guest today. Her name is Michelle Madrid and she has recently penned a book called, Let Us Be Greater: A Gentle Guided Path to Healing for Adoptees. In her book, Michelle documents her own story of being an International Adoptee who was born in the UK to an English Mom and a Spanish Father. Her biological mom was married with 3 kids. Michelle was the product of her mother's affair with a Spanish man, her biological father. Ultimately Michelle was placed in foster care in the UK when she was about 8 weeks old. She was eventually adopted by an American Family when she reached her young toddler years. Michelle's journey to learn how to deal with being an adoptee began when she was in college. She explored her relationship with her biological mom who would often dispense advice like, “C'mon time for you to get a stiff upper lip and move on.” OR advice from her adopted mother sounded something like this, “Just be grateful I saved you from a very hard space it's time for you to just move forward.” Her life path guided her to seek answers and ways to help others who may have had similar experiences as an adopted child. Michelle has learned that the complex emotions and psychological turmoil of adoption — including feelings of anger, distrust, confusion, and unworthiness — are best healed through identification, exploration and understanding. Written with compassion and authenticity, her book Let Us Be Greater helps adoptees and their families feel heard, seen, and understood as they work to build open, fulfilling and healthy relationships. Michelle offers many healing practices for adoptees throughout the book. It is filled with exercises to help adoptees work through their challenges in order to tap into their authentic self. It is also a great resource for families that are considering adoption. In the latest episode of the Simply Fit Podcast, I have the pleasure of speaking with Michelle Madrid Michelle is a writer and coach who focuses on helping adoptees and women elevate their life, their mind, body and spirit. Outside of the adoptee community, adoption and those who go through the foster care system really is a subject that isn't spoken about enough. As an adoptee and mother of adopted children, Michelle Madrid-Branch takes this episode to discuss her experience as a mother and what it has taught her. With deep conversations about creating space to communicate with your children, allowing adoptees to be heard, and giving freedom to and embracing your children, Madrid-Branch provides advice for parents of adopted children as well as any parents needing insights on their individual journeys of raising and loving a child. *** If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving us a short review? Adoption is complicated, and the life of the adoptee can be one faced with many obstacles. This is why it is necessary to find peace with your story and your identity, so that the difficulties you face do not define your journey. In this episode, Michelle touches on topics such as the importance of claiming your identity and your truth as an adoptee, the relationships between adopted families, and understanding the language of adoption. With all of these factors in mind, you can be able to open yourself up to your experiences and your identity, and how you want to view each of them. *** If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving us a short review? It was devastating. She said, “I thought if other people heard it or if they knew about my early story, then they would see me as less able to do the job that I was doing. Somehow scared, less desirable to hire.” A set of feelings that were difficult to escape. So, she hid it for as long as possible. Until one day a breaking news story developed. She said, “I was on the news desk, reading this story coming down on the prompter about a homicide that had happened… The suspect was the adopted son of this couple… It said ‘the adopted son' over and over again.” A story that made Michelle realize that we cannot run from the truth of who we are. A story that helped her embrace her adoption as a strength, not a weakness. A story that helped Michelle define her purpose in life, to ensure that the adoption community is heard, seen, valued, respected, and understood. “I want to help people rise… I want to help them overcome.” EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: On Becoming Resilient: Make the decision to move forward On Life: Your decisions control your life, not the events that happen in it On Identity: Don't hide from your story On Advocacy: Rise up every morning and be passionate about your work *** If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving us a short review? Hello and welcome to episode 61 of The Couragemakers Podcast! This week I'm chatting to Michelle Madrid-Branch and we're really diving into claiming our own identities and owning our stories. Michelle is an author, speaker, life wellness coach, and global advocate for women and children, living in Santa Barbara, CA, with her husband, children , three dogs and a bunny. Michelle advocates on behalf of women and children who are marginalized and left feeling isolated in our society. Michelle is happiest when using her life journey in an effort to serve others and help others rise up from their pain. She is currently in the process of writing her fourth book. In this episode, Michelle shares her journey, from being born in the UK and placed in the foster care system to being adopted by an American family and learning to untangle labels she had been given and finding her own identity. We really explore the power of owning your story, moving beyond past stories that keep us stuck and changing our lens so we can start to reclaim our lives. Michelle shares what inspires her to work with and advocate on behalf of children without families and the lessons she has learned along the way. She also shares how she has found that every one of us is uniquely qualified to bring something positive into the world, and invites listeners to explore their own unique strengths and gifts. We also have a great conversation about how forgiveness can free us and take us out of our own prisons and how sustainability is key when it comes to building a life you love. This episode is a great reminder that you do have the courage to find your own identity, and to own that identity because no one can give it to you. I loved hearing Michelle's story and how openly she shares about how she found the courage to find the magic in the mess and be who she is. I know you're going to love this episode. Enjoy the show! I'm an INFJ creative and multipassionate who has a bit of a notebook and post-it note obsession, loves foot-stomping country music and likes her hot chocolate with way too much chocolate. I started Couragemakers because I wanted to create a platform for passionate and unconventional women to have honest conversations and to share their stories, struggles and dreams. The intention behind this podcast is to inspire and encourage creative and mission-driven women to live a wholehearted life and follow the beat of their drum. When I'm not recording episodes, writing bullshit-free, very vulnerable and encouraging Sunday emails to fellow couragemakers or making new friends with the wonderful guests, you can find me working on all manners of magic over at That Hummingbird Life. THL is the online home for unconventional creatives and multipassionates who want to show up unapologetically and intentionally as who they are, and really own, live and share their many stories. It's made for couragemakers who have so much great shit to give the world and want to leave their mark but have too much self doubt standing in the way!
Today we have a global advocate for adoption with us. Michelle Madrid-Branch is the author of several books including Adoption Means Love: Triumph of the Heart, Mascara Moments: Embracing the Woman in the Mirror, and the children's book, The Tummy Mummy. Links to those are available in the show notes for today's episode. Beyond that, if you've ever felt somehow that you don't quite belong or don't quite have a voice in a situation, then this is the episode for you. As an international adoptee herself, Michelle's story of adopting 2 of her 3 kiddos is soft and powerful all at the same time. She has been inducted into the New Mexico Women's Hall of Fame in 2006 and was honored with the Governor's Award for Outstanding New Mexico Women by Governor Bill Richardson AND she is the recipient of the 2004 Congressional Angels in Adoption Award. I didn't know this going into it, but even though Michelle is mostly doing author, and adoption related work these days, she has a background in TV & New broadcasting. This means I took the opportunity to ask her a few questions about our political environment today regarding borders and the media. Overall Michelle has a super insightful perspective which I know you will enjoy immensely. Let's get into it. Brave Take-Aways Okay, so beyond the Bare Naked Bravery Adult Coloring Book, your Brave Take-Away from today's show is to take a separate bit of time this week to check in with your internal bravery barometer.
