At first glance, Emily's business may seem like a niche of a niche. Given the stressors and unique mental health challenges facing entrepreneurs, I'm here for it. Through our conversation I learned so much that will not only help me show up more powerfully in my own business but also for my coaching students. If you've been coming up against the same blocks time and time again in your business, this episode could be what helps you get moving forward. Can't-Miss Moments From This Episode:Meryl Streep in “Devil Wears Prada” is iconic — but she's also a pretty big jerk to her staff. Emily Ann breaks down how it's a great example of not recognizing trauma while we're in it (or the long-term impacts on us).  To check your email, or not to check your email? Why does it feel like a life and death decision sometimes? Emily explains the sneaky ways trauma shows up and overwhelms you in the day-to-day of your business. How to figure out your pause signal: for me it's a twinge in my shoulder. For Emily it's a tightness in her chest. Are you ignoring or rationalizing away all the times your body is screaming at you to slow down? Emily breaks down my experience with a bad hire to show why, despite him interviewing incredibly well, it all went sideways after he started working for me (this goes way deeper than checklists and documentation). Are you brave? Answer: yes. Check out Emily's version of bravery: it's not only more attainable than what society might lead you to believe… it's also more impactful when it comes to long-term positive benefits.  This one is jam-packed full of advice. Don't miss out - listen now!Emily's Bio:Emily Ann Peterson is a business coach, Certified Trauma Support Specialist (CTSS), and director of The School of Bravery. She specializes in teaching empirically-proven, value-based business tools and strategies to brave survivors of religious trauma, high-control organizations, or other kinds of abusive experiences and relational structures. Her mission is to dismantle undue influence and coercive control through the power of ethical commerce. She believes entrepreneurs are granted a unique opportunity that many survivors never receive; the practice of resolving trauma through the day-to-day demands of business! Peterson is also a #1 Amazon best-selling author, singer-songwriter, keynote artist, and podcast host. She builds bravery amongst her fans, students, and audiences around the world by teaching the concepts outlined in her book Bare Naked Bravery: How to Be Creatively Courageous. She is a TEDx speaker and has been featured on BestSelf Magazine, Thrive Global and Seattle KING-5's New Day Northwest.Resources and links mentioned:Emily's siteEmily's blogEmily's memoirCome kick ass with me:Permission to Kick Ass websiteAngie's Facebook PageAngie on InstaAngie on YouTubeDownload this episode

How to Be a Better Ally for Social Justice featuring Dr. Joy Cox

I have been looking forward to speaking with Dr. Joy Arlene Renee Cox for months now. She is such a beautiful soul and I'm so grateful to her for all the work she's doing in the world. In today's conversation we talk about trusting our intuition, the lived experience of individuals with larger bodies, being brave in the healthcare industry, cultural biases, and discrimination against people with different bodies. In light of the current season of anti-racism, she also answers the question of "How can we use our intuition to be better allies and advocates?" Political action as a tool for liberation, especially for people with multiple identities is having an exciting moment in our history. Dr. Joy Cox sees a lot of that happening in the communities. She said in this episode "Liberation is built on the structure of bravery. If we look back generations, we'll see that our parents and our parents' parents' parents' had something to fight for... When you look at activists now, the shoulders they stand on belong to people who were conditioned in bravery, so to speak, they were able to stand up to the things that were impeding against them and say 'we're gonna do this.'" This conversation with Dr. Joy Cox challenged me and inspired me in such good ways and I hope it will do the same for you too! Especially as we dive into a new season of personal and societal bravery for the rest of this year, we need as much of this kind of bravery as we can get! More About Dr. Joy Cox Joy Arlene Renee Cox is an ordinary person who has been given an ordinary opportunity to share stories about people much more fabulous than herself. She is a Philadelphia native, born on the blessed thirty-first day of December. She is also a doctor, receiving her PhD from Rutgers University–New Brunswick in 2018. Her field of work is centered on fatness, identity, and social change. Reflective of the name she bears, Joy has the cheeks to out smile her detractors. Reflective of her work in print, she has the research to back up her claims. Sara Avant Stover is with us today! This month in the School of Bravery and on the podcast we're focusing on the bravery ingredient of Context, specifically as it pertains to being vulnerable. When I gave Sara a couple topics to choose from, she actually picked this topic, so get ready for some powerful and introspective looks at how context plays a role in our bravery and ability to be honest and vulnerable with others and within ourselves. Sara Avant Stover is a teacher of feminine spirituality and empowerment, bestselling author, and founder of The Way of the Happy Woman. She mentions this a briefly in our conversation today, but after a cancer scare in her early twenties, Sara moved to Thailand, embarked on a decade-long healing and spiritual odyssey throughout Asia. She has gone on to uplift tens of thousands of women worldwide. Sara has also been featured in Yoga Journal, the Huffington Post, Newsweek, Natural Health, and on ABC, NBC, and CBS. I'm really excited to have her here with us today. I know you'll appreciate her calm and grounded presence throughout the whole conversation, which is completely appropriate (context, yes?) because what we later land on is the importance of silence and listening in the midst of Seasons of Bravery. I'm so honored to introduce you today's guest! Jonathan DeWaal is with us today to discuss the timing of improvisation, especially as it pertains to seasons of bravery and transition! Jon is the executive director of Liminal Space, a nonprofit organization based out of Seattle, WA which is dedicated to helping others find the courage and means to navigate major life transition. One nugget of a quote he laid down in today's conversation is this: "The gold we're often looking for is found in the place where you find the most discomfort." So true. We're not just talking about the discomfort of transition, but also two really powerful questions to ask when we find ourselves smack in the center of a liminal space or transition: - How did I get here? - Who do I want to become now? He also gave us a wealth of resources towards the end of our conversation, which I'll be sure to pop the links to all of it in the show notes for this episode. Thank you so much Jon for stepping into today's conversation with your whole presence. All of us going through transitions thank you immensely. Before we pop into the conversation, let me just say this. You probably know of someone going through a season of bravery and transition. If you do, share this episode with them. Another resource I'll just put out here because it's thematically resonant: The Seasons of Bravery Ritual Workshop is waiting for you on emilyannpeterson.com/workshops - it's a series of videos, guidebook, and 6 steps to help you make some plans and attain some goals. So if you find yourself in a season where you might need to take a step back and acknowledge the sacredness of discomfort and growth, go for it! Additional options for taking next steps are to go listen to Jon's new podcast called, "Life Through Transitions." (https://inaliminalspace.org) He and I took a deeper dive into my own stories of transition to unpack that liminal space for his audience. We got to talk about elements of my story that I don't often discuss, so if you're curious, that link is also in the show notes. With allll that, I am delighted to introduce Jon DeWaal... Brave Takeaway Beyond your free Bravery Bundle (which is always available at barenakedbravery.com) your Brave Take-Away from today's show is to ask those two questions to a friend going through transition. Bonus points go to those who actually sit down and listen to your friends answers. Go ahead and tag us so we can cheer you on and see what you're up to. More Resources Book: "Transitions" by William Bridges Book: "Crossing the Unknown Sea" by David Whyte Book: "To Be Told" by Dan Allender More About Jon DeWaal Jon came to Seattle in 2003 from Grand Rapids, MI, to attend The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology receiving his Masters of Divinity in 2007.  Since then, he taught at The Seattle School as an adjunct professor on calling and career. Jon served for two years as a fellow and teacher at The Allender Center for Trauma & Abuse.  Through his education, mentoring and the struggles and discoveries of his transitions, Jon found a more natural fit for his career – creating Liminal Space, an organization that combines the often segregated disciplines of counseling, life coaching, career counseling and spiritual direction.  Over the last 10 years his work and research has shown that major transitions are places where people can find their desired path and become stronger, or where they can get stuck – sometimes for years. Having a plan, helpful guidance, and a clear focus can make all the difference in the world. Anybody who has ever done something new for the first time will tell you it's a bit stressful. Ask any entrepreneur how their stress-life is and they'll most likely tell you they're hanging by a thread or really overwhelmed orin some cases they'll look like the stress gives them a high that only illegal substances could explain. ha! I say that from experience, because I've been all versions of stress management as an entrepreneur. I've poorly handled my stress and especially after the diagnosis of my hand tremor, I've learned how crucial it is to manage this stress wisely. But where does this stress come from? Well, Benjamin Dell, founder and CEO at Missinglettr.com (a social marketing automation company that automatically creates 12 months worth of social content for each blog post you publish) is here with us today to chat briefly about just that. Part of that stress comes from sustaining high levels of defiant expectation for seemingly impossible things. Since this month's theme in The School of Bravery and on our podcast Defiant Expectation, I'm so pumped to discuss this subject with someone who so blatantly possesses it. Ben previously owned a web agency in the UK for over 10 years. During this time he also launched a number of SaaS tech startups (two of which were acquired). It's clear to me, especially from our conversation with him today, that Benjamin is passionate about empowering businesses and brands with tools that help them succeed. Defiant expectation is one of those tools, so without further ado, I give you Benjamin Dell! Brave Takeaway Beyond your free Bravery Bundle (which is always available at barenakedbravery.com) your Brave Take-Away from today's show is to pop into the Bare Naked Bravery facebook community to share the latest time you executed your defiant expectation skills. The timing of how this episode lined up to get published is perfect! Today we have Jessica Flint with us! Jessica and I recorded this conversation several weeks ago after she interviewed me for her community Recovery Warriors. We had such a great time together that I knew y'all would enjoy meeting her too. but THEN when Jessica found out I was coming through Austin on my book concert tour, without any hesitation she opened her home to my dog and I! So last week, our internet friendship become real. I cease to be amazed by how welcoming and warm practical strangers are, especially while I'm on tour. So if you're thinking about doing some brave travel, I highly recommend leaning into the embrace of strangers. It's an excellent exercise in trust and how to find home in yourself and amongst strangers. Before we get on to today's interview, I just want to update you... The 200 free website audits I'm giving away this summer are going FAST, so if you or someone you know is interested in getting some professional, outside eyes on your bit of internet bravery, then head on over to emilyannpeterson.com and scroll down the homepage to learn more and sign up for your spot in the calendar. (http://emilyannpeterson.com/free-website-audits) I've been absolutely LOVING getting to know everyone, but this won't be a forever offer, so I want to make sure you act on it now before the summer is up or before the spots run out! But free website audits and staying with hospitable internet friends is not what we're talking about today with Jessica, although I guess it does relate somewhat. Because this month's theme in The School of Bravery and here on the podcast is "Defiant Expectation!" It takes a certain defiant expectation to drive around the country and stay in the homes of internet friends, yes. But it also takes an extreme amount of defiant expectation to go through recovery, of any kind, but today we're talking specifically about recovery from an eating disorder. Now 2 weeks ago, I was able to lead a couple workshops for an eating disorder treatment facility, which was simply magical for me. As someone who survived an eating disorder myself, I have an intimate knowledge of the bravery required to set foot in a therapeutic environment to make those baby steps towards a different kind of life. Jessica Flint is with me on this. She's the founder of the Recovery Warriors community which dedicated to educating, inspiring, and empowering people to make big changes in their life. Forbes recognized her work as a technology innovating mental health that has served millions worldwide. If you're on my email list, you'll already know this, but Jessica invited me onto her Recover Strong interview series, which starts tomorrow on June 20th, if you're listening to this episode when it goes live. If you resonate with both of our stories of recovery, then you'll want to get hooked up with that interview because she and I discuss some of the darkest days I experienced during my own recovery story. A link to that is in the show notes for this episode. (https://events.truewarrior.fm/recoverstrong/) Brave Takeaway Beyond your free Bravery Bundle (which is always available at barenakedbravery.com) your Brave Take-Away from today's show is to hop into the Bare Naked Bravery Facebook Group and tell us something that inspires a defiant expectation in your life. Maybe it's hearing other people's stories? Maybe it's seeing injustice happen? Maybe it's something else... Regardless, we'd love to hear all about it and your favorite parts of today's Bare Naked Bravery. You can find Jessica Flint and myself on facebook, twitter, instagram, and more. Today we have an awesome nomination as our guest! I always love it when things like this work out, and I just have to thank Jessica Ribera for being so willing and open to jump into our conversation so blindly. Jonny, a former bandmate of mine, nominated Jessica Ribera for today's episode. She and I talk about the moments we share while dealing with our respective pains and losses. Jessica lost her ballet career. I lost my career as a cellist. Today we both find ourselves using the word writer as a self-descriptor. Before you go and think this is gonna be a sob fest of an episode, it's not. Jessica and I both retain our emotional sobriety today, however we do talk about the moments we denied our lack of emotional sobriety and instead tried to numb or deny the pain we were so vividly fighting to feel. We talk about writing. We talk about being honest. We talk about career-ending injuries. We talk about gaining, losing, and regaining our vision for the possibility. Y'all. This is such a good, honest, discussion. Thank you Jonny for nominating Jessica Ribera to join the Bare Naked Bravery community. On that note, if you have someone you'd like to nominate for the show - go for it! You can visit barenakedbravery.com/be-our-guest and submit your person right now. We ONLY feature guests who've been nominated on the show. We do this because it keeps things real and it keeps us talking about the resonant bravery we see all around us. If you're curious about what resonant bravery is, go read my book (available on Amazon right now in all formats!) I talk alllll about resonant bravery in the first third of the book. If you're listening to this episode now and haven't read the book yet, there's a good chance that you should go get yourself a copy. Okay, back to Jessica Ribera. You're gonna love her. Her writing has been featured on Scary Mommy, The Mighty, and Feminine Collective. She's a business school grad, doula, mom, and soooo much more. Most of all she's real. and like we say later in the conversation, even though her pain is uniquely hers, pain is pain and we've all experienced the dull ache of some version of it. Sharing it together can make it more manageable. Please enjoy my brand new friend Jessica Ribera!   Brave Takeaway Beyond your free Bravery Bundle (which is always available at barenakedbravery.com) your Brave Take-Away from today's show is to pop into the Bare Naked Bravery Community facebook group and share your "hiding under the desk" moment. You can find Jessica Ribera and myself on facebook, twitter, instagram, and more. Go ahead and tag us so we can cheer you on and see what you're up to. More About Jessica Ribera At 17, Jessica moved from Texas to Seattle all by my big self to dance at the Pacific Northwest Ballet. 3 years later a stage accident changed her plans. Fighting her way back to the belief that her creative efforts matter and that she STILL is a dancer and creator in spite of a career-ending injury has been the central lens for her learning, personal development, and (most crucially!) desire to love and empower others for the past 13 years. She's been a dancer, business school graduate, art advocate and curator, board member, mother, doula, chronically ill person, and whatever else, but she's really only ever trying to find new ways to be truthful, useful, and kind. Writing, once only a coping mechanism, finally asserted itself as new passion and goal, though learning to call herself "writer" has required her to face her fear of giving herself to an art form again. The loss of ballet was terrible, but in her writing she sees that the gains might, MIGHT, just have been worth it. She's currently shaping a memoir of her time as a dancer, the loss, and the ongoing recovery. Her writing has appeared on Scary Mommy, The Mighty, and Feminine Collective, but all the good stuff is at jeskybera.com. I am so thrilled to introduce y'all to one of my accountability gals! Fabienne and I met online because we were both building similar kinds of excitement with our businesses. When she and I were meeting up weekly, I really appreciated her sense of straight-forward clarity and ability to just make something happen. I don't know if you've captured the trend or pivot of the show since we launched my book into the world, but I'll give you a peek into the method of my madness for this upcoming year... If you've been a longtime listener or you've read my book, you'll know there are 12 ingredients of bravery. Since there are 12 months in a year we'll be focusing on one ingredient each month! All the episodes and open-to-the-public workshops will center around these topics. If you want to check out the previous and upcoming workshops go visit http://emilyannpeterson.com/workshops Since the book is out and we're no longer in "research mode" I'm really looking forward to doing some deeper curation of these conversations in the upcoming year. Even though each week's content will be more mapped out in advance, we're still continuing with the organic conversation and the same protocol for all guests being either a nomination from myself or from a previous guest or current listener of the show. If you have a nomination to submit, go to http://barenakedbravery.com and scroll down to the bottom! This month we were camped out on the topic of Vision of Possibility and the workshop was awesome. Next month we're diving into the bravery ingredient of "Power of Choice." So keep your eyes peeled on your email inboxes for the registration info for the next workshop: How to Flow with Life Without Being a Victim. Back to today, since this month's Bravery ingredient theme is Vision of Possibility, I invited Fabienne to do a mini jam session on how she and I envision moving forward as business owners! This is one of her strengths, I know you'll hear that fact in today's conversation. Fabienne Raphaël is a super rad consultant to folks looking to leave their corporate day-job into the online business world. Even if you're not a business owner, I know you'll glean so much from this conversation, as we discuss solutions that can apply to ANY person or situation. So without further ado, let's take the leap and dive in!   Brave Take Away Your Brave Take Away from today's show is to identify what your very next small baby step is. This week aligned pretty perfectly. No surprise there. I had previously scheduled to talk about this subject so the fact that I woke up struggling with this really could not have been more perfect. It is imperative that we call BS when we see it. In ourselves, in others, in our surroundings - if we see folks faking authenticity or trying to be a square peg in a round hole, we need to call it out. So that's what we're talking about today. If numbers and data kinda make your eye roll and blood boil, then today's episode is for you. I recognize not every person wants to dive headfirst into a spreadsheet, but sometimes numbers can be a really easy way to make decisions and plan for your future, especially if your future involves a season of bravery. If you're one of our new community members and haven't heard the phrase "Season of Bravery" yet then allow me to illuminate this for you. A season of bravery can be anything from the year you get divorced, to the year a family has to go through chemo treatments or even promotions at work or seasons of profound creativity. It's a pretty broad definition for explaining that in the next several months, you'll need to be doing a lot of brave things. For some of us (I'm mainly pointed a finger at myself), it seems like every season is a brave season. If you're a longtime listener of the show then you'll know that I routinely go through a Season of Bravery Ritual about every quarter or so. There's a workshop available on my website where I walk you through this ritual process step-by-step to map out goals, dreams, and action plans for these seasons of bravery for yourself. (You can get it by going to http://emilyannpeterson.com/workshops) Now, why am I going on and on about all this??? because in that ritual workshop, I mention going through the previous years numbers. Bank account numbers, miles driven, goals attained, races won, races lost, articles written, anything that can measure the quantity or quality of the previous season of life. We then use some of these number to look forward into the next season of bravery to make plans, measurable plans and goals. I asked Ashley Armstrong (a leading Amazon Seller Strategist who helps companies create amazing results on Amazon) to come talk about how she uses numbers to guide her people to the right choices. She has learned the science of reading numbers like a really good novel and uses that science to advise her clients precisely what products future customers are looking for. Her wisdom and drive is something I know we could all use a dose of from time to time. I'm so happy she's with us today! In today's episode, she and I discuss all of these things and so much more. and I want to remind you that numbers tell stories. So if you're the type of person to roll your eyes at the thought of "reading data points" then I challenge you to stay engaged in this one. Trust me. Ashley and I bring these numbers straight into home base.   Brave Takeaway Beyond your free Bravery Bundle (which is always available at barenakedbravery.com) your Brave Take-Away from today's show is to identify which numbers you might be avoiding, plan the least stressful environment to view those numbers, and then schedule a time to take a gander at them. Sometimes you even need to schedule a time to schedule that time. Ha! I've been there. If you do take that gander at the scary numbers, then I encourage you to pop into the Bare Naked Bravery facebook group to let us know how it went. Otherwise, we always love to hear all about your favorite parts of today's Bare Naked Bravery. You can find Ashley Armstrong and myself on facebook, twitter, instagram, and more. I'm really excited about today's featured conversation. Not only does it mark a pretty significant milestone for this little podcast, but it also is so refreshing to hear. At least, it was a conversation I personally needed to participate in. Real quick though: registration is open for the upcoming free masterclass I'm teaching titled, "How to Find your Confidence Without Bullshitting Yourself." Like I said, the class is free, it's hosted online, and there will be a replay available for those of you who aren't in my timezone. Go register yourself by visiting http://emilyannpeterson.com/workshops Everyone who registers for the class will get the class replay links and corresponding worksheets too! http://emilyannpeterson.com/workshops - I'll look forward to seeing you in class! Okay, so at the time of recording this episode, about 18 months have passed since we spoke to our first ever podcast guest. Both she and I have learned big huge lessons about what it means to be brave as a musician and performing songwriter. So in celebration of the book Bare Naked Bravery being published earlier this month, I wanted to touch back to the beginnings of this show and catch up with Naomi Wachira. If you haven't heard her story or that first episode, I encourage you to do so. However, today's conversation won't lose you because we're talking about the courage of choosing silence, which applies to anyone, anywhere. Especially on the heels of a busy season of hustling, we need that rest and rejuvenation. Naomi and I spend today's conversation swimming through the waters of this silence. It's quite an appropriate conversation for me to have personally because while she's ramping down a busy season, I'm ramping UP my season of speaking up and showing up. Personally, I needed this reminder to intentionally build in the rest, the silence, and the deep nourishment that my soul needs to do its real work in the world. Naomi needed this too. Perfect timing, as always. As with each of the guests on this podcast, Naomi is someone who inspires bravery in me personally. She was one of the first names I wrote down while brainstorming who I'd reach out to, to research this book, the book that is now published with the same name as this podcast, "Bare Naked Bravery: How to Be Creatively Courageous." Side Note: If you haven't purchased it yet, go for it! All formats are available on Amazon right now: hardback, paperback, audiobook, and ebook. (http://a.co/6Iqkikw) And if you've already read it --- what'd you think?! An honest Amazon review would be the perfect next step. Amazon reviews, like iTunes reviews, are how people will find this book. I know there are myriads of folks out there who need to 1) listen to what Naomi and I talk about today, but 2) who also need to hear the stories and bravery building knowledge held within those pages. So Amazon reviews are the answer to that, at least for today. Today's conversation is a perfect example of the nakedness required for big bold actions. Sometimes being still, pausing your movement, and listening on a deeper level takes more bravery than keeping the hustle going. So I'd like you to take a deep breath to make space for a new level of listening... I give you Naomi Wachira. Brave Takeaway Your Brave Take-Away from today's show is to get silent. 5 minutes, 50 minutes - doesn't matter. Take a pause. Sit in the noise. Listen deeply. Sense your external surroundings, feel for your internal landscape. Soak in the silence and then write any observations that come up. If you're in a sharing mood, pop into the Bare Naked Bravery Facebook group and let us know what you observed. If you're not yet a member of the Bare Naked Bravery Community, we'd love to have you. Before we get into today's show, if you are listening to this episode on the Tuesday that it first goes live, then there is still time to jump in on a last minute masterclass I'm teaching on the subject of How to Use Your Fear and Get What you Want. It's free, hosted online, and there will be a replay available for those who signed up on the class list. You can go to emilyannpeterson.com/workshops to get yourself on the list. I'm launching The School of Advanced Bravery soon and this class is just a sampling of what is in store for all of you. Everyone who is on my email list and or who attends the class will get an exclusive invitation and information. but of course, we'll also spend loads of time diving into the process of how you can use your fear to get what you want. If you've ever found yourself with a death grip on resisting change, then this is the class for you. If you are listening to this after the masterclass, then head on over to emilyannpeterson.com/join so you can join my email list and catch the next invitations for free masterclasses coming up. Okay! Let's get on into it today, shall we? Filmmaker and yoga teacher Ann Hedly Rousseau is with us today! She is a mother, wife, dancer, yoga student and instructor, gardener, and lover of life who happens to have alopecia. Alopecia areata is an auto-immune disease that causes hair loss and currently has no cure (besides acceptance - that's a kind of cure!) Ann recently finished her film Mop Cap: An Alopecia Story which lays out her latest hair loss journey. It was so fascinating to hear Ann work through some of these questions about identity, ego, compensation, and image. I knew I had to have her on the Bare Naked Bravery podcast and I'm so glad it worked out. Today we dive a little deeper into the audacious luxury of hair and being bald. We talk about the ways we show up in the world with or without our egos. We discussed the favoritism of ideal beauty and how the rest of us choose to compensate. Ann holds a BFA in dance and choreography and had a career as a modern dancer in NYC before she moved to Appleton, Maine in 2001. Ann became an RYT in 2000 and has been teaching yoga for 19 years.   Ann is fascinated by personal stories, this is partly what makes her such a  great fit for the Bare Naked Bravery community. I know that telling her own story through her documentary "Mop Cap: An Alopecia Story" has been enormously healing and I can't wait for you to hear all about it... Brave Take-Aways Beyond your free Bravery Bundle (which is always available at barenakedbravery.com) your Brave Take-Away from today's show is to spend an entire week asking yourself the two questions Ann mentioned regarding her choice to wear a hat or not. Except you'll ask these questions every time you're getting dressed. "Am I choosing this outfit because of my comfort? or Am I choosing this outfit for the comfort of others?" Neither answer is inherently right or wrong, but I do think that extra layer of awareness will assist in your curious discovery of the concepts she and I discussed in today's episode. We'd love to hear all about your favorite parts of today's Bare Naked Bravery. You can find Ann Rousseau and myself on facebook, twitter, instagram, and more. In reaction to how close the publishing date for my book was the other day someone asked me, "Are you just so proud of yourself?!"  The question caught me off guard because if I'm being honest I wasn't proud of myself. Emily Ann Peterson wrote the book “Bare Naked Bravery: How to Be Creatively Courageous” after she was diagnosed with a degenerative neurological hand tremor, which changed her career as a cellist/cello teacher forever. And in our conversation today, we dive into all of it. Her journey, the hard parts, and what bravery REALLY is. We talk about… what her journey to figuring out what bravery really is looked like living with uncertainty in your life regarding your physical abilities the feeling when you know your life is forever changed what bravery really feels like (and it’s not brave) what fear + vulnerability have to do with bravery   WHO IS EMILY ANN PETERSON? In 2013, Emily Ann Peterson was diagnosed with a degenerative neurological hand tremor, which forever altered her two-decade livelihood as a cellist/cello teacher. Refusing to lose her life's love of expression, she knew she’d have to be brave. In an act of neurological defiance, she expanded into wider mediums and broke through her creative glass ceiling, opening the door to limitless possibilities through songwriting.  Her book Bare Naked Bravery: How to Be Creatively Courageous helps people from all walks of life understand what bravery really is - allowing them to step into it by creatively using vulnerability, imagination and improvisation. Her podcast, Bare Naked Bravery, features conversations with everyday heroes and creative entrepreneurs about the quiet successes and loud failures required to do the brave things for which we know and love them. Alongside the podcast, Emily also facilitates a Facebook group that offers a welcoming, safe community for creative misfits to finally find belonging and acceptance. Emily writes for people who struggle to remember what hope feels like and sings to those who yearn for something secret. She speaks to those who are done being bored and crave all things beautiful, strong, sacred, and sensual. Her goal is to inspire a global resonance and magnanimous community through the marriage of art and whole-person development.

Over this last year, in anticipation of my book publishing later this month, I've appeared on a lot of podcasts as a guest. One of my favorite interviews to be a part of was for the Courage & Clarity podcast, hosted by Steph Crowder. Love her. Well, Steph also released another conversation with someone whose story exemplifies so much of what we talk about here on the show that as I was listening to it, I was thinking, "The Bare Naked Bravery folks need to hear this. Wouldn't it be so cool to get to talk with her?!" Well, fate would have it that I was driving at the time and forgot to write down "Contact Catherine Rains" on my to-do list. But evidently, Catherine was thinking the same thing and contacted US! So you guys, this is gonna be a great story about growing up with a bi-polar parent, quitting your job for art, battling cancer, getting divorced, and then quitting your job again to go back into art full-time. Catherine Rains is the artist behind @TheHotelArtist on Instagram - go check her out, because not only does she have a phenomenal story, but her work is wonderful too. One of the things I love most about Catherine's story is how level-headed she is, which is really a testament to how not-chaotic bravery can sometimes be. I think it's easy to forget that even though you're accomplishing great and wonderful things, that you can still have your wits about you and not lose your sanity. So get ready to listen to a wildly sane and grounded story of being a visual artist with extra doses of hutzpah.   This week I needed to hop on a soapbox. I saw a quote the other day attributed to the lovely Brené Brown which I (shockingly) disagreed with. Normally, I love Brené's work, but the quote I read of hers did not sit right with me. So in today's podcast episode, I outline why I disagree and how I would've said what she said a little differently. It is my belief and I've witnessed this to be true in countless environments, that we MUST constantly evaluate ourselves in order to have constant improvement. Holding ourselves against the standards of our defiant expectation is imperative to nurture the growth and progress we hope to see in the world. I also know it's super important to not just constantly evaluate yourself but to also clearly outline how that improvement could occur. We don't need to give ourselves rejection, we need guidance and encouragement. But we can't give quality guidance and encouragement without identifying our current situation and where we expect to go. Also in this episode is 1) how much I really do love Brené Brown's work and 2) an exercise that you can do at home to practice this new method of constant improvement. Enjoy! Bailie Slevin is with us today to talk about money and making it! This year has been my "year of money" and what I've noticed is that I actually *like* talking about money and making money. That was not always the case. It used to be something that I avoided like the plague, but after making the choice to "befriend" it, I've learned that it's a really powerful tool and completely relates to bravery, especially bravery as an artist. Bailie is a guest nomination from a previous Bare Naked Bravery guest, Yuri Cataldo! I always love it when we get to see Resonant Bravery in action. If you're a new listener of Bare Naked Bravery, I'd say about 90% of the guests you hear are now nominations from either a listener or a previous guest, which is so cool. FYI - if you know of someone who you'd like to hear on the show, you can submit them by going to barenakedbravery.com and scrolling all the way to the bottom. There's a link down there waiting for your nomination! Okay, back to Bailie Slevin. She is the founder of Entertaining Finance which is a financial consulting firm based in New York City, geared specifically towards creatives and freelancers of all genres. Bailie is the perfect combination of finance ninja and theater nerd. With 12 years of experience as a financial adviser and a hefty resume in theater, she is redefining planning for artists and entrepreneurs. Today we talk about Bailie's own day-job pivot points, and she gives us some great advice for *any* level of a career as an artist or creative. We talk about how important it is to start saving right now. We talk about how our priorities should align with our values as an artist and how that plays into the financial world. We talk about what to do when your lifestyle is trapping or holding you back. We talk about who to use the right language when talking about yourself and your professionalism. We talk about how to break into a new level of income as an artist. and we also talk about how to even out the income bumps that almost any freelancer experiences. That being said, I've gotten really burned by making some really audacious goals and not being able to attain them. There's an art to making plans, especially plans that you can stick to. That's what this week's Bare Naked Bravery podcast episode is all about: how to plan for seasons of bravery! Obviously, the end of the year is the time where a LOT of folks are making new year's resolutions and preparing for the next year. It's a good thing to do. However, most folks end up quitting those resolutions within the first week. Been there. Done that! So I've created a new workshop on How to Conduct Your Own Season of Bravery Ritual for this very purpose. Get ready for the most amazing rest of your life. and I don't mean the remainder of your life (although that will happen too.) I'm specifically referring to your rest as in relaxation and sleep. Today we have Karen Brody with us! She wrote the book Daring to Rest: a 40-day program for Women which uses yoga nidra techniques to restore your body's ability to function at a really powerful level. Karen had a long personal history of severe panic attacks until she found yoga nidra meditation over a decade ago. At that time, she was a sleep-deprived mother of two small children on anti-anxiety medication. She signed up for a yoga nidra meditation class simply looking to lie down for a nap. What she got was “the best nap of her life.” As she continued to practice yoga nidra regularly, her deep fatigue lifted; she wrote a critically acclaimed play, got off anti-anxiety pills, and started to teach this yoga nidra “power nap” to every exhausted mother she knew. If you've been a listener of the show for awhile, then you'll know that I've had my own strange journey with learning what my body can and cannot handle and how that relates to my burnout rate. I'll get into that later in the episode, but I'm stoked to introduce you to Karen Brody and her book. In fact... If you're listening to this episode before January 8th, 2018 and you've purchased her book then you're invited to join Karen Brody and I for a Rest Cleanse! If you go to daringtorest.com/newbook and click the Book Bonuses button you'll be prompted to submit your receipt number and email address. She'll walk us through this 40 days of rest outlined in her book. I know I'm going to need it because my own book is releasing January 28th (put it in your calendar!) and I'll need the accountability to maintain my sanity and bliss throughout the whole book launch season. Karen Brody is a speaker, certified yoga nidra instructor, and the founder of Daring to Rest™, a yoga nidra-based self-empowerment program for women. Her work has been featured in Better Homes & Gardens, and she's a regular contributor to The Huffington Post. She's also a critically acclaimed playwright; Birth, her theater-for-social-change play has been seen in over 75 cities around the world and raised over $1M to improve maternity care. I've really been looking forward to having someone one the show to talk about Imagination and specifically how that looks in quantum physics. Now, before you tune out and roll your eyes about either science or magical mysterious stuff that we typically have a hard time explaining, I want you to know this stuff really does matter. We see so much pain and suffering in the world and it's easy to get caught up in the sameness and finite path that our culture is going down. This is exactly why I invited psychotherapist and author Mel Schwartz onto the show today. He just wrote this book called "The Possibility Principle: How Quantum Physics Can Improve the Way You Think, Live, and Love" It's a fantastic place for someone to dive into this subject matter and really learn how to use the knowledge it can offer us. Mel and I chat about the power that lies behind doors that we're nervous about opening. We talk about the mysteriousness of synchronicity, and how to lean into your intuition. We talk about how much we need to infuse more wonder into our lives, and how that curiosity can flip on huge light bulbs or even just soften dark, scary seasons of life. Mel is the perfect person to talk about this stuff because he's one of the few practicing psychotherapists who is integrating these principles of quantum physics into a psychotherapeutic approach. He knows how to apply this stuff to the every day even though his graduate degree is from Columbia University. He's authored a ton of other articles and books on subjects around these concepts, so he knows what he's talking about.   Brave Take-Aways Today's Brave-Take away is to do a mini writing session on your own. Take a moment that happens to you almost every day. This could be making coffee, walking the dog, etc. For 5 minutes, write and describe that moment as it happens, step by step. Then duplicate that little paragraph, but insert the word "wonder" as many times as you can. Maybe you change the statement from "I take the brewed coffee and then I poured the cream" into "After taking the brewed coffee, I wondered what could happen when I stir the cream." Basically, I want you to take something monotonous and turn it into something magical. Maybe the presence of the word "wonder" in your writing, totally changes everything? If that's true, then I wonder *wink* what could happen for all of our lives if we infuse wonder a little more often... We'd love to hear all about your favorite parts of today's Bare Naked Bravery. Earlier this week I submitted the final manuscript of my book Bare Naked Bravery: How to Be Creatively Courageous to my formatter. It's official. I can no longer make changes or edits or additions to my book. The line in the sand has been drawn. That was my final answer. (At least for this first edition.) To celebrate such a nerve-wracking accomplishment, I reached for my phone, posted several fun announcements on social media, did a quick “hooray” via Facebook livestream in the Bare Naked Bravery Community group, and then I took 2 shots of tequila. As the liquid courage hit my bloodstream, I began to ask myself… “Why is it that we celebrate bravery after-the-fact? Why can't we celebrate before it happens more often?” This line of questioning brought me to a whole weekend of ruminating on what rituals mean and how we can build and create them to empower our future bravery as well as celebrate our past feats of bravery. So I dove alllll the way in. I started writing about it, adding to my personal knowledge and experience of rituals by researching it… lo and behold! I created a beautiful workshop on the very subject! (More on that here.) To give a taste of the things I uncovered in this weekend obsession, this week's peep show episode of the Bare Naked Bravery podcast is all about how we can build our bravery with the help of rituals! I am kinda nervous about sharing this conversation, because our guest today is one of my personal performance coaches. She's amazing and in the same breath, I know she knows things about me, my performance, and how I show up in the world that I don't always reveal to my audiences. Vicki Ambinder is with us today and even though I'm a little nervous about opening up this discussion to y'all with someone who knows so much about my inner artist workings, I'm excited. I'm excited because Vicki has some seriously amazing tools to share with us about how to connect with an audience, how to stay in the "zone of genius" during a performance, and how to practice things that are difficult. ALL of those things relate directly to being brave and therefore this podcast. Which is precisely why I asked her if she'd join us on today's episode. Vicki Ambinder is based in Portland, Oregon and so the majority of her and I's sessions together have been via online forms. However, I first met Vicki because she randomly picked me as a guinea pig for a performance coaching session she gave at the FAR-WEST Folk Alliance Regional conference just over a year ago. Vicki is really good at what she does. She's been at it for nearly 40 years by helping musicians and bands to improve and enhance their live and studio performing skills and to work toward their artistic goals. She is also a CD preproduction consultant and studio vocal tracks producer for independent and self-producing recording artists. In addition to coaching clients across the country and in Canada, Vicki teaches performance master classes and workshops for music conferences, camps, festivals, musician's organizations, and private groups. She also posts some in-depth conversations about performance with artists like Sarah Jarosz, Holly Near, Julia Sweeney, Tim O'Brien, Todd Snider, and Sam Bush. MJ Fitzpatrick is a dynamite Australian and I'm super stoked to have him on the show today. He's got a story that even though the details might be different from yours and mine, the experience, the pain, the tribulation, the total hell he went through might still be very similar to yours. Y'all. In this conversation, MJ quotes Oprah. and I'm gonna let that sink in for a bit, because I'm SOOOO glad he did! I love her. MJ will forever go in my book as the first male who has quoted Oprah to my face. So amazing. Today MJ Fitzpatrick and I discuss what it's like to live in hell, the different types of hell, the only thing that can get you out of hell, and how we can get back to joy even if it's just for a brief moment in the midst of hell. We also talk about why it's so stinking common (and yet amazing) to witness someone use their wounds, their experience of hell, to create joy and a life they actually look forward to living. This is a really good episode y'all. So hang on tight!
