Episode Summary: Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) stand forth as one of the most important airpower developments of the twenty-first century. We learn more about CCA by talking to two of the people involved with developing and building them: Mike Atwood from General Atomics and Andrew “Scar” Van Timmeren of Anduril. CCA's ability to harness the traditional attributes of range, speed, survivability, and a broad range of mission effects with the power of autonomy, artificial intelligence, and manned-unmanned teaming will yield an incredibly powerful tool for airmen and the broader joint military enterprise. We explain this technological journey, explore where the program currently stands, and discuss the pathway for production, test, and initial operational fielding. AP Language and Literature teacher and host, Mike Atwood interviews AP® guru, John Williamson about the best practices and essential skills required for effective AP instruction. Throughout the conversation, John points to how teachers need to focus on teaching students the art of weaving in “Can't Touch This!” abstract ideas into their FRQs in order to elevate lines or reasoning, creating sophistication. The two discuss the essential use of creative graphic organizers to analyze ideas, and organize key planning points in essays, as well as the use of multi-cultural literature blended in with what used to be “The Literary Cannon” for required student reading. John even poses the question “Is there even a Literary Cannon anymore?” His mantra of focusing on quality instruction and best practices, as well as the idea that “Less is more” when it comes to assigning reading and longer essays becomes clear as shares his rich experience as an AP® teacher, College Board leader, Dean of P12 Programs and Superintendent Model Laboratory School at Eastern Kentucky University. “It’s not taking pilots out of planes. It’s putting propellers on smart phones.” So says Chris Anderson, co-founder of 3D Robotics describing “Solo,” the world’s first Smart Drone. Anderson was among a group of leading engineers in unmanned aerial vehicles gathered on the USS Midway to inspire San Diego students to consider careers in high technology. Others on board included Mike Atwood and Darren Moe of General Atomics describing the military missions of the “Predator” UAV, George Guerre of Northrop Grumman adding how its “Global Hawk” drone is also used for weather surveillance and other humanitarian purposes and finally, Mike Veale of San Diego Zoo Safari Park touched many in the audience by explaining how he plans to use drones to stop the poaching of rhinos and elephants in Africa. This event was presented as part of the STEAM Leadership Series, created by Intellectual Capital, KidsEcoClub and the Education Synergy Alliance.
