Send us a textIn this episode, hosts Scott Kuhlman and Chasity Owens record live from the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) International Training Conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey. With nearly 900 attendees at the conference, the hosts discuss the value of networking and the exciting atmosphere of the event, intentionally keeping background noise to give listeners the authentic conference experience. Scott and Chasity begin by emphasizing the importance of connection in the fire investigation community, encouraging listeners to attend these conferences, bring business cards, and engage with experienced professionals. The hosts share their excitement about upcoming interview segments with industry leaders including Doug Byron and Elaine Pope, which will be released in future episodes. The main segment features an interview with Sawyer Garriques, chair of the IAAI Student Committee, who discusses the vital role of the committee in connecting students with industry professionals. Sawyer, a fire investigator for an insurance carrier who graduated from Eastern Kentucky University, explains how the student committee works to bridge the gap between education and professional practice. He shares information about student memberships ($50 annually compared to the regular $100 fee), the resources available through IAAI, and upcoming virtual events including a career fair planned for September. Sawyer emphasizes that anyone interested in fire investigation can reach out to students@firearson.com, even if they're not technically students. The episode also includes a brief segment with Tim Costa from Clean Space, who discusses their respiratory protection products designed specifically for fire investigators. The hosts close with their regular segment, "Can You Use It in a Sentence," where they explain fire science terminology, including laminar versus turbulent flames and premixed versus diffusion combustion. Scott introduces "networking" as the word of the week, highlighting its importance at conferences like the IAAI. Throughout the episode, Scott and Chasity emphasize their commitment to connecting new investigators with resources and mentors in the field, making this live conference episode a perfect example of their mission to share knowledge and ignite curiosity in fire investigation.Thank you for listening! Recording from the California Conference of Arson Investigators February Seminar, the trio dives deep into the world of fire investigation with plenty of expert insights and good-natured banter.Dr. Gorbett shares his fascinating journey into fire investigation, starting with his family's firefighting background and how a gutsy decision to volunteer for a 45-million-dollar loss investigation in Dallas led him to connections with industry legends like Pat Kennedy. The conversation explores the evolution of fire investigation education, with Dr. Gorbett explaining how EKU's program has grown since the 1970s to become one of the nation's premier fire investigation educational institutions. The episode tackles several cutting-edge topics in fire investigation, including the challenges of standardizing damage assessment. The hosts also explore how ventilation affects fire patterns, with Scott suggesting the need for simple acronyms to help new investigators remember critical assessment steps at scenes. One particularly engaging segment covers the importance of proper terminology in fire investigation reports, with Dr. Gorbett explaining why he discourages terms like "heavy fire damage" and use of personal pronouns in technical writing. The group shares how these teaching moments have stuck with them throughout their careers, often hearing Dr. Gorbett's voice in their heads when writing reports. The episode wraps up with a discussion on the balance between education and experience, with Dr. Gorbett emphasizing that while formal education provides a foundation, on-the-job training and good mentorship remain crucial for developing skilled investigators. The hosts introduce their recurring segment "Can You Use It In A Sentence," challenging listeners to learn the definition of "heuristic" for the next episode.Packed with professional insights, personal anecdotes, and plenty of fire investigation nerding-out, this episode offers valuable knowledge for both seasoned investigators and those new to the field.Thank you for listening! Christine Schelble is the Director of Insurance and Risk Management at GE Appliances, a Haier company. She is one of the founding members of what is now the Greater Bluegrass Chapter of RIMS, which won the 2024 Chapter of the Year Award at RISKWORLD. [2:49] Christine has decades of experience leading risk management initiatives for global companies. We will learn about what it takes to be in that sort of position, how she progressed throughout her career, and when and where she saw opportunities and took them. [3:07] This will be a fun way to kick off 2025; let's get started! Christine Schelble, welcome to RIMScast! [3:18] GE sold GE Appliances on June 6, 2016, to Haier, the world's largest home appliance company. They are located in China. Christine works for Haier U.S. Appliance Solutions, Inc. doing business as GE Appliances, a Haier Company. It is the Haier U.S. headquarters. [4:09] Christine is a department of one. She works with people throughout the company. The goal of risk management is to spread that philosophy throughout the company. It has only improved since she started. She has lots of support when it comes to claims and coverage. [5:11] Christine had come from a technology company and was very familiar with the technology supply chain. When she came on board, she met with the supply chain people to learn their philosophy and processes. The only time she gets involved with them is for an insurance claim. [6:05] In appliances, Christine says there are so many “Black Fridays” in the year that you can see the returns ebb and flow throughout the year. It's not a serious problem. [6:44] Christine left Lexmark in 2001 after 15 years. One of her risk management connections called her and said that the position was opening at GE Appliances. She wanted new challenges so she sent in her resume, interviewed with them, and got the position. [7:43] Christine says it's one of the best jobs she's ever had. She's been able to take everything that she's learned and implement it into a startup program. That has been rewarding. When she started, it was the first time GE Appliances was managing and purchasing insurance coverage. [8:23] Christine joined GE Appliances three months after the sale and took a couple of months to understand how things worked. She started making changes at her first renewal because she could see where things hadn't worked out in relationships and coverage. [9:25] Risk management for your company is not a static position. It's constantly changing. You've got to constantly look at what's going on in the insurance market and what's going on internally and adapt your coverages, deductibles, and maybe your relationship with your TPA. [9:17] The way the program looked in 2016 when she came in is not the way it looks now. [9:30] The biggest third-party GE Appliances works with is the claims administrator. Otherwise, Christine works with brokers. Currently, she works with three different brokers for the competition. If the relationship is not great, she'll change the people on her account. [10:28] For risk managers coming up in the industry, Christine recommends keeping up with your education, getting your designations, attending webinars and seminars, and doing everything you can to keep up with what's going on in the insurance market. It's constantly changing. [10:49] Christine will do an RFP when she's looking to change something. You've got to have face-to-face conversations with your brokers, carriers, and TPAs. You have to educate them on your business and products. Your company and products are not the same as another's. [11:41] If you're just moving to a TPA because they gave you the lowest price, it's not going to work unless you work with them and have an ongoing relationship. Christine has them come in, meet her people, go through some of GE Appliance's processes, and see the plants. [12:01] Christine has done the same things in her previous jobs, as well. [12:15] TPAs changed how they worked during the pandemic. The TPA world will continue to change in reaction to changes in the world.  [12:50] Christine has a process for developing an RFP. She starts with having a non-disclosure agreement in place. That's very important. Then she shares exposure information, the insurance schedule, the actuary report, and a loss run or two, so they can understand the overall risk.   [13:33] She puts hot points into the RFP, how to move claims forward, and how the program should be improved and moved forward. That's been her philosophy throughout her career. [14:17] Plug Time! RIMS Webinars! Resolver will be joining us on February 6th with a topic to be arranged. [14:25] HUB International continues its Ready for Tomorrow Series with RIMS. On February 20th, they will host “Ready for the Unexpected? Strategies for Property Valuation, Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity in 2025”. [14:41] More webinars will be announced soon and added to the RIMS.org/webinars page. Go there to register. Registration is complimentary for RIMS members. [14:52] Nominations are also open for the Donald M. Stuart Award which recognizes excellence in risk management in Canada. Links are in this episode's show notes. [15:04] The Spencer Educational Foundation's goal to help build a talent pipeline of risk management and insurance professionals is achieved in part by its collaboration with risk management and insurance educators across the U.S. and Canada. [15:22] Since 2010, Spencer has awarded over $3.3 million in general grants to support over 130 student-centered experiential learning initiatives at universities and RMI non-profits. Spencer's 2026 application process will open on May 1st, 2025, and close on July 30th, 2025. [15:45] General grant awardees are typically notified at the end of October. Learn more about Spencer's general grants through the Programs tab at SpencerEd.org. [15:57] Back to the Conclusion of My Interview with Christine Schelble!  [16:23] Christine shares how she works as a department of one. She just continues to do what she's educated to do. When she looks back, it feels great to see all that she has done. It's important to get the relationships going so that people can trust you. [16:49] Christine works with the Finance, the supply chain, the manufacturing finance people, and Legal, where she is located. It's about building the trust factor. [17:12] Christine is a long-time member of the  RIMS Kentucky and Bluegrass Chapters, which are now the RIMS Greater Bluegrass Chapter. Christine has been in RIMS since she started in risk management. She loves the support from other risk professionals and the networking. [18:13] Christine started with RIMS in the D.C. area, then in Connecticut. She moved to New Jersey and was in RIMS in New Jersey and New York. When she moved to Kentucky, she joined the chapter. She was president for a year or two around 2003 or 2004. [18:46] Christine is thrilled that the younger members of the community have started the chapter back up. During economic downturns there was a loss of people and others couldn't get out to meetings. The same five people were doing the same job and they were ready to pass the torch. [19:21] It took several years for the torch to come back up. Christine acknowledges the work of Jeremy, Erica, Britt, and Brittany in getting the chapter up and going again. Christine is more than happy to help and support them by sitting on the board. [19:50] The Greater Bluegrass Chapter of RIMS was named the 2024 Chapter of the Year. Christine says that was a good feeling. It was fun to support them at RISKWORLD 2024 in receiving that award. [20:42] Christine is thrilled to see that in the younger generations, there are more women in higher positions within insurance carriers and brokers. When she started, there weren't as many. She says it is such a great career, whether you are male, female, or whatever. It's amazing! [21:22] Christine is thrilled to see that more schools offer risk and insurance as a degree. The Greater Bluegrass Chapter supports Eastern Kentucky University and its risk and insurance curriculum with an annual golf tournament in September that raises money for scholarships. [21:55] The Greater Bluegrass Chapter has also asked the university to have a student become a member to help expand their knowledge into the RIMS world. Justin mentions Spencer's Risk Manager on Campus program. He thanks Christine for her continued service in RIMS. Welcome to Paranormal Spectrum, where we illuminate the enigmatic corners of the supernatural world. I'm your host, Barnaby Jones, and today we have a very special guest joining us:Zach Bales has had an interest in the paranormal for as long as he can remember. Growing up in rural Kentucky in the foothills of Appalachia, Bales spent much of his youth fascinated by tales of ghosts, monsters, and “little green men.” His interest in the paranormal has taken him to the far corners of the North American continent and to twenty-eight countries on five continents.Over the years, Bales has come face to face with many of Earth's most compelling mysteries—from the jungles of Latin America to the antique lands of Northern Africa, from the moors of England and Scotland to the cradle of civilization in the Middle East. Bales documented many of these encounters in his five books—The Amateur's Guide to Ghost Hunting, The Expert's Guide to Ghost Hunting, The Bigfooter's Atlas, The UFO Chaser's Atlas, and The Atlas of the Unexplained: Mothman. In December 2020, The Bigfooter's Atlas was recognized as the “Book of the Year” by the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine. Bales' fascination with folklore and storytelling led him to pursue a career in the study of English language and literature. After obtaining a BA from Eastern Kentucky University and an MA from the University of the Cumberlands, Bales sought a position in Secondary English Education, where he has spent the better part of two decades. In October 2020, Bales was recognized as the Kentucky Teacher of the Week. Bales is a regular on the convention and festival circuit, appearing alongside his wife, Melissa, at events throughout the United States. Bales has been featured in television and film as well as on a number of nationally syndicated radio programs. In 2022, Bales opened Paranormal Roadtripper's Nightmare Gallery in Somerset, Kentucky, which features his collection of curiosities—a menagerie of the unusual, the unexplained, and the otherworldly—as well as a one-of-a-kind gift shop. In 2024, the Nightmare Gallery doubled in size, making it one of the largest exhibits of its kind anywhere in the world.Click that play button, and let's unravel the mysteries of the UNTOLD! Send us a textChristian Nationalism is an ideology that's everywhere, masquerades as a theology that has infected our politics and seeks to guide our policies locally and nationally. The problem with Christian Nationalism is that it doesn't have anything to do with the Jesus of the Bible. Exposing Christian Nationalism, our new series, will discuss this every Friday in September. Our first guest is Dr. Michael W. Austin, author of American Christian Nationalism: Neither American nor Christian. Bishop Wright and Dr. Austin have a conversation about how figures like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Jimmy Carter have harnessed their faith to foster inclusion and the common good, challenging the exclusionary and coercive tendencies of Christian Nationalism. Dr. Austin provides a nuanced examination of how this ideology clashes with core American values and Christian principles, offering a vision for a more harmonious and inclusive form of Christian political engagement. Listen in for the full conversation. Dr. Michael W. Austin is Foundation Professor of Philosophy at Eastern Kentucky University, Bonhoeffer Senior Fellow of the Miller Center for Interreligious Learning and Leadership at Hebrew College, and current president of the Evangelical Philosophical Society. He received a B.A. in political science from Kansas State University, an M.A. in philosophy from Talbot School of Theology, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Colorado, Boulder. His research is focused on ethics and spiritual formation, especially issues related to the cultivation of character and connections between character and the common good. He's published 15 books, including Humility and Human Flourishing (Oxford University Press, 2018) and God and Guns in America (Eerdmans, 2020). His latest book is Humility: Rediscovering the Way of Love and Life in Christ (Eerdmans, 2024). CTL Script/ Top Stories of August 10th                Publish Date: August 10th                  From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Award-Winning Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast    Today is Saturday, August 10th and Happy 66th Birthday to actor Antonio Banderas. ***08.10.24 – BIRTHDAY – ANTONIO BANDERAS*** I'm Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Holly Springs Considering Increasing Property Taxes Cherokee County Approves Coroner Pay Raise Here's What's Next for the Ga. 140 and Univeter Road Intersection Project   We'll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you're looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    Commercial: CU of GA STORY 1: Holly Springs Considering Increasing Property Taxes Holly Springs is considering raising its millage rate from 3.841 to 4 mills, potentially increasing property taxes by 4.85% over the rollback rate. The proposed rate would generate $4.36 million in revenue, $201,536 more than at the rollback rate. This would increase taxes by $36.08 for an average home and $5.74 for homes with senior tax exemptions. Concerns about the increase include the city's financial health and inflation impacts. Public hearings are scheduled for Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Holly Springs Public Safety Building. The council is expected to adopt the budget in November. STORY 2: Cherokee County Approves Coroner Pay Raise Cherokee County's coroner, Sally Sims, will receive a pay raise to $90,000 annually, starting Oct. 1. This increase from her current $60,000 base salary, plus fees, aligns her compensation with similar positions in surrounding counties. The salary will not be reduced during her term unless adjusted by state law. In addition to the base salary, Sims will continue receiving per-investigation fees set by state law. The raise brings her salary closer to those in comparable counties and ensures she receives annual cost-of-living adjustments and the same benefits as other constitutional officers. STORY 3:   Here's What's Next for the Ga. 140 and Univeter Road Intersection Project Cherokee County is advancing its Highway 140 at Univeter Road intersection improvement project by approving a non-reimbursable right-of-way contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). This contract requires the county to cover the $2,810,000 cost of acquiring the right-of-way without reimbursement. The project will add dual left-turn lanes and widen both roads through the intersection. The county is also seeking an update to the Atlanta Regional Commission's Transportation Improvement Program to potentially secure additional funding. Design work and preliminary plans are underway, with federal funds expected to cover 80% of the project's total cost.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info.    Back in a moment  Break: DRAKE STORY 4:  Canton Breaks Ground on Tanner Place   Construction has begun on Tanner Place, a new public housing community on Shipp Street in Canton, which will feature 70 units to replace the 39 demolished from an older development. The project, expected to cost around $24 million and complete in 2025, will include 16 one-bedroom, 19 two-bedroom, 28 three-bedroom, and seven four-bedroom units. Funded by Low Income Housing Tax Credits and HUD vouchers, Tanner Place aims to offer affordable housing with amenities such as a laundry room, pavilion, and computer center. This development marks the city's first new public housing in nearly 50 years. STORY 5:  Cherokee Leaders Asking for Lower Density at Pearidge Development Cherokee County officials have requested that Pearidge Land Investments reduce the density of their proposed mixed-use development in the Pearidge community. The plan includes 196 single-family homes, 32 townhomes, and commercial space on 70.72 acres. The county wants the density reduced from 3-4 units per acre to 2-3 units per acre. The Canton City Council has postponed a public hearing to October 3 to allow time for revisions and public input. The development will require annexing 62.66 acres into the city and rezoning from residential and institutional to mixed-use. Improvements to access roads and emergency entrances are also under discussion. Commercial: INGLES 8 STORY 6:    Bracco Leaves Sequoyah to Join College Staff Sequoyah boys basketball coach Scott Bracco is leaving after one season to become an assistant coach at Stetson University. Bracco led Sequoyah to an 18-11 record and a state playoff berth. With 25 years of coaching experience, including two state championships and multiple awards, Bracco is excited to work with Stetson's respected coach Donnie Jones. Stetson, which won the ASUN Conference championship last season, is looking to continue its success. Sequoyah has promoted Mike Saxton, Bracco's assistant, to head coach, who will lead the team with key players like Brendan Tousignaut returning. STORY 7:    Cherokee Fire Department Celebrates Recent Explorer Graduate Madison Hall, a recent graduate of the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services Fire Explorer program, is set to advance in fire protection. She will start at Eastern Kentucky University this fall, majoring in Fire Protection Administration with a minor in Arson and Explosion Investigation. Over the summer, Hall gained hands-on experience with fire investigations alongside Division Chief Cheri Collett and earned a scholarship to the Georgia Fire Investigators Southeastern Training Conference, where she was recognized by the Georgia Fire Investigators Association. The Cherokee County Fire Department commended Hall's achievements and looks forward to her future contributions in firefighting.     We'll have closing comments after this.    COMMERCIAL: Heller 3   SIGN OFF –   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast.
