Our respiratory system provides oxygen to and removes carbon dioxide from the body. To function properly, the lungs need to fill up with fresh air upon inhalation. Unfortunately, for a variety of medical reasons, the amount of air that reaches the lungs can be insufficient, causing respiratory distress. Healthcare providers often administer liquid drugs in the trachea to ensure prompt relief. In this program, Emilie Dressaire, professor of mechanical engineering at UC Santa Barbara, discusses how the liquid drugs make their way down to the lungs. To answer open questions on drug delivery, her team has built an experimental system that is currently in Space. She presents the journey from UCSB to the International Space Station and shares the first results. Series: "GRIT Talks" [Science] [Show ID: 40087]

In 1957, the USSR launched Sputnik 1, the first human object to leave Earth. In the 65 years since then the region of Earth orbit has become filled with satellites and space junk. The proliferation of debris has led to the prediction of Kessler Syndrome, a state where a never-ending cascade of collisions between orbital objects renders parts of space unusable for human purposes. However, there are many different ways to look at the space junk surrounding Earth. For example, it is also an archaeological record of humanity's first steps into outer space, a cultural landscape created by the combined effects of natural and cultural processes, and a technological signature of the same kind that SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) researchers are looking for around exoplanets in other solar systems. Charlynda is a Tennessee native who spent 11 years active duty in the U.S. Air Force, the last five of which have been at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. While still on active duty, Charlynda founded a Dayton-based business called " Mutt's Sauce," producing an all-purpose sauce based on a family recipe her late grandfather bequeathed to her. She is a Clemson University graduate, with a degree in Aerospace Science and Business Management. She also holds an MBA in Management and Strategic Leadership. Back in September, I spoke with veteran and entrepreneur Charlynda Scales. Charlynda is CEO of Mutt's Sauce. I am so inspired by her resiliency. During this episode, we talk about her struggles after a divorce and while embarking on the journey of entrepreneurship. She has such a never-give-up attitude that is infectious. When I finished our conversation, I immediately went to work trying to find a program that would help take Leaders Lead to the next level. The next level for us was asking for help. She inspired me!  Charlynda Scales is a TEDx speaker, brand ambassador, Air Force Veteran, social media influencer, and the founder and CEO of Mutt's Sauce, LLC, a company that makes “the sauce for every meal.” Mutt's Sauce was the Grand Prize Winner of Bob Evan's Farms' 2017 Heroes to CEOs Contest. It’s day 24 of the partial government shutdown and so far there doesn’t appear to be an end in sight. Last week, dozens of aviation industry groups sent a letter to President Trump and congressional leaders yesterday urging an end to the partial government shutdown and stressing the harm it's doing to their industry. Transportation Security Officers (TSA), border protection agents, and air traffic controllers have been forced to work without pay, new planes and new air routes have been sidelined. TSA workers have been calling in sick, and unions report all air traffic controller training has been suspended. Host Dan Loney talks with Roger W.
