California drivers are feeling the squeeze as gas prices surge nearly 40 cents in just two weeks, driven by major refinery closures that are tightening the state’s already limited fuel supply. With the statewide average now hovering around $4.58 per gallon, Californians are paying far more than the national average of about $2.92. The wind‑down of Valero’s Benicia refinery and the closure of Phillips 66’s Los Angeles facility have left the state with only six operating refineries, amplifying volatility and pushing prices sharply upward. Also, Karoline Leavitt talks gas prices during the White House press briefing. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom for a landmark civil trial examining whether platforms like Instagram were deliberately engineered to be addictive and harmful to young users. Attorneys argue that Meta’s design choices function like “digital casinos,” pulling children into endless engagement loops. Zuckerberg’s testimony—his first before a jury—comes as more than a thousand plaintiffs claim long‑term mental‑health damage linked to early social media use. A catastrophic sewer line collapse has sent more than 240 million gallons of raw sewage into the Potomac River, triggering what the EPA calls an ecological crisis of “historic proportion.” The political finger‑pointing around the Potomac River sewage disaster has become almost as messy as the spill itself. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and other regional leaders argue the federal government bears responsibility for coordinating the response to one of the largest sewage spills in U.S. history. Meanwhile, environmental advocates note that DC Water operates the failed Potomac Interceptor pipe and had already identified it as needing repair. The Nevada County Sheriff's Office said the avalanche was reported around 11:30 a.m. amid a heavy snowstorm that has closed both Interstate 80 and Highway 50 at the summit. The argument is being made that this is wrong as a matter of law and history: The holiday is still Washington’s birthday. It is also a symptom of a veneration of the imperial presidency that is un-republican and would have horrified the Founding Fathers. Feel like you don’t belong? Crave emotional independence? Philip Teresi is joining in the worldwide events for World Radio Day. Philip tells us how he got into radio. Every February 13 we take a look on how radio is still changing lives across the globe. World Radio Day was first proposed by Spain in September 2010. During those long drives for vacation or maybe to work, the radio is still with us, keeping us singing and keeping us informed.
