He shares his counterintuitive approach to finding and empowering exceptional talent while leveraging AI as a tool that makes human uniqueness more valuable than ever.• Entrepreneurs are "broken people" who experience dopamine during pursuit rather than achievement of goals• Most business books treat employees as interchangeable commodities, leading to mediocre results• The Pareto principle shows that 20% of people produce 80% of results – fight this natural distribution at your peril• US employers struggle to hire top talent locally as they compete with tech giants and entrepreneurship• International hiring creates win-win situations where your US company becomes an aspirational employer• Pay 10% above the high watermark (not median) to access talent that performs 10-100x better• Use paid trial projects instead of resumes and interviews to identify exceptional candidates• AI replaces tasks rather than jobs, making mediocre employees dangerous while making exceptional ones more valuable• Delegate projects not tasks, and focus on outputs rather than time spent• Virtual work requires intentional connection through small teams, shared interests, and occasional in-person gatheringsStart building your dream team today by identifying what miracle workers you need and creating the conditions for them to thrive.Support the showThis episode is NOT sponsored. Adopting a dog, he discovered, forces you to “get OK with the voices in your head."“After the acquisition, that's all I do, I walk the dog,” Ben says. “And the dog was good therapy ... Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

When Lydia was gifted ten thousand dollars by anonymous donors, she spent little of it on herself. Instead she gave generous gifts to coworkers, family, flood victims, and charities. Lydia, unbeknownst to her, was part of a study following how two hundred people responded to a no-strings-attached gift of ten thousand dollars through wire transfer. That study found that more than two thirds of that gifted money was given away. Sharing this story, Chris Anderson, head of the TED organization, reflected, “It turns out that . . . we human beings are wired to respond to generosity with generosity.” In Scripture we find that when people live generously, they reflect the heart of the God who made them. God is generous, merciful, and kind, not just to some but to all—even “to the ungrateful and wicked” (Luke 6:35). So Jesus instructed those who desire to reflect God’s character to “love,” “do good to,” and “lend to” even enemies “without expecting to get anything back” (vv. 32-35). Yet when we give without expecting anything back, we’ll find that it’s never a way of life that harms us. Jesus pointed this out too, saying, “Give, and it will be given to you. . . . with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (v. 38). When we respond to God’s generosity by living generously, we find we’re enriched in countless ways.

Chris Anderson can't talk a lot about what he is up to these days. At least on camera. His LinkedIn profile says he's currently an Engineer at “Stealth". Prior to this current professional opacity, he was at Kitty Hawk, the electric aircraft maker founded by Sebastian Thrun (legendary Stanford Professor and former lead of Google's self-driving car team that led to Waymo) and backed by Google Co-founder, Larry Page. I became familiar with Chris while he was leading Wired Magazine as Editor-in-Chief. His work there was groundbreaking and set much of the pace, tone, and agenda for the early days of Web 2.0 and the Maker movement. After seeing a TedX talk about a side hustle he had selling cellophane bags of electrical parts and open source autopilots for DIY Drones I slid into his DM's.There is a lot of buzz around drones today, but note the date on that DM — November 3rd, 2010. Little did I know at the time, that this little drone business was just beginning to grow from Chris and his kids packing orders at their dinner table to a proper manufacturing and distribution center along the border of Mexico. As things happened, that DM turned into a conversation that turned into an investment in a company, 3D Robotics, that took Chris away from Wired and into the uncharted worlds of manufacturing, consumer hardware, and defense tech. He was early and 3DR didn't play out the way that we'd all hoped but it laid the foundations for much of what he's working on now — even though he can't talk much about that publicly. To say Chris has a knack for living in the future would be a massive understatement. In this conversation we unpack his process for exploring possible futures — spoiler: Chris has started writing science fiction as a way to explore complex technological implications. He writes a book a month, using fiction as a computational tool to play out scenarios with artificial agents and see where they lead. We get into what he got right and what he got wrong about drones specifically and defense tech more broadly. And we discuss the culture of Silicon Valley, where we spar a bit on the amount of waste and wandering built into the system that ultimately leads to so many unexpected breakthroughs. Since that first DM, he has become a dear friend, coconspirator, and sounding board for me. The unedited conversation here went on for nearly 3 hours (which reminds me that we really do need an “indie uncut” channel) but that's the kind of person Chris is — generous in sharing his time, ideas, and insights. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording this one.

Chances are, if you've been online at some point over the past decade, you've probably watched a TED Talk. You know the format—world-renowned speakers, experts and innovators on various topics take center stage to present one great idea in 18 minutes or fewer. TED Talks often challenge conventional thinking and offer new perspectives. They can be inspiring, thought-provoking, and even controversial—sometimes sparking spirited discussions and debates.  More than one billion TED Talks are viewed every year. And chances are, you know the name TED, in large part, because of a man named Chris Anderson. As the curator of TED, Chris helped transform TED from a small, annual conference in Monterey, California, into the global phenomenon it is today. His TED mantra—"ideas worth spreading"—continues to flourish around the globe. It's created a platform for people from all walks of life to gain access to new ideas and research on virtually any topic they find interesting, for free. Today, we're talking with Chris about generosity and his recent book, “Infectious Generosity: The Ultimate Idea Worth Spreading.” In it, he explores the power of human kindness and its potential to transform the world. He explains why simple acts of generosity can have a profound impact on individuals and communities, and how the spread of kindness can create a more connected, compassionate society. We do a deep dive on Dana Holgorsen from someone who covered him at West Virginia.

Impossible Tradeoffs with Katie Harbath

Twenty years ago, Wired editor Chris Anderson wrote “The Long Tail” - a story about how “the future of entertainment is in the millions of niche markets at the shallow end of the bitstream.” Also, twenty years ago, the term “podcasting” was coined thanks to the introduction of the iPod and RSS feeds that could carry audio files.Today, in these final days before the election, we can confidently say that this prediction has become a reality—not just for entertainment but also for news and politics.I've been pondering this newsletter for a while, and Chris's piece popped into my mind as I was thinking about how 2024 is being called the TikTok/Influencer/Podcast/Clipping/Shards of Glass election. What these all have in common is the theme that our information environment is more fractured than ever before, and influencers/creators across numerous platforms have proven their power to reach voters. I won't be shocked if, for the 2028 cycle, we have a candidate announce for president on a podcast (DeSantis did technically announce on Twitter spaces, but that's different.)Ben Thompson makes this point in his excellent column from Monday, “I think, though, that the ability to hold one's own on a podcast is, in the long run, going to be a greater selection effect for President than people might expect.”The ground is shifting beneath our feet and will continue to do so as we increasingly use artificial intelligence to help us create and curate the information we consume.I will have much more to say on this as I try to figure out how to recap these last two years. Since January 2020, I've been talking about this historic year of elections around the globe, and it is almost over. The amount we've all gone through during this time is massive—and it's only accelerating.Anchor Change with Katie Harbath is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. With only a week left until Election Day, I wanted to share five things to remember as we enter this new phase.* The information environment is shifting, which presents an excellent opportunity to shape this new reality. I've talked to a few folks wondering if their work since 2016 has been for naught because of the amount of disinformation online. It most certainly has not, but this work will need to change. I'm excited about digging into this new ecosystem and how we can mold how it evolves. What strikes me in re-reading Chris' article 20 years later is that we can predict where things will go; it just takes us a long time for the technology and people to adapt, to accept the new reality, and to grieve the loss of the old one. Where we are today will not be where we will be in four years, as AI will do much more to curate the information we consume. We know this will happen, just not exactly how. That presents a lot of opportunity to start helping shape the future we want. Just look at this paper about how AI is helping to prebunk election misinformation.* A side thing to watch here is where people go to follow along as results start to come in. Cable channels usually shine here, but Amazon is doing its own Election Night special, as are TikTok users like V Spehar from Under the Desk News. Will people go there instead?* The tech CEO election. A side story of this election will inevitably be the role of the tech CEO. From Zuckerberg trying to pull back on politics and news to Elon leaning in and Bezos killing the Washington Post editorial, these CEOs are now political players whether they want it or not. Podcasting and newsletter platforms - and thus their CEOs - will become more critical. These CEOs are not the enemy, nor will they save us, but we must work with them - and hold them accountable. We can lament that they operate first and foremost as a business, or we can accept that and figure out how to impact them through those incentives.* AI isn't as bad as feared, but this is just the start. I'm very nervous that people are going to take away from this election that AI isn't as bad as we thought and then drop the ball going into 2026 and 2028. We need to have less fear around AI overall, but this is only the beginning of its entry into our political sphere. Over the next four years, this is another area of great opportunity to shape what these guardrails should be for how campaigns use these tools to communicate with voters.* Panic responsibly. This is the time I created this phrase for. Anxiety, nerves, and tension are getting very high. It doesn't help when you feel like all you can do is sit and wait. Take care of yourself. Touch grass. Drink water. Just keep in mind that now is a nerve-wracking time, and that might impact how you are reacting to things. It will be okay. We will get through this. The merch store is here if you need a t-shirt, sticker, or wine glass to remind you of this.* Vote. The number one thing you need to do is vote. I don't care if it is absentee, early, or in-person. Visit turbovote.org for all the information you need on how to do this. I got my vote in via absentee. Ensure you are also up to speed on how votes are counted and certified, as there will likely be a lot of chaos and confusion around that. You can also watch this webinar I did this week with the Aspen Institute and other experts discussing the post-election time frame. I'm going into this final week nervous but excited. I'm anxious about what a tight election will do to us as a collective. I'm excited because I can already think of many projects I want to work on to shape this new information environment. There's a lot of opportunity in chaos if you know how to harness it. But we'll have time for that later. For now, vote, tell your friends and family to vote, and take care of yourselves. And for those working on elections, whether as an official, poll worker, tech employee, journalist, researcher, campaigner, or volunteer - don't forget, you got this.Side note: It's not good I'm making this a side note, but one of the things I feared would happen with the U.S. election is that it would suck all of the attention away from other global elections happening at the same time. Admittedly, I've fallen into that trap, but keep an eye on what is happening in Japan and the country of Georgia after their elections this past weekend. Both are seeing unrest and shock by results. There were also elections in Kiribati (an island in the South Pacific), Bulgaria and Uruguay (which is headed to a second round). Moldova's recent election on a referendum to join the EU was also a nail-biter. All of this is to say, while there's a lot happening here we also need to keep an eye on the globe as a whole. Please support the curation and analysis I'm doing with this newsletter. In January, I was announced as a 2024 TED speaker in Vancouver. Predictably, a small group of very loud people were angry—mostly on Twitter. Then, five TED fellows resigned. They wrote a letter to the head of TED, Chris Anderson, titled: “TED Fellows Refuse to Be Associated with Genocide Apologists.” They pleaded to disinvite me, plus a few others who had been asked to speak, and take us off the program. A strange thing considering that TED is devoted to curiosity, reason, wonder, and the pursuit of knowledge, without an agenda: “We welcome all who seek a deeper understanding of the world and connection with others, and we invite everyone to engage with ideas and activate them in your community.” In the end, TED didn't disinvite me. But I wondered if I should actually go. For some people, being invited to TED probably is the most exciting thing in the world. And at one point I would have felt that way too. But I knew they were inviting me to be their token dissident voice, to prove that they are not a monolith. And on the one hand, I appreciated that effort. On the other hand, if I'm your representation for ideological diversity, if I'm your most radical speaker, then you've already lost. In the end, I decided to speak. I felt like they were genuinely trying to right the ship, and shouldn't I support that effort? When I arrived, I was sequestered in a group with people like Bill Ackman, Avi Loeb, Andrew Yang, and Scott Galloway, and TED called our portion of the conference “The Provocateurs.” But as I looked around at my little group of five, something felt very obvious: none of us are all that provocative. Or at least we shouldn't be. The biggest irony of all is that that was the very topic of my speech I came to Vancouver to give. The talk is about how normal ideas and issues are often crowded out and overshadowed by boutique issues such as whether Bari Weiss should be allowed to speak at TED. It's about how a few small voices end up adjudicating which voices are morally righteous and which ones are not. It's about how common-sense positions became transgressive and polarizing overnight; how our ability to disagree is our freedom, and, most critically, why it's so important to stand with conviction in our beliefs even when it means standing out in the cold. Today, you'll hear my talk, titled “Courage, the Most Important Virtue.” Afterward, you'll hear a conversation I had with the head of TED, Chris Anderson, about victimhood, about how words are misinterpreted as violence, and about the paper-thin line between civilization and barbarism.
