Purdue wrestling head coach Tony Ersland and his staff kick off Season 4 of the Always Aggressive Podcast this week, recapping the summer, introducing some new Boilermakers and taking a look at the 2022-23 non-conference schedule. The Boilermakers spent a good chunk of the summer on campus, getting in some training cycles around the U20 and U23 U.S. World Team Trials, hosting camps and settling the team newcomers in West Lafayette. Five of the program's seven first years were able to start their college experience and get a feel for what the team culture is like. Announced a couple weeks ago, the Boilermakers 2022-23 non-conference schedule offers several opportunities to see Purdue compete at home, and introduced a few new tournaments to the schedule. Ersland is excited at the prospect of introducing his young team to the home fans and give them a chance to see the team a few times before heading out on to the road for conference action. Ersland and his staff also continue to prepare for on-campus recruiting season, set to welcome several of the nation's finest high school standouts for official visits this fall. Things get going next week in conjunction with Purdue Football's season opener against Penn State, set for 8 pm on Thursday, September 1 at Ross-Ade Stadium.

Happy St. Patty's Day! Todd O'Wolverton and Jon O'Johnston begin this episode of the Five Heart Podcast with a few moments of somber recognition for Iowa, who lost in the first round of the NCAA Basketball tournament. Jon had picked them in two brackets to go to the championship game. He takes credit for destroying them by rooting for them, damn the brackets. We discuss the gloriousness of March Madness, then Todd gives us a rundown of what's happening at the NCAA Wrestling tournament. Nebraska is in #6 place, with four wrestlers advancing past the first day of action. We spend some time discussing Nebraska baseball, as Todd has already been to several games. We talk to about what's going on with this team and their lack of consistency. Greg joins late and everything goes to hell, as he's triggered by the return of Tom Brady, which leads us into a discussion of NFL quarterbacks and who might be the greatest of all time. Oh yeah, there's spring football. And a change to the Nebraska men's basketball coaching staff. Things devolve even further as the two elders give Greg parenting advice. Jon is bothered by the lack of success shown by the guy trying to counsel people not to be their parents in the Progressive Insurance commercials. That guy must suck! Greg decides it would be a good idea that for the rest of the offseason we do segments on parenting advice. Or life advice. And Todd can give dating tips because Todd is good at that sort of thing. SO IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ON PARENTING OR WANT DATING TIPS FROM TODD, WE NEED YOUR QUESTIONS DAMMIT. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Does Iowa have a shot at the national title? Which Hawkeyes can be expected to wrestle above their seeds? The Gazette's K.J. Penn State wrestling steps back under the spotlight this week to pursue their ultimate goal, an NCAA championship. Greg Pickel of Blue White Illustrated joins host Thomas Frank Carr to preview the tournament to get you ready for the four-day event. They start, however, with a quick recap of the Big Ten tournament since it had a significant impact on the Nittany Lions' seeding at nationals. Drew Hilderbrant had an upset loss and found himself much lower in the seeding for the tournament than expected. So what happened? Pickel gives a recap and then explains what happened in the seeding process. Pickel then gets into head coach Cael Sanderson's comments about the inconsistent seeding system and the Nittany Lions' problems with it. Next, Pickel details these affected wrestlers and their road to contention at the weight class. From there, Pickel goes through the rest of Penn State's nine wrestlers that qualified for the tournament and gives his thoughts about the most significant matches or possible draws on their potential schedule. Finally, T-Frank asks him to clarify if seeding issues that Sanderson expressed changed the outlook of Penn State contending for a national championship. He also asks what teams are in contention to upset the Nittany Lions in Detroit. Finally, Pickel gives his thought and stays firm in his prior beliefs about the Penn State wrestling team. From there, they switch gears and look at Penn State spring football, which is only a week away. Greg gives his thirty-thousand-foot view of the situation and tells T-Frank what he wants to know and what he wants to see next week. Next, T-Frank and Pickel discuss the running back and tight end rooms. Pickel is especially interested in how the tight ends perform this spring. Will one player take the spotlight? Or will all three fulfill the promise that they didn't match last season? Pickel is also curious to learn about redshirt freshman Khalil Dinkins. What role could he play next season? They discuss the offense's crispness to start the season and then focus on several key positions on the defensive side of the ball.
