Kelso's perspective offers a unique look at the intersection of close air support and SEAD, highlighting the courage and coordination required in every mission.Stay tuned and subscribe for more frontline stories and tactical lessons from the world of combat aviation and special operations.
After more than 3 years of war in Ukraine, the Russian military is not a spent force: indeed, the combination of more flying hours for more aircrew, 3 years of combat experience in CAS, AI, CAP, Strike and ISR missions, a war economy supporting new airframes and weapons, and low pilot attrition rates has made the Russian Air Force capable of what it was supposed to do in 2022 – and then some. It now has the ability to outmatch European NATO states in capability, experience and fighting power for the next decade. Professor Justin Bronk, Senior Research Fellow for Air Power at RUSI in London, explains why a wholesale shift to drones isn't going to be the ubiquitous answer that the speeches from military and political leaders make out. As the IAMD system in NATO states matures (albeit at differing speeds), the Russian system is also a major factor in air power planning for the future. The impact on how NATO wants to fight, and how it will have to fight, is stark. And it's not going to be good enough to continue copying the US model: for the USAF and USN, the Pacific is requiring a drive towards a different force design, way of operating, C2, and basing options from those that would work for NATO in Europe. Context matters.
This podcast takes you all around the world – to Gulfstream for wins by Rafael Hernandez, Marty Drexler and Micah Husbands. Then to Dubai for the $12 million Dubai World Cup, the UAE Derby, and a surprising appearance in the $2 million Golden Shaheen by jockey Chantal Sutherland. Also, Kentucky Derby Preps from Aqueduct and Santa Anita and correspondent Ric Chapman tells us how Moira did in a $4 million race down under. The Sovereign Awards are less than 3 weeks away, so we have trainer Bob Tiller musing about Patches O'Houlihan, a lock for the Male Sprinter Trophy, but does he have a shot to be Horse of the Year? James MacDonald did it again – he won 5 on the same night at Mohawk. Jessica Hallett describes the t-shirt she made, with all the proceeds going to the family of Hunter Myers. Horse owner John Bianco pulled off one of the great claims in recent years and he talks about Air Combat and a few other good ones. And huge bombs, one at Aqueduct to kick off the baseball season and another at Mohawk that came close to causing a Longshot Panic.

It is the height of the cold war and the Soviets have developed a fighter that defies radar detection and responds to its pilots thoughts! Naturally, the best man for the job of stealing this lethal next-gen weapon is a burned-out Vietnam war veteran who is prone to debilitating flashbacks! This week Paul, Javi, and - naturally - Producer Brad take the wayback machine to June 18, 1982, a simpler time when we as a nation knew who the bad guys were, we know where they were, and only Clint Eastwood could get in there to steal their most valuable weapon.
The team discusses the upcoming Gambler's campaign from Baltic Dragon and John "Rain" Waters. Plenty of miniature games for air combat exist--Check Your Six and Wings of Glory are played in our club--but they do have their limitations. Something both of those rule sets share in common (along with most others) is that they are dogfighting games. As a player, you control a plane. Maybe two or three at most. You're in the cockpit trying to out-turn, out-dive, and out-maneuver your opponents in the sky. Today, we're joined by Mark and Carl of Mark's Game Room to talk about a new air combat miniature game with a very different spin. Their new game, Fire in the Sky, doesn't have a few planes zipping around--it features dozens of fighters flying as entire squadrons. This is a much higher level scope than your typical miniature game. Greg sits down with Mark and Carl to discuss air combat on the tabletop and some of the innate challenges of gaming dynamic dogfights in miniature. We hope you enjoy the discussion about all things air combat! There's even a bit of chatter about the new Masters of the Air series on Apple Plus. What do each of these guys think of the series? Stick around and find out.
The Great War. The War to End All Wars. The scope of the First World War was so large it was almost unbelievable to think any conflict could surpass the destruction it wrought not just upon Europe, but many other countries as well. The Great War was the first time classic war strategy met advancements in technology designed to inflict maximum casualties. Basically fighting like you would when the enemy had muskets when they now had machine guns. It was where trench warfare become infamous with the horrors that occurred in No Man's Land. Entire landscapes destroyed by the thousands of artillery shells fired. Empires that stood for centuries were ended by the war. Air Combat saw its birth here, tank warfare had its introduction. It was truly a conflict that shaped our future but unfortunately did not teach us any lessons except how to kill each other more effectively.
The Indian Air Force is preparing for a significant upgrade with the upcoming test of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)'s Astra Mark 2 air-to-air missile. This missile, capable of hitting targets up to 130 km away, is a game-changer for India's air combat capabilities. The DRDO has been developing these missiles since 2001 to engage distant targets effectively. In this episode, Dev Goswami and defence expert Shiv Aroor discuss the importance of long-range missiles like Astra Mark 2 for modern air battles and why India needs them. They also reflect on the post-Balakot skirmish, which took place on 27 February 2019. India faced challenges in maintaining its position despite the Pakistan Air Force's (PAF) anticipated retaliation after the Balakot airstrike. The podcast analyses the dynamics of the skirmish and identifies the reasons that pinned India down. This and more in In Our Defence!Listen in!Produced by Anna PriyadarshiniSound mix by Sachin Dwivedi

Episode Summary: In Episode 156 of the Aerospace Advantage, 4th Gen to 5th Gen Air Combat Evolution: Operator Perspectives, Mitchell Institute's John “Slick” Baum chats with two seasoned fighter pilots, Lt Col Gary Glojek and Lt Col Max Cover, about how modernization is impacting today's Air Force flightlines. Specifically, they discuss how the combat Air Force inventory is evolving from a 4th generation force to one increasingly populated by 5th generation aircraft. Types like the A-10, which have been in the Air Force inventory since the 1970s, are sunsetting. Others, like the F-16 will stay in the inventory for several more years, but in reduced quantities as F-35 numbers increase. Add this to the combination of F-22, F-35, B-2, and B-21, plus NGAD, and the Air Force is looking at a fundamentally reshaped combat inventory. This has major operational, tactical, and technological implications for how these forces train and execute missions. Given Cover's time in the F-16 and F-35, plus Glojek's time in the A-10, these two airmen are uniquely qualified to discuss this operational evolution. Episode Summary: In Episode 119 of the Aerospace Advantage, Air Combat Survivability Imperative: Through a POW's Experience, John “Slick” Baum, Maj Gen Larry “Stutz” Stutzriem, USAF (Ret.), and Heather “Lucky” Penney interview Lt Col Gene Smith, USAF (Ret.) about what it was like to get shot down in his F-105 over downtown Hanoi on October 25, 1967. This was just one of the 1,737 USAF aircraft lost to hostile action over Vietnam. That number equates to roughly 80% of the Air Force's fighter inventory today. Members of the Mitchell team also discuss steps the Air Force should consider as it prepares for an increasingly hostile future threat environment and speak to a museum leader who is helping educate future generations about this history. As Smith's story reminds us, effective airpower demands that aircrew fly into harm's way, execute their missions, and return to base—and then do it all over again to sustain broader air campaign objectives. If attrition grows too high, then sorties cannot be sustained. These sorts of casualty rates are hard to imagine today given that we've become used to combat operations in relatively low threat conditions. Tomorrow's conflicts promise to be far more lethal.
