Well, hello there! Hope you are doing well, growing in grace, enjoying the Lord's love, spending time with Him daily, and living a Kingdom focused life. I'm thankful you're listening today. This is episode number 207 of The Burt (Not Ernie) Show, featured on the Edifi app, iHeart radio, Spotify, Apple podcasts, and pretty much all the places. Let's jump into today's episode. The Power of God's Will - 40 Days of God's Promises Devotional now available on Audible If you were, say, looking at the last week of Jesus' life, those days leading up to the crucifixion - if you were looking from the outside, those events leading would leave you with an entirely different impression than they do for us who know Jesus, who love Him and live for Him. In Him we live and move and have our being, it says in Acts 17:28. When you know that for yourself in a personal way, you look at the events between Palm Sunday and Resurrection Sunday with thankfulness, gratitude, humility, awe, and hope for what comes next. When you look at it from the outside in, it probably doesn't create those same emotions. It looks like a series of terribly unfortunate events from that perspective. Jesus' arrest, trial, crucifixion - those are gut wrenching moments in history and may be incredibly difficult to make sense out of for someone looking at the life of Jesus for the first time.    The week seems like it ended in utter hopelessness, like those three and a half years of the Lord's life were all for naught. And that would be discouraging, if you only saw it from that perspective, from the outside looking in.    But when you are in Christ, you look at things from a heavenly perspective. You are seated with Him in the heavenly places, is says in Ephesians 2:6, and that means we don't see things from the world's point of view. We see everything in a different light, and not like the old Bangles song from the ‘80s (yes, I am Gen X and yes, the 1980's produced a vast volume of songs, enough that there are references available for almost everything…and I wish the word of God was as easy to memorize as all those song lyrics from my teenage years were).    When we only see something in part, only have access or clarity on bits and pieces of a situation, it can easily feel pretty discouraging. Let me reiterate that: when we only see in part, we can easily become discouraged.   It makes sense that the last week of Jesus' life could be discouraging to someone looking at the life of Jesus from the outside. But doesn't it also make sense that you and I can also become discouraged about the things we can only see in part? And since we are not yet with the Lord, we do see in part. We don't have the whole picture. But what we do have is actually far better; we have Jesus Himself, we have the Holy Spirit indwelling us, we have the promise of heaven with Him, we are forgiven, we have access to the Father via prayer directly, at any time, because the veil was torn at Jesus death and thanks to His resurrection, death and hell are defeated for us.    I say all that to remind you that when you start feeling discouraged about something, I hope you can pause and remember that just because you can't see it all with total clarity, that does not mean things are hopeless. Sunday is coming, and for the Christian, Sunday always, always comes, into every scenario and situation and problem and pitfall. Always.    How can I say that and be so certain that it is true, no matter what is happening in your life? Because when you know Jesus, when your name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life, in the end you get eternity with Him. And that is, for you, the joy of Resurrection morning, the empty tomb, the defeat of death for you, and eternal hope.    We who know the Lord understand that Jesus accomplished the Father's will, and we know absolutely that the tomb is empty, there is no body of Jesus entombed in Israel. No grave holds Him. That tomb? It was empty 2000 years ago, it's empty right now, and it will remain empty for time and all eternity. The deed is done. The goose is cooked. Satan truly is a defeated foe, as Revelation chapter 20 so powerfully and beautifully teaches.   The seeming series of unfortunate events was in actuality a series of events leading to the greatest moment to ever occur. There's nothing else like it!    You and I know this to be true.  So, can we also trust that God is doing His will - His good and perfect and pleasing will - on behalf of His dearly loved children, even in the areas of our lives that are painful?    It takes some guts, some faith, and often some honest prayer sessions with the Lord to really believe this with every fiber of our being. And if you need to wrestle with God on a topic that's especially raw and real, please do that. Wrestle in prayer with Him. Ask Him those hard questions. Cry if you need to. But don't just cry to your small group, to your friends, to your spouse. Cry out to your ABBA Father, and be still before Him long enough to experience the love and encouragement and peace that He wants to give you right in the midst of your mess.  You are not alone. He has promised never to leave you or forsake you. So please don't live like you're alone, like you've been forsaken. God is not a liar. Do not allow your stress to lead you to a place where your faith is so nonexistent, your trust so shrunken, that you are basically accusing God of being a liar to you. Remember, it is impossible fo rGod to lie, it says that in Hebrews chapter 6, verse 18. Never live in a way that accuses God of something that it is impossible for Him to do. He has not and He will not and He is not in this moment right now today lying to you. He can't and He won't. Please do not forget that!    Let's look at Mark, chapter 4. Verses 24 and 25. I'm going to read from the New Living Translation.    Then He added, “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given - and you will receive even more. To those who listen to My teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.”  How are you at listening? It's not easy to be a good listener in our always on our phones day and age. It takes a whole lot more effort than it used to. But it's important to train yourself to be a good listener. In say your marriage, your parenting, at work, and all the more so when it comes to what Jesus has said via the Bible.   Are you paying close attention to what He has said? Are you listening closely, so that you can understand and then be given even more? Are you listening to His teaching? Not just during a sermon once a week, but really listening when you open your Bible and read it for yourself? And are you doing that daily? If not, can you start reading your Bible every day? Not to be a legalist, because that is a dead-end road. But because you want to do what Jesus said to do here in Mark chapter 4 - reading your Bible because you want to pay close attention, to listen to Him closely, and to be given more understanding.   The inverse is that what little understanding you have will be taken away from you if you don't pay close attention. That's not a good thing. And so, let's just not do things that way.    As we think about Resurrection Sunday, we almost certainly think about the fact that Jesus finished His work on the cross. It is a finished work. Nothing more needs to be done or added to it. It is finished, that's what He said from the cross, and He meant what He said and said what He meant. Remember, Mark 4? We are paying close attention to what He tells us.  And so, we believe that it is finished, His work on the cross. And since we believe that, we also live without trying to add to the already finished work. The work we have to do is the work of believing according to John 6:29.    We can, and really I feel like we must, we must trust the Lord who paid it all to give us eternal life is the same Lord who is at work in our lives right here and now, today, completing the good work He began in us. Philippians 1:6 tells us to be confident that He will complete the good work He started in us. He is a finisher, our God is. Jesus finished it all on the cross and that sure doesn't indicate that He'll leave you flapping out in the wind, unfinished. He is the Author and Finisher of our faith, it says in Hebrews 12:2. The Author, so He started it and He is also continuing to write it out for us, day by day, and He will finish it. Anything Jesus finishes is done to perfection. That's how you need to look at your faith. Jesus authored it, He is still authoring it every single moment of every single day, and He will finish it to perfection. How do we know this is true? Because of the cross; His finished work on the cross proves that Jesus finishes everything He sets His hand to with perfection. Always. Every single time.   He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. Your life and times are in His hands. Those are good, good hands to be in. Jesus isn't Allstate, He doesn't raise your rates when you make a claim. You are rooted and established in Him. He's got you, and if you don't feel like you can see the end of this ordeal right now, just remember that He's got you. He has engraved you on the palms of His hands, and it is impossible for Him to forget you. See Isaiah 49:16.   This Resurrection Sunday, I hope you rejoice and declare with total trust in Him that He is risen! He is risen, indeed!    Lord bless you today, and every day! Daily Dose of Hope April 9, 2025 Day 3 of Week 2   Scripture – Mark 4:35-41   Prayer:  Heavenly Father, we give you today.  We start off by just acknowledging that you are God – all-powerful, mighty, all-knowing, and full of mercy and grace.  We are insignificant and yet you love us.  You want to hear from us.  Sometimes, it's hard for me to wrap my head around that.  But thank you, Lord.  I pray that we can focus on you right now.  Help us gather our very scattered and distracted thoughts and focus on you...Speak to us, Lord, and meet us right here, right now.  We love you.  Amen.   Welcome back, friends, to the Daily Dose of Hope, a Deep Dive into the Gospels and Acts.  We are finishing up Mark 4 today and this is some of my favorite Scripture.  We see that Jesus' authority even extends over nature and this amazes his disciples.  They have to face the big question that we also have to face – who is this man?   In today's Scripture, we find ourselves on the lake with Jesus. Typically, we refer to it as the Sea of Galilee.  When it's calm, it's absolutely beautiful. But this body of water, also called Lake Kinneret, is a large, shallow body of water. As such, it is prone to sudden violent storms when wind hits it−storms that die down equally quickly when the wind stops.   This is still early in Jesus' ministry but he has started healing. In fact, he is known for his healings.  Because of that, large crowds have become to follow him. There are those who are desperate and there are those who are curious, but the sheer number of people following Jesus and crowding up against him has become cumbersome.  Thus, Jesus begins to teach from a boat, with the people standing on the shore. And what has Jesus been teaching them? He's using parables to teach them about the Kingdom of God (we talked about this yesterday).   Then, our Scripture says that when evening came, he says to his disciples, “Let's go to the other side of the lake.” Why doesn't Jesus wait until morning? Why a night-time crossing? Obviously, there is something important, something pressing that needs to happen.    I want us to notice something here – this is no small thing to cross to the other side of the lake. Crossing the Sea of Galilee means crossing into Gentile territory, where he will be encountered by a demon-possessed man in a graveyard. Jesus is crossing boundaries here. I think this often gets lost in 21st century Bible reading, but Jesus is all about crossing boundaries. He crosses social and spiritual boundaries. He eats with unacceptable people, he touches people who are considered unclean, he breaks the Sabbath law, he communicates with evil, unclean spirits. Getting in the boat with Jesus, crossing to the other side of the lake, can be a risky, unpredictable experience.   The Scripture says that Jesus and the disciples leave the crowds behind to go on this nighttime boat ride across the lake. Interestingly, it says that other boats were with them. Jesus just could not get away from the crowds; they are following him on the lake too. But that means they get to be a part of what he is about to do. So, Mark writes that a powerful squall, a huge storm, comes upon them suddenly. Waves were breaking over the sides of the boat and they were taking on a lot of water. The disciples are panicked, which is saying a lot because many of these guys are professional fishermen and they know the sea.  While they panic, what's Jesus doing? He's asleep on a pillow. Thus, they frantically wake Jesus up and say, “Teacher, don't you care if we drown?”   How often have you asked this question – Jesus, don't you care? This is our ultimate cry to God, isn't it? It's a cry of fear, doubt, abandonment, rejection---we hear this cry repeated in the stories of God's people over and over again. As a pastor, I hear it repeated in this community, in this church, in your own lives. Where is God? Where is Jesus as I deal with cancer? Where is God as I deal with grief or depression or loneliness? Where is God as our world seems to be imploding?  Jesus, don't you care? Where are you as I struggle?   And Jesus wakes up, he doesn't get upset with them or apologize for sleeping, no small talk – he rebukes the wind and says “Quiet, be still!” He uses the same words here in ancient Greek that are used for rebuking evil spirits. It seems that Jesus has the power to rebuke all kinds of things. What is amazing to me here is that Jesus speaks and there is immediate calm. We see this throughout the book of Mark - Jesus speaks or touches and the things that bring destruction, the things that cause suffering, immediately cease. They immediately cease so that they no longer have the power to cause suffering. Evil spirits, bleeding, illnesses, even death---all with a word or a touch, Jesus stops them. He brings immediate calm.    Then Jesus asks them “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”  Another translation says, “Guys, why are you such cowards?”  I mean, these guys have seen what he can do; they have seen his power.  I can't help but think he asks that of us as well: “You have seen what I can do, as I've shown up over and over again in your life. Yet, you still have no faith? I mean, I'm right here in the boat with you. I'm not somewhere far off. I'm here, in the boat.”   Let's read verse 41 again.  They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”   And that is the big question, isn't it?  Who is Jesus?    Who is Jesus to you?  To me, he is God.  He is Savior.  He is Lord of all.  But that means nothing in your life.  Who is Jesus to you???  Answer out loud.  Wrestle with this if you need to, but don't just let this question with no response.  There is no more important question.    Let's close today with Colossians 1:15-20, The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.   Blessings, Pastor Vicki

Pastor Sam Rainer preaches verse-by-verse through the book of Habakkuk, one of the minor prophets in the Old Testament. It's a unique book that provides us with a prophet's personal experience as he dialogues with God. Habakkuk complains to God as Judah falls apart and Jewish leaders fall into corruption. We see his inner struggles, fears, and doubts. Wrestle with God faithfully by talking to Him, not about Him. We may not always understand God, but we can always trust Him.

Roxie awakened in the very early morning hours and was having a "dark night of the soul." Roxie's depth of vulnerability about her personal struggle with the demands of an authentic Christian life was untouched before Roxie pushed "publish." The video has over 30K views.  There is no mistaking that Roxie knows suffering. In this Lenten podcast, Roxie revisits where she was at a year ago when she filmed this video. She then takes a deep dive into what she has learned from God ever since. We can't be lukewarm in our Catholic faith--we must make a complete surrender and be "all in." Empathy and compassion should be the foundation of faith, right? So why are they suddenly treated like liabilities? In this episode, I break down the growing fear around "toxic empathy" and ask the bigger questions: Why are so many people—especially in religious spaces—acting like caring too much is dangerous? Why does faith seem to be turning into a fortress instead of a bridge? And if following Jesus is supposed to make us more compassionate, more willing to see the humanity in others, why is so much of modern faith rooted in fear and control instead? We'll dive into the parable of the Good Samaritan, unpack why Jesus made the most hated person the hero of the story, and ask—if he told this parable today, who would be the Samaritan? Immigrants? The LGBTQIA+ community? People from different faiths? And most importantly, if your faith is making you less willing to love, less willing to connect, and more focused on protecting yourself from the ‘wrong people'—then is it even faith at all? Buckle up for a deep, unfiltered conversation on what it really means to love your neighbor. If you've ever wrestled with questions about faith, about empathy, about what it really means to follow Jesus—I see you. These conversations aren't always easy, but they matter. And if this episode made you think, challenged you, or maybe even unsettled you a bit, I encourage you to sit with that. Wrestle with it. Ask yourself, Who is the Samaritan today? And what does that mean for me?
