POPULARITY
As promised, returning to Fika with Vicky this week is Mitch Markowitz. So if we didn't get to your question or comment during his last busy visit, here's your chance. Mitch was Co-Producer for The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, a popular Canadian Children's Television series. It premiered September 4th, 1971 and still runs on various markets today…over 50 years later! However, The Hilarious House of Frightenstein didn't just appeal to children. Also syndicated in markets across the USA, the age of its audience grew along with its size, and it found a home in college dormitories and anywhere people enjoyed laughter, old monster movies, and a bit of randomness. Along with appearances made by Vincent Price, multiple characters being played by Billy Van, Fishka Rais, Guy Big, and Julius Summer Miller, Mitch would fly by as Super Hippy. Join us as we discuss The Hilarious House of Frightenstein and beyond. What was, what is, and what is to come. You can follow Mitch on X @IMTVSSUPERHIPPY Joining me as co-host this week is Dave Bennison. Aside from being a Hilarious House of Frightenstein aficionado and good friend of Mr. Markowitz, Dave is the solo force behind Historical Niagara, former radio host of The Long Story Short Show, co-owner of Stick to the Story & a man of many hats and characters.. I think I was about 35 before I figured out that Billy Van played all those crazy characters on The Hilarious House of Frightenstein. The series, consisting of 130 episodes cranked out over nine months, premiered more than 50 years ago in 1971. It is one of the most eccentric and enduring, locally-produced, TV shows ever made in Canada. It broke so many rules in childrens television that you'd have to cut it down to about four minutes to get it on a broadcast network today. (Edited versions still play on Crave, Tubi and YouTube.)My guest on this podcast is Mitch Markowitz whose older brother Riff Markowitz took the idea of a horror-spoof kiddie show to Hamilton's CHCH. Mitch helped produce but also, at his brother's urging, appeared on-camera in short segments as "Super Hippy." Vincent Price was flown up from Hollywood to shoot 400 introductory segments which helped the Markowitz's syndicate the series stateside. Jumbo-sized Fishka Rais played Igor, assistant to The Count, Billy Van. Van, later a key comedy player on Sony & Cher, also played Griselda the Ghastly Gourmet, The Librarian, Bwana Clyde Batty, The Oracle, The Maharishi and the Wolfman -- the latter a werewolf disc jockey. Van wasn't supposed to play any of them, but, as Markowitz relates, he stepped in when a Plan-A that would never fly today didn't pan out. Van's tour-de-force was an inspiration to Mike Myers, Jim Carrey and other Canadians who grew up with the series before hitting it big in Hollywood. Markowitz shares those stories and talks about the recent animated spinoff in a Halloween party episode even "Brucie" -- a copyright-infringing monster The Count was always trying to revive -- would enjoy.

In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: "Good Morning, Vietnam", which is a 1987 American war comedy-drama film written by Mitch Markowitz and directed by Barry Levinson. Set in Saigon in 1965, during the Vietnam War, the film stars Robert Williams as Airman Second Class Adrian Cronauer, a radio DJ for the Armed Forces Radio Service, who arrives in Vietnam to host a radio show, whose irreverent humour, his playing of rock and roll music, and his reading of censored news makes him hugely popular with the troops but an annoyance to his immediate superiors Lt. Steven Hauk (played by Bruno Kirby) and Sgt. Major Dickerson (played by J.T. Walsh). Loosely based upon the experiences of real life AFRS radio DJ Adrian Cronauer, the film conveys a rollercoaster of emotions for the main character, Adrian Cronauer, as he struggles to balance doing wants he wants to do - to give his fellow troops on the front line of the Vietnam War some entertainment and light relief - with the harsh reality of seeing war up close up and being drawn into personal relationships with those on both sides of the war. The film also stars Forest Whitaker as Private Edward Garlick, Robert Wuhl as Marty Lee Dreiwitz, Noble Willingham as Gen. Taylor, Chintara Sukapatana as Trinh, as well as other great actors and real people who give wonderful, believeable, and emotional performances. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

In 1971, Mitch Markowitz and his brother Rafael “Riff” Markowitz started filming their new children’s cult classic comedy horror sketch program The Hilarious House of Frightenstein! Back then, they had no idea just how popular it would become in Canada, the US and across the world. The Hilarious House of Frightenstein was a Canadian children’s television series … Continue reading "Mitch Markowitz: Hilarious House of Frightenstein"
Mitch Markowitz, the associate producer, head writer and one of the stars (Super Hippy, The Mosquito) of The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, is the special guest on this episode of the Really Awful Movies Podcast. A quirky sketch comedy for kids, all 130 episodes were made in a nine-month span starting in 1971. The show was done in Hamilton, Ontario (think Pittsburgh, but less glamorous) and for reasons that will become clearer, became an unlikely, long-running, multi-generational global hit. Horror icon Vincent Price starred in introductions for the show's various segments. The legend had always wanted to work on a project for kids [interested listeners can check out our interview with Victoria Price, Vincent's daughter] The legendarily prolific hard-working Price, filmed all of his nearly 400 segments in four days for a fee of $13,000 and did it all in one summer to boot. On Canadian TV stations, the show generally aired as a children's show in an after-school or weekend morning time slot. In the United States, however, many stations aired it in a late night slot aimed primarily at college students. That's not an indictment of our respective educational systems! Growing up in Toronto, the authors of this site couldn't help but be intrigued by the weirdness, the audacity, and the transgressive nature of this little show. On this episode of the Really Awful Movies Podcast: Markowitz discusses the origins of The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, Markowitz also discusses Vincent Price's humility and kindness on the set, and "writing scary" for Mr. Price, The inspiration for Austin Powers' Mini Me character how Markowitz enlisted the help of Ryerson University students to write the show, and penning sight gags for kids.
New Episodes January 14th! ICYMI: The Edge from U2 dropped by the G&B studios. We accused him of spamming iTunes users. And he had something interesting to say about people who don’t like the band. In 2014 Mitch Markowitz of the Hilarious House of Frightenstein told us why he still goes to comic book conventions. And we’ll play the top 25 songs of the last year — all in four minutes flat. The post The Edge of the Holidays appeared first on The Geeks and Beats Podcast with Alan Cross and Michael Hainsworth.
