Tread Perilously's month of TV shows based on feature films continues with an episode of Alien Nation called "Fifteen With Wanda." When a Newcomer limo driver is witness to a crime on his wedding night, he enters witness protection with Sikes and Francisco as his detail. Unfortunately, the Newcomer took an aphrodisiac as part of the wedding/bonding tradition and must spend the next three weeks wanting nothing more than the 15 minutes with his bride to complete the mating ceremony. And with his day in court soon approaching, he is targeted for extermination. Meanwhile, Francisco's son gets involved with Lori Petty. Justin recalls the reason why he never watched Alien Nation despite being a big fan of the movie. Memories of the Fox network in the 1990s are examined, including The X-Files and M.A.N.T.I.S. The pair also recall what genre movies and TV were like before it all got Whedon-ized. Star Gary Graham proves to be the weakest link in moving Alien Nation to television. Co-star Eric Pierpoint proves more successful as TV's Mandy Patankin. The power of 1990s Lori Petty cannot be denied. Geography Corner leads to Southern California colleges. Justin learns a key detail about Newcomer physiology. Erik and Justin pitch a modern version of Alien Nation and discover the old Dr. Spock joke now requires a ton of context.

The 1990s! A time when Hollywood's brightest minds were trying to solve the impossible problem of how to make a whole movie from those comic book thingies. Nowadays, they're trying to work out how to stop doing that, but that hasn't decreased the charm of things like Rachel Talalay's Tank Girl, a post-apocalyptic slice of pop feminism in which Lori Petty's titular antihero fights a scenery-chewing Malcolm McDowell while also - and there is no polite way to say this - getting it on with mutant kangaroos. One of whom is Ice-T. It's fair to assume you won't be seeing this in Phase Whatever of Marvel, but plenty of people have sought it out since its legendarily unsuccessful initial release. On this episode, we're joined again by comics expert Andrew from Behold! podcast in order to properly assess the film's position in comic-movie history, talk about its quintessentially '90s soundtrack and tease out its connections to alt-rock icons like R.E.M., Devo and Bjork. In 1943, Philip K. Wrigley (of chewing gum fame!) founded the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) in order to maintain sport and public morale during World War II, at a time when many eligible young men, including professional sportsmen, were drafted to fight overseas.Whilst A League of Their Own is a mostly fictional account of the players and founders behind the AAGPBL, it still tells a story of the real-life resilience, spirit and tenacity of the young women involved, many of whom had husbands fighting in the war, coming together to provide entertainment and boost the morale of the nation through sport, despite the sexism and misogyny of the era.Penny Marshall's 1992 movie remains my favourite, and dare I say it, the greatest sports movie of all time. A story of determination, sisterly love, sacrifice and friendship within the very real backdrop of World War II, when women could finally prove they were more than just potential housewives and mothers.Geena Davis embodies the 40s starlet as the statuesque, seemingly perfect Dottie Hinson. Tom Hanks, playing against type as alcoholic ex-player-turned-manager Jimmy Dugan delivers most of the movie's iconic lines. Lori Petty as Kit Keller, just wants to step out of her older sister's perfect shadow and Madonna, in probably one of her most beloved screen roles, as "All The Way" Mae Mordabito, with a great on-screen comedic partnership with Rosie O'Donnell's brash Doris Murphy.Even though the real AAGPBL was dismantled in 1954, its legacy lives on in this movie. It encapsulates a time in recent history that not many are still alive to tell the story of. Sadly, Mary Pratt, the last remaining member of that inaugural 1943 Rockford Peaches roster, passed away just before this episode was (originally) released. She lived to 101 and spent her life championing women's sport. These women were inspirational, trail-blazing, legacy-creating and really were in a league of their own.Episode originally released 14th May 2020Mentioned in this episode:From the ArchiveThere's no new episode this week, so I thought you might be interested in revisiting this slightly older, but no less brilliant episode. Episode 261 features Bill Mikita, Hollywood writer and film producer and Mike McCloud, creator of the World Food Championships. Bill Mikita is the writer and producer of the movie, Chasing 3000.  The movie is based on the true story of Bill and his brother's cross country trip to see Roberto Clemente get his 3,000th base hit.  The story of how this career lawyer became a Hollywood writer and film producer and was able to get Ray Liotta, among other celebrities to star in the movie is fascinating.  Some of those other celebrities include, Lauren Holly, M. Emmet Walsh, Lori Petty, Keith David, Trevor Morgan, Rory Culkin, Tania Raymonde, Seymour Cassel, and Willa Holland.  Bill gives us an inside look at the making of the film which, in its final form seemed improbable, but Bill persevered and the result is a wonderful movie.  Bill discusses his next project which is based on an amazing baseball game between two unbelievable teams and is a story you will not want to miss. Mike McCloud is focused on making Food Sport a long-term, fun-filled legacy for the culinary industry.  As the creator of the World Food Championships he appears to be on his way to doing that.  The first WFC competition was in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2012 where almost 300 culinary champions gathered to compete.  The event was filmed in 2013 for a reality show that aired 2014 on A&E's FYI Channel. WFC's 2014 competition grew 35% and culminated in the first $100,000 grand prize. In early 2016, WFC debuted its second television show on the Discovery Network and is now syndicated in 10 countries.  Fast forward to 2022 when the WFC celebrated its 10th anniversary and the brand achieved a record-setting media reach of more than 6 billion and the WFC's appeal continues to grow.   We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. Will Willy be able to jump the jetty and make it back to his family in time? Did this movie actually shoot a giant mechanical whale over a child actor to get their money shot!? What was one significant inspiring piece of pop-culture that a massive influence over your creative endeavours? All of us have had many, many different influences over the years but that's certainly NOT what we're interested in here, what we're talking about is that one thing you can remember that had a huge effect on you, why, how, and when. For me, I picked the time I saw the Tank Girl movie. It was all the way back in the mid 1990s. The movie didn't have much promotion so I didn't see it in the cinema because I didn't even know it was being screened, I only remember some radio ads. It came out on video very quickly and that's how I saw it. I rented it out and I actually own that very video cassette now because I bought it when the shop went out of business years later. An Ex stole my DVD and I can't buy a digital copy online here But I digress… When I saw that movie it was the perfect critical mass of creative influence for me. The story wasn't very good and it bore little relation to the comic but it was full of so much 1990s alt culture that it's a perfect time capsule and exemplar of the period; From the post-punk alt club fashions, to the alt rock and grunge soundtrack curated by Courtney Love, the aggressive alt-grrl femininity, the fantastic scenes depicted, the haircuts, and then there are the performances by Lori Petty, Tony Collette, Ice T, Malcom McDowell, Iggy Pop and more. It set off the creative bulbs in my head and I spent all evening creating a huge drawing on 3x A1 sheets of paper of a Tank covered in different incarnations of sexy Tank Girl inspired women. I was an art student at the time so I was very familiar with the alt culture depicted. At it's core the imagery of a funky dressed, sexy woman, with an aggressive DGAF attitude, paired with heavy, custom modified and decorated military hardware is what sticks with you and has been one of the core influences in my creative pursuits from then on. There have been many others of course, but this was A significant moment. The image in the art for this Quackcast is the drawing I made back then. I took it to class the next day and my lecturer just said that to her it just showed an “arrogance in drawing ability”, which I was a little shocked by, but this was the mid 1990s and drawing ability was NOT a priority among artists at the time. I am very serious- most 1990s fine artists lacked even rudimentary skill. It was a weird time. Can you tell us about any significant creative influence exposure events? Throw in Malcolm McDowell as the Big Boss Villian and some Naomi Watts and we might have some good old-fashioned 90's Nostalgia Comic Book Movie Goodness. Or all of the above may be the reason we have not watched this movie since the 90's. Oh Yeah, we totally forgot Naomi Watts was in this movie too. Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

We have reached a new movie series! Free Willy trilogy begins with a flippin' good time! See what we did there? Whales have flippers so we said, forget it. You may not like the flipper joke, but we know you'll enjoy the podcast! Free Willy is a 1993 American family drama film, directed by Simon Wincer, produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Jennie Lew Tugend, written by Keith A. Walker and Corey Blechman from a story by Walker and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures under their Family Entertainment imprint. The film stars Jason James Richter in his film debut, Lori Petty, Jayne Atkinson, August Schellenberg, and Michael Madsen with the eponymous character, Willy, played by Keiko. The story is about a 12 year old orphaned boy named Jesse who befriends a captive orca, Willy, at an ailing amusement park. When he discovers that the park owner has been planning to dispose of Willy, he hatches a scheme to break Willy out of captivity. Released on July 16, 1993, the film received positive attention from critics and was a commercial success, grossing $153.7 million from a $20 million budget. It grew into a small franchise, including an animated television series, two sequels, and a direct-to-video reboot in addition to inspiring the rehabilitation and release of Keiko. The film marked Keith A. Walker's only film as screenwriter, and last project before his death in late December 1996.

Welcome to another episode of the Video Store Podcast, where we dive into the depths of cinema history to bring you recommendations from all corners of the movie universe. Today, we're shining the spotlight on an actress whose unique energy and talent have graced some of the most memorable films from the late '80s and '90s: Lori Petty. Let's embark on a journey through four films that not only showcase Petty's versatile acting prowess but also offer a nostalgic trip back to a time when movies were an escape into worlds both wildly imaginative and inspiringly real.Bates Motel (1987): Kicking off our journey is a trip to the infamous Bates Motel, but not as you know it. This 1987 television movie attempts to resurrect the eerie charm of Alfred Hitchcock's classic, with a twist. Lori Petty stars in a pivotal role that showcases her early acting potential. While the film itself diverges from the original Psycho's dark allure, Petty's performance is a beacon of intrigue, providing a glimpse into the dynamic talent that would come to define her career.A League of Their Own (1992): Stepping up to the plate, we find Lori Petty in one of her most beloved roles. "A League of Their Own" offers not just a glimpse into the world of women's professional baseball during World War II but also showcases Petty's incredible range as Kit Keller, the fiery younger sister to Geena Davis's Dottie Hinson. Petty brings a heartfelt and stubbornly spirited performance to the film, highlighting the struggles and triumphs of women athletes with both humor and depth. It's a home run that captures the essence of determination and sisterhood. In the Army Now (1994): From the baseball diamond to the desert sands, Lori Petty continues to surprise and entertain as Christine Jones in "In the Army Now." This comedy, starring alongside Pauly Shore, might not be the pinnacle of cinematic achievement, but Petty's performance steals the show. Her character's journey from a lackadaisical civilian to a committed army reservist provides laughs and a few earnest moments, showcasing Petty's ability to shine even amidst the most chaotic comedic scenarios.Tank Girl (1995): Finally, we reach the cult classic that is "Tank Girl." Based on the British post-apocalyptic comic series, this film is a wild, anarchic ride through a dystopian future, with Petty in the titular role. Tank Girl is an icon of feminist punk, and Petty embodies the character's rebellious spirit with unmatched zest. The film blends action, comedy, and a unique visual style that, while not a box office success, has garnered a fervent cult following over the years. Petty's performance is electrifying, bringing to life a character that refuses to be tamed or categorized.Lori Petty's journey through these films is a testament to her talent and versatility as an actor. From the eerie halls of Bates Motel to the baseball fields of World War II, from the comedic barracks of "In the Army Now" to the anarchic future of "Tank Girl," Petty brings to each role a distinct energy that is all her own. As we revisit these films, we're not just watching movies; we're experiencing the evolution of a remarkable performer whose roles have left an indelible mark on the hearts of moviegoers.Subscribe to the Video Store Podcast* The Video Store Podcast* Apple Podcast* RSS This is a public episode. Point Break is a 1991 American crime action film directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by W. Peter Iliff. It stars Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Lori Petty and Gary Busey. The film's title refers to the surfing term "point break", where a wave breaks as it hits a point of land jutting out from the coastline. The film features Reeves as an undercover FBI agent who is tasked with investigating the identities of a group of bank robbers while he develops a complex relationship with the group's leader (Swayze).

It's a story all about the very first women's professional baseball league in America and how lots of people were into it! But only if the women also knew how to powder their nose on third base...!? Come along as we meet a huge cast of awesome characters: Dottie, a married woman who's the best at baseball but is kinda meh about it; her younger sister Kit, "she's as single as they come" and always feels like she's in Dottie's shadow; Marla Hooch - what a hitter!; Mae, who isn't afraid to go all the way; Doris, who may or may not be the unsung hero of this movie; and Jimmy Dugan, who gives the real talk about avoiding the clap. Together, these women hit, pitch, slide, throw, and catch their way into our hearts, especially when they sing that god damn song... Released in 1992, it was directed by Penny Marshall and stars a cast of notable actors including Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Rosie O'Donnell, Madonna, and Tom Hanks!

Georgia and John take the field to talk about one of their all-time favorite baseball films, Penny Marshall's A League of Their Own. We discuss the documentary on the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) that inspired the film; the fiery sibling rivalry between Geena Davis's Dottie and Lori Petty's Kit; Megan Cavanaugh's screen debut as the unforgettable underdog Marla Hooch; the war's lasting effect on gender roles; Tom Hanks's unique role reversal as the disgusting yet charming Jimmy Dugan; the actors' dedication to authenticity (and the injuries that caused); the strong female friendships, including Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna as Doris and Mae, whose friendship persisted both on and off screen; and we exhaustively debate whether Dottie dropped the ball on purpose or if Kit finally bested her sister and won the game on her own merit. The bases are loaded and it's the bottom of the ninth - step up to the plate and give us a listen!
